Canobie Lake Park Discussion Thread

Today Canobie Lake Park let UNTAMED loose and Theme Park Review was there to cover it for you!

This wild coaster is one of only four Euro Fighters in the US and the only in the Northeast.

The coasters' 97 degree first drop makes it one of the steepest in the country.

The coasters' cars are a custom design with a roaring grizzly on the front.

POV Video!

Canobie Lake Park opened early on this VERY wet Saturday for the ribbon cutting of their newest coaster, UNTAMED, the fourth in their collection.

Located in the redone Big Bear Plaza with a rustic "Adirondack" style and numerous carved bears and other woodland creatures. The buildings and landscaping look beautiful, but I was there for one thing...

A sign picture for Larry.

I jest (sort of). The park did a great job with the area, this is the one of the nicest stations I've ever seen for a coaster.

Here you can see how badly it was raining.

As stated above, the trains have a ferocious looking grizzly on the front. For media day, one of the grizzlies was outfitted with a camera, but unfortunately the rain was so severe, it couldn't be used.

After a brief ribbon cutting ceremony, the park opened the coaster ... in the POURING RAIN.

Unfortunately I didn't get a great picture of the helix.

It's a great ride and a great addition to the park. Everyone that came off it seemed extremely happy (and very wet)! Congrats to Canobie for running a great event and for the assured success of UNTAMED!

The station has a "Great Wolf Lodge" vibe about it--very nice. It's good to see more Eurofighters coming to the U.S. They're great rides if a park needs to pack a maximum amount of thrills into a small space.

Canobie Lake Park has sent us a press release regarding the grand opening of UNTAMED, the park's new Eurofighter.

On Saturday, June 11, coaster enthusiasts and Park guests gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of UNTAMED, Canobie Lake Park’s newest roller coaster. Winners of the Park’s “Very First Riders Club” charity auctions and giveaways were escorted by limousine from the front gate to the coaster area to ride in the first two UNTAMED cars open to the public.

The charity auctions that Canobie established raised over $3800 for area non-profit organizations. In addition, the Park presented commemorative items marking the honor of being in the UNTAMED “VFR” Club to 2500 guests taking their first ride on the new coaster. The event was the culmination of months of planning and hard work by the Canobie team. Construction for the coaster began at the end of the Park’s 2010 season and continued throughout the winter and early spring.

The only roller coaster of its kind in New England and one of only four in the United States, the ride was custom-designed to Canobie’s specifications with an “UNTAMED” Grizzly bear theme. The coaster’s cars, which hold eight passengers each, feature a roaring Grizzly bear on the front of the car. The station and surrounding area are designed in a rustic “Adirondack” style with the coaster’s track supports made to resemble birch trees.

The ride itself is what the manufacturer, Gerstlauer Amusement Rides of Germany, calls a Euro Fighter. A “vertical lift” coaster, it features an initial climb that takes riders 72 feet into the air. From there, riders plummet into a 97 degree drop that should elicit plenty of screams before they zoom through a series of loops, twists and zero-gravity rolls over 1184 feet of track.

UNTAMED is the largest coaster to come online in New England since 2002 and the first coaster to be added to Canobie Lake Park’s four roller coaster line-up in 20 years. The Park’s other roller coasters include the Corkscrew Coaster, the Dragon Coaster, and the Yankee Cannonball, one of the most popular and historic wooden roller coasters in New England marking its 75th birthday at the Park this year.

Father’s Day Special

In addition to celebrating the new roller coaster, families can also celebrate Father’s Day at Canobie Lake Park where Dad will be entitled to free Park admission and a free lunch served from noon to 3PM. Several vehicles from Lee USA Speedway, one of NASCAR’s premier short track venues, will also be on display for Father’s Day. Details about how to obtain the Father’s Day and other special discounts, as well as Park hours and more information about UNTAMED, are available on Canobie’s website at canobie.com.

Ii's the same layout as the one at Duinrell park outside of Amsterdam. Called Falcon, I believe?

(Sorry if I repeat, but it's been awhile for me to catch up, lol.)

Ran great too - and especially with all the trees so close, surrounding it.

And the paintjob on the track and supports also helped heighten

the effect of the ride experience, too. Very camo-RIFIC, lol!

Have fun on it, everybody who gets to ride this one!

Should be good.

I've never been to Canobie, so yesterday, 6-15-11, was my first trip there. I was up in New Hampshire and Canobie is pretty much off the highway so coming home, so I took a two hour pit stop there.

The first thing I headed to was Untamed. Wow, this ride was amazing. I loved it. The line moved very quickly, except those damn line cutters. I hate field trips. For a ride with 850 rph, the line moved really really fast. The queue was full and I got on in about 20 minutes. There are three trains. Either there are two in the station, one on the track. Or one in the station loading/unloading, one waiting to go up the lift, and one on the track. For such a small coaster, this coaster really has some great capacity.

Yankee Cannonball had the longest line of the day. I wish I could've rode it.

Here's my ride count:

Untamed - 2x

Skater - 1x

Corkscrew - 1x

Short video I took with my phone

Here are my ride reviews.

Untamed - Being my first euro fighter, I didn't know what to expect. All I can say is, this ride is wild. I loved it. Sure, it looks small, but for such a small coaster, it packs a punch. I would say it packs an even bigger punch than Batman at SFNE. The 90 degree lift hill really gets your adrenaline going, then you slowly crest the hill and you don't see the track in front of you. The drop is extremely intense. It just throws you right out of the seat. I was not expecting that at all. I can't even imagine doing that with just lap bars. The loop has some great hangtime also.

The immelmen turn is next. Next to the 97* drop, this turn is the next most intense part of the ride. It was insane. You get some great forces in it.

The turn into the heartline is pretty forceful. You get even better hangtime then you did in the loop in the heartline. The helix was also pretty forceful then you slide right into the break run. Great ride. It's pretty smooth. I've heard reports where euro fighters were rough. Definitely not the case here.

Skater - Great flat. Got some good airtime when it spins over the top

Corkscrew - Rough arrow. I heard my neck crack a few times. Is there anything else to say? Haha.

Now onto the pictures:

Yankee Canonball from my parking spot. I really wish I got on it.

Untamed - first coaster of the season (or does that kiddie coaster at the carnival count? )

Going up!

These bears in the queue are cool. They're made out of the tree's they cut down to fit the ride in.

Bruin's won the Stanely Cup! (not sure if you can see the jersey on the bear)

Only shade in the queue. The line moves fast though so it wasn't a big deal.

Coming out.

The drop. Man, do you REALLY come out of the seat. Intense

Almost a failed pictures.

I love the supports

Decent landscaping, always nice.

Back of the great themed trains.

Took this from the exit

Failed attempt to get the train in the picture. There are a lot of failed picture attempts, that I'm not uploading. Hah.

Awesome flat.

All in all, Canobie is a very nice, CLEAN, family friendly park. There is tons of shade and it's flat rides galore (looking at you Six Flags). I also really enjoyed the RCT look of the park. Free parking was great also. I had a good two hour pit stop at this really nice park. I hope to get back up there soon. Everyone on the Northeast trip will love the park.
