My complete set of wooden roller coasters as of 2010. I know I have the "clichéd" Voyage as my #1, but I feel its the best wooden roller coaster I have ridden to date. I enjoyed the sensation of speed, good air, and direction changes despite being a rough ride, I was only able to ride it about 4 times this summer. It was very intense and definitely impressed me on my first ride! The majority of my top 10 wooden coasters are GCIs, as I am also quite the GCI fanboy. I enjoy their good pacing, multiple changes in direction, and decent floater air. I'm sure that after this next year I'll have more to write home about and I'll add El Toro, Boulderdash, and more to top of my list.

I found Voyage to be MUCH better on the Raven train than it's own original train. On it's own train the ride was BRUTAL, having me constantly readjust my spine, especially after the turnaround. However, on the Raven train it was like riding a totally different ride, although still nowhere near good enough to break into my top 5.

If people rode it last year and still claim that it "wasn't rough", then either they're hard or the only other woodies they've been on are at Kings Dominion!

Here's mine. This year I rode for the first time one of my favorites (El Toro) and one of my least favorites (Coaster Express).

I tend to rate Hell Cat (Avalanche) in Wisconsin much higher than most. I had some fantastic front-seat rides on it back in 2006. I also rate Lightning Racers lower than most. The ride just didn't do that much for me. I rode Kingdom Coaster for the first time and found it to be a surprisingly fun/peppy ride although it still ranks fairly low.

Giant Dipper is my favorite woodie for a few reasons! First it is a classic layout that is very enjoyable! Second it has lots of ejector airtime in the front! Third is that the tunnel at the beginning is one that few coasters can match. Fourth is that it has the perfect amount of roughness for me. Fifth is that it has a FANTASTIC view of the ocean and the rest of the Boardwalk. Termy is really close since I love the speed and out of control feeling, but not good enough to be better than Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz.

On the topic of roughness, I like a wooden coaster that is rough. I like one rough enough to bounce you around in your seat, but not enough to hurt you or give you a bad headache.

My list is wildly different this year, not because I rode a bunch of new stuff, but because what I like in a wood coaster is undergoing some changes. Things that I used to find nearly mandatory for a "good" coaster are slipping and things that I didn't used to hold in high regard are becoming necessities for me to get back in line for another ride. Go figger.

Boardwalk Bullet dropped several places this year, not because of the reasons above, but because it has given much more consistent rides lately. Let me 'splain: in its early years, BB was famously temperamental. One day the ride would be slow, boring, and incredibly brutal. A few days later, it would be smoother, insanely intense, and easily a top-three ride. I based my ranking on those very, very good rides, since they stood out in my mind much more than the crappy rides did. This year (or rather 2010), a lot of the issues that caused the wild variances were addressed and it became much more reliable and found a "happy medium". You didn't get the "barely make it back to the brake run" rides, but you also didn't get the top-tier rides anymore, either. I still really like the ride, but I no longer go down there as often as I used to, because I know I'm not going to be blown away anymore by the ride.

Well I haven't ridden too many qooden coasters (less than I would have liked to), but of the ones I have:

Rode El Toro for the first time this year. That toook number two, no competition. I was torn between the rough as hell Cyclone, which provided some insane airtime, or the tame and not so Wild One.

For my bottom three Roar sucks. End of discussion. As for "The Grizzly" it freaking killed me to place it so far down, but it was pretty craptacular when I rode it this year. Finally, Hurler is last. I hope it catches fire this offseason.

I rode BB in it's early years, and got one of those brutal, rough rides. I then rode it this year and it wasn't quite as intense, but it was pretty smooth. I think that the Bullet, in its current state, is probably the best fit for the park which draws more families than anyone else. Do you agree that even though it isn't as intense, Kemah is better off with Boardwalk Bullet running the way it does now?

I only rode 5 wood coasters in 2010 (counting the Efteling one as 2 coasters), though four of them were new to me.

Joris was good for what it was. Robin Hood at Walibi World found new ways to torment my spine, it robs from the rider and gives to the chiropractor. Gwazi Lion was pretty rough and uninspiring though a little better at night, Tiger was down (or was that the other way around?).

Boardwalk Bullet dropped several places this year, not because of the reasons above, but because it has given much more consistent rides lately. Let me 'splain: in its early years, BB was famously temperamental. One day the ride would be slow, boring, and incredibly brutal. A few days later, it would be smoother, insanely intense, and easily a top-three ride.

I rode BB in it's early years, and got one of those brutal, rough rides. I then rode it this year and it wasn't quite as intense, but it was pretty smooth. I think that the Bullet, in its current state, is probably the best fit for the park which draws more families than anyone else. Do you agree that even though it isn't as intense, Kemah is better off with Boardwalk Bullet running the way it does now?

Having ridden every Boardwalk Bullet version...I feel like I can chime in. For the park, it IS best for the park in it's current state. They finally, with the latest retracking, did something right as the ride is pretty consistent and STAYED smooth.

Agreed, it's the perfect fit for the park now... but that leaves the Houston area without a badass coaster experience again.

Of my 700+ rides on it, only about 40 have been in the last year since they "fixed" it. Meh.

Boardwalk Bullet was, well 'moody' for TPR during the Texas trip haha. At night when it opened after the storm, it was rough as hell.

Next morning for ERT, I rode for the whole hour! Awesome ride.

^^Really? I thought it was equally brutal both times. That ride is INSANE and has so much potential to be amazing, but it was just so rough and painful that it's sitting somewhere around Mean Streak and Son of Beast on my list; had it been smoother it'd probably be up with Ravine Flyer and Voyage.

I'm just surprised I rode 31 woodies in 2010, 28 new. There are only 4 woodies in my count that I didn't ride in 2010.
