The 2020 Coaster Poll Results are in!

The Theme Park Review Coaster Poll is an ongoing effort by myself (A.J.), Chase (Comeagain?) and Robb (robbalvey). We're continuing to work hard to develop THE definitive annual ranking of the world's roller coasters!

The reason why this poll exists is because the Mitch Hawker poll, which was considered by many to be the quintessential roller coaster poll for nearly 20 years, had kind of fallen into a black hole leaving few polls or awards that exist that we would put real faith into the results.

This year, we had over eight hundred people submit ballots! We would like to thank everyone who took the time to submit one - you're helping fulfill the poll's mission!

The way Mitch’s poll worked is that instead of being a “popularity contest” of “he who gets the most votes wins”, it actually ranked and weighted people’s real life riding experience against each other. It took into account how many coasters you’ve ridden and how those rankings compare against others with similar experiences. It also meant that no matter if you’ve ridden 50 or 500 coasters, the results were “fair and balanced.”

As a refresher, these are the rules:

  • To qualify for the poll, a coaster has to be the size of a wild mouse or larger, with a select few exceptions
  • To receive a numbered ranking, a coaster must have been marked "ridden" and ranked by at least 12 (twelve) people; any with less than that are given a provisional ranking and not included in the "top" lists
  • Individual installations of roller coaster clones (Vekoma SLC, Mack Blue Fire, etc) do NOT count in rankings; Instead, their votes are all averaged together, and they are ranked as a single entry; A clone is defined as any coaster with three near-identical installations or more
  • Any coaster that is standing but not operating (SBNO) is not ranked

Normally, the additional rule is that a coaster must have operated for the majority of the previous season (2020) to qualify for the poll. However, due to current world events, we have taken 2019 season operation into consideration as well.

Are you excited yet? Here come the results!

Coastersaurus does not belong in any 'worst' list...let alone a list with Bandit and Coaster Express!  It's a kiddie woodie.  This is why it may be time to take 'kiddie' rides off the poll.

Skull Mountain is 420 and I feel like all is right with the universe.

2020 Top 25 Overall Coasters

DISCLAIMER: Note that these results may not be consistent with the Top 25 wooden and steel coasters - the wooden results only count wooden coasters, and the steel results only count steel coasters. Some steel coasters are preferred over high-ranking wooden coasters, and vice versa. For example, Steel Vengeance was preferred more over Untamed when wooden coasters were taken into consideration, placing it at #3 over Untamed's #4. This is not the only example of this happening. These results are mainly for reference purposes, and as a data point for our poll for aggregators that use combined wooden / steel results, such as The Roller Coaster Index.

  1. El Toro - Six Flags Great Adventure
  2. Lightning Rod - Dollywood
  3. Steel Vengeance - Cedar Point
  4. Untamed - Walibi Holland
  5. Outlaw Run - Silver Dollar City
  6. Maverick - Cedar Point

Coasters that did not meet the ridership requirements

The TPR Coaster Poll requires a coaster to have twelve (12) rankings, or "riders", to qualify in the results each year. This is to help get to a consensus - and to prevent single ballots from skewing results in one direction or the other for a particular coaster. Coasters that do not meet this requirement are given a provisional result but are not included in the official ranking.

Notable coasters that did not meet the requirements for 2020 include but are not limited to:

  • Hakugei - Nagashima Spa Land
  • Zadra - Energylandia
  • Taiga - Linnanmäki
  • Extreme Rusher - Happy Valley Beijing
  • Python in Bamboo Forest - Nanchang Sunac Land
  • Ultra Twister - Rusutsu Resort
  • Bullet - Selva Mágica
  • Soaring with Dragon - Hefei Sunac Land
  • Gravity Max - Lihpao Land
  • Starry Sky Ripper - Joyland
  • Dauling Dragon - Happy Valley Wuhan
  • Storm - Etnaland
  • Mystic - Walibi Rhône-Alpes
  • F.L.Y. - Phantasialand
  • Junker - PowerLand
  • Wood Coaster - Knight Valley
  • Dynamite - Freizeitpark Plohn
  • Wood Express - Parc Saint Paul
  • Panic Coaster Back Daaan - Tokyo Dome City
  • Roar-O-Saurus - Story Land

If you want to see any of these coasters ranked on the poll, be sure to go out and ride them once their parks open back up!

Skyrush in #3!? 7th overall?? This makes me very happy 😃 And damn I do regret not going on Mine Blower last time I was in Disney. Heard good things but didn't expect that!

Thanks again for all the work that goes into this!!

Coaster Express earned that spot as the worst coaster in the world.  I agree wholeheartedly with that selection.

Looks like RMC dominated the top of the rankings again.  Hopefully more people can get on Hakugei and Zadra so they can get a clearer ranking since it looks like they would have been top 5 rides as well.

I want to laugh at the fact that people who live among us believe that Copperhead Strike is better than Superman at Six Flags Mexico but then I remember that I have Mystery Mine in the top 20 and Wild Chipmunk ahead of Ravine Flyer II so I guess I have no room to speak.

There's always some interesting results in this poll. I kind of forgot about Colossus at Heide Park since it was closed for a few years so that popping up in the top 10 was surprising. I remember that coaster ranking fairly high before it closed but I don't recall it being commonly in top 10's, but maybe that's just my poor memory. I certainly don't remember it being rated higher than Balder.

Always interesting to see where all the B&M inverts fall. Looks like Nemesis, Pyrenees, Montu, & Katun were the top 4 this year, which seems accurate, then Black Mamba was 5th above Afterburn, Raptor, and Alpengeist which was a bit surprising.

Also I guess Hagrid's ranked the highest of the major theme resort coasters (Disney, Universal etc.) which was expected, but then Big Grizzly Mountain at Hong Kong ranking higher than Tron was a surprise. I'd expect Velocicoaster to take that top spot next year, wouldn't be surpsied if that doesn't end up in the Top 10 overall based on the type of ridership it's going to see. Also on that topic Rip Ride Rockit ranking higher than Space Mountain is pretty shocking lol. I mean I enjoy Rockit, but give me any of the Space Mountains any day.

This is surely one of my "lol u srs?" moments but I enjoy Rip Ride Rockit. Like, more than I imagined, and that vs Space Mountain? RRR > SM any day in my book.

Then again I didn't hate Grizzly at CGA. I didn't like it lol it was slow, boring, if it wasnt for the rattling I'd have felt nothing, but thing is it wasn't the roughest thing ever. Far from it (prob bc it went too slow to be that rough!). I just thought it was meh....rode and forgot. I had much worse rides on like GASM at SFoG or Hershey's wildcat.

But that's why this is great! Difference in opinion is good :)
Oh except this, Bill is right to say Copperhead Strike > any RMC is a crime against humanity 😛

Cheetah Hunt was 69 but I'm still working on the correlation to make a joke about it.

This goes to show why you cant always trust "what you hear/the vibe you get" I really had the impression White Lightning was generally considered better than Mine Blower. Yet here its not just flipped by Mine Blower 16 White Lightning 43. Interesting! Also Beast, top 30 right around  Thunderhead and Raven. Very interesting. I know I was pleasantly surprised (granted the bar was low) guess I'm not alone.

And yes, some of these look superb and clearly deserve to be up in the rankings. Well, guess I'm off to China! No biggie XD

Final note: The vindication continues! Despite the hefty, yearly, crap that MForce gets from the enthusiast community. Still #14 and above a bunch of RMC's, Phantom's Revenge, SFNE Superman :D
The fans exist, they just aren't as vocal as me XD

Agreed! I didn't rank any kiddies because yeah its just a different type of ride. They certainly are not "bad" ya can't really compare with Voyage and El Toro

If the mid-course doesn't trim you on Superman, I think it's definitely better than Copperhead Strike.  But if it slows you down, the return run can be a dud on that ride and then I think it's a much closer fight.

Really surprised and impressed with how Skyrush landed this year. It 100% deserves its spot up there, a gem unlike any other.

Wow, go Everland! You only have 2 big coasters since you demolished Eagle's Fortress and you managed to get one into the top 10 and one into the worst 5. Surely the biggest jump in quality from any parks coaster to the next.

Ha! That's a great point!

AJ, can you look at the list of the parks and see which parks have the greatest spread  between best and worst coaster?

Agreed! I personally loved Little Dipper. I wonder... are there enough coasters where the poll could do a "best kiddie coaster" category?

Yay for results! Thank you to all involved. These rankings are so much more fun to analyze than the vastly overrated GTAs.

Skyrush taking #3 steel and #7 overall makes my heart happy. I haven't ridden it in 5 years but very few coasters, if any, match its intensity and awesomeness. I can't wait to ride it again.

Pleased to see my love of Pyrenees isn't out of nowhere. Just behind Nemesis for #1 invert. Was without a doubt my favorite coaster in Japan and SO grateful we managed to sneak a few rides in on a rainy, rainy day. I would return to that park before returning to Fuji-Q (probably not before Nagashima, though... need to get on Hakugei).
