Knott's Merry Farm--page 1

Disneyland Resort, Day 1--page 2

Disneyland Resort, Day 2, Part 1--page 3

Disneyland Resort, Day 2, Part 2--page 4

I just got back from my usual Christmas trip to visit the family in California this morning--who wants to see pictures of Christmas in Sacramento?

Anyone?

Well, I did spend a few days in southern California, too, at Knott's and Disney. Maybe that's more your speed.

First off, let's talk Knott's. This park, after wandering about in a "thrill-park" haze for a few years, is getting back to what it does best--that is, being a nice, enjoyable family park. And while, yes, it isn't back to its "glory days" of the 1960s and 1970s, much of the old Knott's charm seems to be coming back.

A few random thoughts:

I like what they've done with the log ride. The new show scenes, while not state of the art, make the ride seem much "fresher" than it did a few years ago. But it seems to me that they've amped up the "wetness" a bit too (the old log ride just gave you a little spray). Diabetic Dan and I actually got a bit soaked, and I took a shot of water in my eye on the indoor drop! That being said, this is still my favorite flume ride anywhere.

RIP Perilous Plunge. I always thought you were a bit of an eyesore, and I think replacing you with a wild mouse (new credit--yay!), a scrambler, and a set of flying scooters was a good move. The boardwalk area looks much brighter and vibrant now, although I still miss the old Roaring 20s Airfield that used to be there. Now if they would just replace the Boomerang with something good . . .

The park's Christmas decorations were very nice, particularly in Ghost Town. The Christmas lights in Camp Snoopy were OK, but not particularly spectacular. They even added a bit of a "Christmas show" to the old train ride, which can be either a good or a bad thing depending on your mood.

Yes, it was a very pleasant afternoon and evening at Knott's, which we topped off with dinner at the fried-chicken restaurant. I just love those fluffy Knott's Berry Farm biscuits.

Join us now, won't you?

Diabetic Dan picked me up at the Clarion in Anaheim--a hotel where the 1970s survived. (This is true of many of the hotels in Anaheim.)

02.jpg.336a771b05464d3fb00a8d5530cad7ac.jpg

Time for a very Knott's Merry Farm Christmas!

03.thumb.jpg.b822778fd24dd137ce49227481a9e6ff.jpg

Montezooma's Revenge may be old, but it still packs a punch--my brothers and I always loved this ride.

04.jpg.52b36b482be6dcc8298e4eb9e66e9e98.jpg

Even the train is all decked out for the holidays.

05.jpg.5e82d299e7ff1244376f4b3a273b39e6.jpg

Xcelerator doesn't have any holiday decorations. It celebrates by kicking your butt!

06.jpg.f27596a3021b17e6e4a6639a7b677cd7.jpg

Wait! Who is that lurking behind the woman? Could it possibly be . . . him?

07.jpg.ee1c0efad307417c61d18d2cadf17d89.jpg

I thought he existed only in legend and myth.

08.jpg.85bab2d7556b4a0d862be7c0733eac3d.jpg

Yes, Virginia, there is a Mantis Man! (They let him out of the home to go "single rider" on Xcelerator.)

09.jpg.67cde3c7fb767568f8c605ecabaecba0.jpg

Well, if you have to be obsessed with rides, there are worse ones out there. Xcelerator is still great.

10.jpg.9786cd9d3998ee23049c2fc2257058de.jpg

Ka-ching!

11.jpg.0addbde6ba98694ca2fab62d7b089711.jpg

Dan offered to hold my camera while I rode Boomerang, which was very generous of him. Fortunately, I already had the credit. Nice new paint job, though.

12.jpg.e85c1a69467f3fe42e4973d13739647f.jpg

The Timber Mountain Log Ride looks much better now than it did a few years ago.

13.jpg.9f1164a977da5d9e20cd4e9cf3eba1da.jpg

And even though it gets you a bit wetter now, Dan still classifies the level of wetness as "acceptable."

14.jpg.a8d19cbe576f620522a7547898eb64bd.jpg

The Calico Mine Train will be going down for a much-needed refurb next year.

"Would it be possible for me to be refurbed into something other than a stereotypical Chinese miner? Thank you."

16.jpg.bab5471807a01a780492fa8641a225cf.jpg

The big "fire in the hole" finale really needs some work, and I'm hoping it'll become great again later in 2014.

17.jpg.6df526344a90b00ed1e4344b13b4d09a.jpg

Time to get all Christmasy and stuff.

18.jpg.f7056160030b5f935a9eb8ea39cf0a30.jpg

You can still see a little log-ride wetness on Dan as he sips his glass of chocolate porter (it had a licorice aftertaste that I sort of liked).

19.jpg.0d9323c6be4dde319bf81727f6f7d12a.jpg

Let's see, beer, goodies, . . .

20.jpg.095c08f865327113f384815bd92fe213.jpg

. . . reindeer--but something seems missing. Wonder what it could be?

21.jpg.5c593873024b78ee459f403a8fdc17f5.jpg

Oh, Santa, of course.

22.jpg.98a6db14f56a5dfdcd9ec4996505297e.jpg

Elvira is not in the Christmas Cabin, but nearby in the Haunt Museum.

23.jpg.6779ccafa10320881d02c66f2cd150fd.jpg

"Hurr, hurr, hurr!"

24.jpg.f002822d03e238516ec87a1c1e368433.jpg

Durn! Wished I'd seen these adorable plush clowns before I sent out my Secret Santa gift.

25.thumb.jpg.e8bf104b5a589b41eb500770cb1016f4.jpg

"Dave, Icebat--yo."

I think Catawumpus needs a nice elf hat and mug of holiday grog.

27.jpg.826913e85a57691b1efd7726d3fd813c.jpg

Well, it's here. May as well ride it. (I don't hate Silver Bullet, but it's never done much for me.)

28.jpg.2c829690deb10c7d8666dda37ae6d90c.jpg

Hmm--I hope that wreath is fireproof.

29.jpg.73a6fe5ffe7a65c19861445942747025.jpg

This feller on the train was looking for his girlfriend. Her name is Sugartits McGraw, or something like that. Or maybe that was his name. I was feeling a bit jet lagged at the time.

30.jpg.e2c98c951b30049e0a3d20b52473548f.jpg

I wonder if Mantis Man is still delivering Christmas joy on Xcelerator? More to come.

Great tour of Knotts, Chuck.

And damn, I really want to get out to one of these parks

that does holiday decorations and lights....and is open!

Knotts certainly looks good to me. Did you try any festive foods

there, that weren't Mrs.Knotts Chicken?

Great stuff Chuck! I like to see trip reports of Knott's during the Christmas time…brings back many memories! No Ghostrider pictures!!!! You should be ashamed…it's only the BEST ride at the park! Nice to hear that Coast Rider wasn't suffering the over-braked curse that most mouse coasters suffer after a couple months of operation!

That's almost as cool as sitting next to Elvis. Then again, maybe Mantis Man is Elvis. Or maybe I've watched Bubba Ho-Tep one time too many.

No! Sitting next to him is not cool. He sat next to me one time before I knew who he was, and he freaked me out. He does this weird mumbling kinda countdown before the launch. He then gets pissed if he misses it. I actually think the ride ops watch for him and then mess up his count on purpose. I know if I were a ride op on Xcelerator I would.

I witnessed Mantis Man's famous "count." He blew it.

OK, is everybody ready for a slew of Disneyland/Disney California Adventure photos? I hope so. But first, a few random thoughts.

DCA is, indeed, much improved over its original incarnation; well, at least half of it is better. Disney's work on Cars Land is excellent, and Radiator Springs Racers is a lot of fun. Buena Vista Street is also a big improvement over the old old "hub cap" fountain that used to be the park's "Main Street." The Little Mermaid ride is good, too, although I agree with many others that it's a build up in search of a climax (really, the ride just sort of "ends"). The park is closer to feeling "complete" now, and can probably coast on the afterburners of Cars Land for a few more years, at least.

Small World Holiday is a helluva lot better than the regular version of this attraction. Sure, it's full of singing and dancing dolls, but at least they're singing different songs this time around. The added Christmas decorations are great, and I really enjoyed it--a nice surprise.

Jingle Cruise wasn't as bad as I'd feared, even though it isn't, well, much. The decorations in the station are nice, and there are some nice touches in the jungle (particularly in the safari campsite). I also had a pretty good skipper, who added just the right note of sarcasm to her jokes: "Be sure to buy our Christmas CD as you exit. It's full of holiday classics, such as 'It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Typhoid.'" No great shakes, but OK.

This trip marked the first time I've ridden the "Nightmare Before Christmas" since the first year they did it--and it was even better than I'd remembered.

Whoever designed those new trains for the Matterhorn deserves a public flogging. God, they're uncomfortable, as well as painful. I was left with a pretty sore back after the ride.

Care to join me? Yes, it's a bit damp today, but even a rainly day at Disney is better than a day at the office.

01.jpg.f14bfe8e01871fbde6228f740a533d87.jpg

Let's start at Disney Hollywood Studios . . . er, California Adventure.

02.jpg.80c99c891b28503818bad1617ca7e6d8.jpg

Yes, Buena Vista Street does look better than the big hubcap fountain, even though it was a very nice hubcap.

03.thumb.jpg.36d8bfbc00606de4049a504ffa66db94.jpg

DCA's "official" Christmas tree.

04.jpg.32b4ce4c4b31db1f294aaccff2f0d9a1.jpg

The Red Car does add some nice atmosphere, even though I never got around to riding it.

05.jpg.fe14dae3cb15ab9ee585d7338941bb68.jpg

Well, better get a Racers' Fast Pass . . . holy crap! That's the line?

06.jpg.6b8c1f6c0dada21d33000b47ab2c706e.jpg

Well, once 9:00 am hit and the rope dropped, the line moved very well. I even got a decent return time.

07.jpg.500a2504b3ec42ccea81d0e0404280ef.jpg

So, what about this Cars Land, anyway? Maybe they moved DCA's old entrance hub cap here.

08.jpg.390df754ec416bc1c2f39d384c150441.jpg

What? No Kiwanis?

09.jpg.a92a9d0d23fe7514d8ff41df6e004409.jpg

I do like this old-time "Route 66" atmosphere.

10.jpg.f2c30552c0c476e8c75b3a544f8c7d8a.jpg

While I'm not a big fan of the Cars flicks (the first was OK, the second one was just bad), I was impressed with how great they looked. And Cars Land lives up to that.

11.jpg.db0f6b9b033ee4fe08ea1928666996a0.jpg

Racers just opened. May as well get in at least two rides today. The wait was about 20-25 minutes (it was an hour plus later, despite the rain).

12.thumb.jpg.d8e039f1f1877040c9de120ca7399005.jpg

Hmm--a building with bottles in the wall . . .

13.jpg.9ad6c908aa27f56033490d0064e65c90.jpg

. . . wonder where they came up with this idea? ;)

14.jpg.3231ddf9f551fc5a221a193d8039c50d.jpg

I seem to remember another local theme park with a similar building, which they re-created from a building in a desert ghost town. The name is right on the tip of my tongue.

15.jpg.510a3c497803f95972eca7bcc1dd9d21.jpg

As I said before, I'm really impressed with all the work that went into Cars Land and racers.

16.thumb.jpg.21e2c97a6bd51a8f01725b59f42a60ba.jpg

Meanwhile, back at the Magic Kingdom . . .

17.jpg.66825d72e2e5da9ed88e57d983857f75.jpg

Hmm--there's a castle back there somewhere, but I can't quite make it out.

18.jpg.7ffd967d592837873a8b6b249faed8e6.jpg

Oh, there it is. It's cute.

19.jpg.aee64a6d1f955fa2b42402342bb09be4.jpg

Hell, being as it's 10:00 am and I have a Racers' Fast Pass for 10:35-11:35, I may as well queue up.

20.jpg.f26a0a30f64bf289ecbaacbb481a9ba9.jpg

Good morning, slightly soggy Space Mountain. The people in line all smell like wet dog fur.

21.jpg.e64f9af1b50ca7a1db5beb3ef4dca35b.jpg

Holy crap, they've locked on their photon torpedoes! This line better get moving now!

22.jpg.cf2aa3d0c4c7bf6390c0c32581d1dfb7.jpg

What's this? The Nightmare Before Christmas line is only five minutes?

23.jpg.bce2f20a7528aaa159d771283cdb65af.jpg

Excellent! I've really been looking forward to this.

Sheesh! Glad I rode that when I did. Look at the line now. More to come.

I got to Disneyland only once during it's Christmas season. And I wish Nightmare had been installed in Mansion back then. The movie had already been out, but the overlay didn't happen till I had been there. Still, I got to see the version in Tokyo Disneyland (2007 TPR Tour) and it was very cool - if not easy to understand.

Great TR Chuck! Looking forward to more (but never "the same").

(and EDIT to add: And DCA was still a parking lot, 1996)

55.jpg.0e81dee46f2858d4e1934446f93b95fa.jpg

"You lose this race and I WILL KILL YOU! Otherwise, no pressure."

56.jpg.57afaef2ef40c1423fd3b745507bd553.jpg

At the starting line . . .

57.jpg.1c47bfc50965aae5ceae6ece6da98c3c.jpg

In the words of Clark Griswold, "Burn dust and eat my rubber!"

58.jpg.73508c09987d45fcbd7f8ec1747819f2.jpg

Although Epcot's Test Track is a bit more exciting, Racers does have a beautiful setting.

59.jpg.232e7d4b3d1b9aa6a09c38ea244857e1.jpg

And we won! Beer is on Mater!

60.jpg.f8c26a87bc446378215855b9271cdf65.jpg

OK, just how many races are they running today?

61.jpg.167391df0c66b39e719ea2a22ffdfb50.jpg

Very nice work, Disney--you really seem to be back to your "A" game.

62.jpg.c2c48de4c3012749207704cf72fee9d4.jpg

Racing sure makes a guy hungry.

63.jpg.f1914a61febf46b558dc02eaaf53bba1.jpg

The roast beef with mashed potatoes and roasted corn was pretty good.

64.thumb.jpg.c3173f521aa5c1a1a9a93563dbeed02b.jpg

Flo has a nice Christmas tree . . .

65.jpg.395b522ebaa103d90e076a6d83015ed9.jpg

. . . and a good view of the races.

66.jpg.023b32041cfe1a86f187894d10030ecd.jpg

Remember--Mind Your Speed!

67.jpg.5055cda90f52486fc03cd72b34866ca6.jpg

I'm glad there's a clear path from Cars Land to the Tower of Terror now.

68.thumb.jpg.21e45d7f8552bc409cdc2243403c8757.jpg

This shot might make you think you're in Florida . . .

69.jpg.04d4a4a95dc42638b2e0b00a851d0535.jpg

. . . then you see the cartoon boiler. Well, it's still a great ride.

71.jpg.1742f75be0131f69f7d97f183113d604.jpg

I live on the East Coast, yet my first Little Mermaid ride is on the West Coast. What you might call "ironic."

72.jpg.e51eb6bc1a76b984839845ddd21095db.jpg

"Well, as it turns out, Ursula had some video of old King Triton having, er, 'relations' with a giant squid, and that made Ariel really mad . . . oh, wait, that's the unauthorized porn version."

73.jpg.192f6fa3c4257eb78a810e7df27387d7.jpg

Dive, dive, dive!

74.jpg.e9de8bfc7bdf9d3afead4a6ec3a8d10a.jpg

Ariel, you closed your eyes. We'll have to take it again.

75.jpg.a87dbf4f4560f0fd648ded16009be56b.jpg

This section was designed by someone who was into crabs and ganja.

76.jpg.4fe7e55593ad712d817369ca35e8b02a.jpg

Conga line for the ganja, mon!

77.thumb.jpg.d3e52a9a50de0a8064214775ec5e8f1f.jpg

Wait! What's wrong with her hair? And is she twerking? I'm going to post some very nasty comments online and at guest relations!

78.jpg.d353ee48b7d6d7815c6b68dda55bfb4f.jpg

The Ursula animatronic is very well done.

79.jpg.dffa830c53dcd591693a548c681a42a4.jpg

Sure she's got legs, but does she know how to use them?

80.jpg.adb0a5ccc35162c77acc68c449441be6.jpg

"Aghh! My evil plans have been foiled, and I don't even know how!"

81.jpg.107fba75189bfe487eb7876f7441b974.jpg

Yeah, it's the old Snow White's Scary Adventures "WTF" ending.

82.jpg.ed0d298206fa76b582550f680b929c60.jpg

I wandered down to Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen to make reservations for dinner, and it started to pour rain again. So, I waited out the storm at Trader Sam's over at the Disneyland Hotel.

83.thumb.jpg.811d3d8f413d35d63bd1a0c67ca2453e.jpg

Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Rum, anyone?

84.jpg.ca1b9903dfc629ba987b982ef7e91c6c.jpg

I had dinner at the Jazz Kitchen with Jeff Johnson that night, and lunch at Trader Sam's the next day with Eric Johnson. More to come.

And it just gets merrier and merrier!

85.jpg.d1cf64cd5743125326d067c05ffff425.jpg

It's still a bit damp, so I may as well ride the Monorail to Disneyland to experience the Christmas version of Pirates of the Caribbean.

86.jpg.a01a8dba95957ab4531839fe7682dca0.jpg

"Arr! A Merry Christmas, sez I. Now stand and deliver, dogs!"

93.jpg.986e6b8804a49ffca7066177dd3e5e5c.jpg

OK, I lied. There is no special Christmas edition of Pirates.

95.jpg.84e77d9aa87ca03826c2b9a229f2a7c8.jpg

But aren't the New Orleans Square decorations nice?

Time to do something you can no longer do in Florida, for what that's worth.

97.jpg.c01d3442adbf05b5cf34f4593bc53c13.jpg

Hmm--looks like a nice holiday dessert recipe.

98.jpg.8c1bcb33eca571e10f9e4396e4a66ff5.jpg

Phew! That is a relief.

99.jpg.4bff1339a096f6fd6d6a4fa13322bbe8.jpg

One more batch tonight--maybe a few more tomorrow.

Merry Christmas, cute little castle.

Hmm--looks a mite busy down on Main Street.

There is no Christmas edition of Buzz Lightyear. But Emperor Zurg is a sucker for egg nog.

The Disneyland tree all lit up--it's been drinking.

1199912253_135-Copy.jpg.177f772f90fa373285d3749315bd8a5b.jpg

How about DCA when it's all lit up?

874676530_136-Copy.thumb.jpg.502b80e901c383760c091115ec24119d.jpg

Very nice.

How many of you got a "Water Whiz" for Christmas?

Cars Land looks even better after dark.

613626026_140-Copy.jpg.c6f722e9423a9aed81bd0eb3d6887aea.jpg

The Cozy Cone looks even cozier.

The front office is closed, but they do have a nice Christmas display.

1928616670_144-Copy.jpg.076dd34ad9d62f024065ae2fc24827b9.jpg

Races continue on well into the night.

1458547517_145-Copy.jpg.b5ad5ff8942d56a6b255f786f219bb16.jpg

Guess I'll take the short cut to . . .

1288737590_146-Copy.jpg.5ce684b71cf7745508ec520f8cdb2f9d.jpg

. . . Pacific Wharf. This is another area that hasn't changed much, although there is a Ghirardelli ice-cream-and-candy shop where the tortilla factory used to be.

Here are the two rides I rode next.

150.jpg.08492e0fee37dd0e4880d7e24100224a.jpg

California Screamin' was running so well, it deserves a second look.

151.jpg.c4ba9fe06101fe7886ac6ef379b660c9.jpg

152.thumb.jpg.846acf57d66ec9310ac608001ba7ae18.jpg

"A Very Brother Bear Christmas" was a Disney TV special that didn't draw a lot of viewers.

153.jpg.c8e2e99acdef7c89b360b637f6ff148b.jpg

Hmm--still have some time to kill before dinner . . .

154.jpg.6b8348952d39356b3fea0d7b04281475.jpg

. . . so I may as well check out the special Christmas edition of Monsters Inc.--this is all it is, actually.

155.jpg.7f47a54433977c038ca486781e0d8062.jpg

After dinner, Jeff and I took the Monorail back into Disneyland to see the Small World projections . . .

156.jpg.e335c18033ce194255f2c97370685e59.jpg

. . . and the fireworks that closed Toontown.

157.jpg.9fb3f212763bb8df1ccc5b61769de221.jpg

Yeah, after watching them from near Small World, I can understand why they close Toontown and most of Fantasyland.

158.jpg.9e2a9f56ac34514810164083e3aaaee7.jpg

Small World looks great during the holidays.

159.jpg.099cc00a64943fba6768500f4084525c.jpg

The castle is all lit up now, too.

160.jpg.7e3b2770a77d7d6ca36314376e2014dc.jpg

It's been a great day, but I'm beat.

161.jpg.b13f27fc068049104c21937cb1d7f4c1.jpg

But first, an extreme close up of the Main Street Christmas Tree.

162.jpg.a5f2a55713a38b212c63bb82e6dc0070.jpg

Back to the Clairon. I'll post some day-two stuff later.

Wait! A Compliance Sign? When did "Snow White" get this posted?

And is this (of course, the children...) the only attraction with such a sign?

Important questions, Chuck.

Great trip report - Christmas is an awesome time of year to visit Disneyland, and Cars Land is pretty spectacular in itself. The Nightmare Before Christmas overlay might be even better than the regular Haunted Mansion!
