I've got my friend coming along to visit both parks for the first time and my girl joining for Knott's for her first visit to a major park period, other than going to Disneyland when she was 5. What I am doing is staying at a hotel near SFMM on friday night, then driving to Knotts after the Night ERT. So one night at SFMM and two at Knotts. You might be able to get a good dead from the Extended Stay America in Stevenson Ranch, one exit south of SFMM on I-5: http://www.extendedstayamerica.com/hotels/ca/los-angeles/valencia.
