Schwarzillard
It's time for a (relatively small) trip report of Kings Dominion! We went on the evening of July 4th to ride a couple of rides and see the fireworks. The lines were actually relatively short for one of the major days of the year. I think it was due to the hurricane that was supposed to come but ended up blowing away from us. Basically, there we got three rides on two coasters, all at night: Intimidator 305 (1): one of the best night rides out there, I found it was even more intense than the day, but I did not get much of a blackout sensation this time. Grizzly (2): I LOVED Grizzly at night! Normally, it is a sub-par, poorly built coaster. But man does it come alive at night! You cannot see a thing. Anyway, there was a 45 minute line for i305 and a 5 minute wait and then a walk on for Grizzly. What a great experience with lines! Now it's time for the photos! *Sidenote- I added the pics of dominator from different days, so the sky may look different. Although we didn't ride it this time, I have ridden it before and it is one of the best floorless coasters out there. Dominator's beautiful loop. Now,it was time for my #1 steel coaster, Intimidator 305. The twists and turns from i305! What's that peeking over the horizon? Is it a great, world class coaster? No, it's just Anaconda. While we're distracted, it's Volcano! A top coaster in the park! It's one great ride! Back to Intimidator, or rather, its break run. Nerd shot! The water had to spray the wheels to cool it down. Seriously, this coaster is amazing! Intamin drop tower! Every major park SHOULD have one! Sorry for the blurriness. I am a big fan of KD getting revamped, it really improved the park. Ferris wheel! From Geauga Lake. I love these things! It's hard to tell, but it is one of those grass tunnels that sprays mist. Grizzly! Now with a non-existent line! This reminds me of the Beast, minus the dude on the left. Screamin' Eagles! I was very impressed with the light show! Dominator, stop photo bombing! Happy first 40th birthday, Kings Dominion! Time for fireworks!
CoasterFanatic_423
Yeah, the i305 night ride was intense! I was surprised about the Grizzly though, a walk-on on the busiest day of the year? PTC magic seat was so-so on Grizzly, still gives me a headache! The incredible thing about all this was, again, the lopsided wait times. You had probably a four hour wait on Volcano versus a forty five minute wait on i305, and zero wait on the Grizzly! Not that I'm complaining, however it would partially justify tearing it (the Grizzly) out in favor of a dark or flat ride in 2015. Doing so would also clear up room for a coaster in the old XLC station.
Schwarzillard
I agree with the wait times. And I could see a newly trademarked "rougarou" darkride coming to replace the old animal, grizzly.

CoasterFanatic_423
Is I305 the only coaster with a water spraying system? I believe so, yes. However, I would not be surprised if such rides as Top Thrill Dragster had a similar feature.

Rougarou is coming to KD, no doubt to replace the Grizzly. It quite possibly could be akin to the new dark ride at Canada's Wonderland.
Schwarzillard
I would imagine all Intamin strata's and giga's would use water sprayers to cool down the wheels. Edited July 6, 2014 by Schwarzillard
Schwarzillard
A Wonder mountain's guardian style ride would also give the park a coaster-style dark ride. It's a no-brainer! KD should, and will, get a WMG dark ride. It would also fill the gap left in the lineup by Grizzly. The only problem is that KD may be nostalgic with Grizzly, as they will be going through their 2nd 40th anniversary.

I find it hard to believe there will be any love lost whatsoever removing the Grizzly. A WMG is a coaster replacement that will leave room for 2016/17's coaster next door in the XLC station. Schwarzillard
Personally, if I were Cedar Fair, I would take down Shockwave and put a family-style dark ride -aka- centurion there. Rougarou just doesn't fit in with the rest of the candy apple grove thing. But rougarou is a strong possibility.
Dom497
Is I305 the only coaster with a water spraying system? BSC at Wonderland uses water to cool down the fins. I'm not sure if the other clones do the same. Personally, if I were Cedar Fair, I would take down Shockwave and put a family-style dark ride -aka- centurion there. The Centurion trademark has been suspended because another company already owns the trademark. So for 2015 at the least, Centurion is off the table as a name. FOF at Kings Island certainly does

But still, a dark WMG style ride could fill in the small footprint left by Shockwave, and it would get rid of a bad coaster.

Neither Rougarou nor Centurion would have anything to do with any of the themes (and Centurion might not ever be built) B. Even though the Shockwave is a piece of Togo crap, it's still a roller coaster, and going from 14 to 13 can damage the park's image as a local thrill capital, especially as Busch Gardens down the road moves up to 7 with Diavolo. Personally, I say eradicate the Grizzly, replace it with a WMG, add slides and general improvements in 2016, then in '17 add a big coaster at the Hypersonic location. Schwarzillard
That is an interesting proposition, but the Hypersonic was a pretty simple coaster. Unless they put in a strata, which is very unlikely, I find that space would be hard to work with.

Unless they put in a strata, which is very unlikely, I find that space would be hard to work with. A fit for that area (although my gut tells me not to rule strata out) would be a Wicked Twister clone, a fast, compact, launched inverted coaster. Either way, a WT or a strata would distinguish KD as the launch capital of the world.
CoasterFanatic_423
I can assure everyone of one thing: If KD doesn't get a coaster for the fifth year in a row, I will procure a megaphone and barf loudly during the announcement: HUH-BLEHHHH! If the drought continues for a sixth... WARNING VIDEO RATED PG-13 FOR ONE CURSE WORD: [youtu_be] [/youtu_be]
Schwarzillard
Haha! I never even thought of a Wicked Twister clone. Maybe they could even do a full circuit version.
