Great report as always Adam, I'm not the biggest Potter fan but I'd love to check that out if I'm ever in London. I wonder if the expansion is going to be just more of the same type of exhibits or if they're going to add anything else.

After our time at the Harry Potter Studio Tour London and Matilda, it was time to begin the portion of our trip dedicated to exploring London... While throwing in a few touristy attractions and lots of good food! We started with The London Dungeon and were off!

1.thumb.JPG.20a900f5502d38ce2dc2ad3029ca9b4a.JPG

Take note of the Buckingham Palace advertisement...

10.thumb.JPG.2fa1c7f4c7a039855cc6c63ba485dce4.JPG

We considered checking out Shrek's Adventure since we enjoyed the unique style of the London Dungeon, but since the attraction took longer than we expected, we opted to save more time for city sightseeing.

2.thumb.JPG.d2ee12738c8f2103847c401d62470839.JPG

Our next morning started out with a visit to the London Eye complex...

4.thumb.JPG.c51b27947f029032e5f78526b4c2817d.JPG

While we wouldn't be riding the Eye until later the next night, it was neat to see this iconic attraction up close during the day.

5.thumb.JPG.cd587c455e44809a0b3790ff2f669bec.JPG

This was why we were here...

6.thumb.JPG.0c4653cf3fb2f81c320c366e729a58f9.JPG

I'd always been intrigued by the concept of The London Dungeon. The first attraction of its kind to open in stateside opened in San Francisco which we haven't been to yet, so this was the closest I was going to get to experiencing a Merlin Dungeon.

7.thumb.JPG.7e4e49374b47d224538a3a396c9bf513.JPG

There's no photos or videos allowed inside but I was pleasantly surprised to see this experience presented as a linear flow of shows and attractions rather than an indoor park that you could choose to skip and revisit offerings as you saw fit. Unfortunately The Tyrant Boat Ride was closed for refurbishment, but getting to experience all of the mini-shows was fun... Keep in mind, there's lots of plague and toilet humor involved, so this is definitely not a family attraction for those under the age of 13 (Shrek's Adventure next door appears to follow the same model as the London Dungeon with a lighter content) and probably better for guests in their late teens and above. Overall, I expected roughly an hour and a half and we were in the Dungeon for close to 2.5 hours. The closest comparison I can make is to a house at Halloween Horror Nights with little shows in each room with scares and effects in each show.

One ride that was open was Drop Dead, a hanging-themed drop ride that rather than lifting you up to drop you roughly 15 feet, actually loads from the top and drops in darkness briefly before returning to the loading platform (the floor retracts). It was a fun little pop of air that my wife had no intention of joining me for.

9.thumb.jpeg.9c9a801200818984bbd34abdb2a97b9d.jpeg

There are a few fun photo opportunities to enjoy here.

11.thumb.JPG.a8fdd0483699c0c6f7054984b6bd5bf8.JPG

Parliament and Big Ben are really sights to be seen. Big Ben was being refurbished during our visit, but having seen it before, I am enamored with the entire architectural complex surrounding it.

12.thumb.JPG.ed2c70e8036acf0907652f11f31f26f8.JPG

Sea Life is also a part of the London Eye complex... It was easy to see how the original conceit of the Orlando Eye complex came together with the Eye, Sea Life and Tussaud's (also nearby in London) being so closely located. I'm just bummed a Dungeon style attraction hasn't made its way to Central Florida yet.

13.thumb.JPG.e0ffefa48fc3a3dc8c9fd2db4e3fa4da.JPG

It was odd not seeing the aftermath of the Silver Surfer's visit here... It must've taken a lot of effort to fill the gaping hole in the Thames after that moment in history.

14.thumb.JPG.11c8aebfa47085dd797f77a89cf586e5.JPG

And we're... moving on.

It wouldn't be a London trip report without a photo of this sign from somewhere.

Westminster Abbey is gorgeous...

17.thumb.JPG.61e52668034cd3e37cca17e0f676d9d0.JPG

But unfortunately no photos allowed inside.

London has no shortage of gorgeous, storied structures in a very short distance from each other.

My wife had great interest in visiting royal establishments during our trip... So to the Mews we went!

Royal carriages aplenty here...

About as close as you can get to the Royal Steeds but still neat.

23.thumb.JPG.3050d00c99480502d5b77a13e2ff3583.JPG

This is stunning.

Stopped off for a quick bit at The Breakfast Club for a fine cup of coffee...

26.thumb.JPG.d823840c7d566ad3a17b3afe37491e75.JPG

And a very atypical breakfast.

27.thumb.JPG.916e8c5453d9e48737c0b667596d25e3.JPG

Next up was Afternoon Tea at Fortnum & Mason. We originally figured Harrod's would be the place to go but we were recommended to go here instead... Pictured here is one of the best tea's I've ever tasted... So I bought some to bring home!

28.thumb.JPG.1dcc03c99bd687e6002e3248def3077c.JPG

The best part of the experience? Everything was all you care to enjoy!

29.thumb.JPG.962e52d544f2bec4a837427bba875bab.JPG

(With the exception of this beauty...) This lobster omelette (topped with fresh truffle) was easily one of the best things I've ever consumed. Legit tears during consumption.

30.thumb.JPG.7d0ae7aa84f6a70f73dff807c8010f53.JPG

Not as much gold leaf as I've consumed at Amorette's Patisserie at Disney Springs, but delicious all the same.

31.thumb.JPG.3d22f1b236da0e27ad7a68c6ec14c9d8.JPG

I was in fine food HEAVEN!

32.thumb.JPG.60cf503f9b55346d9128859cc679afe3.JPG

Like Harrod's, Fortnum & Mason is like a retail playground with fresh foods, sweets, ice cream, tea, clothing, accessories... This place was simply insane.

And here's lots of Turkish Delight.

33.thumb.JPG.bfc96db1033c6402f1cdc6ece8f17710.JPG

We had a lot of macaroons this trip.

After such success with TKTS the night before with Matilda, after that show we decided to run back to see what else we could get... And we landed on Kinky Boots.

39.thumb.JPG.79e3043d2f4a3fac44353456dfe472c2.JPG

We simply weren't prepared for how AMAZING this show was. The music and energy of the show is infectious and the message is a wonderful one. If you haven't had the chance to see Kinky Boots, I would HIGHLY recommend it!

40.thumb.JPG.3274db82a648457de1017b8540abe7e7.JPG

Such a phenomenal cast!

41.thumb.JPG.301d439084bfe76c6a2d1b8c2e84c683.JPG

After the show we ran over to Chinatown to experience Opium, a speakeasy themed to the Orient with each rooming hosting a different menu and style inspired by a varying region of China.

42.thumb.JPG.831df46ab0010ef312f0126aa50d6978.JPG

The atmosphere here was wonderful.

43.thumb.JPG.7db0c2f2e91dbbf7d6858b70f1ccd73c.JPG

All of the drinks were regionally inspired with unique ingredients and clever presentations. It was all wonderfully overwhelming.

44.thumb.JPG.b94c3dc44eac566e7583f16e926e351b.JPG

My smoky mezcal drink was easily the best of its kind that I've had and the presentation was fantastically aromatic.

45.thumb.JPG.37c6afcf2c929cdb48f157dce10f3cbb.JPG

My wife's drink included safe and vodka and it came with a sugar paint and a sugar wafer that could be painted, dipped in the drink and then consumed! It was amazing!

46.thumb.JPG.f29a2b2aa765b31b256da09d2b6786f2.JPG

Being conveniently located in London's Chinatown, we were able to order dumplings and shu mai... Later that night we saw runners carrying these steam trays from their restaurants up to Opium, which was pretty neat!

47.thumb.JPG.c2b443d1a38f88c046df0360a6cf3cf0.JPG

My third drink was bourbon based but came with a multi-grain cracker and a sugar-printed butterfly, all of which was safe for consumption... I was in a great place by the end of our time at Opium and it was a great note to end a fantastic day on.

Great report as always, I remember visiting the London Dungeon as a kid (maybe not the best attraction for a 10 year old but I think I turned out okay) and just being blow away by it. Would love to experience it again as an adult and see if it's as much fun as I remember.

I love these kinds of themed restaurants, especially (sort of)

small ones hidden away like treasures for all to find.

Loved your London touring, too. Thanks for sharing.

Our final day in London included a mix of attractions historic and more modern... It was really about getting as much in our day as we could, as the next day would be the start of the next leg of our trip, taking us far away.

50.thumb.JPG.3cf3e38fe26781b6bb83fccf2251f00d.JPG

Our morning began at the Tower of London... It is neat to see the representation of different animals that were kept on the grounds here.

51.thumb.JPG.def43d1c65020e0756a454d81827410a.JPG

Pretty storied.

52.thumb.JPG.1aa62a1414d73d6e0754dd0ddb3619cd.JPG

And here is where the Crown Jewels are kept.

53.thumb.JPG.5d1ce38227173e1ef86f3bec9aafa2b0.JPG

We were able to see a changing of the guard...

54.thumb.JPG.3dd93defee903218ebc81df713c6d55b.JPG

The Tower of London has a dark past that would scare many and fascinate others.

55.thumb.JPG.39f5561e0dcb22c4dd2852263c6c9352.JPG

Giant ravens can be found throughout the grounds...

56.thumb.JPG.53ffc2e2538f9a2ca2e41933eeee15f1.JPG

They were bred and raised to protect the grounds a result of the king's superstitions that the Tower would fall without their presence... They are fed blood soaked biscuits as a part of their regular diet.

57.thumb.JPG.b382a0a7e07fba9089acad4cfe21a75b.JPG

Baboons were kept on the grounds back in the day.

58.thumb.JPG.488d943d73cd4259b8b57fc408be8ecf.JPG

How cool of them to actually tie into the masterful film, Muppets Most Wanted!

59.thumb.JPG.b36e49664b58d3f9be867aae11c2649d.JPG

Modern architecture towers over the classic stonework.

60.thumb.JPG.c90634b74cf6b3881e7d68549ce46f9c.JPG

I'm not going to explicitly call it out, but I took the photo at an angle for a reason... The king whose armor was fashioned in this way specifically mandated that his armor compensate for an inadequacy.

The chapel inside of the Tower of London.

62.thumb.JPG.f46b3b87161d56ed00f6b092bf8fe36e.JPG

The Tower Bridge can be seen from the grounds...

63.thumb.JPG.795e9cae43250336991440f5ea4d5100.JPG

The Tower of London was also known for its dungeon's torture methods...

64.thumb.JPG.07695478b47ca766bfca520e5886e2c7.JPG

The Tower Bridge is so iconic...

65.thumb.JPG.419b3c7e689e310e5d4ea1a428dcbf29.JPG

The London skyline really is pretty.

66.thumb.JPG.5922cd66a30333e122d20963a5d2ccda.JPG

Time to take a closer look!

67.thumb.JPG.22c43bfad8b052cf7a6ff029e1af7a15.JPG

Part of the admission access for the Tower Bridge allows you to go into the Engine Room to see the engines that drive the Tower Bridge to raise and lower.

70.thumb.JPG.d1c2eb7c50f94bff644c11416d2a8e13.JPG

I couldn't make this stuff up...

71.thumb.JPG.dec578ba54a1d7657b445779f82121e1.JPG

No escape.

72.thumb.JPG.5ac30dd94f0f5d97f263af75f5546029.JPG

St. Paul's Cathedral was beautiful.

73.thumb.JPG.8cbbdb16f95354213e509180f3070924.JPG

We happened to visit while they were filming Men in Black International out front so we weren't able to go into the Cathedral.

74.thumb.JPG.bf7b3f6156ac3caad23bf355fff732a3.JPG

The Millennium Bridge has been featured in Harry Potter and Guardians of the Galaxy, so it was neat to see in person.

75.thumb.JPG.890118e4edb0b9632e7eabe559663ce1.JPG

Wonderful.

76.thumb.JPG.640eaecdc216af16ca7972faf97d09c7.JPG

We weren't going to miss the chance to tour Buckingham Palace! Unfortunately photos or video are not allowed inside (this is the backside of the Palace that you see upon exiting the tour) but the opulence of each room is absolutely overwhelming.

77.thumb.JPG.e1d620df20de99e5f67f4810c46c76a7.JPG

Having been so enamored with Fortnum & Mason the day before, we had to stop by Harrod's... While nice, I definitely prefer F&M.

78.thumb.JPG.bfd7d161dc9a19da880e69c3e6ede2c9.JPG

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese was the next place we were directed to...

When at a storied pub, you drink beer.

80.thumb.JPG.c8f7ba77666f65330929f73c290dda02.JPG

I was told that this was the dish to get. And it did not disappoint.

81.thumb.JPG.3c5dce3f03bc1d316c350e92c6096919.JPG

There appeared to be a portable Starflyer set up nearby.

82.thumb.JPG.7f9f83f9a0162ab5273865329e71b7af.JPG

The capsules on the London Eye are far more unique than those of the Orlando Eye... Such a unique experience by comparison.

83.thumb.JPG.89a8692f519a70d55bb7c59145d7f679.JPG

At night we could see the clock faces of Big Ben more clearly.

84.thumb.JPG.f5bdcf90440d45974401c97b630c6758.JPG

After lunch we made our way to the London Eye complex again to hang out along the Thames and to take in the view.

85.thumb.JPG.5485cbdac7aa77c3ac36a603075ce46d.JPG

Quite a stunning view.

86.thumb.JPG.66ffa0cab4c5a279fcda1aff6d0d40f3.JPG

Touristy or not, I was super glad that we ended up coming back to ride the London Eye.

^ Awesome tour of London, Adam! So much to be seen, just the outside architecture, etc.

And great name for a sushi place....Yo! Sushi....very cool to see. Thanks for all the photos and

TR about it.

And that Eye ride you took.... Next time I want to ride it during nightfall. Truth!

Adam, years ago I lived in London, and wow has it changed! But ONE thing I'm so happy to hear is that Fortnum & Mason still offers the BEST AFTERNOON TEA IN TOWN! Am sooo glad you got to try it!

P.S. That evening shot of Big Ben is -- to revert to Brit speak -- BRILLIANT!

The Tower of London was the first official attraction I did when visiting London, I agree it's an amazing experience. Even if you only go to England for coasters, enthusiasts need to visit that place.

Following an incredible week in Paris and London it was time for the next leg of our trip to begin! We next embarked on an eleven night Transatlantic Cruise from Dover, England to New York City, USA! The cruise would be the longest I'd ever experienced and would bring us to a bunch of places we'd never been before... And with the Disney Magic as our floating hotel for these eleven nights, we had plenty of opportunity to enjoy some amazing cuisine, wonderful entertainment and more time to relax than we'd ever had on any vacation before!

Next stop: Cobh (Queensland), Ireland!

  • 3 weeks later...

The next morning we woke up to a unique view as we docked on in the port of Cobh, Ireland. Many will know this port by its other name, Queenstown... Queenstown being famous as the final port of call for the RMS Titanic before it left for the ill-fated transatlantic crossing that so many know how it ended.

But Cobh (the original name of the port town and the reverted name post-Queenstown) is also a gateway port to Ireland and it is not far from Blarney Castle. I'd traveled through Ireland years earlier in high school and had visited Blarney once before--it was a highlight for me then, so I knew when we found out we'd be visiting Cobh as a part of our cruise that this would be something I could share with my wife. Just like I had ten years earlier, we climbed the steps and kissed the blarney stone. Plus this time around we had a chance to explore the grounds which were pretty neat!

The night ended with another excellent dinner aboard the Disney Magic and the first of many great variety acts that would keep us entertained over the coming four days of crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

Quite the sight to wake up to...

Queenstown hosts a Titantic Experience similar to the one found in Orlando, but we were here for something a little more unique.

5.thumb.JPG.cd36ce2b1f158475defd2030e642c809.JPG

Blarney Castle has a unique beauty to it that I didn't get to appreciate quite as much due to lackluster weather during my last visit.

6.thumb.JPG.018537a029a63b5601cbfac7e3935016.JPG

Seriously folks, not for the faint of heart. The only climb more nerve-wracking than this were the ascent and descent of the spiral staircases of Notre Dame.

7.thumb.JPG.92acadf9248f9fd6c5e49b6c24f76250.JPG

Sadly no FastPass here.

8.thumb.JPG.661d71aa91a30c2e8e064d41652b443a.JPG

But the experience gives you a grand circle tour of the castle.

9.thumb.JPG.ab9c2e08c9e3a31db4b71d1932aae2bd.JPG

Blarney Castle used to be more but the structures that have survived have been maintained and partially restored to retain their storied beauty.

In case you were wondering about the significance of the Blarney Stone and why people kiss it.

12.thumb.JPG.4a7e5168bcc6ea61ae0ca77407b5ea7e.JPG

The act of kissing the Blarney Stone is a bit daunting... You lay flat on your back, holding on to two iron bars while a strong person holds onto you to lean you in upside down...

13.thumb.JPG.86688af8aebde5f305626fc403a95f2e.JPG

In for the kiss, and then pulled swiftly back up.

After some incredible first ports, it was time to begin our four day crossing of the Atlantic aboard the Disney Magic. Thanks to the extended time aboard the ship, there was an abundance of special experiences to enjoy, some signature to normal cruise itineraries and others exclusive to our sailing. Overall, it was an amazing four days filled with incredible food, wonderful character experiences and no shortage of fun!

1.thumb.JPG.1d82ec07a02b863a33058f680f0acfbd.JPG

Character Breakfasts aren't offered on every voyage, so it was fun to get the chance to experience one this time around!

The Disney Cruise Line Anyone Can Cook Culinary Series is another experience offered on longer sailings where guests can observe a live preparation of a recipe and then get a chance to taste it!

11.thumb.JPG.03a5dbfa3ea533aacd884a4a56a131a1.JPG

The format is really great for guests of all ages and the fact that you get to taste the finished product is icing on the cake... Plus the offering is free to all guests!

While you can meet Anna and Elsa on land, it is very rare that you get the chance to meet Kristoff, so it was fun to be able to do that here.

  • 2 weeks later...

After four amazing days at sea, it was nice to wake up to the sight of land. Sydney, Nova Scotia. Funny enough, we treated it more like another day at sea, with the benefit of getting off of the ship to get our land legs back, before getting back onboard to enjoy more of the ship.

The next day we went to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where a local friend took us on a tour of the city. Along the way we were treated to a few surprises and a beautiful city.

As before our days started and ended with some incredible entertainment and meals aboard the Disney Magic!

It is always interesting to look out your porthole or window when first waking up... You never know what you'll find.

I'm too easy.

Before stepping off of the ship in Sydney, we figured we'd take advantage of the Open House going on in the Oceaneer's Lab and Oceaneer's Club onboard.

Andy's Room is such a neat space for kids!

After four days, it was kind of nice to be able to get this view from land.

Why? Because why not.

The shore line of Sydney's port area features several statues dedicated to the many immigrants who arrived by these waters.

In the Cove Cafe onboard we were able to see the ship's voyage from Cobh to Sydney...

12.thumb.JPG.718f839930b992670a739e993978f152.JPG

It was a beautiful port day in Sydney...

When we returned to our room we found these light up necklaces waiting for us...

As it turns out, the day's theme was Frozen, with the evening culminating in the Freezing the Night deck party. During the day guests could participate in a free scavenger hunt that when completed would result in a surprise being delivered to the stateroom.

Thanks to the extended itinerary of our sailing, we were treated to a special Cast of the Disney Magic variety show where the Cast of the Walt Disney Theater shows would perform live takes on Disney tunes.

16.thumb.JPG.d26156ad601d37850007261cc1ab78f9.JPG

The talent we witnessed was incredible.

17.thumb.JPG.7b673277155d30921dcdc0d94c769ab6.JPG

And the performances were far from predictable.

18.thumb.JPG.bc7145f7c0b55cfd2061358c221ff28a.JPG

The whole experience was overwhelming and an absolute standout for the entire cruise.

Time for some Frozen shipboard fun!

Similar to the Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party (minus the fireworks), the evening's entertainment includes character appearances, dancing and a few surprises.

Olaf joined in for some Frozen fun!

The next morning we loaded up on breakfast (note the Strawberry Mickey Waffles), as we knew we were going to be getting a lot of walking in on this day.

Halifax, Nova Scotia. Welcome.

We met up with a good friend who lives in Halifax and were fortunate enough to have her touring us around the city...

35.thumb.JPG.f354cb84885b5134bfab67c1601d1965.JPG

Starting with the harbor, I was absolutely ecstatic to find that the famous Blue Nose II was parked here. I had thought she would be elsewhere during our visit to Halifax, and as a lifelong fan of O, Canada at Epcot, seeing the Blue Nose II was on my bucket list.

36.thumb.JPG.204649ab4b3fb5e6ea0fc70205dd6a02.JPG

Here I am swooning over a ship...

37.thumb.JPG.5a7225eb7df6bd7db30e15e0d079b888.JPG

But not just any ship...

Yes, I am here.

Canada's so proud of her, they put her image on a coin! Give her a look next time you find a Canadian dime in your change!

If you've not had authentic poutine before, Smoke's is a pretty amazing start.

42.thumb.JPG.b07cc549f1d05b7067f3fb35d0c79c36.JPG

We stopped for lunch and being that Halifax is a coastal city, I wasn't going to pass up the chance to tickle my seafood fancy ashore.

43.thumb.JPG.f6590fb454915bb98951489bb8d0f55b.JPG

We wrapped our time on land with a visit to the famous Public Gardens...

44.thumb.JPG.f351198df233c53df84a0fa5cc56bb66.JPG

There we saw quite the fat goose... But who is judging?

45.thumb.JPG.63598a19cfac92bfeea73437fd5e8492.JPG

A really neat space!

46.thumb.JPG.661548f9fe6908a9b834daa10eaaff4d.JPG

Also due to the extended nature of our sailing, we were treated to a live performance from Broadway-alum Michelle Mallardi who told us of her personal journey to stardom through song. Michelle previously played Belle in Broadway's Beauty and the Beast, among many other non-Disney roles.

Our next dinner in Rapunzel's Royal Table saw us celebrating Rapunzel's birthday...

49.thumb.JPG.c7a2b5b634d3d229bdecd6cea0a1b0f6.JPG

The Spinach, Zucchini, Eggplant, and Ricotta-filled Potato Crêpe baked in a Tomato Provençale Sauce and topped with Buffalo-Mozzarella Cheese and Basil was heavenly!

50.thumb.JPG.c32bc6cfbf21274d45a4684d9d900353.JPG

The Tangled Pasta was a favorite of mine on this cruise... I ended up special ordering it for a second night because it was so good!

51.thumb.JPG.7c9601cbcfb2ec4c1c3ea09696355dbf.JPG

Rapunzel’s Fry Pan Sweet Bread is about as delicious as it can get!

52.thumb.JPG.6347d6270f456900610a83cbd780bea0.JPG

Can't go wrong with Crème Brûlée Cheesecake.

When celebrating a birthday, you don't not get the Birthday Cupcake Sundae.
