Photo Trip Report - Cedar Point Winter Chill Out 2016

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to share my experience at one of the coolest events around - pun intended - Winter Chill Out hosted by Cedar Point. A 6 hour long, off-season tour of the park! Weather was unseasonably warm (and welcome) with that familiar wind whipping off the lake.

This was our 3rd Chill Out and once again the park went above and beyond to provide an amazing, one of a kind experience for enthusiasts. Hats off to the Cedar Point staff that planned, coordinated and volunteered their time for this event. As every penny of the $40k raised went to Give Kids the World. Plus the delicious lunch and cool bag of merchandise was much appreciated.

My personal highlights were getting to see Valravn in person (of course) but I was surprised to see active construction going on! My brain is still getting used to Valravn jutting out into the midway - but I think I’ll adjust - especially when everything is complete. Touring the train house was AMAZING! The staff was so friendly and there were so many interesting things to see. Touring the mechanics shop is always a treat - and loved their sense of humor…. Going into the ball room was a huge surprise - I could not believe how gigantic it was up there! And of course Jason McClure and Tony Clark’s presentation was informative and funny. Being in the last group of the day I think they were a little loopy and were really loose and fun!

I’ll let my pictures show you all the cool / neat things that you don’t get to see every day. I’m not good at documenting every little detail - there are others here that do a much better job of that. I just gravitate towards things that grab my eye and try to make them look a little different / interesting...

Thanks for looking!

Waiting to check in at the Season Pass center so checked out Gatekeeper for a few.

As the sign says - Tour Start.

Raptor looked unbelievable - really striking - though we know the white caps will be back soon.

Hey, what's going on over here?

IMG_0176.thumb.jpg.252c9201508b2320e5ec698cdc292ec8.jpg

Oh yes - the worlds tallest spiral staircase and fresh looking Top Thrill Dragster.

IMG_0187.thumb.jpg.a71739c6409b76c438eeb98cdb1089c0.jpg

Couldn't of done this if I tried.

Peeking up through Cedar Downs to a couple of B&M's.

IMG_0199.thumb.jpg.e686889bd619857329e75333de0746a9.jpg

There's that Immelmann jutting out into the midway.

IMG_0210.thumb.jpg.30ad285ab1d30051b0b233b2043fd1b1.jpg

This area is going to be a-buzz with folks watching riders take that first drop.

IMG_0217.thumb.jpg.daaa1e2a8efdfc459689964fe93f91dc.jpg

So fresh and so clean.

IMG_0221-HDR-2.thumb.jpg.c77f0856bb4b58d8e3e0f2a4cfa55b1d.jpg

That Immelmann seems more of a signature to Valravn then the 90 degree first drop.

IMG_0234-HDR.thumb.jpg.639434d0052404bf57112feacd43fb13.jpg

More Immelmann.

Who wants to have to walk down the MCBR staircase? I do.

Another look at that first drop.

The train shop tour was definitely unique.

IMG_0283.thumb.jpg.6a478fa263d7f861255dbb2676e709b1.jpg

Just incredible machines to see up close.

IMG_0290.thumb.jpg.92a04e6ae0b9e4e1712fa33c0503a80e.jpg

I think this work shop has been here since 1870 - so many tools - old and new.

IMG_0293.thumb.jpg.1e48daebf5983503810a961b3e66a3a4.jpg

That's a lot of iron and steel.

IMG_0304.thumb.jpg.499aa40ba2ea8d546a18c3da9cd52a24.jpg

You can tell the price that Cedar Point takes in the care for their trains.

IMG_0309.thumb.jpg.5574f282726bec629338133c976714aa.jpg

Even the office was as you would expect.

IMG_0325.thumb.jpg.8188881cc0a20b70385da99d1ca6c079.jpg

They don't make them like this anymore.

IMG_0334.thumb.jpg.7ee2c7b87442ff90f0218ccfd12e9220.jpg

Now that's old school.

IMG_0337.thumb.jpg.6d855ae58f059746350489074c758f92.jpg

Trains and coasters - amusement park staples.

IMG_0341.thumb.jpg.1881b238a2c061f4c7fea71dea8800e2.jpg

Remain seated until the train comes to a complete and final stop.

IMG_0345.thumb.jpg.415d2bf9db1be9e47b557cd4a5c95661.jpg

I got a kick out of how they huddled and stored the trash cans throughout the park.

IMG_0347.thumb.jpg.9e93d624d8b6859406b6ec86a52d8612.jpg

This a view you'd only want in the off-season.

Guess those wheels are fully cured.

This seemed appropriate.

Maybe they can move the water cannons to Valravn to give everyone their splashdown.

IMG_0370.thumb.jpg.4b7825d67764ac5fdf6fbfc34cb622b1.jpg

Is this the future how of Rip Cord or something else?

I've been in that building exactly one time.

Rest up Maverick - it's going to be another long season.

IMG_0388.thumb.jpg.f11afaebb65d2212ab44d2c742ab14d9.jpg

Everyone was quite alarmed by the state of the off-season look of the swings.

IMG_0389.thumb.jpg.6727d519411e4c17bc39a9aa45ebcc65.jpg

Seems like a good place to park this.

Walking back to one of the mechanics shops.

IMG_0472.thumb.jpg.5d10b887e7b982d8feb39fafbe4e7204.jpg

I was surprised to see such a new vehicle - most are from the late 80's.

IMG_0473.thumb.jpg.a859baecb4bf8f62cb3787ee4798d97e.jpg

So that's where the Chick-fil-a mailbox went.

It is such a cool experience to be able to walk around parts of the shop.

IMG_0516.thumb.jpg.4745c503031145f68b54762243eb06c9.jpg

I needed bigger pockets...

They look so strange just sitting around off the track.

At least they didn't write Wash Me.

We got a history lesson on Hotel Breakers.

IMG_0577.thumb.jpg.b210aed239d82697d79af2560f93588d.jpg

It was a little creepy with just natural lighting in the lobby.

IMG_0581-HDR.thumb.jpg.55abec238cff934d2c52fb818a48f5df.jpg

Kinda had that Shining vibe going.

IMG_0605.thumb.jpg.78d02c98b4a77dc1cd7e54c5ee457197.jpg

The Giant Wheel lost some weight!

IMG_0614-HDR.thumb.jpg.4b7ae817c194a33405b365df926fa0fd.jpg

Now this was cool - though it was a old and creepy as you would expect.

IMG_0626-HDR.thumb.jpg.a30871b1dd022eeac04f728bb8ba0daf.jpg

My tour guide hated me - I was always the last to leave.

IMG_0635-HDR.thumb.jpg.f497be1f0b229a1a781a7d7b3387e61b.jpg

Taking a look out the other side.

It has charm and the ugliest paint I've ever seen.

IMG_0664-HDR.thumb.jpg.21155107848ecc517a569cd1ec226bf1.jpg

And that concludes our tour.

IMG_0681.thumb.jpg.1671e6e4feba8ca8e4cb9bb02cce089c.jpg

It was nice - so head over to Battery Park - just the moon light and misc lighting of the park.

IMG_0703.thumb.jpg.cd413640fdf9e5144b1849b88008ce3f.jpg

Here's a shot of the whole peninsula.

IMG_0706-HDR.thumb.jpg.4dfc0584772d68b4340598870e9b40cf.jpg

Went over in the AM too - though lots of gray skies this morning.

IMG_0716-HDR.thumb.jpg.6128970a334872598648e56e67608d30.jpg

It's a lot nicer in the summer time.

IMG_0742-HDR.thumb.jpg.a7cc0c755483883c7e9dbdd4f801ef1a.jpg

Bonus shot for the seagull fans.

The sun finally made it above the cloud cover.

Awesome photos as always...thank you for posting.

I really liked the bonus ballroom shots - it's in such better shape than I had ever imagined. I personally think that it would be a cool place to move the museum, wouldn't it?

Next year, I think that we are going to plan on doing this tour. I got my dates mixed up as I thought that it was next weekend which is when we'll be in Aruba. Bummed that we could have gone to this and didn't!

Chiming in to say that I as well pause at each of your shots. The angles and lighting you highlight are remarkable. Thanks for sharing!! Wish I could take pics half as good as you! Part of the problem is my lenses always get scratched, guess I'm just absent-minded like that. Do you do much photo editing once home?
