El Diablo Turns World Upside Down

Six Flags Great Adventure's 13th Coaster Opens

Jackson, NJ - May 14th, 2015 - Beginning today, riders will feel the heat of Six lags Great Adventure's 13th roller coaster when it previews to Season Pass holders and Members during an event presented by Kia Motors America. The world's largest theme park will open the devilish El Diablo to the general public on Saturday

"The Jersey devil inspired the theme for our newest attraction, and El Diablo delivers a scorching thrill or a variety of age groups," said park President John Fitzgerald. "Our guests told us they wanted a ride that would excite tweens and prepare then for the extreme thrills of coasters like El Toro and Kingda Ka, and El Diablo is the perfect fit."

The giant, fiery red, looping coaster is located in the Mexican-themed Plaza del Carnaval section of the park. It features riders sitting in "face-off" (face-to-face) seats rocketing forward and backward pendulum style until the train gains enough momentum to complete a full revolution seven stories in the air. The coaster then kicks into high gear, completing full revolutions until it stops momentarily with riders suspended upside down, and then reverses direction for even more thrills. Guests can experience six gravity-defying inversion before the train finally comes to a stop.

El Diablo riders must be at least 48 inches tall. El Diablo previews to Six Flags Season Pass holders ad Members May 14 and 15, and will celebrate its grand opening to the public May 16

On Thursday we had the opportunity to visit Six Flags Great Adventure for the El Diablo Media Day event. I will give a quick review of the new ride and then will let the pictures do most of the talking. Also included are some photos from around the park.

El Diablo may not be the biggest thrill ride, but it certainly fills a much needed role in the parks ride lineup. The ride itself and the surrounding area are incredibly well themed which provide a great first impression when walking into Plaza del Carnaval. I had never ridden a Super Loop so I didn't know what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. The ride is smooth, fast, and has some awesome hang-time. You also get really unique views of the parks skyline upside down. Altogether it makes for a very fun experience that you should not skip out on when you're at the park.

This guy is awesome. I've been seeing him at the park for many many years. The park hired him in the security department just so he can walk around and do magic tricks for people. He's fun to talk to and loves his "job."

There's nothing wrong with that. They obviously did a great job with the new addition.

It's funny how people complain their parks don't have enough flats, then they get a cool flat that the GP will like and then people complain it's not good enough. Their only fault is they're calling it a coaster. Get over it. Just be glad they got something this year anyway.

The one mistake Six Flags has made is that they've set an expectation that the parks will get something new and huge every year. They can't do that anymore. They're being more careful with their money.

Great photos! It looks like they did a great job with the ride and the media day. I've actually never ridden one of these so I can't wait to go check it out. And while I agree with you guys that red carpet events are sponsored by companies and what not how much do you want to bet that kia will remain there the entire season?

This is my one and only gripe with it. Otherwise I think its a great fit overall, and especially a great fit in their the Plaza Del Carnival section of the park. People wanted more flats and we got a decent, inverting flat, filling a void many people complained was there.

Thanks for the photos and report. At least (it seems) the park is really putting some oompf into the rollout and promotion of the ride, regardless of the whole 'coaster or not' debate. It looks great where it is, I really can't wait to see what it looks like at night.

And the fact that a Six Flags media day has sponsors should be a surprise to absolutely no one.

It is pretty funny that most of us gripe how the park has no flats, then they add one and everyone is griping it's not a coaster

With all the RMCs and 4th dimensions and cool new rides yeah, feels a bit lackluster this is "all" we got, and it's been so many years since getting an actually new coaster, but hey, tis a new ride and I'll want to try it when I go to the park!

Just hope it lasts!

This ride really brightens up the midway and I'm sure it'll be fun to ride. Too bad the mist probably won't work anymore in 2 or 3 days but even without it the sign and ride placement still look great.

Haha! Took the words right out of my mouth.

There are not many problems with the ride itself. The park manager actually stated it well, calling it a transition ride. In fact, as flat rides these things are not bad fits for the parks they are at. Where the problems arise is in how shamelessly they are marketed as roller coasters. When even the entry sign states that they are coasters, it seems like they are trying really hard to convince many people that they are roller coasters. Even on the Facebook threads of the parks, you can see many of the GP calling out the marketing and stating that it is not a roller coaster. Still, the addition itself is fine for the park, especially one lacking flat rides.

The mist was only for that day lol. They had some leftover effects from Fright Fest so they said "why not?". I do hope they use it more often, it looks really cool!

Who cares if they market the ride as a "coaster' or not?

Seriously, I fail to see how they choose to label or market a ride will impact anyone's day at the park AT ALL. If you are really THAT upset that they labeled the ride as a "coaster" and are going to get so bent out of shape over it that you need to make obnoxious comments all over the internet, then you need to seek therapy as quickly as possible, or find a new hobby.

Seriously, people STOP WITH THE COMPLAINING!!!!! The park built a new ride!!!! Is going and having fun really too much to ask!?!

I think that it's good seeing different types of flats being built. I hope to see some Zamperla Air Races installed like these Larson Loops are! I think it's a solid addition and great thing is, these loops don't take up a huge plot of land.

If people are taking it that seriously, I agree, that is ridiculous. However, I've found most people are taking SF's attempt at marketing in a more humorous way. Even Frontier City got in on the action!

I love the theming, so well done. . wish I could see a pic at night, I'll be it looks gorgeous.

did they do some subtle theming as well? (as in, the ride loops 9 times for the 9-circles of Hell?) :

Thank you. The Kia ads are already gone. They were just there for media day.

The fluffy, fluffy chickens are called Silkies and they're awesome!! My old roommates had three of them.

Nice pics.

Ahh interesting. They were definitely cool animals. Glad you liked the photos!

"UNK" = Unknown. The equipment probably picked up a locator signal of some type of utility or service but unable to determine what it is.

The ride theme looks great.

Thanks for the insight on the markings.

This ride should do eight cycles, to represent the fate of the eighth circle of Hell the marketing department of this ride is guilty of for the sin of fraud of marketing this as a roller coaster.

Then again, I am probably going to Hell as well, so it will be nice to hang out with the blasphemous marketing team while I am there.

But seriously, I hope that the other SF parks adopt the same level of theming as this one.
