Comeagain?
Can the magnets ever be demagnetized by some force of nature? Not under normal circumstances. Heat can, but not at a temperature that they will be exposed to on a ride.
Henry M
The thing is, is that with S and S, is that if there's a cable snap, nothing will stop the ride, however on an Intamin, the magnetic brakes will stop the gondola. Thus Inatmin and other magnetic systems are better than pneumatic systems.

And those four large shock absorbers at the bottom. While I don't know the exact way the S&S towers work, I always thought those were to ensure that the car would come to a smooth stop at the end of the ride, not to stop a freefall drop. DoinItForTheFame
^ Maybe they are there for a little of both. Mainly to slow and smoothly lower the carriage down, but maybe to prevent the car from slamming into the ground in a worst case scenario.
