That's Hong Kong group meal was certainly one of the Top 3 of the trip. And there was real dessert, not watermelon. I really enjoyed that purple rice puddingish concoction.

^Agreed--that was a great Cantonese dinner, without any particularly bizarre surprises (aside from the sweet soup and the blue blocks at dessert).

When I went to Victoria Peak it was starting to get dark and the lights were coming on in the city. It was beautiful but we left to get back to see the light show on the buildings. I was really bummed after seeing the show that I didn't stay at the top and watch the lights come on.

Everything was delicious, especially the purple gelatinous cubes.

I miss eating with you lot of picky eaters!

^I think my problem with Hong Kong is that I went to Tokyo first. I feel that Hong Kong would have impressed me a lot more had I gone there before Tokyo. It has a nicer setting sure, but a lot of the 'cool quirky Asian/British' stuff just isn't as cool compared to anything in Tokyo.

Chapter 22: Disneyland Calls Him "Mini Me"--Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland is just the cutest lil' old Magic Kingdom you'll ever see. Yes, it's so small and darling that you'll want to give it a glass of warm milk and a pat on the head as you send it to bed. And it's received a fair amount of heat for this online, too.

But I think people need to give "The Happiest Little Place on Earth" a break here. Yes, it definitely needs more attractions--heck, they even list Sleeping Beauty's Castle as an "attraction" on the park map, even though it's nothing more than the main entrance to Fantasyland. But this is a young park that's on the move; it's quite pleasant and enjoyable, and Disney is steadily working to improve it. (For example, Mystic Manor looks like one of Disney's most promising new dark rides in years.)

Let's look at the positives here:

1. Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars--Once again, Disney has pushed the "family coaster" to a new level. This crazy "mine train" coaster, with its backward section and surprisingly intense launch is an excellent hybrid of Thunder Mountain and Expedition Everest. Beautifully themed and lots of fun.

2. Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy--While we were too early for the park's other Halloween offerings, Ghost Galaxy was up and running. This is yet another well-done piece of Disney holiday re-theming (as it was at the original Disneyland, I hear).

3. Jungle Cruise--A classic gets a refresh with extra rapids, cascades of water, and fire!

4. It's a Small World--Don't smirk, but I think this is one of the better versions of this old ride, and I think it was the first to incorporate classic Disney characters, too.

5. Setting--I love how the park is surrounded by mountains, thus giving it different look and feel from the other Magic Kingdoms.

What does the park lack beside a few more E-ticket attractions? Well, while it does have two excellent hotels, there isn't much to do in the evenings after the park closes. Some form of "Downtown Disney" would help make the resort feel more complete. (The Hollywood Hotel was excellent, by the way.) The park's Golden Mickeys show didn't make a lot of sense, unless it's purpose was just to string together unrelated Disney musical numbers. As I recall, only three rides have Fast Pass, too; then again, the park wasn't super busy that day.

I enjoyed HKD quite a bit, and it was great way to finish TPR's China Trip. The park welcomed us with open arms, too. We were let in early and walked back to Grizzly Mountain for a great ERT and filming session, and we were given priority access to RC Racer, It's a Small World, and Space Mountain, as well.

All in all, a great day. My thanks to the staff of Hong Kong Disneyland and to Robb and Elissa for making it all possible. I look forward to visiting this park again, someday.

I took a lot of pictures. As for how good they are, you be the judge.

01.jpg.daacf84e28d73bf75b6d1a6cf3d59b7e.jpg

As usual, Mickey is just darn glad to see ya!

02.jpg.2c3792c64ad599f0d2aa523c78e596d3.jpg

Hmm--this looks vaguely familiar . . .

03.jpg.bdcdf2b1370cabeb1c8367f7dfe14b93.jpg

Yes, HKD promises all this . . .

04.thumb.jpg.c99d0aaf09e5f66c19dffd8341fa09f5.jpg

. . . as well as an opportunity to face the inevitability of your own mortality.

05.jpg.ffd99d639a0021a7d5b247fa73fef19e.jpg

OK, Anahiem Disneyland--Hong Kong's castle got mountains! What you got?

07.jpg.a588f706097a31a4cfe6d92b234693bb.jpg

What? How did we end up at Disney California Adventure?

07a.jpg.b0f6b9fc2ebe787cab8e1a99da68dce5.jpg

OK, would you trust this crazed bear with anything?

08.jpg.6f389dd0b0cde64d28cfd7d7f554503b.jpg

Robb will nearly fold himself in half to get a good shot.

09.jpg.aeb9227932aee92d58fa882cb5d31d78.jpg

Warning lights = theming.

10.jpg.33edd7d93978c880da46dd2e677a9aa8.jpg

This was the opinion of the group, too--another winner for Disney! (More about BGMRMM, pronounced "Be-gu-mer-mm" I think, later).

11.jpg.5abae80e2e2ca887cbbacc426acaae96.jpg

Mystic Manor is part of Mystic Point, which makes perfect sense when you think about it.

12.jpg.d8ba0ee08a0eb486407d716ebb003f14.jpg

I'm glad that the park isn't building just another Haunted Mansion clone. While I think HM is a great ride, it's good to see Disney changing things up a bit in Hong Kong. This is going to be an entirely different experience.

13.jpg.0be42ce943bc27a8ab47cb174c8a78fc.jpg

Next up, a little Intamin goodness tricked out as a toy (RC Racer).

14.jpg.6d407545ebd9943d59e309d3d56fdf6c.jpg

Hey--a working half-pipe-type ride! Already better than Victory Kingdom's!

15.jpg.a54f0519dfcd15db2e39e9a9a15f5a89.jpg

The Toy Story section is very nice, and I liked how they themed up some fairly standard rides.

15a.jpg.aae1da5864dfec027a0e52b3b7f2b13d.jpg

And . . . go!

16.thumb.jpg.b9b5549b58f960bfbb8efce28de88005.jpg

Yes, the lever is synced up to the ride--a very nice touch.

18.thumb.jpg.ee31444ad6152c07c89e4971de416991.jpg

Fun with some nice air--perfect family ride (unless your family has eaten lots of squid balls before boarding).

19.jpg.2934dfb292f7d62c58e2c9ff1698d1ef.jpg

Oh boy! Small World! I know that Larry is very excited!

21.jpg.9542f9706c7b2457495d93b72eccb491.jpg

We were told that Small World was a short cut to Space Mountain. We blindly accepted this.

20.jpg.da7e90fc470188629b978817c58a2395.jpg

OK, what are Bambi and Thumper doing at the North Pole? Above all, what is Thumper planning to do to Bambi?

22.jpg.22847b38a58b9ec3859ac07ca445f0f9.jpg

At least Pinocchio is at home in Italy. Maybe he'd like a nice Stromboli.

23.jpg.fe3843082e13edc82451d879a05b066b.jpg

Allah akbar!

24.jpg.4164188de4a8b22177fa79a5dc588604.jpg

"Death from above, infidel dogs!"

25.jpg.a7392e5b40be4719d9cd906bc0414527.jpg

What? How'd we get to Epcot?

26.jpg.7397d7b321385ed9c2c32806147d3549.jpg

If Woody and Jesse had existed when Mary Blair designed the original version of this ride, she totally would've used them.

27.thumb.jpg.d27e2d81ae5961ad84132c806059de17.jpg

Yes, I know a lot of Disney fans complained when they added these characters to Small World, but they need to relax. The characters fit in perfectly with the ride's classic look, and who doesn't like Baloo the Bear?

28.jpg.c9b64bcc8266673745b54610a53b4a67.jpg

I peep at purple pandas, parading around the promenade . . . sorry, that was just a nightmare I had once. At least it isn't a satanic raccoon!

29.jpg.202404fb3e71e9178e7fa087c6b49fb8.jpg

"IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL! . . ." Come on,. everybody sing!

30.jpg.3d385e7dddeb62a7f94352ed9d948905.jpg

We mortified our souls with Small World, thus making us pure enough to endure the horror of Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy. (It was great.)

30a.thumb.jpg.fb11c4cb954fc5ced43d9bc1ca5f5282.jpg

Robb mentioned that Ghost Galaxy had to be "passed" by the Film Censorship Board, just like a movie. The board certificate is the white sheet of paper on the lower left.

31.jpg.ee17a3c67f2121eca03edcfdf71e5ce3.jpg

The board rated it BGB for "Big Glowing Balls"!

32.jpg.86ddb004301d5d5d9888090455b5c013.jpg

HKD doesn't have a "traditional" Frontierland; Adventureland fills that role instead.

33.thumb.jpg.eb680bb5b614176239487f84af5435e8.jpg

Wherever there's an animatronic hippo in need, Theme Park Review is there!

34.jpg.999bc4a3eb58a9004f735f7d6965bb15.jpg

Yes, only English people need fear getting wet.

35.jpg.760fa6d31048b9c1f81fed364ae6c007.jpg

Sheesh! Looks like they themed the queue to my parents' old storage unit.

36.jpg.13c86a8a67e18eaf10d5d39ef06e0aeb.jpg

I wonder if the jokes are funnier in Chinese?

37.jpg.477363b8610b04a3026e33de988c829e.jpg

At HKD, Tarzan's Treehouse = Tom Sawyer's Island.

39.jpg.e8b3cb6faf395881390c80ca5c9664a6.jpg

Yes, there are some familiar sights on this river.

40.thumb.jpg.44d41f1b67006f1dbfa607ec4f4759bf.jpg

"I say, who booked this bloody 'adventure' holiday? Cyril? Well, he's going to get a right thumping from me if we ever get back!"

41.jpg.b44904ee7dfa6452931d297eda050f9f.jpg

Now here's the twist. Your boat is trapped in a conflict between gods of fire and water!

42.jpg.bf25b335f7474fdf7f19c61fb1ed6430.jpg

"Ugh! What was I thinking? Goose head soup always give me heartburn when I wash it down with tequila."

43.jpg.6f1218d51d7a7420893e8c023a2127a7.jpg

"'Scuse me folks, but I think I'm gonna . . . BLEAH!" More to come. (Well, not more vomiting.)

Yes, there's still more Hong Kong Disneyland. You have been warned.

44.thumb.jpg.1caac292e4cc18b80c481a5401721db8.jpg

As you can see, food offerings are a bit different here than you might be used to. Unfortunately, they lack the multiple flavors of popcorn they sell at the Tokyo parks, but there's always those curried fish balls.

45.jpg.e9ef37d333e091f2779a1a588160c244.jpg

And let's not forget the squid! Perfect with "butter corn on cob."

46.jpg.7577cbf98861a4f9bddcad202538d735.jpg

Yep--the same show as in other Disney parks. It is one of the better 4D movies, especially the bit with the nice smelling apple pie . . .

47.jpg.a8f291a76fd2cd1842952bcbb359434f.jpg

o-o-o-o . . . apple pie . . . which was very little to do with the show . . . but it's so good . . .

48.jpg.97792a4a889a759e73c3f73776f7669c.jpg

As usual, Larry is totally into to getting his picture taken.

49.jpg.095237644ba29e0afd9245228ab40c00.jpg

Brian, they warn people to "please remain seated until the ride comes to a full and complete stop" for a reason.

50.jpg.3df81f453d60e9934b328a82f6e4b480.jpg

What? We're back in Florida again?

51.thumb.jpg.a3273b1d56632b3c9291b4c8e6c40e36.jpg

Yeah, don't pay attention to Eeyore, despite the fact that he tied brightly colored balloons to himself in a desperate plea for your attention.

52.jpg.34b4b7fe0ebcc58144161278c08e5a82.jpg

Well, at least it isn't the California version.

53.jpg.0427e64a0977eb617a39c5d106378f39.jpg

When there is no more room in Hell, the Pooh shall walk the Earth!

54.jpg.7c3276533d2d6894815b8072ca475f7f.jpg

57.jpg.1fab80e290e4b67b8be12b28109dccee.jpg

Yes, I do like this park's setting.

58.jpg.0eb551e228a60e59c96f5fceb3095cdc.jpg

I like the hot princesses, too.

59.thumb.jpg.4a8b24ad0f3f982438899b824997a0f3.jpg

OK, why is Scottish Steve so pissed off at Stitch?

61.jpg.aca0fea0684e5392313d7de1b45e1282.jpg

Oh, man, Stitch ratted me out at Paris Disney back in '08! I want Stitch dead! I want his family dead! I want his house burned to the ground!

60.thumb.jpg.06ac9fde8cfda655c653686772bf87e9.jpg

Big deal. I've met people who can make "matter-sucking black holes" by opening their mouths--and they're not even aliens.

63.thumb.jpg.1cdebc84b1a82848378dc6d662fdb040.jpg

Oh.

66.jpg.b62a8fb93cb342a934fa2b31ef4494f0.jpg

Looks like someone forgot to plug in their extension cord.

67.jpg.99be3bdc19a7586ff4a84ccb00f20c6a.jpg

Yes, I have seen the future! It looks a lot like the present.

69.thumb.jpg.a1b2294694ffe276035b1034e5aa4580.jpg

The Royal Banquet Hall offered Chinese, Japanese, and American food.

The dumplings were very good.

71.jpg.85603e6f7055492bcf1154ecd43fab46.jpg

It wouldn't be a Magic Kingdom without a train.

As you can see, Adventureland isn't too busy at the moment.

76.jpg.ac0c0e5540a9174e5fbe0506a7956933.jpg

"Excuse me, but can you tell me how to find the African Veldt? I'm supposed to meet a 'Mr. Line' or 'Lion' there for tea."

77.jpg.b9d818440ecf3ae9fa2f10e600deb218.jpg

OK, brace yourself! We're about to experience the "Castle Attraction."

78.jpg.eef320162640240851e8e874b9aa10fa.jpg

What did you think of that? Pretty cool attraction, eh?

79.jpg.128dc30ec9fdf1b8ef33b4033d01719c.jpg

OK, this doesn't look nearly as happy as that other graveyard. (I guess HDK's Halloween event is a bit more intense than Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.)

81.jpg.8744b5d02f1fd28b1313341f282da613.jpg

Buzz Lightyear is great in any country. Even France.

109.jpg.eb5a40c313e98f46d334804d4f1c6fd7.jpg

. . . Space Mountain after dark! That'll rule!

110.jpg.7524dd306be8a409e060a57dfb61f072.jpg

Admit it--you can't get enough of those big glowing balls.

111.jpg.3ee356cd17aeffa71443678925d172d0.jpg

Robb and Elissa refer to this as "Food Court Tomorrowland." It is cool looking after dark.

112.jpg.4b8eeeb41fc095f93da57aada3d1e24a.jpg

It's getting more ominous.

And thus this trip ends--with me about to pass out at dinner. Thanks for reading!

^ Well, at least we've done it.

My group wasn't too thrilled about the whole thing, too.

Would I go to it again? No.

I would rather see "Philharmagic" again.

Great report Chuck! At this Disney park,

there really was enough time to see the

small things done around there. IMhO

Loved the Disney portion, and the entire report! Thanks a ton for all the updates. One of my favorite trip reports on TPR by far!

I love seeing the different Disney parks. I'm definitely liking the new additions to the park.

Another terrific installment; it is cool to see how this park really does have, and is continuing to develop, a unique personality. It is jarring to see mountains in the background, but in a good way.

And I LOL'd pretty loudly at the "Dawn of the Pooh" caption. (That still ranks as one of the best movie taglines ever.)

Thanks for the hilarious journey through China Chuck!

HKDL seems like a nice Disney Property and with the expansions being completed a well rounded full day Disney Park. I hope one day to check it out and see how it compares first hand.
