some of my favorites at the moment:

-Roger Waters, "Amused to Death"

Doctor Doctor what is wrong with me

This supermarket life is getting long

What is the heart life of a colour TV

What is the shelf life of a teenage queen

Ooh western woman

Ooh western girl

News hound sniffs the air

When Jessica Hahn goes down

He latches on to that symbol

Of detachment

Attracted by the peeling away of feeling

The celebrity of the abused shell the belle

Ooh western woman

Ooh western girl

And the children on Melrose

Strut their stuff

Is absolute zero cold enough

And out in the Valley warm and clean

The little ones sit by their TV screens

No thoughts to think

No tears to cry

All sucked dry

Down to the very last breath

Bartender what is wrong with me

Why I am so out of breath

The captain said excuse me ma'am

This species has amused itself to death

Amused itself to death

Amused itself to death

We watched the tragedy unfold

We did as we were told

We bought and sold

It was the greatest show on earth

But then it was over

We oohed and aahed

We drove our racing cars

We ate our last few jars of caviar

And somewhere out there in the stars

A keen-eyed look-out

Spied a flickering light

Our last hurrah

And when they found our shadows

Grouped 'round the TV sets

They ran down every lead

They repeated every test

They checked out all the data in their lists

And then the alien anthropologists

Admitted they were still perplexed

But on eliminating every other reason

For our sad demise

They logged the only explanation left

This species has amused itself to death

No tears to cry

No feelings left

This species has amused itself to death

Amused itself to death

-Kate Bush, "Love and Anger"

It lay buried here. It lay deep inside me.

It's so deep I don't think that I can speak about it.

It could take me all of my life,

But it would only take a moment to

Tell you what I'm feeling,

But I don't know if I'm ready yet.

You come walking into this room

Like you're walking into my arms.

What would I do without you?

Take away the love and the anger,

And a little piece of hope holding us together.

Looking for a moment that'll never happen,

Living in the gap between past and future.

Take away the stone and the timber,

And a little piece of rope won't hold it together.

If you can't tell your sister,

If you can't tell a priest,

'Cause it's so deep you don't think that you can speak about it

To anyone,

Can you tell it to your heart?

Can you find it in your heart

To let go of these feelings

Like a bell to a Southerly wind?

We could be like two strings beating,

Speaking in sympathy...

What would we do without you?

Two strings speak in sympathy.

Take away the love and the anger,

And a little piece of hope holding us together.

Looking for a moment that'll never happen,

Living in the gap between past and future.

Take away the stone and the timber,

And a little piece of rope won't hold it together.

We're building a house of the future together.

(What would we do without you?)

Well, if it's so deep you don't think that you can speak about it,

Just remember to reach out and touch the past and the future.

Well, if it's so deep you don't think you can speak about it,

Don't ever think that you can't change the past and the future.

You might not, not think so now,

But just you wait and see--someone will come to help you

...and some random lyrics from a song that i've been working on.

it's not all right, you can't control me

there's nothing left to hide

into the night, i've had enough here

turn off the lights and say goodbye

i've got no explanation or a reason to believe

take me as i am, someone help me please

before i go insane

the demons call my name

walk into the light

or be ready to fight

endless condemnation

who threw away the key

i've lost my soul forever

damned eternally

take me away, throw me inside

enslave my thoughts, then harvest my mind

move along now, there's nothing more to see

what's left of me

all my joy is bittersweet

all my pain without sorrow

all my love forever hollow

direct me through the garden to the sea

are the demons waiting for me

just forget what i said, i'm drifting away

don't leave me today

i'm dying

Feist's "Mushaboom"

Helping the kids out of their coats

But wait the babies haven't been born oh oh oh

Unpacking the bags and setting up

And planting lilacs and buttercups oh oh oh

But in the meantime I've got it hard

Second floor living without a yard

It may be years until the day

My dreams will match up with my pay

Old dirt road (mushaboom)

Knee deep snow (mushaboom)

Watching the fire as we grow (mushaboom)

Old

I got a man to stick it out

And make a home from a rented house oh oh oh

And we'll collect the moments one by one

I guess that's how the future's done oh oh oh

How many acres how much light

Tucked in the woods and out of sight

Talk to the neighbours and tip my cap

On a little road barely on the map

Old dirt road (mushaboom)

Knee deep snow (mushaboom)

Watching the fire as we grow (mushaboom)

Old

Old dirt road

Rambling rose (mushaboom)

Watching the fire as we grow (mushaboom)

Well I'm sold ...

Oh oh oh oh oh oh ...

Oh oh oh oh oh oh ...

Aerials by System Of A Down

Life is a waterfall,

We're one in the river,

And one again after the fall.

Swimming through the void

We hear the word,

We lost ourselves,

But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play,

Always want to go,

But you never want to stay,

And we are the ones that want to choose,

Always want to play,

But you never want to lose.

Aerials, in the sky,

When you lose small mind,

You free your life.

Life is a waterfall,

We drink from the river,

Then we turn around and put up our walls.

Swimming through the void

We hear the word,

We lost ourselves,

But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play,

Always want to go,

But you never want to stay,

And we are the ones that want to choose,

Always want to play,

But you never want to lose.

Aerials, in the sky,

When you lose small mind,

You free your life.

Aerials, so up high,

When you free your eyes,

Eternal prize.

Aerials, in the sky,

When you lose small mind,

You free your life.

Aerials, so up high,

When you free your eyes,

Eternal prize.

"Satan Said Dance" by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

If I had to describe this song in one sentence, it would be "A techno song on the verge of overdosing on crack". It has some REALLY screwed up lyrics too:

How'd I arrive in a place like this?

Red right hand does the alligator kiss

My hair turns white and my face is green

But my feet are still moving if you know what I mean

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Said dance!

Let's go.

He says to me to shake around

And don't stop till you hit the the ground

And I know it is not how you thought it would be

No whips, no chains, just dancing, dancing, dancing

Dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing

Dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Said dance!

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Said dance!

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Satan, Satan, Satan

Said dance!

All right

I love these lines from 3Oh!3's Colorado Sunrise (Not the whole song, just this part). Plus, it has a really catchy beat, along with all their other stuff.

"I've got five fingers on each hand for every mistake that I've made,

'Cause my tongue is tied to tonsels and i need to sh*t and shave.

I'm a shade to pale for handsome and have habits I can't shake,

And if you try to take that from me well I'll never be the same...

...Trainwreck that I am,

And I am what I am what I am what I am,

A trainwreck, that I am

And I am what I am what I am what I am,

A trainwreck.

And as long as it's okay with you I think I'll stay right here.

I got no where to go 'cause where to go is up to you, dear.

Happy as a clam I see the glimmer in your eyes.

Hold you through the night and watch that Colorado sunrise.

No car and never cared cared because I got no place to go.

But in a room missing a wall,

I couldn't pay a plant to grow

You can try and make this pretty, pick up all my dirty clothes.

And if you never really get me then I guess you'll never know the...

...Trainwreck that I am.

And I am what I am what I am what I am,

A trainwreck that I am.

And I am what I am what I am what I am,

A trainwreck."

As a full song, I find a lot of meaning in Pink Floyd's, High Hopes

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young

In a world of magnets and miracles

Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary

The ringing of the division bell had begin

Along the long road and on down the causeway

Do they still meet there by the cut

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps

Running before time took our dreams away

Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground

To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener

The light was brighter

With friends surrounded

The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us

To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side

Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again

Dragged by the force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfurled

We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Encumbered forever by desire and ambition

There's a hunger still unsatisfied

Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon

Though down this road we've been so many time

The grass was greener

The light was brighter

The taste was sweeter

The nights of wonder

With friends surrounded

The dawn mist glowing

The water flowing

The endless river

Forever and ever

As a few simple lines that pretty much sum it all up, it's pretty tough to beat the late Jim Morrison of The Doors with these lines from the song, Roadhouse Blues.

Well, I woke up this morning

And I got myself a beer.

The futures uncertain

And the end is always near.

"Citizen Soldier" by 3 doors down. I think I learned these lyrics the fastest out of any other song. Took me only about two or three days.

Beyond the boundaries of your city's lights,

Stand the heroes waiting for your cries.

So many times you did not bring this on yourself,

When that moment finally comes,

I'll be there to help.

On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,

I'll be right here.

Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.

Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,

We'll always be ready because we will always be there.

When there are people crying in the streets,

When they're starving for a meal to eat,

When they simply need a place to make their beds,

Right here underneath my wing,

You can rest your head.

On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,

I'll be right here!

Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.

Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,

We'll always be ready because we will always be there...

There... there... there...

Hope and pray that you'll never need me,

But rest assured I will not let you down.

I'll walk beside you but you may not see me,

The strongest among you may not wear a crown.

On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,

I'll be right here!

On that day when you don't have the strength for the burden you bear,

I'll be right here!

Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.

(Citizen soldiers)

Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,

We'll always be ready because we will always be there.

Since I have yet to read a posted song's lyrics all the way through, I won't expect others to do the same.

Don McLean's "American Pie".

Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", especially the refrain, and "Time".

Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'".

The Lonely Island's "I'm On A Boat" (I'm not kidding).

I'm also a fan of songs that address social issues, because that typically means the lyricist has a vested interest in the meaning and, thus, spends more time and thought composing it. As awesome as fancy rhymes are, I prefer meaning.

I bet a lot of people are singing this song these days!

"Ain't nothing goin' on but the rent" by Gwen Guthrie

Bill collectors at my door

What can you do for me

Hey

No romance without finance

No romance without finance

Boy, nothin’ in life is free

That’s why I’m askin’ you what can you do for me

I’ve got responsibilities

So I’m lookin’ for a man whose got money in his hands

‘Cause nothin’ from nothin’ leaves a nothin’

You got to have somethin’ if you wanna be with me

Oh, life is too serious, love’s too mysterious

A fly girl like me needs security

‘Cause ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent

You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me

Ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent

You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me

No romance without finance

I said no romance without finance

Boy, your silky ways are sweet

But we’re only wastin’ time if your pockets are empty

I’ve got lots of love to give

But I will have to avoid you if you’re unemployed

‘Cause nothin’ from nothin’ leaves a nothin’

You got to have somethin’ if you wanna be with me

‘Cause life is too serious, love’s too mysterious

A fly girl like me needs security

‘Cause ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent

You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me

Ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent

You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me

No romance without finance

I said no romance without finance

No romance without finance

I said no romance without finance

Oh, you look good to me

Your silky words are sweet

But your pockets sure look empty

Ooh, nothin’ from nothin’ leaves a nothin’

You got to have somethin’ if you wanna be with me

Whoa, life is too serious, love’s too mysterious

A fly girl like me needs security

I said life is too serious, love’s too mysterious

Fly girl like me needs security

‘Cause ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent

You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me

Ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent

You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me

No romance without finance

No romance without finance

No romance without finance

I said no romance without finance

What can you do for me

Oh, you look good to me

Your silky words are sweet

But your pockets sure look empty

Ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent

I’m lookin’ for a man to put some money in my hands

Here's the tune since most of you probably haven't heard this 80's gem.

(I gotta find this song again)

Explain It To Me by Liz Phair's lyrics get to me. I'm not sure what to make of them but I can tell they are deep.

Head underwater

Keeps getting harder

Give 'em your medicine

Fame injection

Tell him to jump higher

Tell him to run farther

Make him measure up

Decades longer than you

Piece it together

It's like weather

Watch him travel

Kiss the gravel

Tell him to jump higher

Tell him to run farther

Make him measure up

Ten times longer than you ever should

You never could explain them to me

Explain them to me

This may sound kind of generic, but I find Linkin Park's lyrics in Hybrid Theory and Meteora to be incredible. They're deep, show good emotion, and you would never know unless you really listened and thought about it.

One of the best examples is "Hit The Floor" from Meteora.

Ahh, my favorite song of all time. you older farts should know this one:

'Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

Justa urchin' to be livin' under the street!

I'm a hard case that's touch to beat!

I'm your charity case so buy me something to eat!

I'll pay you at another time!

Take it to the end of the line! (beat it!)

Rags to riches or so they say!

Ya gotta, keep pushin' for the fortune and fame!

Ya know it's all a gamble when it's just a game!

Ya treat it like a capitol crime!

Everyboy's doin' the time!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

Strapped to the chair of the cities gas chamber!

Why I'm here I can't wuite remember!

Surgeon general say's it's hazardous to breathe!

I'd have another cigarret but I can't see!

Tell me who you're gunna believe!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

So far, away!

So far, away!

So far, away!

so far, away!

Captain America has been torn appart!

Now he's a court jester with a broken heart!

He said turn me around and take me back to the start!

I must be losing my mind, are you blind?!

I've seen it all a million times!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me home!

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!

Oh won'tcha, take me hoooooooooooome!

(awesomely incredible solo which varies per show starts)

I wanna go!

I wanna know!

Won'tcha, take me home!

I wanna see!

How could you be!

Won'tcha, take me hoooooooooome! Yeah!

Baby!

Please!

Las Vegas!

Good!

F***ing!

Night!

Yeah!

(Live Era version- the better version IMO)

There are so many. Right now I'm really into the Foo Fighters "Let It Die." Just listening to it sounds like Dave Grohl is finally venting on Kurt committing suicide so early. It also seems like there are shots at Courtney too. This isn't the whole song, but you get the gist.

Heart of gold but it lost its pride

Beautiful veins and bloodshot eyes

I've seen your face in another light

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

In too deep and out of time.

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

A simple man and his blushing bride

Intravenous, intertwined

Hearts gone cold your hands were tied

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

In too deep and out of time.

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Do you ever think of me?

You're so considerate.

Do you ever think of me?

Oh, so considerate.

In too deep and lost in time

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Beautiful veins and bloodshot eyes

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Marching Band of Manhattan - Death Cab For Cutie

If I could open my arms

And span the length of the isle of Manhattan,

I'd bring it to where you are

Making a lake of the East River and Hudson

If I could open my mouth

Wide enough for a marching band to march out

They would make your name sing

And bend through alleys and bounce off all the buildings.

I wish we could open our eyes

To see in all directions at the same time

Oh what a beautiful view

If you were never aware of what was around you

And it is true what you said

That I live like a hermit in my own head

But when the sun shines again

I'll pull the curtains and blinds to let the light in.

Sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole

Just like a faucet that leaks and there is comfort in the sound

But while you debate half empty or half full

It slowly rises, your love is gonna drown [4x]

Your love is gonna drown [4x]

Your love is gonna...

I love this song.

It Ends Tonight by the All American Rejects

Sometimes I've felt the exact same way about someone or something that's just worn out their welcome.

Your subtleties

They strangle me

I can’t explain myself at all.

And all the wants

And all the needs

All I don’t want to need at all.

The walls start breathing

My minds unweaving

Maybe it’s best you leave me alone.

A weight is lifted

On this evening

I give the final blow.

When darkness turns to light,

It ends tonight,

It ends tonight.

A falling star

Least I fall alone.

I can’t explain what you can’t explain.

You're finding things that you didn’t know

I look at you with such disdain

The walls start breathing

My minds unweaving

Maybe it’s best you leave me alone.

A weight is lifted

On this evening

I give the final blow.

[Chorus]

When darkness turns to light

It ends tonight,

It ends tonight.

Just a little insight won't make this right

It’s too late to fight

It ends tonight,

It ends tonight.

Now I’m on my own side

It’s better than being on your side

It’s my fault when you're blind

It's better that I see it through your eyes

All these thoughts locked inside

Now you’re the first to know

When darkness turns to light

It ends tonight,

It ends tonight.

Just a little insight won't make this right

It’s too late to fight

It ends tonight,

It ends when darkness turns to light

It ends tonight,

It ends tonight.

Just a little insight won't make this right

It’s too late to fight

It ends tonight,

It ends tonight.

Tonight,

When darkness turns to light,

It ends tonight.

"Nobody does it better" by Carly Simon

That´s exactly what I feel when I think about my wife!

Nobody does it better

Makes me feel sad for the rest

Nobody does it half as good as you

Baby, you're the best

I wasn't lookin' but somehow you found me

It tried to hide from your love light

But like heaven above me

The spy who loved me

Is keepin' all my secrets safe tonight

And nobody does it better

Though sometimes I wish someone could

Nobody does it quite the way you do

Why'd you have to be so good?

The way that you hold me

Whenever you hold me

There's some kind of magic inside you

That keeps me from runnin'

But just keep it comin'

How'd you learn to do the things you do?

Oh, and nobody does it better

Makes me feel sad for the rest

Nobody does it half as good as you

Baby, baby, darlin', you're the best

Baby you're the best

Darlin', you're the best

Baby you're the best

Craig Finn is one of my favorite lyricists, one my favorite HS songs...

he said what about los angeles. she said we never really made it that far west. we scored big in denver and we thought it might be best. to go hang around in the upper midwest.

he said what about new orleans. she said i don't think you understand what that means. all those hangers on. the girls lifting up their shirts when the cameras come on. we were tryna stay away from those kind of scenes.

we didn't go to dallas. 'cause jackie onassis said that it ain't safe for catholics yet. think about what they pulled on kennedy. and then think about his security. then think about what they might try to pull on you and me.

saint barbara i'm calling your name. don't let me blow up. we'll hook it all up. i guess there's fields of speed where there's fields of grain.

saint barbara don't let me explode. i can feel the whole scene starting to corrode when we're fooling around on the frontage roads.

he asked what happened to charlemagne. she just smiled all polite-like and said something vague. she said charlemagne got caught up in some complicated things. she wiped at her nose and she winked.

The First Big Weekend by Arab Strap are my favourite lyrics, it's a brilliant song, it literally commentates on a weekend they have had, it could be a novel:

So that was the first big weekend of the summer...

Starts thursday as usual with the canteen quiz and again no-one wins the big cash prize.

Later I do my sound bloke routine by approaching ginas new boyfriend to say that he shouldnt feel that theres any animosity between us and then I even go and make peace with her shouldnt hav

Hered.

Then on friday night we went through to the arches...

There was only one car going so some of us had to get the train. we got through quite late. then we went to a pub to take the gear.

There was no problems getting in - we saw some others waiting down the front of the queue so we skipped in.

It was a good night - everyone was nutted and I ended up dancing with some blonde girl.

I thought she had been quite pretty until last night when matthew informed me that she had, in fact, been a pig.

When the club finished we wandered the streets for a while until we got to this 24-hour cafe.

I didnt like the look of it so we left and got a taxi back to morags flat.

I couldnt sleep so I sat about drinking someone elses strawberry tonic wine and tried to keep everyone else up.

Then at ten oclock in the morning we went downstairs to buy some drink. we had intended to watch the football in the afternoon but wed passed out by then and slept right through it, awaking to find out

That england had won two-nil.

Then we went to get the train home and had a few in the station bar.

We had some stuff left from the previous nights supplies so when we got home we decided to go down to johns indie disco.

Same story as friday - lots of hugging, lots of dancing etc. etc.

I couldnt sleep again so went to the park to look at the toon, taking a detour through the playpark.

To get in we had to climb over a ten foot steel fence, which resulted in severe bruising of our hands, legs and groins, but we had a good laugh on the stuff, especially the tube-slide, which pro

Doubles up as a urinal for drunk teens.

Then we walked through the woods to have a look at the toon. big disappointment, but the mist on the lake was cool.

Sunday afternoon we go up to johns with a lot of beer in time to watch the simpsons - it was a really good episode about love always ending in tragedy except, of course, for marge and homer. it

Quite moving at the end and to tell you the truth my eyes were a bit damp.

Then we watched these young girls in swimsuits have a water fight in the street.

We went up to the pub about ten.

It was busy for a sunday night, lots of people we know, including my first ever girlfriend who I still find very attractive, quite frankly, but I didnt really speak to her

Shes probably still a bitch, anyway.

Her friend gillian was there, I had a chat with her, she was still quite pleasant.

At the same time I watched malcolm make some terrible attempt to try and chat up a girl we know called jo. he made some remark about her skirt that was barely there the previous night or something

I couldnt sleep again that night, thanks to some seriously disturbing nightmares...matthew says I should cut down on the cheese.

Went out for the weekend, it lasted for ever, high with our friends its officially summer.

I got some sleep eventually on monday afternoon.

It was a beautiful day, and later that evening malcolm introduced me to the power of merrydown - 1.79 a litre, 8.2% - mmmm.....

Judith and laura came round later and we sat in my back garden and drank.

Then matthew came round and we went up the town.

Its officially summer.

Cheers,
