Its big and all but I think ever since the 2004 playoffs it has gotten way too much media attention. Whenever the two meet all of baseball has to stop and watch. Movieguy Posted June 13, 2009 Share Posted June 13, 2009 The joy over Pittsburgh winning both the Stanley Cup and The Lombardi trophy this year can be quickly sobered by the fact that they are also home to the worst team in Major League Baseball. They've been the worst for some time, as a matter of fact. I'm still a Pirates fan, and I've always hoped through the years, but the fact remains that they have not had a decent season since 1997. Even teams like the Devil Rays have managed to have good seasons in the last decade...not so for the Pirates. Yes, they have a very nice park that was given to them recently, but they're still stuck with owners who won't spend anything on the team itself, and any good player they get has to be traded away for 2 or 3 more rookies. Frankly, I'm starting to lose hope, and forsee one of two possibilities for the Pirates in the future: 1. Contraction. Remember when the Minnesota Twins were threatened with this a few years back? 2. Moving. For years, I've seen jobs, people, businesses, you name it, leaving the North for the South. America is all about the South now, and despite the turnaround the city of Pittsburgh has managed in recent years, people still want to be where it's warm. This is why I could also see the Pirates, despite their history in MLB, moving to a Southern City that doesn't currently have a team, like anywhere in North or South Carolina. Sorry if I sound excessively negative about this, but like I said, after all these years, I can't see my favorite MLB team now being anymore than the modern-day St Louis Browns. South Carolina has no pro sports, and I'd think that would be a nice town to have a retro ballpark blend right in. However, I'm not sure the Pirates are going anywhere soon, irregardless of their humility. I think the Pirates have the lowest payroll in the majors, and let's face it, in MLB, payroll means everything. I have to disagree. Putting out a lot of money can drastically increase a team's odds at playing in October, but not guarantee it. The Yankees had the highest payroll in MLB last year, but didn't make the playoffs, while the Devil Rays, with a payroll less than a third of the Yankees', went to the World Series. They got the new stadium, so they aren't going anywhere. Contraction was Bud Selig's douchebag way of squeezing a new stadium out of Minnesota and starting the process of hooking his buddy up with the Red Sox. With a new stadium, there's no need to contract. And they would need to find another team to disband as well, otherwise it would be impossible to keep the 162 game schedule. There's also no need to move, since walking away from a new stadium is probably impossible due to contractual agreements. All of the teams have the resources to win. Investing in scouting/player development works just as well as having a giant payroll. It's just a matter of creating the right system for your team. But, both the Marlins and the Rays seem to be back to their losing ways this year, while the Red Sox and Yankees look as strong as ever (Yeah, I know people are saying the Yankees are struggling, but look at their record). low payroll teams have had good years, yes, but from what I've seen, those tend to be fluke years. Of course it's disappointing when a team that was in the world series last year is currently only 1 game over .500. ...But they are still only 6 games behind that team with the giant payroll. Frankly the only disappointing thing about the Rays this year is the disabled list. Aki's out, luckily Burrell came back last night and Jason Bartlett is playing down in Port Charlotte. Now if only Scott Kazmir could get up to it again or David Price could gain a little more control on his pitch. I'm eagerly awaiting the Rays to be back in the playoffs again this year. They definitely have a ton of potential, but I just don't see them wining the division. I like the Marlins, but you just can't build a team on pure talented youth. Sox go for the sweep today. Mark DeRosa is on my fantasy team - I was kicking myself early on in the season for drafting him, but he is on fire lately. Aside from that, I look forward to seeing the Pirates up close as I really do think they are going in the right direction now with all of their youth. I hope he gets booed loudly by both Padre and Dodger fans. This guy cheated the game, he doesn't deserve to come back to a standing ovation. Audio111 Posted July 3, 2009 Share Posted July 3, 2009 It's not very cool when one of your starting pitchers insists on pitching at the Major league level when he still has a bad foot and knows hes not in top form. Honestly Wang is greedy, If he wanted his team to win more he would step down for the rest of the season and get in the proper form for next season.
