Six Flags Over Texas (SFOT) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Is Robb the new profile pic for SFOT's Facebook page? If it's not him, it sure looks like it.

I'm pretty sure it's not...when I was out there during the commercial shoot, I was talking to Aaron in their PR department, (he's also one of the Facebook page admins) and he told me who it was that they took that picture of...it was a park employee, I'm pretty certain. I don't remember the department though...

EDIT: there's an extra quotation mark in the link for the new commercial mentioned above...here's the corrected link http://affiliate.kickapps.com/_TEXAS-GIANT-COMMERCIAL/video/1565125/151061.html

New Commercial

"The worlds smoothest wooden coaster"

I suppose there's a grain of truth to that. It's quite smooth and is mostly wood, except the tracks. How about "smoothest steel/wood hybrid" or "among the world's smoothest rides!"

Here's the thing: SFOT needed some kind of superlative to market their ride, since most of the GP assumed that they were just retracking it. Even those who noticed the new track was different often needed some convincing that this was a new ride and not just the old one fixed. One way to garner that kind of attention is to attach the attention-grabbing adjectives to it, like "steepest" and "smoothest". How to do that, though, when it's not the anything-est in the world? Well, you modify the claim with limits, and since the GP (and the lemming reporters who regurgitated all the info SFOT gave them on media day) doesn't know any better, you say "steepest wood coaster", "most banking on a wood coaster", and "smoothest wood coaster."

It's not much different than when a park advertises "fastest coaster in the southeast" or "tallest coaster in a state with a two-word name" or "steepest drop of any coaster with green track." The one difference here is that they left out the word "structured" -- as in "steepest wood STRUCTURED coaster".

Aside from forums such as this, most folks won't even question it.

That makes perfect sense to me. I don't think us enthusiasts should be so uptight about things like that. We know it's wrong, but it doesn't actually matter. What matters is that SFOT has made a worth-while investment for an awesome refurbished coaster. I love that Six Flags hasn't completely forgotten about their old coasters. This, Bizarro, X2, the Topper Track on Rattler and the woodies at SFNE, and S:EFK are all great ways to improve the existing parks coasters and re-market older coasters as new. It's all marketing, and I'm all for Six Flags being successful.

@Jakizle...No, Shockwave was not open at all on Sunday and neither was Judge Roy Scream...2 credits missed on this trip.

@Texcoaster, that Uncle Steve guy is not who we talked to and the supervisor we mentioned was not the President either. I think the supervisor was Joan and the carpenter was Dave...if I am not mistaken...although Dave was handsome as well. They were both extremely nice and welcoming employees as I wish all Six Flags employees would be!

Beautiful day at the park today. Giant was running well, as was Titan. Got three rides on Giant, longest wait was about 20 min, then the queue began to back up past the bottom of the first drop. Boyfriend says it's his new #1 coaster. "Uncle Steve" was on the exit ramp with some VIPs and a camera guy. He recognized me from media day and made it a point to say "hello."

Titan was running well with two trains. It seems much tamer than it used to after stepping off the Giant just before it.

Shockwave was running as was Judge Roy Scream. That ride needs some serious help. There was new track on the turn before the lift, but not where it needed it. The bottom of every drop was bone-shatteringly brutal and each one became a test of endurance. It's possible that the front of the train was better, but after the one back seat ride, we were DONE with this coaster. It was literally a walk-on all day with half-filled trains and for good reason.

Maybe the RMC should re-do that one too!

I want to thank this site for allowing Texas Giant to be such a huge deal over the last year...you all helped to build up the anticipation for my first ride on NTG. My life as a coaster enthusiast has been missing this ride. Get your butts in gear and get on down here to Texas! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Drove to Dallas from Houston today and got there and a MAJOR storm was there. The park opened but none of the rides did. they made us take shelter. I stayed from 10 to 2 and no ride was operating but the park was crowded and school ISNT out in Dallas yet. So they started cycling trains about 2 and I was in line and it finally opened. I rode in the last seat and the anticipation grew as I moved up the lift and when I got to the top GUESS WHAT,

I WASNT impressed at all. I didnt find the ride thrilling at all. I was expecting the pull i got from El Toro when I was pulled over the first drop and The intensity of Voyage that I got when I went to Indiana. This ride DIDNT deliver ANYTHING unusual to ME. I just KNEW it was going to be as good as or better than El Toro and it didnt even touch the hem of El Toro's garment. I was SO disappointed that I only rode that one ride and got back in my car and drove 4 hrs BACK to Houston. It was too smooth and the airtime didnt do much for ME. Yeah it was some but it didnt just throw me out of the seat like others have.

I know I am probably going to get cursed out in a few but sorry on a scale of 1 to 10 I give NTG a 5. Nothing special but definitely smooth like a steelie.

^ So you are judging a ride right when it opened, and before it got a chance to warm up, and you think it is too smooth even though it is a steel coaster? I'd ride it again (after it has been given a chance to warm up) before passing judgment on it, and keeping in mind that it is not only a steel coaster, but a completely new type of experience. I'm not trying to judge your opinion of the ride, but I'd give it another chance.

My opinion of NTag benefitted from multiple rides. After my first ride, I wasn't sure what to think or how to rank it. But since it offers such a unique and exhilarating experience, it only took a couple laps for it to become one of my favorites.

^ I would also recommend giving it another chance. It really sounds like you were already frustrated with the weather conditions, and I dunno, your report sort of makes it sound like you went in wanting to hate the ride, and immediately stormed off and left as soon as it didn't live up or something.

Seriously, your entire report just comes off kind of "weird." I'd certainly give it another chance. I mean, at Texas Giant Bash I heard totally split views on people who loved the back, but thought the front was 'meh' and vice versa. Personally, I was in the camp that actually LOVED the front and thought the airtime was actually more extreme in the front seats.

But yeah, give it another chance....when your day isn't so hellish!

I had the same opinion of the ride that Laura did at first, however my first ride was in the middle, and the middle to me is just "ok". Second time was in the rear, and it was wayyy better, the front, total money. I won't go into all the details that happened on our ride in the front, but let's just say it kicked some serious ass.

I also found that nighttime (during ERT at NTAG Bash) gives the ride a little extra kick in the pants, totally awesome. Riding with several different people at bash, everyone had similar reactions that the ride was solid. Some could only take a few laps on it. Personally I tried to fill in empty seats wherever possible for maximum riding pleasure.

I'm with Robb, give it another chance, go on a Sunday in September, the line shouldn't be that bad and would give you a chance to try out multiple seats. I loved the front row, but I am starting to become partial to the 2nd/3rd rows.

If I had a guess, NTAG will most likely hit the top 10 list for 2011. Do I think it's a #1 ride, probably not, but I could see it in the #5 spot.
