Your favorite coaster tunnel

Recommended Posts

Matterhorn. It uses the tunnels extremely effectively, and your first rides on that thing can actually be somewhat scary because in-experienced riders do not know where the yeti will be. Also, I love how because of the tunnels you never quite know where you will emerge back into the light, so occasionally when you pop out of a tunnel you will suddenly race with the car next to you. It also makes Matterhorn my favorite night ride.

The tunnel leading to the parking lot at Knott's. I got a loud muffler and when i drive through i rev it just enough to scare the people walking through. But, ill give pony express a mention just cause nobody else will. What can i say, i like the little horse shaped trains, they remind me of the rides in front of the supermarket when i was a kid.

1) The Zambezi Zinger at Worlds of Fun back in the day had an awesome tunnel at the end of the ride...though this is probably biased because it was my first coaster I can remember riding and now it is gone.

2) Space Mountain - the beginning and the end tunnels are actually tied for number 2...I touched the ceiling on the tunnel at the end of the ride last time...

3) Maverick

4) Sheikra

That's all that I feel are worth posting.

I also like that tunnel for that wooden coaster that goes under a huge parking lot and back through the other end. They need to turn off all the lights down in there and put fog machines and strobe lights in there. It would create a spooky effect.

SCBB's Giant Dipper has a great tunnel. You drop in right out of the station for a twisty, slightly disorienting, old-coaster-grease odorific experience that culminates with a light-at-the-end-the-tunnel view of the upcoming lift hill. I really like that start to the ride, and it just gets better from there.

Paris - BTM. I mean the third and last section. I know the drop might not be that exciting but accelerating in the dark is pretty disorienting!

Honorable mention to Oblivion. From the top of the drop it doesn't look the train is going to fit. Pretty scary

I like Hades and Tremors. Hades tunnel is really cool (especially with the lights on). Tremors has shorter tunnels, but they're cool because you get airtime as you're going into and out of each tunnel.

Why are tunnels cool with the lights on? Isn't a tunnel suppose to be dark and mysterious?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Disneyland Paris)

Especially at night, this tunnel hits riders square between the eyes. It is at the very end, so it is considered to be the grand finale. Not only is it a long decent that goes under the water in pitch black, but it feels like it just keeps going. It continues gaining speed. At night, you feel like your flying through an abyss. The tunnel is long, fast, intense, and very fun. Easily the best tunnel on a roller coaster.

Alpenexpress at Europa Park also has a nice tunnel. It smells good in there and there is SO MUCH to see. The tunnel has a helix which packs a punch. Oh and also, there is real fire.

Goliath's is another one. When at the top of the hill, it looks like a tiny tiny hole in the ground. This is a great tunnel to test your metal strength and hold your hands up during the decent into the tunnel. I loved it.

Other coasters with nice tunnels:

- Black Mamba

- Lockness Monster

- Alpengiest

Maybe because it was the first tunnel on one of the first big coasters I can remember from my childhood - My favorite tunnel on a roller coaster is the one on Revolution @ Six flags Magic Mountain. Riding the coaster today and going through that tunnel brings back memories for sure. I can almost picture the lack of OTSR's. Also, for some reason, it's the only tunnel I feel obligated to scream in.

These are the best tunnels I've experienced on a coaster.

Bizarro- Even while it was Superman, Bizarro had two amazing tunnels. Amazingly, after the transformation they actually got even better. Following the ride's thrilling first plunge, comes a mist-filled tunnel that has an incredible head-chopper thanks to the addition of a Bizarro cut-out. But the fun doesn't stop there as I actually find the second tunnel to be even better. Diving underground, the drop into this mist-filled tunnel provides incredible ejector air and laterals.

Dragon Coaster- While not particularly thrilling, the tunnel is absolutely gorgeous and one of the fondest memories that I have of Playland.

Dragon Mountain- I actually enjoyed this Arrow. Why? Well, the tunnels were one of the reasons. I just loved the final tunnel. It was completely in darkness, had a fairly large drop inside, and was followed by the ride's unique bowtie element.

Grizzly- What an insane tunnel! After a plunge into this tunnel, I honestly have no idea what happens in there. While not rough, the tunnel is simply aggressive as I got a mix of powerful air and laterals in there. I'd love to see a photo of what the track actually looks like in there.

Incredible Hulk Coaster- The launch tunnel is simply amazing. Not only is it a very picturesque structure, but inside is one of the most powerful launches I've ever experienced on a coaster.

Jack Rabbit (Seabreeze)- I just love the Jack Rabbit's tunnel. On my first ride, I was completely caught off-guard by the sudden drop that happens mid-way through. What a great way to end a coaster!

Beast- The tunnel in the giant helix is just great. If you're on the left side of the train you may actually legitimately fear for the safety of your appendages. The helix before the second lift at night is just awesome, pitch black to the fullest

Grizzly- Who the hell let that one pass clearance tests? You get crazy close to the top of the tunnel and if you have your hands up will more than likely slap the top of the tunnel.

Apollo's Chariot- Because you're moving so quickly and coming down the hill, it does give the illusion that you're going to hit it.
