Fun Spot America Discussion Thread

I realize there was already a small update on the topping off of the Skycoaster, but I was there, too! As a big Skycoaster enthusiast, it was impossible to pass up the opportunity to watch part of the process of building the 2nd tallest one in the world. And while I had to work both Saturday and Sunday, I was still able to get some great shots of the process, as well as some more progress pics of Freedom Flyer!

Saturday morning and the first section of the arch is being lifted into place!

IMG_1250.JPG.f61942a9a0178ef18802aaee2179a6fc.JPG

As expected, it took a lot of workers to get this right.

IMG_1254.JPG.29bac801797f319c18368265be5e3863.JPG

Before lifting each piece into place, tool bags are attached to the ends so the workers don't have to worry about carrying them up with them.

Moving it into place.....

This guy has a pretty important job.

IMG_1263.JPG.19b97a3ebde39bf44de2ce2037023f63.JPG

Lining up the bolt holes.

IMG_1265.JPG.a370af1a306e3beefa8e63112b16f911.JPG

Just slide it right in there.

IMG_1268.thumb.JPG.88ceed1c40f57ecf7618e9aec665b5e1.JPG

And voila!

IMG_1267.thumb.JPG.9c48b563dfd3c2ac1afa2e8d5310f302.JPG

Climbing the structure and getting ready for the next section.

IMG_1269.thumb.JPG.1057a5b5181a968883dfd7e256775530.JPG

Love the white paint!

IMG_1272.JPG.f6f4f22c76774f085a3ab2e2c6dfaed4.JPG

Here goes the base of the other side of the arch.....

IMG_1284.JPG.996e86acca734d2a839e1081d189a932.JPG

Without standing in front of it, it's really hard to grasp just how massive these sections are.

IMG_1286.JPG.493916a5950f3e3bfec9b0f25088bc72.JPG

Going up!

IMG_1288.thumb.JPG.87fef8e25c219580c768898000f4ecab.JPG

And we're vertical.

IMG_1299.thumb.JPG.098d50a7a4b230131b34b57c6b47fdcb.JPG

Getting it into place......

IMG_1303.thumb.JPG.e2f27bdb52ffe931170843ecc3e29c5e.JPG

This was all they did on Saturday because of high winds, but it's a good start!

IMG_1311.thumb.JPG.f83bf510d6527443cca7b7e21ef7ee3a.JPG

By about 10 on Sunday morning, they had already gotten this much more done!

IMG_1307.JPG.b66df79e0f1ae5c8c1911f9e7b4d17db.JPG

Any volunteers for this job?

IMG_1309.JPG.9a2bebe2d3e001d25aeb0c18da12ad15.JPG

I think it would be really hard for me to resist spitting over the edge if I were this guy.

IMG_1310.JPG.151d0c109f8ee4893043c132358507d3.JPG

Getting ready to lift the last piece into place!

IMG_1316.thumb.JPG.da6b7b5db90675bc39af9b6e66a25bbb.JPG

And there it goes!

IMG_1317.JPG.d203125a74da8695189306c45dbd4507.JPG

Yay America!

IMG_1319.JPG.33907fe15e6acd20450790f17ed7b0a9.JPG

The wind was still pretty bad this morning, but I guess it was safe enough for them to finish.

IMG_1320.JPG.2eb56f05d76226f8d14eed7b7ef91c24.JPG

Almost there.....

IMG_1321.JPG.5e391fc874ae35f71c463178863de8c1.JPG

Time to get this thing bolted into place.

IMG_1322.JPG.8d428c5d524cb1d2497126fce199063e.JPG

See how handy those tool bags are?

IMG_1324.JPG.3e5176240451dbde81ced0b2e2586ea2.JPG

"So what did you do at work today, honey?"

"Oh, nothing. Just straddled the outside of a 250 foot structure."

IMG_1325.JPG.c459dae0f7265d18ce3dfe634aaa9667.JPG

Getting everything lined up.

IMG_1326.JPG.c3d473d5b6b992524f6e741b7032d7d9.JPG

The park rented a helicopter to take aerial photos of the topping off.

IMG_1328.JPG.f61f241c88b5e30b82fd34fbabe531ca.JPG

Now it's interesting to note that the pieces weren't going to line up precisely like a jigsaw puzzle.

IMG_1331.JPG.0ddbb9c06a6613637db5cc4d1c098c40.JPG

Pretty much finished tightening down this end of the section.

IMG_1332.JPG.656a4165ac54f4ea3de8b251040da5e0.JPG

And we still have a sizable gap at the top.......

IMG_1335.JPG.8eb01030bca6cec246cc8930be11fe5e.JPG

So it's time for this guy to start climbing......

IMG_1336.JPG.2bf1695a1aae5ae6d2e337d9f5590ebb.JPG

Even though I'm pretty much not scared of heights, climbing this thing would have made me whimper like a little girl. And pee my pants.

IMG_1337.JPG.87e140fc4442aab6631049dfb76d018a.JPG

Nope. Wouldn't do it.

IMG_1338.JPG.4dc3ec94b9896fa139b581f2ebb8b1fd.JPG

Almost there!

IMG_1339.JPG.4d00df1c8208b1ca2174f378f16e3543.JPG

Made it!

IMG_1340.JPG.261116707625f75c49416f4d997cc3fe.JPG

Ok, time to get these pieces connected.

IMG_1341.JPG.4a684b211fb9587093a76ccef01cb687.JPG

This process basically included strapping a couple come-alongs to either side of the arch and winching them together.

IMG_1344.JPG.2ddb2df3251dcf833c593a31c1f63699.JPG

I bet the view was nice.......

IMG_1346.JPG.ac52f3f6f3cea0676b98e81f8a5fa216.JPG

And that will pretty much do it! At this point I had to leave to get ready for work, but I'm sure they finished up shortly thereafter.

IMG_1349.thumb.JPG.53bd85eacf2df0d5216f0b590d993315.JPG

Fast forward to Monday morning and it's done!!

IMG_1354.JPG.87a2ab66cb84a1b4bddd32c7e004be4a.JPG

But there's still work to be done......

IMG_1356.JPG.23e5d907d5a1d9f133944baa7eee8ae8.JPG

Still kinda weirds me out that they're only using one side, but it makes sense.

IMG_1362.JPG.394e2fc5134118be6ed2d1d0004aa105.JPG

This morning they were attaching the flight cables to the flight bracket. I had a slight to severe geek out watching this happen.

IMG_1347.JPG.f840f987664a2636f7cada0daf92b948.JPG

Now let's not forget about Freedom Flyer, lots of track has gone up!

IMG_1351.JPG.264122fb275cf25c2cab5512597fd18b.JPG

Some more support work has been done on White Lightning, as well!

IMG_1353.JPG.7e601656c2a4c5d8b0eaeb43eeee7a8f.JPG

Look at all that progress!

IMG_1357.JPG.49b612c623e222be2f2a096564f42163.JPG

This is what had been done so far when I arrived, but more was to come soon.......

IMG_1358.JPG.f1634e12c9cd073ca08e2a08d7462935.JPG

See? I told you.

IMG_1359.JPG.d4b6e5327a10578e172a3d8dcfb87b25.JPG

Once again, another geek out moment watching a piece of track get bolted into place.

IMG_1361.JPG.64b17cba46c917cc27900cf33b52a085.JPG

I'm no expert, but I think the process behind this was slightly less complicated and terrifying as the Skycoaster topping off.

IMG_1364.JPG.fcfa3f056a8aa9670bc6b42702473733.JPG

When in doubt, hammer it in.

IMG_1366.JPG.96b01356d49fa6282d7b251ad51ac8ea.JPG

Tightening the bolts up. The end!

Looking at their facebook page, it looks like another piece or two of track went in after I left yesterday, so they continue to get lots of work done in a very short amount of time!

This is great! I love seeing smaller parks feature quality expansions. I bet this place will become a nighttime hotspot. Next time I'm in Orlando I'm going to have to go give it a try. I have a thing for tiny wooden coasters and loved the only GCI I've been on (Thunderhead) and expect White Lightning to be a ride that is just pure fun.

Freedom Flyier is looking great! Seriously, the Vekoma Jr. Inverts are so much fun with the new trains!

I was riving down I4 today and it really took me by surprise to see a new SkyCoaster just plopped down all of a sudden. I guess I will have to get used to it!

On my way home today, I snagged a couple of night photos of the completed Skycoaster with it's awesome new lighting package! Sorry for the quality of a few of these, I shot them all with my iPhone 5, and darkness is certainly the weakness to otherwise stellar pictures iPhones are capable of taking.

I will say, while I really like the lighting package and the Skycoaster is visible from Millenia Blvd, Vineland Road's turnpike bridge, and is RIGHT in your face from Kirkman Road's bridge over I-4, I think a ground-up package might have looked a little cleaner. Also, it's kind of odd that they don't have lighting on the back tower...hopefully this will be added in the future!

The view looking through the Vekoma, plus some White Lightning bents!

skycoaster2.jpg.f555fa0a3ac0bde22dae2e2a173342f7.jpg

The view from a little past White Lightning

skycoaster3.jpg.e41f759ce4b1c742c7147ebdfb12b994.jpg

The view from the now-paved parking lot. You can literally drive right into it among all the bents and parts!

skycoaster4.jpg.311e6fef337e3a5b8e73b49ed2417a36.jpg

And last, the overview of the current park progress from just a bit up the road behind one of the strip malls. I can't wait for this park to be complete!

That skycoaster looks fantastic. I loved Fun Spot when I was there a few years ago, it's incredibly exciting to see what it's turning into now. I'm more interested in getting back there now than I am in Disney or Universal!

I'm almost 100% positive that the Sky Coaster isn't complete yet. By looking at the Arch, it seems like the ride can have two different flights going on once. Also looking at the launch tower it seems to be tilted to the left. Which means there is another launch tower that will be tilted to the right. So the reason behind the Launch Towers not having a light package yet is most likely because that area just isn't finished yet. That is unless they decide just put up one tower and only run one side of it.

This should better explain what i'm trying to say.

Found this when searching on google.

I'm pretty sure that guy said a couple pages back that the expansion to the go kart track is going to be directly over where the other tower would go, not to mention having to build a second extension to the building under the arch in order to have a second site for the launch platform. So basically, there's no way they'll ever have the second side open. Definitely looks awkward, but it makes sense.
