The Knott's Berry Farm (KBF) Discussion Thread

P. 651: Montezooma's Revenge project terminated?

Recommended Posts

I concur. Timberliner's are the way to go for Ghostrider. It would be such an improvement. And if topper track was purchased.... One of the top woodies once again and hopefully for a while to come.

How many rides are Timberliners running on? 1?

I'll wait to see if they improve Voyage at all before saying it would be an improvement.

^ Actually two rides have Timberliners! Wooden Warrior at Quassy and Twister at Gröna Lund. Although it is still unlikely to see them on Ghostrider because CF doesn't have any relationship with the Gravity Group. Also, Millenium Flyers are unlikely because due to GCIs strict standards for putting them on other wood coaster but the ones they design. I think the most likely trains would be the new Rocky Mountain trains on Outlaw Run if CF does a Topper Track make over.

^ Exactly. Before making the assumption that a new train will fix the ride, perhaps the park should look at the ride itself. I've spoken to both GCI and TGG about their trains on other, older coasters, and they both say that just plopping down new trains on an old and busted track isn't going to show much improvement. The park would need to be willing to do a serious re-track of probably ALL layers of wood (not just the top 2 or 3), any adjustments the ride would need due to more than a decade of wear and tear, and THEN put on a new train...

Some unfortunate news regarding the talent at Haunt, which really makes me ashamed of our nation due to how people are.

http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2012/10/knotts_scary_farm_guest_claim.php

ORIGINAL POST, OCT. 19, 12:32 P.M.: The monsters at Knott's Scary Farm are paid to spook and frighten--not heckle and harass.

A guest named Nicole Cramer claims she had a "traumatizing experience" on Wednesday night when she and her three girlfriends friends were bullied by cast members for being overweight. The 31-year-old Santa Ana resident said one male employee dressed as a green witch remarked, "Why don't you go back to Jenny Craig?" Then, she said, another monster dressed as a hunchback pig circled around her while snorting.

Cramer said she talked to a manager about the incident, but he did not take down any information.

"It was really extreme," says Cramer, who was at the Buena Park theme park as part of Knott's Scary Farm's Scion Night. "This is not what people are paying for, to be insulted all night.

Since she posted her experience on the Knott's Scary Farm Facebook page, Cramer said she has received messages from several other guests saying they were also harassed for their weight or sexuality. Her post has since been removed. A Knott's representative could not be immediately reached.

"It's like, you're bullied as a kid and now you have to be bullied as an adult, too?" she said. "When did this become acceptable?"

(And the letter from the lady herself)

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this to inform you of the traumatizing experience I had last night at Knotts Scary Farm, for the scion 2012 event. I've had my Scion since 2005, and have attended each event. This was the first time I among others were bullied, harassed, humiliated and embarrassed by "cast members".

We entered the park prior to 7:00pm, so it wasn't quite dark yet. The 4 of us, all plus size women were approached to take a photo in the entrance area. Of course there were a bunch of monsters standing around in this area. I asked one if he would take a picture with us, and verbatim he said "not with that hot mess, why don't you go wipe your eyebrows off". We were all pretty shocked and advised the camera girl we would not be taking a photo. I immediately knew this wasn't appropriate from an employee, so I proceeded to the window right of the entrance to inform the guy working. He pretty much just said oh well, and I should go online and write a letter. As we walked back toward ghost town, we passed the same "monster" a very tall thin male dressed as the wicked witch, with an all green face. I said "you are a jerk". Now there were people everywhere, and he walked past me, yelled at the top of his lungs "why don't you go back to Jenny Craig?" then the "monster" that is dressed as a hunch back pig came circling around me snorting.

The entire crowd starts to "boo" and yells "fight", clearly I didn't fight the employee because I would have been kicked out.

At this point my entire group is in disbelief, shocked and filled with anxiety. We stood in the front collecting our thoughts and emotions when all of a sudden we see the same "monster" harassing another guest. Security escorted the employee to the back gate near the water tower.

The same thing happened to this male guest, he asked for a picture and was called a "fat hot mess" along with being called the name of a popular drag queen.

Finally a manager Alan came out to speak with us. We both told him our stories and how unacceptable this is to treat guests this way. He only said he would take care of it, didn't collect any of our information, and was very easy going about it.

We decided we would go ahead and stay and attempt to enjoy ourselves. That was a terrible idea. On scion night there is music throughout the park, and even a dj performance. One of the young ladies in my group was dancing when a "cast member" came up to her and said "are you dancing, because it looks like you are having a seizure?"

Later in the night I was sitting on a bench outside of boomerang, when a clown came up to me and started yelling at me to get off of my phone. I said "you are mean leave me alone" he responded with "we are paid to be mean". Not to mention through every maze the employees were yelling "scions suck" "this is kia soul night".

All of these incidents are clear examples of weight and disability discrimination. When did this become acceptable? When did knotts become a place of ridicule? People pay to get scared, not bullied. When did these employees start getting paid to harass people?

I work in customer service at a major insurance company in the area; I would be fired immediately if I ever spoke to a customer like this. This behavior would not happen at the happiest place on earth. It is a crime to discriminate for weight, disability, or sexual preference. Maybe its time for knotts to look at their customer service and the culture of their employees as well as the experience they are marketing.

I will never step foot in Knotts Berry Farm again. This makes me sad. My father loved Knotts when he was alive, and I have several items that are sentimental to me that he purchased at the gift shops. I have made my experience known across several social networking sites. My best advice would be to pay a little more money, and head to Disneyland, where people are actually nice.

I truly hope no one else has to live through this painful experience.

Sincerely,

Nicole Cramer

Apparently, it sounds like there's more to the story than what her letter claims, based on all the comments below...while I understand that maybe the talent took it a bit...harsh, she only asked for it when she had called the talent a just as offensive name. Some of the other claims are just ridiculous...why cry over your poor toaster on wheels being made fun of? Why cry over being told to get off the phone by a clown? I would have kindly joked back, further making my night more enjoyable.

I'm curious as to what the outcome will be, and feel sorry for the KBF talent tonight as I'm sure there's that dark cloud hovering above them putting them in a bad-ish mood.

I'm told the Scareactors are no longer allowed to communicate to the guests anymore in any way what so ever. I'll be there tomorrow night, but I can't see this as doing anything but dimishing the HAUNT experience. I for one, love it when the monsters torment me. It adds to the fun.

Sounds like a successful night at Knott's Scary Farm if you ask me!

BTW, I believe the character was one of the tricksters. In other words: it was his job to joke around. And I'm pretty sure pigs are supposed to Oink. Same for clowns joking around.

Working in the industry as long as I have, it is VERY easy to tell a legitimate complaint vs. a BS one. When they throw around terms they don't even understand (discrimination in this case) and think they understand how it should have been done because "they work...", it is a dead giveaway it is a bogus complaint.

And since when is being festively plump now a disability? It's her own fault anyway that she got herself in this predicament. Other than that, she needs to go back under her rock and never leave it.

This. If you know people are going to mock you, then why are you going anyways? Oh well, the best thing that can come out of this is less crowds for Haunt.

Wow, this story makes me sick. When I go to a haunt, I don't expect to be treated the same as at any other time. I expect a more rude and crude experience, the park is supposed to be filled with monsters created from the dregs of the earth. If I wanted a 'nice' experience I would go to Disneyland. Plus, it really is looking more and more like this woman was the instigator, one of those self entitled princesses who don't want to be called out on their own crap. I really hated seeing all the comments about the abuse the talent receives. They work long hours to do something they love and to give something special to park guests. Hopefully Knotts will be able to find the truth of the matter and let the talent do their thing.

Some people just don't belong at Halloween events. Visiting a park during these special events is not the same as visiting during the day. If you can't handle being scared, harassed, or offended by employees who are doing their job, you should stay away. The talent is simply acting in a role, and everything they do is just part of their character, not a personal attack. In my opinion, nothing mentioned in that letter seemed inappropriate, so unless the actors were actually in violation of an official policy I hope it gets disregarded. There's no reason the event needs to be watered down for everyone just because someone who couldn't handle it attended.

I've never been to one of these events but for those that do, do you go in anticipating taunts and jeers from the 'haunters', as opposed to just scares? Sounds to me like this lady didn't understand what she was attending.

Lets also not forget that she makes several mentions of what customers "pay" for, but also makes mention of owning a scion since 2005 and going to SCION night every year. So one, she's gotten in free every year. Two, calling someone the F word is unacceptable, and off the record after being called that to only have said she was fat seems minute and mundane. Some people...
