Playland's Castaway Cove Discussion Thread

You got some truly standout shots! Some of them wonderfully moody in that "feel" of photography popular in the 40's and 50's. That misty eastern shore and the eerie nighttime boardwalk certainly evokes nostalgia to anyone who's familiar with that part of the country. Thanks so much for sharing your art with us.

Awesome shots Andy! You make the Jersey shore look nice. I'll eventually have to hit the Jersey Shore the next time I'm in the NorthEast, especially since they are getting some more interesting rides.

Ocean City is the nicest of the Jersey shore towns that have amusement parks. Families tend to stay for a few days to a week. A little more exclusive than the other places.

Wildwood (Morey Piers) is next. Many families have been returning to Wildwood for generations, whether it be for week long trips or the whole summer. Definitely has the most retro vibe.

Seaside Heights (Casino Pier) is party central of the shore towns. The percentage of families that stay over night has dwindled significantly over the decades. More clubs/bars than the other towns. The town receives a lot of day trippers.

Point Pleasant (Jenkinson's) is pretty laid back. Mostly day trippers as families or people visiting from other nearby shore towns

Keansburg tends to draw a lower economic status crowd. The town has less accomodations than the other and is a bit run down.

These pictures almost made me want to go to Ocean City for the beach, but then I remembered the asinine beach badge policy so nevermind.

I'm not one of those "I'm not paying that out of principle" people but it'll be a cold day in hell before I ever pay to sit on the beach.

Cool, good to know the differences in the beach towns and piers.

I did an Ocean City to Ocean City trip last weekend (NJ to MD), and though I wasn't totally sure what to expect, I really liked both of them -- probably my two favorites of the several beaches I hit along the way. The atmosphere on that Friday night at Ocean City NJ was awesome. Definitely a low-key all-ages crowd, eating pizza and ice cream. Ocean City MD is far more built up and resort-ish, but still has its charm, and a great pier -- just 50 cents for spectators. Really liked Cape May also, though that's a very different clientele and feel. I did drive through the Wildwoods but didn't stop.

Oh, and the beach tags aren't in effect after Labor Day, so I was good there.

(Least favorite was Virginia Beach, in case anyone was wondering.)

Maybe it's just me, but every time I see that there's been a new post in this thread, I get my expectations unreasonably high that they've actually managed to open Gale Force.

I would agree with this based off my first visit there yesterday. Most of the storefronts in town seemed to be boarded up and it kind of felt a bit on the desolate side of things. The park was open, but about half the rides were closed, including the Looping Star coaster (probably for the best) and the Gravitron which was in the midst of rehab -- though you could walk right up/on to it if you wanted since they didn't really cordon it off.

Would definitely take another trip down to Wildwood or Ocean City any day of the week before I consider coming back to Keansburg to be completely honest.

One time we stopped at Keansburg on the way home from somewhere else. It was early this season, but the park was scheduled to be open. We tried to call the park to confirm that it was open, but nobody was on the phone. When we got there, the entire park was closed except for a few games and the bumper cars. None of the workers knew why everything was closed. (And by the way, that gravitron was in the same condition as it is now). Also there was a scheduled ACE event scheduled there a few months after my epic fail "visit," but for some reason the park bailed out a few weeks before, so it was cancelled. Someone should save their Chance chaos and tear that place down to make room for more strip clubs and gas stations for all I care. I'd take Lamemont or Conneaut Lame Park over Keansburg any day, let alone tons of really good boardwalk parks, one of which is the best park in the state! (Morey's)

This was (word-for word) our experience this year. We wanted to pop in and ride the coaster and Chaos (because when do you ever see a Chaos?) and leave but we ran into the same thing you described, complete with trying to call them during scheduled operating hours to make sure they were open since it's such a rinky-dink-sh*thole and not getting through.

Thanks, Larrygator, for listing the surfside towns on the Jersey Coast. I've been trying for ages to recall the name of the resort/amusement area my folks took my sisters and me to many, many years ago. And there it was on your list! Ocean City. It was just for the day and I recall we all had an awesome visit - the beach and the entire amusement scene made for a perfect day's outing.

(Funny story. I was about 17 and working that summer in the offices of a local university. I called in "sick" that morning so I could join the family. Being a typical teen, it didn't occur to me that when you're as pale as I am, you don't call in sick to your job and then show up the next day with a nice tan!! I was soooooo embarrassed to return to work looking healthier than ever...and trying hard to avoid the 'smiles' of my employers. Sheepish moments in life!)

We spent the day last week at Ocean City and had a nice time, but holy hell can we talk about how crazy Gale Force looks?? Definitely one of those rides that looks more intimidating in person. It's got a beyond-vertical drop -with no trims before it!! At least none that I saw, and I looked. Launch speeds aren't 100% consistent right? You get a good launch and I'm imagining that first hill could send you flying! I can't wait to ride it next year.

Also I spent time in an arcade for the first time in forever, and I know the answer is probably yes, but am I the only one who's disappointed the new shocker games don't actually electrocute you? I remember walking past the real deal on that board walk way back when I was a tiny kid and was always intrigued, but never saw anybody try it out.

I'm missing the humor, unless it is regarding the fact they did not proactively kept the public up to date all summer about the delays. Please clue me in.

I for one appreciate the fact that they are still trying to get the ride open in 2016. The weather in early November certainly won't deter people from riding if they ride Nitro in December.

I find the desperation to claim that this is a "new for 2016" ride by openly considering opening it for one day to an empty boardwalk in November/December to be just that: hilarious. Yeah, it is "better than nothing," but it also makes zero sense whatsoever to do. They completely botched their timeline for construction and this is their damage control.

I take it you've never been to the Jersey Shore in November? Nothing is open, no one is there. Regardless of how mild it might be. Yes we'll ride Nitro in the freezing cold, there is also six other coasters and an entire park open with it for us to enjoy as well.

Also I find it hysterical that in the same paragraph they are posting about the end of their season that they are still going to get that new coaster going... at some point...

I'd have no problem if they just came out and said "well, that's all folks. Sorry about the new rides, we'll see you in 2017!" But this, this is hilarious.

If it was a park on the Atlantic City boardwalk, I could see it drawing an ok crowd with more stores open year round and the casino visitors plus all the shows and concerts.

On the Ocean City boardwalk, other than the Christmas store that is close to the park and an arcade or two, I don't think much is open after this weekend. Maybe they think locals will visit?

I have never been to Ocean City in November but I've been to Seaside Park, Belmar and LBI and restaurants and bars are still open, at least the ones I visited were open. A website for Ocean City lists events every weekend in November, might these people also be potential customers for the three day weekend if the park opens.

I don't look at this as a desperation move or large money making endeavor, more like a customer appreciation gesture for those who have waited forever. Something to allow the park to redeem it self a little.

I guess I'm just looking at this from a different point of view than others.

Just about everything south of Atlantic City clears out by the end of October, I know some hotels in Wildwood will stay open weekends through November as there are events happening on weekends still, and maybe Ocean City is the same way. I don't know, last time I was there off season was a few years ago and the place was a complete ghost town. Also, it's a dry town so there are no bars, and aren't nearly as many hotels as Wildwood therefore homeowners tend to winterize their rentals at the end of this month.

I don't see it as a way to make money or anything but there is a time when one just has to accept defeat and say "next year". Maybe they'll get it up and running, but at this point it's just silly even trying. If they do I'll eat my foot but I just don't see it happening. Not being negative, as evidenced by this thread I want the thing to open as much as anyone. I just hate someone who makes promises they don't keep, and they've been doing that all season long. It's not customer appreciation when you continue to make empty promises to your customers.

Finally if they do open the park for a weekend in November who the hell are they going to get to staff it? Lol

Even if there's only 15-20 full timers, that's enough to staff a ride for one day. Probably the least of their problems.

Anyways, boldikus hit most of the major parts. I'd add to that one additional item: Wildwood has a convention center which winter events can take place in. Ocean City does not.

Good points. But remember this is Jersey so who knows if there is some crazy law about have to retest a new ride if it doesn't open within a specified numbers of days from the original testing cycle.

The park promised Gale Force would open, but we still don't know why they stated a month ago that they were still waiting for a part. Did something break after testing? Was the missing part for Wild Waves or Gale Force? None of us know the whole story.
