I find it reprehensible that the owners and other posters of this website post and post in a thread bashing a historic roller coaster that meant a lot to the community as a whole. For a website called Theme Park Review to poke fun at a historic piece of industry that this website is supposedly about is pure blasphemy. Shouldnt you people be celebrating this ride instead of stirring up trouble? This is what separates ACE and other positive groups from Theme Park Review. The fact they go to great lengths to celebrate and commemorate these coasters while representing the industry nationally is a blessing; the fact I continue to see bashing of various theme parks and rides on this site is very, very unfortunate.

What I love most about this post is that it means TPR is doing a job well done at weeding out the people who take this hobby WAAAAY too seriously and are unable to discuss this industry with an open mind and just flat out have FUN at parks!

 

Its clear from your post you know absolutely nothing about this website or our organization. Good! Keep it that way. You want to know what separates us from ACE and those other groups? We're honest!

 

We've actually had a great discussion spanning many pages about Big Bad Wolf. Even those who have disagreed with this thread, our members have maturely discussed many opinions and memories about the ride, and so far the ONLY abbrasive, obnoxious post in this thread has been yours. I think this thread shows a GREAT celebration of the ride from our members! Please point us to a similar discussion on ACE's website. Yeah, I thought so.

 

If you don't like what we have to say, don't read it. If you're happy with the coaster group you hang out with, hang out with them. Why did you even bother to post here in the first place? Honesty, I'm glad my post offended you. It amuses me! And most importantly it means you won't ever sign up for one of our trips or events and I don't have to worry about you showing up acting like an asshole.

I've been following TPR since the VHS days and I'll probably get tossed for saying this but it's comments like this that amuse ME. You tell everyone to not take things so personally and then you throw your weight around, ban some people, and take things like this too personally yourself! I love TPR but if you look back through a lot of the discussion threads like this one it's usually Robb's way (or the group of butt kissers) or the highway.

 

People need to accept that there are other feelings and opinions out there aside from yours and save everyone from sifting through 10 pages of crap in every thread! I think this site has gotten way too big and has dropped to a middle school maturity level over the past 10 years..

 

I'm sure this will be deleted soon (since its off topic even though 50% of this discussion is off topic) which will further prove my point.

I've missed the 5th coaster in visits to BG more than BBW specifically. However, back in the day I considered it an important part of what the park had to offer and very cool. More recent rides were more hit and miss but still occasionally captured me. It also did look really great, both the village section and the drop viewed from the bridge. The main continuing appeal was the back seats, there is a sort of airtime where the back car tilted up more than the others starting down the drop, due to it being weightless.

 

The loss of a mid-intensity coaster is actually quite serious and one they don't have plans to correct. It is hard to measure these things, more like a non-enthusiast having fun when they didn't really expect to, overall quality of experience vs. headlines. However the ride was becoming less effective even at that. On one of my last rides, a sudden slowdown jerk would have thrown me on the floor had it not been for the restraint.

 

One thing of interest to me is there are concepts within that ride that could be utilized. The motions could be simulated using conventional trains through special profiling of the track, especially using modern design software (in some ways this has been done with some "overbanked" turns)... also movements that an ideal suspended coaster could do but real ones can not. The pacing of a slow section followed by a fast one is rarely used and BBW's method had disadvantages, but launch technology could overcome this.

If it was a maintenance issue, so be it. Otherwise I always enjoyed it and thought it was definitely the best Arrow suspended I had ever ridden. (No Eagle's Fortress for me). The only slow part I remember was braking before the second lift. I always thought the ride hauled some pretty good ass!

I only rode it once about 10 years ago, and it seemed like a fine ride to me. I hate "top lists" because it's all opinionated. I think this quote sums it up nicely. "One man's trash is anothers treasure."

Do they teach Reading Comprehension in school anymore?? Where did Robb say it was a terrible ride? For everyone getting their panties in a wad because of this thread, the PURPOSE of it is not to trash the ride, it is to point out that it was not popular in recent years until people realized they were losing it.

I'm not going to delete this, but I will tell you that you need to have a better understanding on how we deal with a "troll" versus how we deal with our respected members. Quite frankly, your out of line and I'm sure most of our members would agree.

 

If you have been following this site for as long as you say you have, and you cannot tell the difference, well, that's not my fault.

 

First of all, 50% of this thread has not been off topic. Have you actually read this thread? Secondly, I am sick to death of people telling me that we should respect other people's opinions. Have you read this thread? The past 11 pages shows that I totally respect the opinions of our members when they can post maturely.

 

I reacted to an immature troll in the way I felt appropriate. If you don't like it, that's fine. But I ask you to either respect it or ignore it. It insults me that we could have such a great discussion and you ignore all of that, up until the troll posted, and then call me out. How about the rest of the 11 pages where we all had a perfectly good discussion even with very contrasting opinions. Do I not get ANY credit for that?

 

Elissa and I spent countless hours putting together this site where the content is mostly free. We are up to all hours of the night working in videos, putting together new site features, shooting updates, working with parks to being you the BEST trips and events out there...and you give me sh1t because I yelled at a troll? Can you see why we would be frustrated with your response?

 

Now please get back to the mature discussion. Any further crap like what I posted or you posted (and yes I know what I posted was crap) will be deleted.

He didn't - but one could easily imply from statements in his first post that he is arguing BBW was not a good ride because it's "not-even-a-top-100-coaster" and "[he is] not sure [he] ever once heard someone say that ride would have been a dealbreaker for going to that park." Simple statements that could be interpreted several ways. I'm not Robb but I think his point is simply that BBW was an old ride and in the eyes of the general public not a popular ride. I think that's a fair assessment. People didn't raise a fuss until BG announced the ride was going away.

 

This whole thing reminds me of when SFGAm announced they were going to get rid of the Whizzer about 5 years back. The Whizzer is the last operating Schawrzkopf Speedracer in the US and one of only two left in the world. The circumstances were similar. High maintenance, not a popular ride, etc. However, the public outcry was huge and the ride stands today (ironically, the first Arrow mega-looper Shockwave got the axe). The Speedracer is closer to death than the Arrow suspended, but both are nearing extinction.

 

I'm personally waiting for Robb to start the "Let's be honest here ... Flashback (SFMM) wasn't THAT amazing ..." thread.

^ Thank you for that! The point of this thread was to have a discussion about a subject I at least found interesting, and apparently based on the response to far, other people feel the same way.

 

Trouble is, while we have a lot of people who can discuss a subject maturely, there are others who will just take things too personally, too seriously, and are unable to respond without getting bent out of shape.

 

I honestly think this thread has been GREAT! I wish I could come up with topics like this more often that would generate this much good discussion.

I grew up in Houston and when we got X-LR8 it was a pretty big deal. It was a very fun ride especially at night, but it did seem to not age very well. Still, it was a "thrilling" ride for some that were not into the bigger or looping rides in the park.

 

That being said, I have also ridden Iron Dragon and Top Gun and believe both of them beat it, with Top Gun taking first place. The thing that intrigued me from what i read/saw about BBW was the close flybys and the drop along the water. Certainly not enough to keep me from visiting the park in the future (Nessie being another ride there i would love to ride for the historical aspect), but sure it would have been fun to get to ride it just once.

BBW was pretty cool. I totally like Arrow stuff anyway though, and the suspended concept as well. NIght ERT was fun on it. I also sort of saw it as a BGE "staple" (even though I was only at the park once).

 

But riding Vortex at Canada's Wonderland this past fall totally blew any memory of BBW away.

Totally agree with the original post. BBW was a nice thing to do on a visit to BGW, but it was never a re-ride for me. I'd ride it once every time I'd visit because of the novelty of the ride type, theming and location. But I only ever rode it more than once in a day on my last visit before it closed. I do miss it, no question, but not because it was a mind blower in any way. Mostly because removing it reduced the big coasters there by 20% and as a season pass holder, I never want to think I'm getting less for my money. This year, I got a little less than last year. Simple as that. However, if getting rid of it means getting this drop tower next season and something as big and innovative as they seem to be promising for 2012, then I'm okay with the trade off.

I will chime in as a local.

My first ride was in 1987 (7 years old) and it blew me away just seeing it cause it was so unique at the time.

I admit that over the last decade of its life I did not ride it nearly as much as the other coasters at BGW but alot changed in 2008 when my son could ride it at 4 years old. We would marathon on it every time we went, even when the line was over an hour. To hear his laughter and enthusiasm really brought back the magic of riding big coasters for the first time when I was a kid.

He was very upset when I told him his favorite coaster was being torn down but we went its last weekend and had a good marathon on it and got some pics and souvenirs and he still randomly says that he misses it to this day.

 

So The ride really means a lot to me as a coaster lover and a father for those reasons.

I know why they took it out and understand their decision though. I will go back when they build the new coaster though and hopefully my son will be tall enough to ride the B&Ms.
