NEWS: Japanese tourist dies in Cambodian coaster derailment

A female Japanese tourist died Friday night in a roller coaster derailment at an amusement park in Cambodia, a local government official said Saturday.

 

Bun Tharith, deputy governor of Siem Reap Province, identified the victim as 21-year-old Saki Takita from Aomori Prefecture. She had arrived in Cambodia on Wednesday.

 

Speaking by telephone from Siem Reap, he said a Cambodian tourist guide riding with Takita in the two-seat front car of the roller coaster suffered serious injuries when it went off the rails. They were the only two people riding the roller coaster at the time of the accident.

 

Local police said three people working at the amusement park were immediately detained after the derailment, which is thought to have been caused by a loose bolt.

 

Home to the Angkor Wat temple complex, the northerly province of Siem Reap is Cambodia’s main tourist hub.

Well that doesn't look dangerous at all. That looks like an accident waiting to happen. I'm not sure what safety standards are like in Cambodia but just by looking at this picture, I guess it's safe to assume they are not very strict. It's always sad to hear about a death like this.

We were in Siem Reap about a year ago. I would definitely not go on a coaster in that country or most likely any third world country. Is this really near Angkor Wat? This was not on the tourist path. Sad event.

I wouldn't be surprised of they didn't have any standards for safety over there. As it turns out, there's only about 4 operating roller coasters in Cambodia.
