What coaster should get the next Rocky Mountain treatment?

Recommended Posts

I need to change my underwear now. I really hope this hybrid deal pans out and is used to resurrect more woodies that could use some love.

What woodies do you think need this "Rocky Mountain Coaster" treatment? Post them here!

MOD EDIT: I broke this into a separate topic to not detract from the happenings at SFoT.

Yes there are lots of woodies that can use this "kind of love!" Maybe they could be ride able again. The first one to come to mind is Mean Streak at Cedar Point. It's been unride-able for years...

If this project turns out to be a huge success, then I can easily see a bright future for Rocky Mountain Coasters. I won't call it a gamble, but I think they might be trying to push the extremes a bit early with this new technology and insane layout. Either way, I guess we all shall find out soon enough.

If this project works out well, the entire industry will change almost overnight.

While some parks might not be able to invest the time and money for a massive makeover like this, the "topper track" option could resurrect aging woodies better than Viagra. (sorry)

Anyway, there are lots of wood coasters out there with layouts that are exciting already, and don't need a full-scale re-imagining, they just need to run consistently and well. Those are perfect candidates for topper track.

Boardwalk Bullet comes to mind immediately, as well as KD's Grizzly and even KI's Beast. Can you imagine if they tracked Beast with steel top rails, thereby removing the high maintenance problem, and ran it trim-free again? Night rides would be unbelieeeeeeeeeeeeevable!

Also, the extreme nature of the Giant layout could also result in some really interesting new coasters that are designed from the ground up with this kind of technology in mind. I don't see any reason that we won't see a 100% steel coaster with loops and other inversions built with this kind of track, offering a steelie type layout with woodie type trains. I'd LOVE to see a Magnum-style hyper or a S:KC style looper running killer trains like Giant is getting (OK, maybe without the horns)

^ If you had ridden KD's Grizzly this summer, you would maybe retract that statement. (Sorry for the "KD Fanboy" defense)

I totally agree with what you've said in many aspects.

Cedar Fair will invest this on a few of its coasters I hope.

The topper track would work great on Ghostrider, Hurlers, and Wolverine Wildcat,.. While...

rides like Son of Beast and Mean Streak would get the Iron Horse!

And when we were at the booth, I did hear the word "Rattler" being thrown around a lot. I also asked Alan about Colossus and he smiled. But then again maybe he just likes that ride a lot?

Whenever I hear or ride Collossus (I'll be there this weekend) , I think of the movie National Lampoon Vacation and Wally World

^^I'd love to see the Rattler get a Topper Track/Iron Horse treatment. I heard in it's glory days that it was a fantastic coaster, but with the drop adjustments, helix adjustments and all the other things, I heard it really neutered the ride. Albeit fun, it is incredibly rough and I mean, come on, the infamous bend? That would be another good reason. And living several hours from it is another good reason

I think this is a hard call as to which ride should get the 'treatment' next. If we're just retracking with the steel rails I would say Ghostrider as it already has a great layout and I'd love to bring it back to its glory days. Hades as well. Basically take any rough, unrideable but solid ride and make it fun again! If we're talking this crazy balls out completely new layout just keeping some basics, heck bring it to almost all of the mediocre woodies out there!

^I'm still pissed off that the smoke detectors around Mean Streak were working....

LOL,I'm still pissed off that CP got all the coaster fires this season as hurler ranks up there with the need for a torch light party as well.

Perhaps RMC can work wonders on hurler though, assuming that the TG rehab is a success.

Personally, though, I really think we should wait and ride Texas Giant...what if this treatment turns out to be a bust? I'm placing bets that it's going to be awesome, but what if that turns out not to be the case?

That is a good point. I suppose there is a slim chance that the ride could end up feeling more like Colossus at SFMM...you know that feeling of riding a wooden coaster on I-Beam Track!

Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst!

I couldn't agree more.

As in the case of son of beast, I would just rather see the ride go. After the loop was removed, the ride was just left with a boring layout. The ride has such a bad reputation, I don't know if it could ever recover from that. I am sure the track replacement can't be cheap. They could build a new coaster for what?....7-8 million?

This reaction from Alan excites me. If this technology works. And I seriously hope it will. I would love to see Colossus get this treatment and restore it back to it's original layout. Perhaps with a few surprises added in for good measure. Like 10+ feet to the lift hill, steeper drops into some double & tripple ups, maybe a little bankage or overbankage to the turnarounds. I think turning it into a mobius strip would be interesting as well. I would love a helix of death, but I think that's wishful thinking. But still, a grin from Alan pleases me greatly, and Colussus's 35th anniversary is just around tha bend.

My only issue with Colossus is that it's pretty much become a giant kiddie coaster. Its original configuration was insane (and I did ride it like that), but was obviously not safe given the fatality that resulted. This new track style could indeed give some new life to Colossus, even if not exactly original. Some interesting things could be done.

Son of Beast, Rattler, Mean Streak, Hades, and Ghostrider are all rides that seem like the obvious coasters that everyone would like to see rebuilt with new topper track/iron horse treatment but heres a dark horse candidate: The Beast.

Now before all the Kings Island fan boys stone me to death (I kinda am one honestly)just hear me out. The Beast is a ride that I used to absolutely love and still do but its honestly not the same ride it once was. Maybe its the re-tracking, maybe its the magnetic trims brakes whatever the reason its a ride that isn't as god as it used to be. But imagine if they could raise the lift and drop heights 10 feet or so, make a steeper drop, add in some crazy air time hills and banked turns over the course or of the existing first 1/3 of the ride, remove the second long brake shed so it maintains its insane speed until the second lift hill, then completely rework the final double helix finale. Have steeper initial drop into the flat entrance of the existing helix, then after the two all new over banked helix rotations have the trains dive back down into the the woods for a second finale before the brake run. It could also add a few hundred feet of track length to the ride and maybe have the Beast retake the longest coaster in the world title, while also restoring some quality to a ride that has lost a lot of its luster over the years. Just a crazy idea but I'd rather see The Beast get the treatment than the Son of Beast.
