There is moderate damage, but the entire area from points east and west of Houma are completely without power. The estimation on when it will be restored - as early as tomorrow to as late as a few weeks from now. Not pleasant. Remember I'm supposed to get married this coming weekend (Sept. 3). SFNO is on the east side of NO. That was the side of NO that caught an unbelievable amount of rain and storm surge. There are stories out that people retreated to their attics because of the rising water. The water kept coming up and they eventually drowned in their attic because they couldn't get out. I think it is safe to say that SFNO is under water. I don't know what the status is of the coasters and other tall structures are. I'll try to find out and let you know. We are heading back to Houma tomorrow. It may be a long time before I get electricity, so I don't know when I'll get to post again. Thanks for everyone's posts and encouragement. I'll be in touch. The destruction is just shocking. Thoughts and prayers go out to all affected, and particularly to those who couldn't escape hell on earth. That being said, this is really bad. As Crispy said, in New Orleans it's not necessarily the impact from the Hurricane, but the Levy breaking. Didn't Led Zeppelin predict this? Watching CNN today it appears the Levy was built after the last HUGE hurricane in the area, Camille I think it was. But the Levy was only built to withstand a Cat. 3 Hurricane because that was the extent of the technology at the time. So New Orleans was basically on borrowed time, and this was going to eventually happen. What I don't understand is ... the technology exists NOW to make the Levy stronger, yet they just left it. I feel bad for all effected, anybody else see that one guy in I think it was Mississippi that lost his wife and looked pretty damn helpless looking for her. Even the reporter started crying. Sure, you can say "You should have left" but you still feel bad for the guy, he lost his wife because he couldn't hold on to her. I couldn't imagine. And I hate to generalize here, but it appeared, to me at least, that all of the people looting were black. Now look, I can understand you need food, and the stores aren't open. VERY bad. True. But let's not forget about the past 30 years of killing in Israel, on both sides. Hell, I even heard some people comparing 9/11 to the Holocaust. Asses. Hurricane Katrina ... Its just so surreal seeing everything that has happened and is happening. It's going to be a VERY long time before that whole area is even remotely normal. It was very hard for me to watch those assholes that are SMILING and having a great old time LOOTING from Wal Mart.. It's like you're watching a movie or something but not.. there are really people THAT pathetic out there... smiling about looting a Wal Mart.. Like Gregg said, with food and water.. alright some compassion could be shown for that... but filling up shopping carts with TVs and other crap?!? I hope that they are slowly killed by some disease they catch when they are wading their TVs thru the water. (Of course I'm sure they'd expect the gov't to pay for their med's and stuff too... ironically) Anyways, I could go on and on about that. Why did they decide to build their casino's on top of barges though? That seems like an awfully stupid idea, since I saw one was now ON TOP of a Holiday Inn?! This cant even come close to the Tsunami though. That's a bad comparison like Elissa said. Maybe if a huge wall of water rushed into San Francisco without warning.. that could maybe be compared to it. This is a rough time for the folks down there, but houses are just houses and can be rebuilt, 100,000s of lives werent lost. Its important not to get distracted by all the bad things they are showing on TV. Thank god for the Coast Guard, and Army Reserves, and everyone else down there helping rescue people. I totally agree, but watching an interview with the Red Cross Spokesman, he was in Sri Lanka, and now is in Biloxi, his exact words are "the only thing that compares to this level of distruction is the tsunami, nothing was spared" so while its a bad comparison, they mean just how destroyed everything is, and not the toll on the public Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Did anyone see any of that amatuer video that one guy shot from a parking garage? Talk about CRAZY. Anyways, a little off topic but not worth starting a new topic about. My dad said someone told him today that here in PA, Sheetz (gas station) is paying over $3 a gallon just to get gas. So expect prices to jump well above $3 everywhere. Here they were $2.68 last night and $2.92 this morning. Not that I'm complaining. It was only a matter of time until we got a kick in the @$$. The city will be rebuilt, it will just take a very long time for it to return to the way it was, if it ever does. You live in Cali, you know, Ring of Fire and all that, you have earthquakes. I lived in Santa Cruz when the 1989 quake hit, we lived about 11 miles from the epicenter, it shook, ALOT. I now live in Albuquerque, and we don't really have ANY natural disasters. This has turned into the worst thing I have ever seen in my life, I just hope and pray our goverment gets off its hands and gets those poor people out of there I know that they will be sending some of the people who need medical attention to our hospital, I'll keep you posted.
