Hurricane Sandy vs. Roller Coasters

Recommended Posts

Yes... they're making a big deal out of nothing on their Facebook page. Here are some photos of the complete and total "devastation".

To be fair, nobody's overreacting to anything. The park just posted an update and pictures and everyone's just posting their concerns. There's no "OH TEH HUMANITY. TEH WORLD'S GUNNA END CUZ MEH FAVURIT PLACE IN TEH WURLD IS DESTROYED" and I'm sure most of the people posting on their page are locals who were directly affected by the storm anyway. If there are comments like that, I probably missed them.

Hershey and Knoebels had the exact same reactions last year on their Facebook pages after their floods.

If you read this thread I'm sure this is also in response to the video that was put out about Playland that claimed all sorts of damage.

Saying they got "hit hard" was a little ridiculous since everyone around them got hit harder. I agree that people overreacted to Hershey and Knoebels last year but at least those parks sustained SOME actual damage.

Let's have fun with Facebook comments.

I had so many wonderful memories there. I hope you can rebuild to provide that for others!!!

Rebuild what? The boardwalk that nobody ever walks on?

Took a picture of the boardwalk this fall. It is one of my favorite places to walk. The devastation from the storm is unbelievable . So upset .

Okay sorry, one person walks on. The only reason people walk on the boardwalk is to get to the bar. The "devastation" is minor. Relax...

No not playland!!! Damn Sandy!!

Everyone will remember where they were the moment they found out a plank in the kiddyland boardwalk was raised two inches. PS: Over 50 people are dead because of this storm.

I know, and I mentioned yesterday, that our Tony' s Pier is gone too! No more shrimps for a while, sad huh? Such devastation!!

I'm pretty sure the Zoltar Machine in the movie "Big" was on Tony's Pier so that's cool I guess, but the pier was always closed and not at all impressive. They just re-opened it last year as overflow seating for the Tiki Bar. Forgive me for not caring.

They also posted a picture of a tree that knocked a fence over but then wrote that nothing was damaged in that incident. The responses...

OH NO !!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT THE FENCE!!!!!!

we will rebuild!

Oh, deep in my heart... I do believe... We shall overcome some day

and what about the Tiki Bar?????

Finally... someone who has their priorities straight. Besides the Log Flume, Old Mill and Derby Racer this is the only thing of value at Playland. Yes... I said it. It's my home park and I basically grew up there so I'm allowed to hate on it. The Tiki Bar rules... sure I miss the old disaster of a place where we would just bring our own coolers full of beer and get drunk while eating $8 french fries but I can admit that the Tiki Bar is a dramatic improvement. Luckily it's completely fine... because the "damage" at Playland isn't a big deal.

Tweets and Statements from some of the "Jersey Shore" Cast.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy, especially our friends and family in Seaside Heights, A huge thank you to all the men and women who have been working around-the-clock to protect and help everyone. (They are) true heroes." -Pauly D
"This is a devastating time for the East Coast and my prayers are with everyone. I am thinking about my second family at the Jersey Shore and know that we can rebuild and come back stronger." -JWow
"It's devastating to see our boardwalk and favorite spots ruined. My prayers go out to everyone affected by the storm."-Snooki

It is refreshing to see that even the Jersey Shore cast has their priorities right. The boardwalks are probably the last thing the locals are worried about right now. Please, before you donate to the "Prince Desmond Save Teh Starry Jett" fund, consider donating to the Red Cross.

^ Thanks for your insight... It's good to hear from the locals.

No problem. lol. Sorry for being overly sarcastic but I just really don't have any interest in Playland's minor problems. I grew up with Playland and even though it's awful I'll always have great memories of the place and I can't help but like it (sort of like your favorite dive bar). That being said they dodged a bullet with this Hurricane and there are hundreds of thousands of people within an hour of Playland that have real problems to deal with (and in some cases, have lost loved ones). The only reason Westchester County Residents should care about this is that they'll be paying the deductibles and increased insurance premiums since Playland is currently subsidized by the taxpayers. In return they get a park that sucks but still charges $80 for a season pass (about $20 more than Great Adventure does) and $30.00 to get in for one day. They're likely just playing this up so they can ask everyone for more money next year. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather subsidize Playland than lose it completely but it's still a crappy deal for the taxpayers.

If Playland were wiped out by the storm we would all be a little sad (screw the ice rink though... it loses 3 million dollars a year and we pay for it. I wish the Hurricane leveled that thing and then spawned three tornadoes that picked up the debris of the ice rink and threw it all the way to Connecticut) but since Playland made out better than a lot of us, and since we now have a love-hate relationship with this tax burden of a park we don't want to hear about their problems right now.

Everything is cyclical. The piers will be back. The rides will be back. And new memories will be made.

Exactly. Amusement parks aren't museums and rollercoasters aren't exhibits. Every so often there may be a coaster or ride with the heritage/cultural value to make it worth restoring and saving, but the vast majority don't fall into this category.

^^Exactly. There was a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth when the Big Bad Wolf was removed, but at least that ride was one of the last of a dying breed.

Here's to as speedy a recovery as possible for the people of the Jersey Shore.

Seaside Heights

http://www.cbs12.com/news/top-stories/stories/vid_2885.shtml

This video shows the most comprehensive aerial view of damage to Seaside Heights that I've seen online. The first two minutes focus on the town, while the remainder shows Casino Pier and then Funtown Pier.

Coney Island

Assessment of Coney Island damage from the New York Post

http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/brooklyn/sandy_takes_coney_island_amusement_REgeRehfqaAs8HP7D8Q0MP

It may not be as bad as the Jersey Shore, but Hurricane Sandy also hit Coney Island’s amusement district pretty hard.

Days later, much of the fabled boardwalk – both by the amusement district and elsewhere -- is covered several inches deep in sand.

Parts of Luna Park, Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park and the Scream Zone today were also covered in sand from the storm surge.

Fencing along parts of these amusement parks were ripped apart by the storm.

The beach was cluttered with trash and furniture – likely from nearby homes in Seagate, which was hit extremely hard.

Preliminary assessments showed no structural damage to the landmark rides – the Cyclone Rollercoaster, Wonder Wheel and Steeplechase, city officials told the Post. However, there is significant damage to the decking of Steeplechase Pier that will need to be replaced.

While most the rides are intact, nearly all of their electrical systems were damaged by a surge of up to seven feet of seawater and will have to be repaired.

Boardwalk shops fared better than the rides but some still reported damage.

Diana Carlin, owner of Lola Star boutique, tweeted “good news: the interior of the Lola Star boardwalk boutique is totally fine! I cried tears of relief!”

However, there's "bad news." Carlin’s says her new Surf Avenue store is “totaled.”

“I can't even comprehend how such destruction occurred,” she tweeted.

Operators at Tom’s Restaurant said their boardwalk shop survived in good shape.

Meanwhile, shops along Surf Avenue like the main branch of Nathan’s Famous was closed and fixing extensive flood damage.

City officials said it's too early to give cost estimates on damage.

I scrolled back through as much as I could tolerate, but if it hasn't already been posted Coney Island Cyclone (and Nathan's...what's a ride without a few in your belly?) survived wet but relatively no worse for wear. Well that again depends on what Zamperla decides.

In a non-coaster but Coney Island related item: Mitik, the orphaned walrus calf that arrived at the NY Aquarium just a few weeks ago, survived as did all of the other animals thanks to the dedicated staff that rode out the storm with them.

But with all the regrettable loss in New Jersey why Lord, oh why couldn't Sandy have struck at a time to make the final season of "Jersey Shore" really the final season?

missed larrygator's update by two minutes. Don't beat me.

^Are you really Australian?!?!? Rarely do we have an Australian poster who gets it and posts great stuff like this!!!!

Thanks, and yes, I am really Australian.

Some of these photos are just incredible, can only imagine how powerful that storm must have been to drag big, heavy rides into the ocean.

No, guys! He was totally SERIOUS. Stop being so rude to our members who asked a VERY obviously legit question.

Warning: Strong Language

Randy's reaction basically explains mine.

I hope the communities can rebuild themselves as well as the businesses including the piers. The only thing I take seriously about the piers are the people that had jobs there. As much as I hate hindsight I hope they can make the piers stronger now because of this.

I've been doing some mild searching and haven't found the answer yet, but does anyone know if these two piers were owned by the same company? If so, I could see a mega pier in the design phase.

The S&S as I recall was one of my favorites, largely in part due to the view.
