Bert gets his Viking on with the TPR 2023 Scandi Tour (no Pillaging, but some Humping occured)

Day 7, June 9th (part 1) now updated: Tivoli Friheden - home to the only remaining SCAD Tower in the world. . and it's scary as $#!t, but I did it!

Day 6, June 8th part 2:  rest of the day at the incredible Hansa Park

making our way towards the front area with the big restaurant (which seemed the best bet as they had lots of options), we stumbled across a section in the middle of the park that seemed to be themed to Africa.

and, of course, they had a Jungle Safari ride.

it looked rather silly - basically an antique taxi kind of ride, but there was no line, and the ride op said we could each take our own "jeep'. . so we hopped on.

turned out to be a great decision, as this was not only stupid long and relaxing, but full of some amazing (and amazingly bad) animatronic animals.    absolutely loved this, and posted about it to the group thread the moment we got off, so folks knew it was there.

come along with me and enjoy "Africa" !

and then they apparently decided:  Enough with the realistic animals. . let's stick in one that looks like a pinata.

Big Mike loved it.

and out front.. a Giraffe apparently named "Akira". . . I mean. . .

gotta climb up and hump (I mean Hug) it. .

after our safari, it was time to eat, and the restaurant up front was like a cafeteria with a lot of options.

and this neat little kids play area in the corner, so the adults could eat in peace while the kids are distracted.  (we weren't there exactly at a meal time, so wasn't busy at all, but did see many other TPR folks in there too).

can't remember what I got.. but I do recall the desert was very sweet, and what looks like Schnitzel there (probably was) was pretty good, but too much gravy on it.

IMG_9506.thumb.JPG.3090696a50b10fe567dd4d427ef1e4e6.JPG

oddly, the restaurants here don't have the restrooms attached.. so had to go outside and down the way to wash my hands before eating.

while outside tho, get a wonderful view of Nessie, so stopped to snap a pic or three

again, not patient enough to sit and wait for the shot (hey, I was hungry), but Royal Scotsman *did* come thru Nessie's loop about 2 seconds later :)

food eaten, and some shopping done (magnet and T-shirt purchased. .but sadly no Nessie merch as mentioned in part 1), we headed towards the train.  Planning to take a calm, relaxing ride after a meal.

the park also has an observation tower, but unfortunately was down today as it was being painted.

IMG_9511.thumb.JPG.444f6a818c33c7c3a2b674c296b26353.JPG

the train takes you all the way around the park, and it's a really nice ride, with lots to enjoy.

here's some nature, part of Flucht von Novgorod's track (in the background behind it is track from Schwur des Kärnan). and on the left is I THINK a Starflyer (tho it could be Highlander?).

IMG_9512.thumb.JPG.4d2c406090448b9e94ac44688a3ce6e7.JPG

yup. .it's Highlander

IMG_9513.thumb.JPG.ea3c5f302de1f8ca476b915f90e73e30.JPG

the train weaves in and out, and under, some rides.   allowing for some really cool pictures.

totally forgot the park has a Troika. . . it's kinda tucked off by itself behind that building on the left - which is indoor, disco, bumper cars.  (no, really)

IMG_9528.thumb.JPG.a2befd845c2489892476f8b1d1bff436.JPG

this space here is where a Carousel is supposed to be.   They had a temporary (cheapie) one set up across the way I didn't bother with. .but the sign says they are refurbishing a classic carousel and will put it in that spot, across from the observation tower on the right.

IMG_9529.thumb.JPG.a9aa9d456313b1cb5006d2b3e87377a5.JPG

after the train ride, we were settled enough it was time to hit the water rides (and it had gotten warm enough).

over by the flume, they have some animatronic bears (I think they are bears?) that play in the clock-tower.

IMG_9537.thumb.JPG.4bbb7c1dec9b7bd5e29c75b9c10d0bb7.JPG

got more than a little moist on the flume, but it felt good!

and just outside?  a photo op.

i can ride a bear?  yes please

IMG_9543.thumb.JPG.5701a65ffcd6c22dc375d1a04a8ea2a4.JPG

and over here in this section they do have a classic merry-go-round (similar to several I saw on last year's Europe Trip).

so made a point to ride this one. . and Big Mike rode with me.

IMG_9546.thumb.JPG.dd9e17ff99ac9759530285bbb74e22f4.JPG

look how happy!
and yeah, of course I chose a bear to ride again.
(think I have Hawk to thank for this pic) :)

IMG_9549.thumb.JPG.80e9b5d268a2799014e8a2f1b9c0cf5f.JPG

another photo op, going towards the park's Supersplash, you can lower the helmet to pose.

prolly was stupid to do, but at least didn't get sick from anyone else's germs while posing.

IMG_9550.thumb.JPG.8dab841d92e02679dda0d0f8379ad4e7.JPG

the park has a few big water rides, spread out at the edges.

tho we didn't get SOAKED on the flume, some in the group were wary about getting on something called a Super Splash.

IMG_9558.thumb.JPG.d7e0b28623e5817c6a843cf2be45a253.JPG

so I ended up riding it alone.

because it wasn't busy over here on this side of the park, the ride ops had no problem letting me go in my own car.   it helped keep me a bit drier than it would have.
(think these pics are courtesy of Big Mike)

then we all headed back over towards Flucht von Novgorod. . and although we got in the Single Rider line (and there was a pretty big line). . it just happened to work out that Hawk, Doug, and I all ended up on the same train.

so Big Mike was able to get this great picture!

IMG_9565.thumb.JPG.8d386a72d43445c7e86e3f5f879151d2.JPG

what's this section. . had we been thru here yet?   I see Western theme, and American flags?

and not only is it just a pony ride. . it's a SHOOTING pony ride, and the ride keeps score!

the targets were a bit hard to hit, but when you did?  they reacted like the old Disney Shooting Gallery.. ended up being a lot of fun.

and of course, had to take this pic.

across the way was the kiddie canoe ride (the operator for the ponies was also running this one).. but the canoes were clearly not for adults, so didn't even try those.

not exactly the same, but close enough.

nobody getting off looked wet, so we all rode, and even tho it was fun?  yeah. . didn't even get spritzed with water.. . so a dry water ride.

But again, it was fun, and we got a lot of spinning during the ride.

like the canoes, they also have a kiddie log flume.

also like the canoes, this one clearly looked like there was no way an adult would fit in these barrels .. so I just took a picture of it.

it was getting close to time that we had to meet the bus, so Big Mike and I made our way around the far end of the park. (while some others ran back to get more rides on some of the coasters) and we stumbled across yet ANOTHER flume.

this one had ride vehicles shaped like viking boats.   and upon observation, it appeared to be a family version - with one adult seat and two kids seats in each boat.

there were adults and older teens riding, so we joined the line.

IMG_9616.thumb.JPG.d64382fe57aa9cb3442d76165ec29f93.JPG

and yeah. .while not all that tall, or steep?   this thing gave off a big splash.

very refreshing :)

IMG_9617.thumb.JPG.550a33a1b339204e9b4d6046c855e6e1.JPG

and for some reason, themed with Penguins, and Vikings buried up to their necks in the ground watching you on the ride.

kinda creepy, kinda cool.

I don't ride bumper cars - can mess up my back. . but as we made our way to the front gate for the bus, we just had to pop into the Disco Bumper Cars so I could take a look at them.

you enter thru a spinning walkway - apparently going to outer space.

IMG_9623.thumb.JPG.1956633fafe9e0338ba2b041848037fa.JPG

and the ride looked like a lot of fun - and was blasting music.

but no. .didn't ride.   Just took a couple of pics.

IMG_9621.thumb.JPG.b4f88aa577cd0d8b986a9d0c8af30d2d.JPG

and then we headed to the gate to meet up with the group and the bus.   We had a drive tonight, as we were headed back to Denmark - specifically to Aarhus, as tomorrow was a park that has a one of a kind in the world (now remaining) thrill.

but yeah, Hansa was a really fantastic park with a lot to do for anyone who is any "thrill level"

loved my time here.

Day 6, June 8th, post park evening. .

so back on the bus, and we headed off to Aarhus, Denmark. . which would be our basecamp hotel for the next4 parks.

I don't recall how long the drive was, but I don't have many pics out the window, so I have a feeling I napped. . LOL

but eventually we did a "food stop" for dinner in a town who's name I can't recall. . . but they had this interesting sculpture in the middle of the roundabout.

IMG_9642.thumb.JPG.31cccc6d29bda058b1615f5ad1c371c0.JPG

there were multiple food options here, and the group scattered for dinner, but many of us ended up here:   Sunset Boulevard - which I guess is best compared to Burger King or McDonald's in Denmark?

IMG_9648.thumb.JPG.ef33bd29adb8e9f507742fd23cf88850.JPG

a peek at the menu:  (lots and lots of options. . too many, really, LOL. .I had a hard time choosing what to eat)

and tho it was not really memorable as great.. I do remember it didn't thrill me with how MESSY everything was.
(seriously, I *hate* being sticky - hence my fixation with always having napkins - and this was a multiple napkin meal)

yeah. . I recall it did taste better than it looked. . but. . . ewwwww.

IMG_9643.thumb.JPG.5d574dda53e30628fffb47cb2798c69a.JPG

the fries were pretty good tho.

IMG_9644.thumb.JPG.312bf11089cdc1cd993a85fd6213c3cc.JPG

and I did like the Chili Cheese bites (at least I think that's what these were advertised as), in a chipotle mayo dip.

back on the bus and onwards to Aarhus where we checked into the Zleep Hotel - another kinda funky hotel that I really liked.

this one looked like it was intended to be an office building, but it never got completed, and they just turned it into a Hotel.

very "industrial" with exposed concrete walls, and sleek/bare furnishings, but I liked it.

we had a nice view of the town too. .

pic of Nick (and saline for contacts) on the side table - and a quick recon of the area (and found out a Starbucks in a 24 hour gas station just up the street. . . self serve, but the Starbucks machine. . so was happy - and then turned in for the night.

another GREAT day in the books, and so much more to come on this trip.

Just got all caught up on this hot, so hot, afternoon here in the Lou. The look on that kids face on the little ladybug coaster is hilarious. He is totally trying to figure out why he is surrounded by a bunch of adult American men, lol.

Great pics, Bert!

It's with a bit of a forlorn heart that I look at these trip reports as I had plans this summer to visit friends who moved to Denmark in 2021. I was going to spend a week with them and another week visiting some Scandinavian parks (and maybe a couple of German ones). My job was supposed to go from contract to permanent (it didn't) and I was counting on that sweet sweet PTO... 😢

Great trip report!

Nice to see Schwur des Kärnan with all of its theming.  When I rode it, it was very bare bones.  They did have the row selection room but all the other rooms, corridors and outside was plain concrete.

Space Race (indoor bumper cars) brings back happy memories.  Our small group would takes turns at singing "Space Race!" in a crescendo.  🤣

Day 7, June 9th part 1:  Tivoli Friheden.

getting up early, I took advantage of the nearby Starbucks machine in the gas station and walked over to get coffee, snapping a pic of the front of our hotel.
(it looks like an office building outside too. . . . I liked it, very no frills, but comfortable)

IMG_9663.thumb.JPG.bb0a34624667334cad4bf9b4e652c81b.JPG

ok.. NOW I'm ready for the day.

I was psyching myself up.  why?  you'll see.

IMG_9664.thumb.JPG.7c1c2d07b94e62a37ef5827f7e365b71.JPG

very quiet in the morning in Arhus . .

IMG_9665.thumb.JPG.437ea8a32ad7498a3b6bd459f3849d49.JPG

with a lovely church closeby - tho the one time I tried to go take some pics of it, as Big Mike and I got closer to it, we discovered that there was a Casket being unloaded and seemed tacky to take pics during a funeral.   (I think I might have some closer shots of it on another day tho).

IMG_9668.thumb.JPG.c0c1bceb7f979e10941831ead8942e12.JPG

walking back to the Hotel, to get ready for the bus this morning. .

IMG_9669.thumb.JPG.7d96d93184e0044550d9fcfaeef47ad2.JPG

we were headed to a smaller park today, Tivoli Friheden, in Arhus Denmark.

IMG_9671.thumb.JPG.d921f76e6bbfab78433f7374d46fc75c.JPG

the "big" reason we were coming here?  that tower in the background of the prior pic, and this one below.

the last operating SCAD tower in the world.

SCAD = Suspended Catch Air Device Tower.

and I'm terrified of Heights.   yeah.  hence the need for coffee this morning.

IMG_9673.thumb.JPG.cf1bef0fcc12cb4fd31521519ffcb71b.JPG

for a smaller park, they do have a lot of rides, tho other than the SCAD tower, nothing really "extreme". . more family thrill stuff.

IMG_9674.thumb.JPG.77928ec055931a64d685ef6f335055ea.JPG

very cute logo tho.

IMG_9675.thumb.JPG.731540c9e64d7dac906fd6e2d7b090f0.JPG

Us, along with some school kids (I think?) got entry early and we headed directly for the tower.

IMG_9678.thumb.JPG.f89aa14773ca9a9e32e0a228afd748e8.JPG

passing a very nice two tier carousel

IMG_9679.thumb.JPG.095689c4bdae02d15ce89d34792a761d.JPG

and a decent ferris wheel.

IMG_9680.thumb.JPG.0549fac2a90cc0d97eba1f0d45f98f65.JPG

for some reason the Pizza place (called PIT.sa - yeah. .I dunno, but it works, LOL) had Carousel Horses on it's sign.
Wasn't super crowded when we went there to eat lunch later.  A surprise, as the park was full of school kids.  but it made for a nice quiet meal later.

IMG_9682.thumb.JPG.e573f833ffa1541eb4dc294d4c039e13.JPG

IMG_9688.thumb.JPG.b26b17581805cf9bb82bb76e16f3a1cf.JPG

IMG_9689.thumb.JPG.ad39c6ea76a0a7b7ae294b032f45b0e3.JPG

Standing at the base of the tower, I started to have some doubts.

not everyone was going to ride it.. so there was no shame in backing out.   But I had PROMISED myself that I was going to do things I'd be scared to do.   My spouse dying suddenly showed me life is short, and there are no guarantees. . so I was determined to ride it - if I could.

IMG_9686.thumb.JPG.7d371cc4e5ee08753e191565d5161476.JPG

you see, they have a weight limit - minimum AND a maximum.  and they put you on a scale to make sure you fall in that range.

I had an out if I was too heavy. . but I actually was a good amount below the top weight. . so I was gonna force myself.

tho probably shouldn't have watched the first couple of folks go. . . .

IMG_9690.thumb.JPG.708badf58b1e1c34b9eb9116927ba5c7.JPG

IMG_9692.thumb.JPG.3da7a7d97df6af567bff62488e651895.JPG

IMG_9695.thumb.JPG.720ef8c487e2c804406e11f7ab2069bb.JPG

when it was my turn, we got suited up - complete with a hard "shell" attached to our backs.

here's Steve and I. . . yeah. . look how "confident" I am.

(think these pics are courtesy of AJ ?)

IMG_0017.JPG.c45f9bf05392abe816d6d22ff4e5a74b.JPG

IMG_0019.thumb.JPG.51eff470e6d2057a5a65c468f0d8c6a9.JPG

then they put you into a tiny elevator, and bring you all the way up to the top.

here's Jon watching us up there.. he stayed on the ground.   smart man.

IMG_0018.JPG.d4328fc661b6330704ea6fef13b44b2b.JPG

thanks to Elissa (this video) and Robb (the next video). . . my turn is documented from the bottom of the tower, and the top.

yes. . I'm quiet.   I honestly, was too terrified to scream.

I think some folks lost money, if they bet I was gonna be loud.

but I did it.. my legs were shaky, but I managed to "gracefully" get out of the net at the bottom.

IMG_0040.thumb.JPG.324665ed14070e202b8ccc4ac0f808d0.JPG

and was shocked that I did it.

IMG_0041.thumb.JPG.e3a352376cce27c62a59bc8f7f2715b8.JPG

and then immediately broke down crying the moment I had all the gear off. . . .

yeah.

but I DID it!

IMG_9696.thumb.JPG.3f5c6ac3a4728df895291f60d9cb0d96.JPG

once i got myself all composed again?  I rewarded myself with Ice Cream while watching everyone else who wanted to go, take a turn (the elevator only carries 5-6 people at a time, so it was small groups).

IMG_9715.thumb.JPG.e2198ca42125da0b8598236963ba5a4e.JPG

and then we were given lunch vouchers, and let loose to do what we wished in the park.

as not a huge park, with no really extreme coasters, it was an excellent opportunity to spend just half a day here, and then take in some local sights/museums. . as there are lovely canals and architecture here in the city.

IMG_9717.thumb.JPG.d842ef75a59a096a4ea75faadae453c3.JPG

IMG_9718.thumb.JPG.b8c424c25c1b186f9be2489cbb3cb34d.JPG

this is one of the 3 coasters in the park: Tyfonen - a spinning wild mouse.  (or is it called Spiseriet ?  I didn't see the Tyfonen naming on the outside of this ride)

(the park used to have a Suspended looping coaster - extreme - but after some injuries / deaths, the park removed it last year. . tho the ride pad is still there, now with some "jumping" playground stuff there.    and they did just announce a decent sized new coaster will be coming in 2024. . I'd assume in that spot)

IMG_9732.thumb.JPG.af234c83a6f98d75940cadecd67bb1e3.JPG

you are EVIL. . I did you once. . never again. . . . well. . not in the same way, I guess. . .

IMG_9733.thumb.JPG.e991da9c98c8fefb627e1a97f5cf60ee.JPG

IMG_9726.thumb.JPG.a07830d9146a2ef76cd1d6d6fdd6bb35.JPG

Somehow I didn't get a pic of the outside of this ride, but it just cracked me up.

at one point it clearly was a haunted house ride thru.

then they apparently decided to make it like Resident Evil with Zombies among the haunted house. . oh, and make it a shooting ride.   in 3D - which didn't work that well (think un-maintained Six Flags Level).

I mean, if you're going to SHOOT, might as well be fully immersive and make the riders cops.

well. . we can slap "Police" on the side of the ride vehicle.. that makes it fully immersive, right?

IMG_9727.thumb.JPG.2e0fa18439efba3b55fa8c3a88dee78a.JPG

it was so hysterically awful. . with the vast majority of the 4 3D screens being blurry messes, even with the glasses on - that made everything else so dark, so the remaining practical effects that were NOT part of the shooting became really hard to see.

and for some reason the "scorboard" at the load station, not at the exit.

very pointless. . but funny to ride (once) for the "what the F did I just ride?" quality.

IMG_9728.thumb.JPG.3ba0d2e92e864a58012c3b7664919296.JPG

I mean. . look at the front of that vehicle.

It's a POLICE CAR, I tell ya!!!

IMG_9729.thumb.JPG.d30747e20e8818194c25ba2b4be7cdcb.JPG

this is another of the rides I forced myself to get on. . I was terrified of it, and this is really the only other "thrill ride" in the park.

heck..it's in the park logo, showing it going almost upside-down with free spinning seats.

But I took a deep breath and got on it.

IMG_9731.thumb.JPG.3947d2f0dfba07b46751d1b7f1340c5c.JPG

and it ran a SUPER gentle program.

these pics are really as high as it went, and the seats did not free spin (I asked the op about it when he was uncuffing us, and he said the seats hadn't flipped in a while, they stopped doing that).     I have to wonder if it ran a more gentle program because of all the kids here today for the school event?

so I rode it, but then was a little embarrassed I had been afraid of it.

IMG_9735.thumb.JPG.95f0962ce502d2e7f95d1783836b8d52.JPG

IMG_9736.thumb.JPG.3a2681538e1fc6fdde165e83442e3eaa.JPG

IMG_0027.thumb.JPG.d233b083473770eefa6cc5942162d714.JPG

they also have a smallish drop tower next door. . but I skipped that, having had enough "freefall" today.

IMG_9734.thumb.JPG.e22814eb51416f8a37660a5130c5a83b.JPG

IMG_9737.thumb.JPG.4bad4a42efea026304d38c5470f6b2dc.JPG

a low to the ground air-race (not Zamperla tho). . got some of the TPR folks excited. . and David (and Jonathan) had the kids in awe by how much flipping they got during their cycle. . . tho if I recall, the operator cut the cycle a little short to protect the record that someone had on the flips for the year.

IMG_9739.thumb.JPG.8a09c0875086546d91c395bbd873a1e8.JPG

IMG_9740.thumb.JPG.03f2f698d4820bafbd44eb549656df5f.JPG

and yes... with only 3 coasters, I rode all 3.

here's Dragen - the park's wacky worm. . that went around, I think, five times?   All I recall is the transitions weren't super smooth and I was ready for it to stop, and we kept going!!

IMG_9746.thumb.JPG.23788d41b28c737e04d849249b60ce30.JPG

something that got repeated on the park's 3rd coaster: Bisværmen (Bee Swarm) - a spinning coaster.

IMG_9742.thumb.JPG.a2c763e0ac51baebe4e2c811e2f1a483.JPG

look at me. .all smiles.    Happy we're riding a spinning coaster BEFORE we eat lunch.

IMG_9743.thumb.JPG.c2b43844c4a3830c41faf31ace0bd9e9.JPG

IMG_9744.thumb.JPG.dcab5d45795483121e204b560d94bf21.JPG

not super intense..but it spun, a LOT.   and we were unbalanced, because of the two kids on the back of our car.

who BEGGED the operator to send us thru on another cycle (after it had gone around 4 times in the 1st cycle). . so she did.   yeah. .8 laps was a lot of spinning.

but was fun, I'll admit.

IMG_9745.thumb.JPG.75e035b5fc915d2309fa61d85056723a.JPG

even tho we knew we were having Pizza Buffets at the next two parks.. . the Pizza place really did look to be the best choice - it was quiet, and the food looked decent.

so here was lunch:

IMG_9747.thumb.JPG.107cf4d7a3eae8c408a8fc8b3c5762ea.JPG

IMG_9748.thumb.JPG.fcb81bb7a9233736a998898e012363fc.JPG

complete with yet another of the same scary clown.

I guess he must be a famous "clown type" in Denmark.

at least he was in Black and White and not with a blood red mouth this time!

IMG_9752.thumb.JPG.cdf5b16af2a7577955789072a82fd953.JPG

right next to the Pizza place was the Ferris Wheel. . so that seemed to be a good place to go next - a calm ride.

IMG_9753.thumb.JPG.d9b3830ce8c43e4efc6f92e0105c9acc.JPG

with an animatronic George Ferris in the queue.

do I know why?  no, I don't.   Was George Ferris Danish?

IMG_9754.thumb.JPG.01304e3d4a0418e03d1d979e1e1bcaff.JPG

Myself, Hawk, Doug, and Big Mike riding the wheel

IMG_9756.thumb.JPG.22180ab4d3014717dc445cf05a3b5cbb.JPG

wait wait wait.. .what is that coming off the tower??  is that a zip line???

Oh, HELL no.

IMG_9758.thumb.JPG.ce0c07894ff7eb36343d01a9a49141b6.JPG

but it doesn't LOOK like a zip-line. . it looks like they are riding a bike?

and it spins as it goes up?

hmmmmmmmm

IMG_9759.thumb.JPG.8aa11fba09b74c8cfc2005d1578155a3.JPG

IMG_9760.thumb.JPG.6a0d35316fa682fda1427a7d271ae3a7.JPG

and oh. . look how close we are to the Carousel!   I know what I'm doing next

IMG_9761.thumb.JPG.5a897403725fe1a09b53394962c82ae4.JPG

overlooking more of the park. . there's a whole other section (more park, with only some smaller rides) on the left - that my pic of came out blurry)

IMG_9762.thumb.JPG.6c7bb2c1e5a972623a0f21cc366be8e8.JPG

I was proud of myself for waiting, but now it was time for carousel.

and as I got closer to it, I saw it really was an older carousel that was very well maintained, rather than a newer version with plastic figures.

there were no other takers - you can see the operator just hanging out on the horse.   he was amused the grown men wanted to ride.

IMG_9763.thumb.JPG.8a5847cc628a2ecc02f5ed1b5287a01d.JPG

IMG_9765.thumb.JPG.a4f8c20b2aebc3183d2e85b94078d4a3.JPG

of course, we headed upstairs to the upper deck

IMG_9766.thumb.JPG.8570ab565beaea2430a808748f195979.JPG

where Hawk and Doug rode in a suspended "balloon" over the lower deck

IMG_9767.thumb.JPG.80e6bb848610d6bc97e53f5ab77e2d02.JPG

and myself and Big Mike rode in Separate "tubs"

IMG_0029.JPG.7a7ba9e9965ac64ff67dd36f7d46b4e9.JPG

some really nice design work up here. . even if the color palate was a bit ugly (too much repainting, I think)

IMG_9770.thumb.JPG.761bc3e6ddaead870d4226c50beef91e.JPG

but as usual. . in my happy place.

IMG_9769.thumb.JPG.7a8ea90b24b398f758a54e13ba7dc15b.JPG

and I got to be a 4 year old, giggling at how the flower above me looks kinda like a butt-hole.

tee-hee

IMG_9772.thumb.JPG.f3e446aaf11320c9852bcdd592ce3aba.JPG

I have ZERO memory of this. . but apparently Tivoli Friheden has a shooting "theater" type attraction

IMG_9773.thumb.JPG.2fc34d9f9271b212ec89c1fdfbf56380.JPG

and Big Mike won, and was "Legendary!" from our die on "Neon Ninja"

I was only "Awesome!"

IMG_9774.thumb.JPG.ad0d9163cc38ff692d9fb62d401f291b.JPG

this I DO recall.. it was an "Illusions" house, that also was a fun house.

not as good as the ship themed one at Bakken (or the one that tried to kill me later at Grona Lund). . but I liked it.

remember that "Zip Line" thing that was attached to the SCAD Tower?

well, it turned out it was an upcharge (something insane like only $3.50 per ticket) to ride this spinning "bike" thing up to the top of the tower.

you had to have two people to ride, so Hawk volunteered to go with me, and I again - fear of heights and all - headed back up to the top of the tower.

here we are looking all Motorcycle-y badass as we're about to launch into space

IMG_9809.thumb.JPG.5fdf817e33fb37f3ca392b084782d52e.JPG

and by "launch". . I mean, slowly get pulleyed up to the top of the tower.

they dont' wanna take ANY chances on things (or you) falling off the "bike". . so well secured with belts and chains (oh Daddy!) and NO loose articles allowed.

IMG_9778.thumb.JPG.e8056d843e0d3577531071289cf89f89.JPG

I'm King of the World, Hawk!!!!

IMG_9782.thumb.JPG.85e586e7cbbed98813c270aa0033e614.JPG

whee.. .

IMG_9783.thumb.JPG.e6c4d03b5561c71165f176a27d1f73ad.JPG'

tho fear of heights, I really wasn't scared here, because we were so well secured in.

in this pic you get a good view of the tiny elevator they bring you to the top of the SCAD tower in.

IMG_9785.thumb.JPG.7f71859db14cff871ba255765bb87eda.JPG

and then I discovered we could spin via the "steering wheel"

yeah, we still look like we're sitting on a flying toilet, but at least it made it a bit more fun.

after the fun, a few folks wanted to ride the swings, and Big Mike wanted to do bumper cars.

I just wanted to sit.. so plopped down for a cycle on "Bench: the Ride" and took some pics of them enjoying.

IMG_9807.thumb.JPG.568bc41f4e3c6d77e4178130c32035b5.JPG

and he's pretty aggressive in the bumper cars.. . going after folks to ram them!

oh. .I have to *thank* Big Mike for these pics of me from the Funhouse.

whee. . . .?

(THIS one is a posed pic. . I wasn't about to go down this damn slide after falling in the barrel)

enough rides we decided to head over to the "garden" side of the park.

there are a lot of "questionable" art installations over here, and the park was really starting to get crowded as it got into the afternoon.
(turns out there's a weekly concert at the park, and they have been getting really big crowds for each concert).

I asked who was playing, and was told just someone local, but everyone comes out to enjoy the music and fill the park.

one of those  art installations:

IMG_9816.thumb.JPG.32fafaf5b3a0216852dc5e59164787e4.JPG

some of the stages set up for the concert (and a playground in the back)

IMG_9818.thumb.JPG.9c969292d8111f095144aa6ff1f3336d.JPG

a kiddie bumper cars is over here

IMG_9819.thumb.JPG.6c1040c89b83ff82e2ce09730c326d83.JPG

as is a kiddie plane ride.

IMG_9820.thumb.JPG.1e9af6d3a8a10f2693bc3aed7255796a.JPG

and further back is a lake with swan boats.

IMG_9821.thumb.JPG.21a3a8241088119b4fb10479912750fa.JPG

and oh. . and obstacle course - which didn't open until the afternoon, so I think most of the TPR folks who love this kind of thing, missed it, as it was closed earlier.

IMG_9822.thumb.JPG.8dd07246026ddd01a9c3eb1871fd98de.JPG

it's a pretty long course too. . as you can see here, it goes over the lake on rope bridges.

IMG_9823.thumb.JPG.f5c8134e0713c996afcec6625e4f737d.JPG

it was open. . there's a kid on the platform up top (just behind the grey support on the left)

IMG_9824.thumb.JPG.74c03e7a1f7d250b56aa411e65071f94.JPG

and here's one of the bands that was playing. .they sounded pretty good from what we heard.

really loved these deco light fixtures. .

IMG_9829.thumb.JPG.0ea7fdff09e18ec4acc3ee2d5d730d5b.JPG

after checking the times of the Museum in downtown - and really was excited and wanted to go by the museum tonight - I believe we headed out from Tivoli Friheden around 3:30 pm. . as more and more people poured into the park.

IMG_9830.thumb.JPG.7f23550bd72e986445731a3e0717a324.JPG

a look at the bike parking, as we went around the corner to the Taxi/Lyft/Uber stand.. yah. .was getting busy.

IMG_9831.thumb.JPG.6e292358697a4d78d5ca9030b35c9051.JPG

and with that, we grabbed an Uber, and headed to the Arhus Museum to check it out, as they were open for a few hours still.

to be continued. . .

unfortunately, Tivoli Friheden did not offer really anything in terms of branded souvenirs. . certainly not magnets.

but I did pick up this (they also had a hat, but I tend not to wear many hats, and have a ton of them that I inherited from Nick. . so went with the pin).

I'm proud of myself for doing it. . . so I'm glad I got the pin, and might make it a magnet, as I'm doing with the Bakken keychain.

Day 7, June 9th part 2 (of 3): afternoon/evening:  How about some Culture?

the group I had ended up closing out Tivoli Friedhen with wasn't he only group that also wanted to check out some of the stuff in Aarhus

- in particular the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum (which was open until 9pm).

but i think we might be the only group that looked at a map, said "nope, that's too far to walk" and Uber-ed it :)

not exactly sure what this building was across the street from the museum, but I thought the architecture was interesting, and so snapped a couple of pics.

IMG_9834.thumb.JPG.bdf455a6cca1bacdd4321ac86f18b0aa.JPG

IMG_9837.thumb.JPG.cbd2ac7b1f464afd6a82ca4c3ddd05cb.JPG

here is the main entrance to ARoS. . . with a glimpse of the permanent installation on the roof, that made this a "must stop" when I was in town: "Your Rainbow Panorama" by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.

IMG_9832.thumb.JPG.9fe860ead1cd7423ea18e6eb8adcab7b.JPG

IMG_9833.thumb.JPG.49ab5e3419d589a69dc6ed26e35cf9d0.JPG

once up the long steps into the main entrance to the museum, one is greeted by this stunning circular staircase - very reminiscent of the Guggenheim in Manhattan.

I didn't check, but would venture a guess that this museum is by the same designer.

IMG_9838.thumb.JPG.3e9de8baa464ea61c8210519152d0a1c.JPG

IMG_9888.thumb.JPG.4f1c0a869eda94c840d7040ef3a02130.JPG

In addition to the "rainbow bridge" installation, what sold the museum for me, was this special exhibit that took the entire 5th floor.

basically Propaganda Images as seen thru the lens of Pop Art.

as a huge fan of Pop Art, I was very excited for this (and as a comics fan, seeing characters I know in the art is a huge burst of excitement).

IMG_9969.thumb.JPG.d1242cfa5b7f4a5918faff1f5d2ba848.JPG

but first we were headed to the roof (at the recommendation of the security guard by the elevator, who VERY RIGHTLY pointed out that the "Your Rainbow Panorama" gets very humid as it absorbs the sun, so do that one first and then enjoy the rest of the cooler museum.

IMG_9968.thumb.JPG.2b6fd315cfe51dbcaf5da81b82d6b918.JPG

up on the top floor, this installation is very, very cool.   it's a 150 metre long circular walkway that gives fantastic views of the city, thru panels that are shaded in the colors of the rainbow.

looking out thru the one clear panel, at the walkway around the roof.

this is construction for a new wing of the museum. . I believe they said it's going to be a planetarium.

this pic is courtesy of Andy - who had walked to the museum with his group and was out on the roof itself taking pictures of the city and the port.
He saw me in the exhibit and waved and took a pic

IMG_0039.thumb.JPG.d3d34bedc49b09532c70e5613c11420c.JPG

it really was rather hot in the artwork, so I stepped down to the roof, proper, to get some pics of the city.

and some birds, just hanging out.

IMG_9851.thumb.JPG.a91a36cc654c2654fcd76f3fd5f89ee4.JPG

it really is a lovely city. . with lots and lots of really neat architecture.

floor 10 done, we went to Floor 8, for the "Human Nature" works from the museum collection:

IMG_9860.thumb.JPG.77d20c69165c1f2127362f2cef035c64.JPG

very very interesting. . a tree made from leaves pressed between panes of glass then hung as a mobile.

that this neon is in a museum made me giggle. . .I think most everyone snapped a pic of this.

IMG_9866.thumb.JPG.1441a5188202a5553660066578dfc46d.JPG

we then headed down to floor 6, titled "Far From Home II" more works from the museum collection - including the piece that the museum is most well known for:

Boy - by Australian artist Ron Mueck

this is a huge, and VERY realistic sculpture, and has an entire space (mirrored) in the gallery to itself.

down on this floor was more my type of "pop art" stuff, and I started taking more pictures - tho not as many as I'd take of the actual Propoganda as Pop Art on level 5 :)

regardless, I didn't understand this one at all. . but I found it beautiful and disturbing at the same time.

they even had one piece of Proper "Pop Art" on display up here, using Jack Kirby Panels from Captain America.

not quite as successful as what Lichetenstein was doing with the comic panels. . but I do like it. . .

then going down to the main Exhibit I was interested in, the very first thing greeted by is a huge canvas titled "Fucky-Strike Bureau of propoganda". .and I already knew I was gonna love this exhibit, and spend more time here than Doug, Hawk, or Big Mike cared to  (I was correct. . eventually Doug and Hawk split off to get food and Big Mike hung in there with me to finish the museum and do a few other things).

fantastic. .    as a temporary exhibition they didn't really have any magnets avail with these (only some prints).  lucky me, as I saved a ton of $$.
(no wall space for prints unless I simply MUST have them. . and was able to pass on these, as much a I loved some of them)

Hawk and Doug had split off to find food, and Big Mike was wandering, so I headed down to 3 where there was a lecture about LGBTQ (didn't stay to listen to it, but there were some exhibits on the topic sprinkled around this floor.

in the trip chat, some of the others had posted not to miss the basement because it was very strange (I think perhaps that was Andy or Steve). . and I had thought they were talking about this exhibit, which was rather Fv@ked up. . .

imagine my surprise when I went down to the zero level for a winding batch of rooms in a Permanent Installation that would give Meow Wolf a run for it's money!

a quick perusal of the gift shop. . where I picked up this magnet:

IMG_5276.thumb.JPG.0f7c330ac7e22ee13e4b8bbb6de08950.JPG

and then we were on our way.

I stopped and asked a guard the directions to Aarhus Domkirke (the well known Cathedral), and she assured us it's an easy walk, up some of the beautiful canals. . . so with her directions, big Mike and I headed out on foot to check out the Cathedral (and the close to it Viking Museum, and Museum of Gender - if either were still open).

to her credit, it WAS a lovely walk. . and past the university and entertainment area. . . so lots and lots of folks out and about (we even passed Doug & Hawk eating in a cafe and said hello as we walked by)

so many interesting stores here!

IMG_9978.thumb.JPG.7ed5ea65bb96ae73a61c27f65e30116c.JPG'

is it a clothing store?

or a shoe store?

or a nudist colony money laundering front?

I'm confused!

around the corner was the Cathedral. . .

I thought this was the Viking Museum. . . sadly was closed (they closed at 6 I think).. but looking at the pics, perhaps it's a theater?

they seem to be advertising some shows (King Lear)

the Gender Studies museum was also closed. . but they had this interactive display out front encouraging you to see if you fit in the gender shape.

shame they were closed, but we decided to wander up the side streets to the port area, and just enjoy the scenery.

a big building by the port. . perhaps an amphitheater for music/shows?

IMG_0013.thumb.JPG.5b894f31dc0a66a1aa93ed6bc5a5f6c4.JPG

and I had seen this graffiti on flyers around town. . . so I think it might be a well known one (or artist). . but it was kinda neat, so snapped a pic of it.

and at this point, my feet were hurting. . so I said to Big Mike, "I'm gonna flag down a cab, and cab it back to the hotel". . .

so we did, and had a nice driver who told us all about the city while taking us back to the zleep in. . . where I crashed hard from a full day.

but was excited, as tomorrow was Djurs Sommerland. . . a park I had very much been looking forwards to.     I was worried I wouldn't be able to sleep due to the excitement, but I was out immediately  (and probably kept AJ up with snoring, since I was so exhausted).

hope you've enjoyed this update!

Ha, ha.......just like I noted on FB in the pic before the drop on the tower you totally look like you just shit yourself and are trying not to let on. Proud of you for doing it though!!

They must have just been honoring Ferris because he was American and his original wheel debuted at the Chicago World's Fair in the 1890's. Maybe of Danish descent? If I remember correctly he didn't get fully compensated for the wheel and was involved in a lengthy court litigation and I think died prematurely. It wasn't a happy ending.
