Universal Orlando Resort (USF, IOA, Epic) Discussion Thread

P. 625: Harry Potter Ministry of Magic revealed!

Recommended Posts

But past the theme, what is there to do? Once you walk through and look at it, it's just filler to get to WWOHP. My kids aren't going to wait 30 minutes for Sinbad or Poseidon. On the other hand, JP has Discovery Center, River Adventure, Camp Jurrasic, and the flyer. Since JP is a bit spread out, there isn't a good way to expand WWHOP without getting rid of a major piece of it. They can expand to the path between Forbidden Journey and the Discovery Center, but that's not going to buy them much. Don't get me wrong, I would be sad to see LC go away. However, I would hope that it would be incorporated into WWOHP before JP.

While it may not be very popular with some people, it makes more sense to take out what's left of Lost Continent for Harry Potter World. The Lost Continent has already been pretty much neutered anyways, so why would you do the same with Jurrasic Park and have two islands of the park that are shells of their former selves. Go ahead and have Harry Potter take over Lost Continent (since Universal is hell bent on having that happen anyways) and leave Jurassic Park untouched.

Also, mods, what happened to my other thread on this topic? Why was it deleted and then why was my message to one of the mods about this issue also deleted? ....I am very confused here.

I personally do not know, but why were you starting a new topic on this subject? Anything related to Harry Potter, should be posted in this thread, no need to start a new one. Perhaps, it wasn't deleted and just merged into this one?

If you look on a map, half of Jurassic Park is basically empty space/trees, and the only thing contained in that area is the Discovery Center. The River Adventure, Camp Jurassic, and Pteranodons are on the other half. I think Poseidon's Fury, Sinbad, Mythos, the Mystic Fountain and all the themed architecture in The Lost Continent are collectively worth a lot more put together than the Discovery Center, by a long shot.

And honestly call me selfish, but I'm not really thinking of kids here, I'm thinking of what I would want most. That being said, I don't think the Discovery Center is really something that would excite most kids that much anyway, it might seem pretty dull to them, honestly, like a B-grade local museum.

Most of the Lost Continent hasn't been touched yet; Merlinwood was only one third of it, with the Arabian and Greek areas being the other two thirds. The vast majority of buildings are in those sections. Jurassic Park to me is the most lazily themed area in IoA, it is mostly just trees and similar looking buildings with vaguely tropical architecture (straw roofs etc). Jurassic Park isn't really all that much to be preserved as far as I'm concerned, it's a pretty pathetic excuse for a "themed area", with the River Ride being the only feature that really interests or excites me in the least.

It wasn't specifically about the subject of Harry Potter, just related issues to what I am discussing here (replacements of old rides, attractions, areas etc)

You do realize it's supposed to resemble the tropical island setting on which the movie was shot, right? I mean, the nerve of them trying to replicate the look of the buildings in the film, etc. Ugh.

Yes and the tropical island setting on which the movie is set doesn't look that great as a theme park area (especially when compared to an architecturally rich area like the Lost continent). You could make a "Matrix land" and just make it look like a regular city street, and that would be faithful to the movie.

I absolutely loved everything about Lost Continent from the beginning, but understand why they axed half of it to develop Potterverse. As much as I would hate to see the rest of it go it would be really cool to see Universal Creative try develop a Potter Based attraction to use the existing Poseidon's Fury concept. Ya know a hidden passage way behind a book shelve that leads to a secret wherever and whatnot with a tour guide from Hogwarts or the Ministry of magic or something, maybe have some kind of Wizard duel in the main room that re-uses some of the same technology (I don't know enough about the books so suggest an actual plot for a replacement I just know that something could probably work there, and work really well) . Maybe even J.K. Rowling could help to develop some type of new story from the Potter world that necessarily isn't in the books or movies but could be used to fit the existing setup of that attraction. The Sinbad stunt show in my opinion is just okay, probably really helps park capacity on busy days but that area could probably easily be recycled into a new show/ride building of some sort. I know we all love Mythos and it would probably be the hardest thing to see go, but oh well you can have everything I guess, maybe an interactive re-themed Potter full service restaurant could work there. besides I think everyone agrees Mythos isn't quite what it used to be, but still pretty good.

Ill give Universal credit, unlike Disney, they're not afraid to completely gut or remove a somewhat classic but outdated attraction for something new (i.e. King King, Back to the Future, soon to be Jimmy neutron, Dueling Dragons, E.T. in Hollywood). There are a lot of Attractions at Disney that are "Classic" but I could care less if they were gutted and removed or completely reinvented (jungle cruise, great movie ride, small world, Universe of Energy, Star Tours).

^I think you're just going to have to accept that you're in a VERY small minority that doesn't like the Jurassic Park area of the park.

Yeah man... even I think the jurassic park section is the best the park has to offer! I feel it's really emersive and at the same time very educational!

I actually like Toon Lagoon best I think, cause its so bright and awesome, but JP was second and Marvel was 3rd, and LC was 4th. We went 2 summers ago during WWOHP construction and the lost continent was just not good. I mean, sure the construction walls were there, but there was nothing to do really besides Dragons... we had Disney reservations at Beergarten or whatever its called in Germany, so no mythos. We didn't want to do Poseidon because we had one day at both UNI and IOA and didnt want to do a show, and there was nothing else to do.

When we got to JP however it was different. The ride was fun(I like USHs better, but not by too much) and the overall area was great. We took a picture with the Trex and hung out in the playground(and we were in a group of 3 guys all ranging in age from 17 and 20) and the whole area kicked ass. Even in the playground it was fun for us to explore, it wasnt so "kiddy" where there was nothing for us to do, we went in the caves and just walked around... it was a lot of fun. LC does not have a single kid attraction, and while I did enjoy dragons it was meh as an overall area.

Sounds like you guys only saw a shell of LC. The Enchanted Oak added a lot to the area not to mention the original Dueling Dragons area and themeing. Lost continent at night was one of the coolest looking areas I have ever been to. The Potter area looks great but the old area had a better themepark feel to me.

Thing is, if gutting the Lost Continent was the only option, I may agree, but the way I see it, it's not the only option. Jurassic Park is right there and would be a better area to (partly) sacrifice. I am not talking about all of JP, just the parts between the River Ride entrance and WWOHP. Now it'd require getting rid of the Discovery Center and a few shops. I'd see that as a much smaller loss than the Lost Continent, by a long shot. Not even comparable.

I agree though that Disney needs to replace a lot of old dated attractions, like the Jungle Cruise and Universe of Energy (they ARE revamping Star Tours though). Great Movie Ride I'd leave untouched though because I would worry they'd replace everything with Disney-affiliated B-grade (or C-grade) blockbusters like Armageddon and National Treasure. For better and for worse, Universal is more innovative than Disney with creating new attractions. For better because the new attractions are often awesome, for worse because sometimes they make bad decisions in regards to what to replace. For instance I think they should've replaced the ET Adventure instead of Kongfrontation, for Revenge of the Mummy.

I agree the Enchanted Oak and Dueling Dragons theming were awesome, but I think Lost Continent is still worth preserving with what is left. Mythos and the Poseidon's Fury building in particular look amazing.

I had a 4 page reply and my son hit something on the keyboard that changed the web page and lost it all.....

Bottom line is look at the number of people visiting the attractions at JP versus those visiting attractions in LC. Not the ones walking through to WWOHP, but the ones actually at the attractions.

Replace Sinbad with a Quidditch Arena and replace PF with a wizard duel (sewer scene in the second movie would be perfect). Take the land between FJ and River Adventure and use it for additional theming. Not the DC, the land north of it.

Not sure what you mean here, because when I was there, there weren't many people at the Discovery Center at all (which is the only attraction I'm advocating getting rid of in Jurassic Park). Poseidon and Sinbad aren't great attractions per se, but they had a lot more people than the Discovery Center had.

The best things about LC aren't the attractions but the theming. Especially Mythos, the Poseidon's Fury building, and the Mystic Fountain and the area around it. To me Jurassic Park is a bit lacking in theming, aside from on the River Adventure itself. Most of it just looks like a tropical forest with lots of trees. The Discovery Center is kind of a neat building....but not as great as Mythos or Poseidon's Fury IMO. The Discovery Center seems like a diversion to me, rather than an attraction.

Additionally, entering into Jurassic Park from WWOHP with the Hogwarts Castle looming in the background, right behind the Jurassic Park archway, is kind of an embarassingly awkward sight. I'm not saying expanding WWOHP into the Lost Continent would necessarily be a bad idea in the long run. But I think they should expand into JP first, and if they still want to expand even more, then into TLC.

^We get it. You like(d) the Lost Continent. Now, get that almost everyone on this board is disagreeing with you. It happens. No need to respond to every post with basically the same defense of your opinion. Just let it go, please!

But my specific points are not being addressed, and I was also addressing specific points that people made (ie that Jurassic Park has more people in it...which I do not see as being entirely true), so I wasnt simply being redundant. No one has provided an adequate argument that the Discovery Center and the half of Jurassic Park closer to WWOHP is better than The Lost Continent.

^^Because there is no reason to provide you with an adequate argument... People are entitled to their opinions, as are you. Just because you don't agree with others, doesn't mean you have to rave on to sway them, or that they have to defend their beliefs. Respect others' thoughts and they will respect yours. There is no more reason for this discussion to continue as it is.

I do not see the point of posting on a discussion forum if you are not willing to engage in arguments about your views. But hey maybe I just have a different concept about the intended purpose of message boards than most people here do.

^The point of a discussion forum is to engage in discussions about your views... The way you go about it is far too heated. If people wanted to respond to you, they would have. The fact that you are demanding an "adequate argument" comes off as a challenge, and not as friendly discussion. That kind of thing turns people off to replying.

Egging people on to argue with you isn't the way to go about it. Try cooling your tone and being a little more respectful to the discussion of other's opinions, and the same will come to you.

We're talking about theme parks here... There's no reason to argue!

I think argument is a strong word. It's a discussion board......with arguments here and there.

I understand you're though process on the expansion into LC versus JP. It makes sense to me, but we aren't the ones making the decisions. So what are you going to do?

I will take exception to your view that the Jungle Cruise needs to go in WDW. That's a classic, and shouldn't go anywhere!
