Top/Favorite Hyper Coasters

2(15). Diamondback

The next few I don't know what people see in them

16(101). Nitro

I know everyone has a right to their own opinion and there are good days and bad days for each coaster, etc etc... but can you try to explain your thoughts on this one? I've ridden both enough to have a solid opinion, and while I can understand the side to preferring Diamondback (though I disagree), I don't see how you can say Nitro isn't even comparable.

18(103). Superman (SFNE) I used to love this ride, but this year is ran so horrible no airtime and the train was just vibrating non-stop you could hear in the queue line it was bad.

I think you caught the ride on a bad day. It was running as best as it has been since Bizarro and my rides were spread through spring, summer, and late October. Now the VR implementation was a disaster though.

I really hope this is true. I loved the ride when I first rode it in 2014 as Bizarro it was top 5-10 ride for me back in the day.

Nitro first half honestly for me just sucks. The drop is meh the airtime hills pre break run are bad as I've yet to actually get airtime on any of them, the hammerhead is fun but so is the turnaround on every B&M hyper. The bunny hops post break run are good, but not enough to make up for overly lackluster 1st half of the ride. I've ridden Nitro in 2014, 2015, and 2016 all 3 I've come off of Nitro saying to myself why am I wasting any of my time or energy riding this. Diamondback on the other hand provides the most sustained moments of floater on any B&M I've ridden. The first few hills are magical and post break run they're still really good. If Nitro had a quality 1st half it'd be a far superior, but that beginning is just horrible. Is there a particular seat(s) that Nitro is good in? I've ridden both corners of row 9 and a few other rows, but not row 1 yet. I've found that every B&M hyper/giga in better in the back row besides Golaith (SFOG) and the gigas.

^I prefer Nitro in the back (front is good too, middle is "meh"), but to each their own. Nitro's first half for me is all about sustained floating and a strong, borderline obnoxious helix--something you don't get on really any B&M's built after Nitro. The helix and bunny hops lift Nitro above Diamondback for me, which I actually found myself enjoying the middle rows more, with the very back almost as good and the front "meh."

Again though, opinions and tastes vary. I've ridden Nitro dozens of times over several years and found it consistently good and filled with airtime. Diamondback falls flat the second it hits the mid-course, and the airtime hills just don't sustain well in the back and aren't so much stronger than Nitro's to make up for that.

In a way I don't look that much forward to riding Nitro again since I don't want to ruin my good memories of it, but I really hope it's not as bad as you make it out to be. I personally found the middle seats really good and the front didn't have that much airtime but made up for it with the sense of speed. I don't remember if I rode in the back.

This might be considered off topic, but has anyone here ridden Kärnan @ Hansa Park and how would you compare Gerstlauer Hyper to Intamin or B&M?

The front is OK - I prefer it at night, but the back is my go-to, most notably the back far right side. You get the yank that you do in all 4 back seats but with added laterals on the first turned drop and the small turned drop before the helix.

I love Nitro and think it has outstanding floater airtime when its warmed up and running fast. I especially love it because its not particularly crazy/forceful and easy to re-ride.

If you enjoyed Nitro before then you'll probably still enjoy it. It's not like the ride has deteriorated over time (aside from the paint job), it's running as well now as it ever has.

Personally I think it's a perfectly middle of the road B&M hyper. It's a fun ride, it won't make any top 10 lists but I'm glad to have it in my home park, especially during Holiday in the Park.

If I'm being honest, I've ridden only four hyper coasters, three out of the four being amazing rides.

Skyrush and Phantom's Revenge are pure bliss. I don't know what I could say that wouldn't sound repetitive; everyone's already said how awesome both of these rides are. Pennsylvania is a lucky state.

Apollo's Chariot is the closest to me, and probably the one I've ridden the most. Thanks to this ride I love B&M pre-drops. While it's not the fastest or tallest, it was easy to re-ride and always had a short line each time I've gone to the park.

Intimidator wasn't 'bad', it just felt bland to me. I only got one real moment of airtime, and the second half had me worried we wouldn't return to the station.

This list is almost impossible for me to make, as hypers are definitely my favorite type of coaster. Inevitably the order changes, usually with the most recently ridden fairing better. Also, I feel that with all of my favorites, how I rank them relies just as much on the experiences I've had on the ride as it does the actual ride itself (if that makes sense.)

Diamondback

Goliath (SFOG)

Superman (SFNE)

Nitro

Apollo's Chariot

Skyrush

Intimidator

Magnum XL-200

Superman (SFA)

Phantom's Revenge

Steel Force

Steel Eel

Titan

Goliath (SFMM)

Hard for me to make the list, but here's what I came up with.

1. Expedition Ge Force - So much variety. So much airtime. It's as good as everyone claims

2. Superman (SFNE) - I heard this ride went downhill when it went back to being Superman, which makes me sad since I loved it as Bizarro. Lots of great airtime, and that twisty section at the end was great.

3. Phantom's Revenge - A ton of airtime, nice custom layout. Love the 2nd drop

* . Piraten - I know most people consider the Mega-Lites to be too small. But...they're not too much smaller than something like Steel Eel, which also fails the 200 ft mark. Didn't officially rank it, but this is where I'd put it. And besides, the Mega-Lites are amazing rides.

4. Goliath (SFOG) - Best B&M Hyper (Not counting Gigas cause then Fury 325 would be way up there). Downward Helix on Goliath > Upward Helix on Nitro.

5. Behemoth - Really good B&M Hyper

6. Nitro - Also a really good B&M Hyper

7. Magnum XL 200 - Love the ejector air on the bunny hops back. I don't care if its brutal and hurts.

8. Steel Eel - A small, but fun ride.

9. Intimidator - Whether the trims are on or off will really make a difference with this ride

10. Raging Bull - Love the first drop. Would be so much better without that trim on the 3rd hill.

11. Goliath (La Ronde) - Not the best, but it's a fun ride.

12. Silver Star - It may be my least favorite B&M Hyper, but I still enjoyed it. Plus, I'm at freaking Europa Park. Best park ever!

13. Desperado - Hey. I find it underrated. It's not nearly as rough as people make it out to be.

14. Titan (SFOT) - Twisty bits and helixes are fun, but airtime is really what hyper coasters are for.

15. Goliath (SFMM) - It's Titan, only missing a helix.

16. Steel Force - Sorry, but I just did not care for the Morgan Trio. Eh, at least it had some airtime.

17. Mamba - Another one of the Morgan Trio. It has some head choppers.

18. Wild Thing - The final addition of the Morgan Trio.

(Not trying to derail this thread) But. . . Wait... What??

1) Fury 325 - I know we call this a Giga...But I don't think B&M uses that term. When looking it up...They have it classified as a hyper. So yeah, this would be my number one easily. . .

Okay, maybe I am in the minority here. . . But no, Fury 325 is a Giga coaster. Regardless if B&M wants to classify it as one or not.

A giga coaster is a type of roller coaster with a height or drop over 300 feet (91 m) and completes a full circuit. The term was coined during a partnership between Cedar Point and Intamin on the construction of Millennium Force.

I agree that Fury 325 is a giga...But B&M still calls it a hyper. So, I just included it. Not sure why B&M calls it a hyper...But they built it, so I guess they can call it whatever they want.

This is a guess, but I'm thinking that Intamin might have the rights to the term "Giga Coaster..."

The problem being that I rode it when I was like 14 and it was one of my first coasters, and since it was the best experience I've ever had on a coaster back then I feel like my expectations will be way too high. But yeah, if I go in knowing that it may not be as fun as it was in 2013 (I think) I will probably still like it a lot. Thing to note is also that every new hyper I've ridden I've liked less than the previous one, so that could point to me not enjoying them as much, or it's just a coincidence. I hope so.

That's a very similar experience I had with Diamondback. Growing up in California, we didn't have a real airtime focused coaster until 2015, so when I finally travelled out of state in 2010, Diamondback was the first airtime coaster I rode - And it was magical for me. It brought my fandom to a whole other level!

I only revisited Kings Island this past summer, and in the past 6 years I've ridden a LOT more airtime coasters, so I was fully expecting Diamondback to be lamer than I remember - I was wrong! Diamondback was still a ton of fun and it's still in my top 15!

Of the ones I've ridden;

(Excluding Giga/Strata)

1) Skyrush

2) Apollo's Chariot

3) Steel Force (Probably because I've ridden it so much and can really appreciate it for what it is. A solid old school hyper with amazing floater)

4) Nitro

5) Phantoms Revenge

6) Alpengeist (Technically a hyper - Feel free to strike it from the list if you disagree)

7) Intrimidator {Carowinds}

In theory, I feel I'll greatly enjoy Magnum XL-200 when I make it out to Cedar Point this year. Titan/Goliath also look awesome, but I'm a huge fan strong positive forces.

I don't think so since I'm pretty sure Steel Dragon 2000 is considered a Giga Coaster and that's a Morgan coaster, not Intamin.

Well that kinda makes me more hopeful, and it's probably still gonna be in my top 5 (as you can maybe tell I've not ridden a lot of coasters, even if I've ridden some of the better ones).

Not trying to be rude, but does it really matter?

I've been on plenty of hypers, but I don't really like ranking coasters, so, I have only picked the clearest top-four:

1. Mako. Hands down the best airtime of the B&M's. The first half has strong, prolonged ejector down the drops, and the second half after the trim would totally kill you if the trim wasn't on. The MCBR is always off, which is great. The first turn following the MCBR gave a surprising and weird lateral force, unlike anything I have ever experienced (and seriously might be one of the greatest lateral transitions ever).

2. Nitro. Sentimental to me, with really good, strong floater airtime in the front (I never rode it in the back, so I can only imagine it has some form of consistent ejector). The first hill totally caught me by surprised when we begun to bank and there were no significant forces on my body, causing my torso to fall over the edge of the train (I was sitting on the inside of the turn).

3. Magnum XL-200. Self explainitory, but it ranks low because it has been a while since I have ridden it.

4. Goliath. It is a pretty good hyper that was my favorite after my first visit. I rode Nitro and El Toro before my second and third visits to SFOG, which I think spoiled my some. El Toro really has blurred the lines for me as to what is good airtime.

I completely agree with RollerManic's assessment of Mako. The first half of that ride is phenomenal, and when the trim brake is off the airtime on that ride is the best on any B&M ride. It is such a great coaster. Here's my list:

1. Fury 325. If B&M lists it as a hyper I will too! It's the best ride I've ever been on by a pretty sizeable margin.

2. Mako

3. Goliath at SFOG. Other than Fury 325 it has the best start-to-finish layout of any B&M.

4. Behemoth. This and Diamondback are really close, but the last bunny hill at the end pushes it slightly ahead.

5. Diamondback. Really good airtime in the first half, good floater in the second half. It's just an all-around fun coaster.

6. Leviathan. A tremendously fun coaster whose only fault is being too short in length.

7. Superman - the Ride at SFNE. It has the most complete layout of any hyper, but the uncomfortable restraints pull the ranking down.

8. Skyrush. The only coaster with truly thrilling airtime. The restraints are absolutely atrocious, however, and prevent a higher ranking.

9. Intimidator

10. Nitro

11. Superman - the Ride at Six Flags America

12. Apollo's Chariot

13. Steel Eel

14. Raging Bull

15. Phantom's Revenge

16. Titan

17. Goliath at SFMM

18. Steel Force

19. Mamba

20. Wild Thing

21. Manhattan Express

I wouldn't go into it with sky high expectations (especially when it's in the same park as El Toro) but it's pretty much impossible to ride Nitro and not have a great time. It's not going to make many top 10 lists but the ride is universally liked by basically everyone.

I dunno Nitro is easily a top 10 ride for me. I rank coasters based on how much I enjoy them, not on intensity (though my favorites might lead some to believe otherwise). Out of over 100 coasters now I still find Nitro to be more enjoyable than most. It's nothing earth shattering, and I can even see how people might be underwhelmed by it, but Nitro is just an all around fun ride to me and after as many laps as I've taken it hasn't gotten old.

^Same. For example, a lot of people knock on Millennium Force because it's "not enough" or whatever, but it has the kickass old Intamin trains, awesome drop (especially in the back), then you get to go 90mph through the course losing very little speed, plus it rides like an Intamin. I rank it in my top five and I don't think I've ever had a Cedar Point trip where I didn't ride it 15-20 times.

^Yea I noticed a lot of people do bash M-Force for some reason. Its the only giga coaster I been on so I guess I can't say much. I'm sure the newer gigas are more intense but that doesnt mean M-Force is a lame coaster. I really enjoyed M-Force. However do I admit I would like to try the other gigas as well still even then Im sure I'd still enjoy M-Force a lot.
