#BanSelfieSticks - Help Us Spread The Word!

Recommended Posts

It seems like a silly rule given how much cheaper DSLR's have gotten, not to mention the mirrorless cameras that now offer interchangeable lenses as well.

Also, banning bigger lenses at entertainment/concert venues make sense since you don't have much room around you and extending the lens out could easily bother the person in front of or next to you. Plus there is the whole added aspect of the the fact it's a unique live event where the team/press/artist are selling their professional photos.

Was going to post this in the SDC reviews, but...

On a very busy Saturday on March 21, (18K patrons in the park at 3p according to one park employee) we decided to finish our visit with one last ride on Outlaw Run. Much to our surprise, there was only a 5-10 minute wait, and after waiting for 30 minutes plus on plenty of occasions doing got day, and with 35 minutes to go before closing time, we figured we had just hit the lottery. My son and I estimated we had at least three more rides to get in on our favorite coaster before heading home. Waiting in the que next to the clocks, and with one train left to be loaded before we were set to ride, the train that had just left the station all of a sudden stops about 1/4 up on the lift hill.

Why? Dafuq?!

Some d-bag pulled out a dickstick with a GoPro attached to it while sitting in the very last row, causing the operators to stop the ride. (RRRRRRRRAAAAAAGE!!!!!!!)

Long story short, it took well over 20 minutes to get everything reset and operating, the park employees had to walk ALL of the riders back down the lift hill, (Something didn't reset correctly?) and then they had to run four empty trains before opening the ride back up.

The crowd waiting was livid, and when this guy gets back to the station, the entire place just lights into him with surprisingly loud booing, and the yelling of obscenities (for SDC, that is) that caused this jackmonkey to glow a bright red almost immediately. Being the gentleman that I am, I notice him wearing a huge NYY hoodie, so as any self respecting fan would do, I led the crowd in a spirited, "Yankees SUCK!!" chant as he made his walk of shame to gather his personal belongings previously left in the rider storage boxes.

We did all receive one last ride on Outlaw Run before they tossed us out of the park, but knowing we missed out on at least three more treks around the track... well, I hated the Yankees before this happened, so...

Driving back, we did see a car in line waiting to leave the parking lot with a large Yankees window decal on the back of the vehicle, so we all flipped that driver the double bird, and yelled incoherently as we passed him on the left. Whether it was the responsible party or not? Who really knows. Just made us feel better, I guess.

Here is the link for the Kentucky derby banning selfie sticks....

http://www.wxyz.com/news/national/kentucky-derby-bans-selfie-sticks

An official release from Churchill Downs states the sticks and drones have been added to the banned list. The need to do so "grew out an increase in the popularity of drones and concern for the safety of Derby and Oaks Day patrons, the horses competing in races those days, and participating horsemen and members of their respective staffs,” the statement said.

you do realize that you don't come off well in this story either, right?

two people acting like douchebags (him for pulling out the Selfie Stick, and you for leading an anti-Yankees chant), didn't help anything. . just made things more uncomfortable for everyone.

why not just be quiet and let the park employees handle it? hmmmm?

Wow. How incredibly mature. If your goal was to look as stupid as the person who was using the selfie stick, you succeeded.

I would expect more maturity coming from a 102 year old man.

The rules for photographing at Churchill Downs are almost identical to the rules Magic Mountain posted, and for good reasons. Having photographed at a similar horse racing track (Keeneland), I know that they're VERY strict about any photo equipment coming into their facilities because of how easily the horses are to spook, and because of this they're also strict on how professionals that are allowed to photograph there carry themselves when anywhere around the track and near the horses.

It's understandable there, but I too think the policies on lenses at Magic Mountain are a little too absurdly specific.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I've seen these pop up in Korean stores lately, its a "selfie lens" its a wide lens to put on your phone so you can fit in more of your group without the stick. Not the biggest fan but if it helps mean less sticks everywhere I will be happy.

Yeah I was embarrassed reading the story. Another lesson in 2 wrongs don't make a right

Hi! I'm fairly new to this forum and I'm just reading this thread for the first time and I couldn't agree more!

I know a lot of music festivals in the area where I live have already announced that selfiesticks are not allowed on the terrain, because they form a danger to the people around them and probably the artists on stage.

I think you could make the same case for amusement and theme parks. The selfiesticks are not only dangerous in large crowds, but the real danger is in using them on rides. I can't imagine what the damage will be when someone sneaks a selfiestick on a coaster or fast ride. Maybe this person loses, or hits and breaks the stick with a heavy phone or camera at the end of it, hitting someone else in the back, who will probably be hurt a lot more than the person who brought it with him on the ride. I mean, umbrellas are also not allowed on these rides. Selfie sticks are essentially the same size.

Besides the fact that it is annoying when someone blocks your view on shows etc. (for example at a show in a theme park or music festival). The main reason to ban the sticks from the parks is the safety of other people around you. What people do to themselves is their own concern.

^ohh, are the 19$ (199$) with or without the cameras? If it would be with the cameras, I woul buy it, remove the cameras and place it in our living room with some ropes on it, so our 3 cats can play with it! The cameras I can use for filming something from different angels at the same time!

Can someone please explain this to me...

She was too tired to ask the girl in the background if she could do a photo of her and this crazy rabbit. So she onec bought a selfie stick that she can take photos with her and more stuff in the background without asking someone to take a photo from her!!
