The Knott's Berry Farm (KBF) Discussion Thread

P. 651: Montezooma's Revenge project terminated?

Recommended Posts

On a Knotts fan page on a Facebook, there's an alarming number of people who seem to believe Xcelarator is on it's way out. While I typically don't pay any attention to GP rumors like this, the number of people who claim to have heard this rumor makes me wonder where the heck they got that idea from? Any guesses?

Looks like Knott's is being inspired by LEGOLAND just a bit. The boardwalk, similar coaster. Now, an interactive dark ride. Not on the same level as TSMM, etc., of course. I think this is fantastic as LEGOLAND is a great example of how to do a family park without Disney/Universal budgets.

I thought they aimed really low on the creativity scale with the attraction choices for the boardwalk and camp snoopy, so I am glad they are doing an ambitious new attraction for the park. I can't even remember the last time they built a new attraction that was considered even being close to cutting edge that is still operating, maybe Xcelarator in 2002? This is a great direction for the park to be heading in going forward. I am hoping they do a bit of remodeling of the entire area around the theater and Iron Reef, especially the quick service food area. Great potential there.

I am just happy that the giant octopus or whatever it is found work again after Disneyland kicked him out of the subs attraction for animated fish.

I would imagine that any coaster section on this short of track would be kind of a joke. I would prefer that they skipped it so that they didn't need lap bar or loose article checks.

There are a lot of good drugs in southern California, this could easily explain some of it.

Probably because it shows the giant octopus destroying Xcelerator in the dark ride's concept art. sigh... Gullible GP .

People took that literally?

There were others on the Knotts FB page that were saying the ride will be built under the boardwalk, because its an "under water" ride. People are just stupid!

There's no battle. Knott's is aiming to be a quality family option that is much cheaper than Disney and Universal.

This is exactly what Knott's is doing and it seems to be working pretty well (the park had its most successful year ever in 2013). Knott's has positioned themselves as a value alternative to Disney that the entire family can enjoy. We've had season passes for the last four years and I really like the recent additions (wish they would've been able to find a way to keep Windseeker though). Voyage sounds like it will be another great addition and it offers something that's been missing at Knott's (an interactive dark ride).

As a "peeping Tom" looking in the Knott's window, a couple thoughts/questions.

I respect those who like a traditional dark ride with sets and figures throughout; but, with the fully refurbished flume and Calico Mine ride in the last couple years, I am curious why you would want yet another dark attraction of the same style?

I have a hard time trying to see Knott's taking on Disney and Universal in some sort of "Battle of the Titans". It seems the park and CF corporate management has found a good marketing/development path to carve out their own market share; without being foolish enough to take a battering ram to the gates of Disney or Universal.

Finally, I can't even think of comparing a 10-12 million dollar dark ride attraction to a $100 million+ dark ride attraction at Disney or Universal.

Trust me, it is MUCH CHEAPER for your average family in SoCal to take everyone to knotts. Dark rides are great because they fill in that gap of attractions both older and younger guests will want to ride.

Knott's doesn't need to compete with Disney. They just need to be the cheaper more accessible themepark, but cheap doesn't have to mean lower in quality! I honestly think this attraction helps add some depth to the overall Knott's experience. I personally would even welcome another more traditional dark ride built some where in the park.

You wouldn't believe how many people have trouble grasping this concept.

I'm liking this dark ride trend, and I imagine Cedar Point will follow suit soon as well.

Let's not forget that the last few years have also seen major refurbishments for the log ride and the mine train. I'm glad that they spruced up the Boardwalk, as it was looking pretty bad there (I always thought that Perilous Plunge was an eyesore). I agree that they're moving in the right direction.

If you're looking for GP quotes to add to the "Things GP say" thread, park FB & Youtube pages are the place to go.

Glorious dirt behind the wall. This used to be the ramp that would take ya up to level 2 boarding.

Peek up into the old KOD loading area. Ya can make out a little of the mural that was behind the loading area.

Overall construction area. Arcade is closed and they took down all awnings up top
