Explosion at epcot!!

Recommended Posts

As reported early this morning at DisneyWorldTrivia.com, the inferno barge, responsible for many of the spectacular effects for the Illuminations fireworks show in the World Showcase lagoon, exploded today at Epcot. The explosion could be heard thoughout the park and nearby Boardwalk resort area.

There have been no reports of any injuries at this time. The barge sits in the middle of the lagoon, far from Guests, but does normally contain two Cast Members inside during the show.

Want to hear a really horrible, mean story from when I was a CM? No? Ok, here it goes...

One time a group of about a dozen of my co-workers had gone out to Epcot for the evening and decided to watch IllumiNations. But they devised a story first about a guy named Charlie. So they arrive at where they were going to stand, and they find this family next to them. They start chatting and eventually found out that they had never seen the show before. So they start telling them that their friend Charlie was a pyrotechnician and had just gotten a promotion. They said that it was his first night on the center barge, and that he was *very* nervous that he was gonna screw something up. So they were all there to support him and they were going to take him out afterwards. So they chat a bit, then when the show started they all got really quiet and watched very intently.

So what happens next? The whole barge explodes into flames. And what did they do? The entire group immediately burst into hysterical screaming! They were screaming "Oh my God! Charlie!!! Noooo!!!" Then the flaming stops for a bit, and they're all just standing there pretending to cry and console each other when someone goes "No! Not the second set of fireworks!!!" and the barge explodes again! The family they'd been talking to says "That's not supposed to happen?!?!" and in between sobs they say no, it was just supposed to be fireworks.

They left the show early since they were all so upset about "Charlie," and supposedly the family they'd been talking to was very distraught about knowing someone had died in the explosion. So of course everyone gets to work the next day and *really* hoped they didn't run into that family again!

So of course now, every time I see the barge explode, I wish I'd been there to hear the story about Charlie.

Yay, first post!

Anyway, apparently that site made a story out of nothing. I asked the people over at AllEarsNet about it, and this is what they had to say:

"We heard about this as well, but on further investigation it appears it was actually a non-event, which is why we

did not write about it.

Apparently, each night after Illuminations they have to blow off the extra propane, and it creates quite a bang.

For some reason, the other day they blew off this propane during the day, which caused some alarm among folks who

weren't familiar with the procedure. Though it created an explosion, it seems it wasn't anything out of the ordinary --

just the timing of it was unusual.

Hope this helps."

Keep in mind, I haven't been to the park since the alleged incident, but I do find it just a bit funny that the local media hasn't jumped all over this. Because you know how much they just love to jump all over anything the least bit negative.

So I'd have to agree and say that it's nothing.

Well, it was a normal burnoff... except for the part where a piece of metal went flying through the air.

(reported by Steve at WDW Magic, on the 20th):

"Yesterday around 4pm, there was an explosion on the inferno barge in the World Showcase Lagoon. The problem was with the Air Launch Firework (ALF) system on the inferno barge. The ALF shell exploded whilst still inside the launch tube. Thankfully nobody was injured, but it is a reminder on the dangers the pyro crews around WDW face on a daily basis.

Both ALF systems (on the UK pavilion and on the inferno barge), have been pulled from the show whilst investigations are ongoing."

People that were there from the discussion boards reported a big piece of metal fying upwards, and splashing down into the lake.
