Visiting LA and SF - advice for parks please!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Never been before and hoping to book a holiday to LA then onto SF in September and would like to do Six Flags & Disneyland. Will be travelling on my own and don't drive - plan to stay downtown LA. Can anyone give me some good advice on how I can get to either of these parks easily using public transport - not too worried about Universal LA as I have done the Orlando one a few times over. Also, is it worth trying to get to Knotts Berry while I am in the vicinity - how hard would that be?

Any help appreciated.

Since your staying in downtown LA using public transit isn't a bad idea to get to Six Flags.

Option 1.

From Downtown LA Union Station take Redline Subway to North Hollywood Station.

From North Hollywood Station take Santa Clarita Transit bus 757 to McBean Transit Center.

From McBean Transit Center take bus 3 or 7 to the park.

Option 2

From Downtown LA Union Station take Antelope Valley Metrolink Train to Newhall Station.

From NewHall Station transfer to either bus: 1, 2, 4, 14 to McBean Transit Center.

From McBean Transit Center take bus 3 or 7 to the park.

Option 3 (weekdays only)

From Downtown LA Union Station take Antelope Valley Metrolink Train to Santa Clarita Station.

From Santa Clarita Station take bus 501 directly to the park.

Option 4 (weekdays only)

From LA Union Station take Santa Clarita Transit bus #794 to McBean Transit Center.

From McBean Transit Center take bus 3 or 7 to the park.

Knotts can also be reached from downtown LA very easily.

Take LA Metro 460 from downtown LA and get off at Knotts Berry Farm Stop.

Or

Take Orange County Metrolink train from down town LA Union Station to Buena Park Metrolink Station. From Buena park Metrolink Station take OCTA bus #29 to the park.

....definitely give yourself plenty of transportation time.

The bus from our campground in Anaheim (less than a mile from Disney) to KBF in Buena Park last week took us about 45 minutes including the wait at the transfers.

From downtown LA to KBF or Disney could be very lengthy depending on day/time/traffic. It took us 3.5 hours (5-8:30 PM) to get from Venice Beach back to our campground in Anaheim last week during rush hour...and that was on a bus tour that didn't make any transit stops!

Just like I had heard in the past....LA definitely has some of the slowest traffic and worst mass transit I have ever seen in ANY city I have visited...and I've been in plenty of cities!

PS - San Fran/Oakland mass transit didn't seem all that bad - definitely much better than LA's.

PSS - FYI...I see you're from England - London's mass transit blows away anything I traveled on in LA.

We normally stay in Anaheim, walk to Disney, cab it to KBF and then take one of the bus tours to Magic Mountain. You do loose about an hour at the beginning of the day, but if you go on a quiet day then you should be OK, We've never had a problem getting on everything in a single day. If it is busy you can always buy yourself a flash pass.

Thanks for the replies everyone, really helpful. Have changed plans now and staying purely in SF, but might fly across to LA for a couple of days and do Disneyland and MM.

Philrad71, yep, English and yep, I love the underground in London, when it works its great, when it doesn't, just walk lol, but I guess I can't really do that in LA!!

Trevan Rex, really good idea staying near disney and cab to KBF, I like that thought - could treat myself to a disney hotel for the first time ever

As for MM, yep, if there are bus tours then I won't mind that at all, would be easier for me.

Final question - is it easy to get from LAX to Disney?
