Walibi Belgium Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Why am I happy ? Maybe out of nostalgia. Not only is it a Schwarzkopf, but it's also one of the first coasters I ever rode. Maybe it's a matter of generation, and I can understand how at 37 I am more attached to it than you at 23. I also would LOVE new thrilling coasters at my local park. Would like it sooo much. Just as much as I would love Cedar Point to replace Walibi altogether. But unfortunately, this is NOT gonna happen. I know it's a far fetched example, but we are now used to NOT receiving new rides, they might as well open the ones they still have. I am a regular visitor to the park, and honestly, the longest lines on "Sirocco" were in the 90's when it ran at full capacity. Since they covered it, I have NEVER had to wait more than let's say 20 min max. Low capacity might be better than no capacity at all. Tell yourself the people in Turbine's line are not in Werewolf's... I realise I have just typed 8 lines when I could just have Typed "ANTON SCHWARZKOPF"

Am I the only one not happy with the reopening of Turbine? I mean, it's a fun ride and all, but the capacity is horrible because they let the flywheel rest for 5 minutes or so in between the launches. Also, the last new coaster (not including the failed Vertigo) was built OVER 10 YEARS ago. I'd rather have a new coaster than an old rusty one.

If they can fix the flywheel so that it can launches without a rest period, than I'm more happy, but I'd still prefer a new coaster over Turbine.

How can you be unhappy with it? I can see being indifferent but if you don't think it's worth the wait then don't ride it. Any time they can take a SBNO ride and make it operational again that's a win in my book, I hate seeing SBNO rides at a park. Personally I'd love to have the chance to ride it.

Schwarzkopf coasters are still the best!

And at Knotts the Shuttle Loop runs like a charm so they should contact one of the many companies still doing maintenence and repairs for the Schwarzkopf coaster like Intamin, Gerstelauer, Zierer, Maurer-Söhne. All those either have the Know-How from engineers that formerly worked for Schwarzkopf - last time I checked on the website Gerstelauer even had a completly refurbished Schwarzkopf train for sale. I guess they can even install a completly new launch-system including trains - maybe with LSM/LIM launch. Its more a question of money than ability to do.

And yes: I'd love to see Turbine back in action again. Would even go to belgium next year!

As French forums show, something is underway at Walibi Belgium. I think my favourite Belgian ride might reopen in the end !

Just remember, if you notice the spikes getting shorter and shorter...then you need to be worried.

Best of luck to the ride...we need to preserve our shuttle loops! The building seems like an interesting touch.

What I meant was that I'd rather have them built a new coaster instead of reopening this one. Turbine should have never been SBNO in the first place. I'm getting the feeling that Walibi Belgium really have become the milking cow of CDA. Walibi is such an insanely strong brand in Belgium that people keep coming to the park, while CDA has taken ALOT more rides out of the park than added new ones. Why invest when people keep coming?

YES, you are the only one not happy that they decided to preserve a piece of history (and a damn fine coaster at that!) over building another gimmicky spinning coaster.

I freakin' LOVED Turbine when I rode it many years ago. I'll have to try to get back over there.

I'm glad they're actually doing work now! This ride was probably one of the park's most popular attractions, and certainly their 'Classic Gem' attraction. The mentioned issue about capacity is somewhat minor in my opinion, but perhaps the park can work to fix it.

I do agree with wrebbit that Walibi Belgium could use a new coaster. It's too bad that Vertigo was a big failure, but they should seriously consider adding a new standout thriller, as Turbine is probably the most exciting ride at the park. Anybody think that a custom Eurofighter in the woods would fare well here?

^would be better than nada of course, but there are already Typhoon and Anubis as Gerstlauer looping dept representants. CDA has just acquired a B&M for Asterix. Let me dream of a Swiss machine in Belgium too... (wingrider before they are so widespread they do not look "new" anymore ?) I'd love a Khan clone of course, but this will never happen. Anyway, I think any new coaster will have to be on the other side of the park because of the neighbours. Back to the likely renovation of Turbine: Do you think the fact they have to enclose the spikes will be a shortcoming ? (no height sensation) or a plus ? (feeling of speed accentuated by the "tubing" )

Honestly I dont like the idea of a darkride looper - the magic of the loop is seeing the world revolving around you like in that signature shot from the movie "Rollercoaster". As the loop presses the riders safely into the seats this sensation is lost when you cant see the world around you. But if enclosing means a way to preserve this ride - its better than nothing.

Cant they put the loop into a soundproof glass-building???

Building is definitely there to stay since even if they had removed Turbine, the building would have been kept as a station / braking area for the spinning one. But I agree that I prefered Sirocco to Turbine. Some of my coaster friends do, some don't. I would love a kind of catwalk THROUGH the loop for viewers, with an inside passage for non riders !!! (there is actually a tiny one inside the building, threading the loop for "maintenance" (I really don't know what they can do from the center of the loop but it's there)they could paint the train with a neon colour stripe or combine that with blacklight in the building and viewers would see it flash twice in a kind of "milky way" ala Space Mountain ? daydreaming...

I would have thought I would feel the same way about preferring a loop being outside, but after riding Turbine a few years ago, I think that it being enclosed is even better. I couldn't really tell when we'd hit the loop, so it added a surprise factor as well.

^Jon, did you also get that feeling coming backwards in the dark after the loop, that the launch section felt like an incline whereas it is perfectly horizontal (unlike KK, TTD ...) Lots of people who rode it with me felt like they were going "upwards" on the way back through the station...

This combined with the fact that you strangely get a feeling of being horizontal while still negociating the end of the loop. So the flat section feels like going upwards. Speaking of noise: indeed I can understand the neighbours complaining, in a way LOL. But the sound of the launch when it was not enclosed, as well as the typical "tudududud" of Schwarzie loopers... pure ear delight imho. A sample of the launch system sound (flywheel) can be found on the schwarzkopf fansite. Worth listening

At Hansa-Park they've the final brakes inside a tunnel - and its damn loud. Many poeple who know whats comming hold their ears shut....

Engineering has come quite a way - you'd miss the new B&M or Gerstelauer coasters if it wouldn't be for the screaming girls...

I like the idea of enclosing the ride. It would make for a unique experience, and dark coasters are always fun. In a way it seems best not to meddle with the increasingly rare Schwarzkopf shuttle loops, but it's still the same ride indoors or out. I love both Poltergeist and Flight of Fear; the outdoor one provides more intense headchoppers, but the indoor one is more disorienting overall. I do enjoy observing the changing views during inversions, though.

(I do too, Laura

On a sadder note now... It seems this park's purpose is to get on my nerves with teasing me about my Anton gem. There was a Fanday at walibi Belgium last week, and it was heard that while they are REALLY working on Turbine now, it seems they are not even sure it will be ready for 2012 because Compagnie des Alpes was late in accepting to allow a budget to it, and it seems they now need a new train to run on it... so it might be 2 0 1 3 !!!!! (what did they do with the train they purchased from Bobbejaanland when they closed Looping Star ?) After the several year long "Vertigo" comedy, it's the once crown coaster of the park to put shame on the park's management. I have tried to avoid falling in the easiness of criticizing this park like lots of people do, but I won't be able to deny evidence any longer... Walibi Belgium is becoming a JOKE of its own.

I also believe this "train delivery delay story" is just another excuse for NOT bringing anything new for seasons. In my previous post, I forgot to mention that at this fan day, they ALSO said that there would be no new major ride at the park till 2015 !!! because as they said it themselves: the park does NOT need that, and attendance is high enough ! SHAME. At best, it was said that a new film for the 4D theater could happen, but not much more... really: Walibi Joke, the park.

After months (years) of rumours and speculation, FINALLY I am happy to report that the park has made it OFFICIAL on their own website that the Legend Is Back in 2013: Turbine will reopen next year under a new name, this time totally enclosed as had been rumoured some months ago. here the link to their official website with the sign placed in front of the coaster former entry. This is finally good news for my home park. Anton Schwarzkopf is alive !
