FlyerACE1
On New Year's Day, Ellen and I decided to take a ride to the Jersey Shore and stay over at my family's condo in Wildwood. On the way down we stopped at Seaside Heights for a ride on the Casino Pier Carousel and lunch at the Saw Mill. On January 2nd, we took a walk on the Wildwood boardwalk to check out the piers and the remnants of a fire that claimed a hotel, Sam's Pizza Palace and Rita's Italian Ice. Here are some photos from Wildwood. There is only one establishment now open year round (Sam's used to be one) and that's Original Fudge Kitchen and Ellen is ecstatic! In the winter, the usually bustling boardwalk is dead quiet. It's rare to see more than maybe 5 people walking or jogging the boards. A cool shot straight into a room that's mostly intact. About half of the hotel remains but I don't believe it's salvageable. It'll probably be turned into condos like the rest of Wildwood. This is located directly across from the entrance to Morey's Pier on the west side of the boardwalk. Total destruction! This is where Sam's Pizza Palace and Rita's Italian Ice once stood. Sadly, boardwalk fires are fairly common. This photo was taken in approximately the same spot in September 2005. Sam's Pizza Palace was a fixture on the boardwalk since the '50's. A shot of the repainting of the Great Nor'Easter. Another shot taken from the north end of the pier. You can easily see some primer and a sort of tan final color. The bright pink color is almost all gone! Here is Morey's 26th Street Pier. In the distance you can see the transformation of The Great Nor'Easter. SharkTums
Wow, I hadn't heard about the fire there. That's sad! What is the final color going to be for the SLC? Is it that tan or is that just a primer? It looks kind of sad all beige and stuff! It's kind of peaceful walking around closed, or empty parks, looks like you guys had fun! Rider117
I believe the Great Nor'Easter is supposed to be tan. I would rather have them repaint it pink.
CoasterJunkie
Sam's Pizza was a great loss to Wildwood. Being from NJ originally, I used to get Sam' all the time when I worked on the Boardwalk. Hopefully the owners will be able to rebuild. I had Sam's just recently too in Sept after my last trip to the shore
Meteornotes
Wow, I had no idea that pizza place had burned down. I remember eating there a couple of times during visits to the area. dt
alpengeist04
It always looks weird when steel coasters are all one color. I don't understand why they don't have the track a different color from the supports.
YoshiFan
Nice photos. I like the old paint color of the Great Noreaster better but I guess tan is ok as well. Ocean City is the same way with the boardwalk dead. Other than 1 arcade, I don't think anything on the boardwalk there is open year around. I can't wait until Morey's opens up again, I was there last August and Great White was awesome and although I wasn't expecting to based on what I heard about SLC's, I liked the Great Noreaster as well. If you look closely at some of the pics, you'll see shades of grey and most of the coaster is more of a beige color. I assume the grey is the primer and the finished color is the beige. Would be cool though it was the other way around. The grey, like storm clouds, would more fit the theme. I guess the lighter colors are easier to maintain. Anything red, pink or orange tends to fade and they're forced to paint every few years or it looks horrible. The problem with the light colors is that the track part will look dirty quickly and the grease from the lift chain will really make it look disgusting. I'm not sold on the new color. Mind Eraser
I think the beige color looks classy -- reminds me of the original Hangman at Opryland. The flaming coral pink was cool, but 11 years is enough, IMO.
ECZenith
I'm glad to see it get paint, and I kind of like the new color. Wildwood is easily one of my favorite places, thanks for the photos!
robbalvey
I think the beige color looks classy -- reminds me of the original Hangman at Opryland. That's what I thought to! All they need is a little bit of green in there and it would be just like Heide Park! --Robb
Hattuchili
^ LOL, you are right, Robb! White and green and it really looks like Heide Park! --Sören
OldJJman
^^ IIRC weren't ALL the rides around the SLC (missed the credit ) that same white and green color? JJ
rollermonkey
Ugh, I hate that white/green color scheme at Heide Park! At least if they reversed it on one of the two coasters with it...
QuakerOaties
Nice photos! The jersey shore always has an eery abandoned feel to it in the offseason. Mark "Wildwood seems to have a lot of fires" Luskus
socalMAN123
That pic of the empty boardwalk reminds me of KBF on a weekday. Great pics, that color for the Great Nor'easter looks like it would camoflauge with its surroundings. ---Brent
Bubba Z
It's now pure white. It's said the park will light it up at night different colors. almost complete .
DerekRx
Wow, all white is pretty, yet simple and boring. Oh well, at least this way you won't be able to see all the seagull crap. If Morey's does half as good a job lighting this at night as they do with the new light package on the Wheel, it'll look really good at night! ECZenith
I kinda like the beige but figured it was just primer. It ought to look real nice with th elight effects though. Way to go on improving your rides this season Morey's! Now PLEASE go get the Golden Nugget running again!
MattJackson
Ha, I've been there only 4 or 5 times in my whole life, but now I have to go back just to see if the new paint job made a difference to the feeling. I doubt it, though.
ECZenith
They've also redone their dark rides and added a free fall tower. I would say it's worth going back just for that. Also, if you haven't done it yet. There's this "Zombie World" shooting dark ride on the boardwalk (outside the parks) that's not to be missed. YoshiFan
New color or not, I can already feel the pain! And there is still 7 months till I visit... Their SLC supposedly isn't that bad compared to other SLC's (the only SLC I have been on is Great Nor'Easter and I didn't find it that rough). Their boomerang is another story though, I found it very rough
