Longest SBNO / Shortest Opened Coasters

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this has been talked about before (I searched the forum with keywords but couldn't find anything), but it was something I was curious about.

Seeing the long construction Standing-But-Not-Operational time and incredibly short opening time (a few days apparently) of RingRacer, I was interested to know if this is the longest time that a ride has been SBNO to still open later, and also is this the shortest a coaster has ever been open?

I've heard of rides that have been SBNO for decades and never open too.

In general I'm just interested to discuss rides that have never opened, barely opened, opened after a very long time etc.

Ring Racer was open for about 4 days since 2013

Vertigorama has been SBNO since 1983

4 days is ridiculous anyway, but 1983?! That's a long time to be constructed and to never open. Is there a reason given?

Probably something to do with the internal strife of Argentina following the collapse of the Military Junta government after the Falklands War.

Interesting Giovanola/Intamin design though.

If I recall correctly, they never actually finished the ride and it's missing the electrical system.

I don't know if rides being relocated count, but Pandemonium operated at SFDK for only 4 seasons, and Windseeker at Knott's operated for about 1 season and stood SBNO for another season.

Having perused RCDB I did see quite a few rides which operated for a single season at a park before being moved elsewhere. Boomerang coasters in particular seem to move around a lot.

I find the SBNO ones extra fascinating as they just sit there, very much visible but untouchable, and it must be weird for them to open after so long.

One non-coaster example would be the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, whose facade existing for many many years before the accompanying ride was actually built.

That is a really long time. I wonder what the park's status is now.

"On 11/10/2003 the park closed for what their website is called maintenance reasons. The park was expected to reopen the following year, the reopening did not occur until February 3rd, 2007. At the time of the reopening, just kiddie rides were operating. More and more rides are expected to reopen as time goes on."

The hopkins looper Red Devil at Ghost Town in the Sky had been SBNO for about 6 years I believe. Then in 2009 they renamed it Cliffhanger and it may have operated briefly but is now again SBNO, and I think has been since 2009 or 2010.

^I don't know if Cliffhanger ever actually opened. Orphan Rocker in Australia is another that was built, but probably never had any riders (although there are conflicting reports about this).

Yes, Cliffhanger did open, however briefly, back in 2009. It's still standing but not operating - but I think that has more to with the park it sits in.

Vertigo at Walibi Belgium was an interesting example of coasters that were rarely open.

Clicky!

Of course, it didn't look that great...

This ride was just ugly, but man the ride itself was quite awesome! I was one of the 'lucky' people who rode it back then and I thought it was an incredible experience! But it was just so... ugly ... And, off course, the ride system was crap and after 3 years the whole track was already pretty rusty thanks to the use of wrong materials...

Ohh, I've been here!

Definitely a strange park though... I mean its literally built on top of a mountain! (The only way between the parking lot and the park itself is by either Funicular or by Ski Lift, its absolutely bizarre)

Red Devil was pretty insane though, you pull quite a few Gs after that loop, while hanging off of A MOUNTAIN... It's also worth noting that the park replace the original Hopkins cars with in-house cars that feature lap-bars instead of those neck-killing OTSR on typical Hopkins cars. Pretty much the only notable thing about the park, though the train ride gives amazing views of the Great Smoky Mountains..

Kinda sad that the park closed down after that mudslide though, it pretty much killed the rest of the tourism in the area too...

How about this? The infamous Intamin halfpipe on a building in Japan, SBNO since 2005.

http://rcdb.com/3383.htm

That's a classic.

I came back from Japan just two days ago, and while in Japan, I almost went to take pictures of that thing. Almost. As it is located on a rooftop, it's nearly impossible to get any good pictures of it, so I never bothered to try...

While we're on this SBNO topic, I actually managed to get the Thunder Dolphin credit this time. Only took four years and three trips to Japan to actually find it running.

I rarely buy onride photos, but I just had to buy one from Thunder Dolphin, as it's a kind of semi-rare credit thanks to long SBNO periods...
