Adventureland Long Island removing their SDC Hurricane

Recommended Posts

According to Long Island.com, that's what's going to happen...

Adventureland, one of Long Island’s most popular amusement parks, announced today that it will be taking down its popular Hurricane Coaster at the end of the 2014 season.

Standing at 50 feet tall and reaching speeds of 35 mph, the Hurricane has been a favorite attraction at the park since it was first built in 1991. Two separate trains—one red, one yellow—can travel the 1430-foot steel track in about 50 seconds.

After the Hurricane makes its last run later this fall, the park will take approximately one month to dismantle the roller coaster before beginning construction on its successor. According to Adventureland, the new ride will be the tallest and fastest it has ever built. The new coaster will retain the Hurricane’s two-train setup, and will also add a new dimension to the ride as the yellow and green cars will be able to rotate, making it Long Island’s only spinning roller coaster.

Adventureland’s new coaster will take about two months to construct, but will be built in time to make its debut during the spring season. Children as small as 42” will be allowed to ride when the roller coaster opens.

A name has not yet been chosen for the new ride, however, Long Islanders can enter their suggestions through the Adventureland Coaster Naming Contest by clicking here. The winner of the contest will be given a 3-year season pass.

It's a shame....I really liked the Hurricane. It was a very short ride, but God was it intense.....I've said this many times before, Hurricane may have been an SDC, but it had the heart of a Schwarzkopf. This new spinning coaster might be fun though, I've never been on a spinning coaster that wasn't a wild mouse before, so if I go. It'll be a first for me.

I live about 15 minutes away and it's on my way to and from work during the school year. I'll be trying to get over to the park as often as possible once dismantling/construction begins!

Although I was hoping for a ride to show up with an inversion, this will be a great addition to the park!

As a Long Islander myself, I second that. I would have loved to have seen a smallish 2 or 3 inversion Eurofighter go in it's place.

Isn't the Tickler at Luna Park a spinning coaster on long island?

Long Island isn't the whole island. It's only Suffolk County and Nassau County, Coney is in Brooklyn so It's part of the five boroughs.

Got it, thanks. New coaster should be a fun family ride.

Bummer as their Hurricane was one of the better ones.

Yeah, I was bummed out too, but now that I think about it. This spinning coaster is a great edition for Adventureland. As much as I would like a compact coaster with inversions like a small Eurofighter or a smaller Anubis-The Ride type thing, It's ADVENTURELAND we're talking about, not Cedar freaking Point. It's a park for families, not really for thrill-seekers.

I agree, but there is not a single ride in that park right now that goes upside down... The frisbee is the most intense flat ride, and that they don't even run a very good program on. The park is definitely a family style par, and we are lucky to have had the hurricane for as long as we have, I just hope the next step for this park is something that turns you upside down in some way.

After checking their website to see what they have to offer I think an inversion ride would not fit into the park. If they have the space and financial resources they can up their ride package in addition to their existing rides and widening their audience. But thats a long term and IMO quite expensive affair - German park Tripsdrill did it but took them 10+ years to add a Gerstlauer Bobsled, major log flume, wooden coaster and finally a Gerstlauer Infinity.

They have had them in the past... The park is quite landlocked, so expansion is basically never going to happen, but taking something out and replacing it with something in the more thrilling category would definitely the mid to late teens that drag their feet around the park due to the massive amounts of kiddie rides they do have...

WOW, This Coaster was one of my firsts. I remember going to Adventureland as a little kid. Sad to see it go, but hopeful for the future. Like others have said, remember this is primarily a family park, and as such has a good beginner coaster. I don't think we'll be seeing any inversions here for a while.

Regardless, good to hear the park is performing some upgrades. While it may be small, it really is a cute little park.

Hope the trains get sold to another SDC Hurricane. The trains made the Hurricane ridable (As opposed to Santa Cruz/Western Playlands)

This. The ride wasn't just "ridable", it was actually really good. Probably the best "compact" steel roller coaster in the US.
