Double0Kevin
Just going to re-post what I wrote last April about this project... ...Hi, Harmon Tower, how's it going? To be fair, Harmon Tower didn't open due to not even coming CLOSE to passing inspection. The foundation rebar is all screwed up and it would have needed to be rebuilt, basically, if it ever was going to pass an inspection. Speaking of Harmon Tower, though, just today a judge gave the OK to dismantle it. I wonder how long MGM is planning on keeping it as a giant billboard. I believe he was remarking on the fact that even when something here is under construction it still doesn't guarantee it's going to be finished and/or opened. Nothing is for sure in this town, even when it's for sure.
montezooma
I’ve spent the past couple of days in Las Vegas and had some time to kill so I thought I would go take a look at Speed: The Ride. As you can see from the photos is is stored very neatly. There seems to be no site of the trains. I also went to the site of the new GIANT ferris wheel over at the Quad. This thing is huge, and the Quad is looking pretty damn good too. Enjoy the pics!
Extreme
How do you true that wheel? I don't think my spoke wrench is gonna work.
DenDen
HOLY CRAP, that looks amazing. Thanks for sharing Shane! But at the same time, the other giant Ferris wheel is going nowhere as you see in this picture... the concrete towers are the fork of the wheel. This project is apparently bankrupt, twice! Sad... Double0Kevin
The wheel is just crazy gigantic. I like to take Paradise Road to work sometimes just so I can check out the wheel. It just towers over everything around it. Can't wait to see it all finished.
jray21
That wheel really is huge! Glad to see a project actually being completed! I'm also glad to see that Speed looks to be in good shape.
kailisun98
I think Speed looks like its rusting a little. But definitely not as badly as Greezed Lightning @Kentucky Kingdom
coolkid
You're right, Greezed Lightning is a terrible rust bucket.
CoasterAddict-com
Back in the day, it was probably the best ride in Vegas. Of course, the rides atop Stratosphere have taken over in most people's opinions... and the new rumors for Vegas (and previous ride rumors) have outclassed this launch coaster. However, it was great to eat a little food before or after this ride at the NASCAR Cafe!
Meteornotes
Only ever got to ride it once, but I did enjoy the coaster. I really doubt we will ever see it operate again, though. dt
Jew
Well eventually it will be sold as a part of this projects inevitable bankruptcy. Hopefully it won't be for scrap.
gisco
I'm with Dave, I don't think this thing will ever run again. Who ever would but it would have to modify the layout and I don't see that happening.
coastered
Lately there was news about the skyvue wheel, but we didn't hear anything about Speed. What will be it's future? Is it still stored in the same area? Are there any recent pics of the track parts?
Mr Stratosphere
I honestly think it is just going to sit there and rot and eventually be sold for scrap.
Double0Kevin
Yeah, it's future is bleak.
KBrylczyk
I'm very tempted to buy a plot of land in the middle of the desert. Then I'm going to call whoever currently owns it and tell them I will take it off their hands. Voila! Free coaster!
Kyle Coleman
It would be a shame to just let a very solid ride just sit there and eventually rot away to nothing. Its future does look pretty bleak though. Been sitting there exposed to the elements for I think about two years now.
robbalvey
I honestly think it is just going to sit there and rot and eventually be sold for scrap. Yeah, I wrote this coaster off the day it closed at the Saharah. When you have multiple huge projects half-completed all over Vegas, I highly doubt this ride is a blip on anyone's radar. I mean, the Harmon Tower or Fountain Blue is the equivalent of someone building an Epcot sized park in Orlando, complete with rides, and then never opening it. 619fan
It is so sad to see this... I stood before the Sahara the last time I've been to Vegas but as Robb mentioned, with all the other things around in Vegas who would take care of this coaster. There were a lot of rumors, that also have been heard here in Germany, that there is someone interested in the Sahara complex, but, unfortunately, nothing happened... Might wanna double check that, chief. SLS bought the site a while ago and are reopening by Labor Day.
Woodie Warrior
I would love to see Speed reopen, but seeing it rust away, I have to agree that it will most likely never be reconstructed.

Jew
Being from Germany, I imagine not lots of Las Vegas news makes it that way... The removal of Speed was one of the moves SBE made prior to the SLS being built. SBE has owned the property since 2007, shut down the Sahara in 2011, and didn't start reconstruction until last year because they were struggling to raise the money. Speed was closed for six months in 2008-2009 while SBE figured out WTF they wanted to do. Edited February 19, 2014 by Jew
Gutterflower
I may have missed something but is the ride still stored in the same place near Mandalay Bay and behind that Mcdonalds? Couldn't spot it on Google Maps or Bing. Its on the zoomed out Google Maps but not the zoomed in one. suggesting its gone? Although that zoomed in one looks older? I'm afraid I'm not well versed enough in Vegas to tell.
Myself
^Do you mean when the camera is angled at 45 degrees? That imagery is older. If you look at Sahara from a 45 degree view, Speed is still there.
