I really like to check everyone's ballot to see how my favorites are liked/disliked by others. According to what I've seen I think SFNE's Bizarro will loose it's # 1 or 2 spot and fall a few spots down.

I am confused as to why Carolina Cyclone at Carowinds and Corkscrew at Cedar Point get grouped under a generic banner while Anaconda at Kings Dominion gets its own banner. They all 3 provide different experiences and I would definitely rank Carolina CYclone way higher than the other 2......

It should, and it pains me to say that. I used to rank that ride as my favorite coaster and had it ahead of a lot of coasters I now list ahead of it. It's a great coaster but it's a shadow of it's former self, and I think a lot of it's #1 votes are from people that rode it before the transformation. This coaster in the early 2000's was unbelievable.

 

Personally I don't even think it's the best coaster in the park anymore (and based on the best coasters by state thread I'm not alone). I like Goliath better.

I love Bizarro, but I do agree that it is a shadow of its former self. That being said, it still has a fantastic layout and plenty of personal reasons which I believe will keep it in my top 5 for years to come. I would like to see it make a comeback, but I doubt this will be the year.

It felt very odd having Pirates Hideaway on the ballot for some reason. It felt sort of like putting a backyard coaster on my list.

I haven't finished my list yet and maybe this deserves to be in the Cedar Point discussion and not here, but I will share anyway: I have Raptor and Mantis at the bottom because I've decided from experience that Cedar Point does not take care of their B&M's AT ALL. Coming from the perspective of somebody who lives near SFGAm, where all of our best rides are B&M's that do not show signs of aging at all, raptor and mantis were terrible. Mantis' breaks all over the place to reduce roughness only made it worse by creating odd laterals and head banging. And when I rode Raptor recently, it was running with 7 cars instead of 8, essentially killing the train's momentum and again, creating all sorts of miscalculated elements, like forceless bumpy helixes. I suppose they throw more money at the maintenance of their Intamin's because they are more complex and are aging well. But I've never met a set of B&M's so disappointing and rough I never imagined that it was possible for their coasters to be let go like that.

^ I rode raptor last summer and it was running perfectly but, for some reason, it didn't look like it got a lot of attention. Loose tires, filthy looking lift hill and the chain was looking horrible too, as if someone had just thrown a bucket of grease at it. The fact that it was awesome and completely smooth despite this reminds me of why I like B&M so much.

That's weird about the 7 car train, I'd never heard of that happening. Personally I think Raptor is amazing. I'm not one to speak on Mantis because I don't really like any standup coasters.

^^^I've been on Raptor last summer and I actually really liked it ! However it was the first time in my life I went on it and I did not rode it in its best days when it opened I guess (I wasn't even alive yet ), but my 3-4 rides on it last summer were really good. It's #9 on my ballot out of 46 entries.

Maybe it was a rare experience, which makes me feel better/look forward to ride it again. I'd always imagined Raptor being great and instead it was running like a Vekoma SLC. I rode in the second or third week of august, 2012. Perhaps it was getting some maintenance attention at the end of the summer rush/beginning of fall. But given that the park is only open 6 or 7 months a year I dont see why it (a b&m) would require attention. As for Mantis, Riddler's Revenge is leaps and bounds better and its essentially the same ride. Maybe it needs new trains?

^There are many factors which influence how smooth the ride is so I'm not sure if it is just a matter of trains (although it could be). You can even have two clones with completely different levels of smoothness/roughness with no evident reason.

I'm not trying to be a hater. Its great to have an accurate coaster poll but......even with idiot's guides, drag and drop ballots etc. etc. this poll can be summed up as "Wall of text hits you for 8000 damage...... you die". Mitch needs to team with a GUI designer and make a easier ballot for everyone. Seems like only about 500 people vote because they open it, start reading the wall of text and decide to not bother. It's an elitist coaster poll because of the low voter numbers, but way more accurate than Golden Ticket and others for sure. I did not bother filling one out last year. I filled them out this year but not while thinking it could be done easier with a proper user interface.

 

So go ahead and flame me. I'm not trying to be a butthole. I just think we can make a better looking Mitch Hawker poll.

 

Have you tried using the Excel ballot? I can almost guarantee that the Excel ballot is faster than any GUI program you could come up with. Yes, the old text file ballot was a pain in the butt, but there are TWO other options out there now and no longer anything to gripe about.

I have to be honest, the setting and park that a coaster is in DOES actually influence my vote. While maybe not by much, but if let's say I'm on the fence about a placement of a ride, the park that the ride sits it could very well be a deciding factor for me. And I think it's totally fair to rank accordingly. IMO, ranking should be based on your entire "experience" not just from the moment the train leaves the station to when it hits the brakes.

 

Fortunately for me, though, I think most of my top coasters are in parks that I do actually like!

 

I totally agree with Robb on this one that where a coaster is and the landscaping around it really affects my overall rating because it's the EXPERIENCE that counts. Like take Scream for example at Magic Mountain. It could be SO MUCH BETTER if it was maybe built on a hilly terrain with grass growing around it... Not a PARKING LOT for cryin' out loud!!!

^I haven't been on Scream but I can compare two floorless coasters I've been on (Bizarro and spanish superman) and while I think the second one is better as a coaster the landscaping and atmosphere of the first (which is not even something extraordinary) decreases the difference in terms of overall experience to the point where it almost doesn't exist. So, I too think that is part of the ride experience.

I'm pretty sure El Loco (from adventuredome) shouldn't be counted for the 2013 poll since it's a 2014 coaster. People also were saying that it will probably be categorized as it's own ride since it's a custom design as opposed to the other El Loco's when it's added to the poll.

I have about 54 operating steel credits, 45 of which were represented in my ballot. Small list I know but I think my top 10 is still decent so here it is:

 

10. Superman: Ultimate Flight- what can I say? I'm a sucker for the pretzel loop. That inversion on this ride is my favorite inversion so it carries it up this high.

 

9. Fahrenheit- part of the best trio there is in the Intamin trio, sometimes this coaster gets overshadowed by the other 2 members of the trio when I clearly think this coaster deserves to be a legitimate member of that trio. Intimidating lift with a very unique layout.

 

8. Incredible Hulk- nice story to the ride especially well represented on the launch (which is awesome) that goes into a nice barrell roll. Also nice view in the cobra roll and the ride doesn't really slow down too much.

 

7. Storm Runner- great launch coaster with bonus elements after.

 

6. Manta- love pretzel loops but unlike S: UF, it actually keeps up a nice pace the whole ride.

 

5. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit- this seems to be a love it or hate it ride but I personally love the experience the music on this ride gives you. Plus it has arguably the scariest lift out there and a nice not quite upside down loop that gives you a nice view of IOA.

 

4. Nitro- very comftorable restraints, great view of the woods, a master of floater airtime and just a nice setting overall really makes this a great ride experience.

 

3. Magnum XL 200- I think the surprise ejector airtime won me over on this coaster especially in the tunnels.

 

2. Maverick- probably the biggest out of control feeling I've had on a coaster. Don't let the size fool you, it'll make you skip more heartbeats than coasters triple its size (*cough* Mill Force *cough*)

 

1. Skyrush- insane ejector airtime. Sure the restraints aren't the most comftorable in the world but when you experience that airtime, trust me the restraints are justified.

 

Other notables:

 

El Toro- my favorite wooden coaster that I ranked #2 on my ballot.

 

Millennium Force- this coaster was ranked 18th on my ballot behind coasters like Gemini, Space Mountain, Expedition Everest and Great Nor Easter. Some may question that but to me, this coaster is very overrated. I don't hate the ride but I definitely don't think it deserves to be considered the best coaster in the world. It's just all speed and no airtime.
