Apart from being a huge metalhead, I also really enjoy classical music. Not sure how that works, but whatever. Anyway, on Saturday, a friend and I saw the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra perform Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony. I was pleasantly surprised with how good the orchestra actually was. They definitely exceeded my expectations. And since it was a relatively cheap night, I'd probably go back and see them again.

Last night, I ventured forth to the briny deeps of Toronto to see Alestorm and Piratefest 2015! Alestorm is one of those bands that I will never miss, so of course I was there. As luck would have it, they brought two other pirate metal bands along for the ride, The Dread Crew of Oddwood and Swashbuckle.

 

The Dread Crew of Oddwood did a great and very fun set. They weren't so much "metal", but as they put it "heavy mahogany". All of their instruments were acoustic and included an upright bass and harpsichord. The atmosphere was more of a party than a concert.

 

Swashbuckle on the other hand is the complete opposite. While Dread Crew was softer, Swashbuckle was balls to the wall fast and loud. They have a great sense of humour which really shows through in their act. I mean...their lead singer is named Admiral No-Beard when in fact, he has a monster beard.

 

Alestorm was as always, fantastic. They played a good number of songs off their new album, but mixed it up with some older stuff, dating all the way back to their demos. The crowd was also ready and pumped for a good time and really came alive. During "Nancy the Tavern Wench" (seriously), the entire crowd sits down and rows. Don't ask me why, I don't know. I just go along for the ride. Also, at the end of the show, the lead singer started crowdsurfing, yelling "carry me to the bar!". And so...he was carried to the bar. I love this band so much and can't wait to inevitably see them again.

After what felt like forever since I went to a concert (even though it was only a month and a half), I made my way to Toronto on Thursday night to see Enslaved. In support were Yob, Ecstatic Vision and Kosmograd.

 

Kosmograd is a local band from Toronto who put on a surprising set. Their entire 30 minute set was played in one unbroken song. It was unique and allowed their flow to stay intact without being broken up with songs ending. They seamlessly went from one song to another.

 

Up next was Ecstatic Vision, a relatively new band (I guess? They don't have any albums that I could find) out of Philadelphia. Their sound was equal parts old school and psychedelic. And holy crap, they played a melodica! I've seen all sorts of wacky instruments being played before, but this was the first time I've seen a melodica. Hurray for being different!

 

Yob followed with one of the best sets I've ever seen. I'm not normally a fan of doom/sludge metal, but holy crap. Their music was simply beautiful to listen to. There are few times in life where you experience a moment of pure contentment. That set was one of them. Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed them.

 

Enslaved finished off the night with an hour and a half of great melodic black metal. The entire band was really into the performance, interacting with the crowd which served to whip things up into a frenzy. I didn't know too much about them before tonight (I figured I'd give them a chance), but they definitely made me a fan.

Got Download Festival coming up in June. Aside for the, I haven't got any other shows planned, though I've got fingers crossed for a Babymetal EU tour around Oct/Nov.

They're doing a "world tour" starting in May. There aren't a whole lot of dates, but they are going through Europe. I'll be at the Toronto show.

Saw Brit Floyd (Pink Floyd tribute band) on Tuesday night and Belle & Sebastian Wednesday night - both in Toronto.

 

I would highly recommend Brit Floyd to any die hard Pink Floyd fan - their stage set was amazing and they are definitely as close to seeing the real band as you're going to get!

 

Belle & Sebastian were awesome - just as I expected. It continues to amaze me that this Scottish band isn't more popular in the states...although if I look at the Billboard Top 40, I know why. Most Americans seem to like shitty music!

Last concert was NIN, Soundgarden, and The Dillinger Escape Plan in West Palm. All the bands sounded awesome. This was the first time I saw TDEP plan without massive pits all over the place.

 

My next show is Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson in Atlanta.

 

I'm still waiting on Failure to release their tour dates. I'm so glad those guys are back together.

Misery Index/Lord Dying at the Palladium. The local openers were absolutely horrible, attendance was dismal (<50 people in a fairly large city), and Lord Dying put on a very solid show but had to stop early because their drummer blew out the head of his snare (fist-sized hole, there was no salvaging it) and couldn't borrow one in time. Nonetheless, Misery Index was utterly amazing and played their hearts out to the people who were there. So unbelievably intense and tight, and the setlist was pretty much immaculate save for maybe the absences of Sensory Deprivation and Heirs to Thievery, but the fact that they dug up Ghosts of Catalonia and played the entire Faust suite more than made up for it. My only real issue was that the show had to end, and I hope that they go back to regular touring soon.

I attended some of RoSFest this weekend. Spock's Beard and Enchant were both amazing. I'd seen both bands before many times, but they were at the top of their game here.

 

I also caught Glass Hammer's set, and thought they were just "ok". Nothing really stuck out about them.

I went to DC101's Kerfuffle at Merriweather Post Pavilion with a buddy of mine on Sunday, and it's safe to say it was the best concert I've been to. Not only was the line up great and I got to see my favorite band, but the vibe all around was amazing. Everyone around us was chill, having a good time and we made some friends in the process. As for the acts we saw:

 

Andrew McMahon and The Wilderness-Not bad, had a few good songs but around this time my friend and I were just chatting with other people around us on the lawn.

 

Big Data-Same as above.

 

Dirty Heads-I like these guys as they had a Sublime/311 vibe to their music. They played "Lay Me Down" which I was looking forward to the most, so I was satisfied with their set.

 

Panic! At The Disco-If this was ten years ago, I probably wouldn't care if we missed these guys. However I've grown to appreciate them over the past few years. Now that I've seen them live, I have a lot more respect for them, and they did a fantastic cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody".

 

The Offspring-Can't express how awesome this band is. I still remember listening to these guys on my friends radio back in middle school when we would skate in his drive-way. This was the only band the entire day that had people moshing and crowdsurfing which was a lot of fun.

 

Incubus-The headliners of the show and my favorite band, no matter how much their music changes. They played a great set for about an hour. During their song "Dig" a fight broke out in the pit and the singer, Brandon cracked jokes about it after the song lol.This was my first time seeing them and it won't be my last. Hopefully I'll catch them this summer with Deftones (Another one of my favorite bands).

Paramore. Last night in NYC at Beacon Theatre. My bangover from the show is ridiculous but they were perfect.

 

'Future' live is now my all time favorite live song, and it's even better than the studio version.

I went to see Enchant/Odin's Court/Mindmaze in Baltimore last week. Mindmaze was the only band I had never seen before, and they were really good. OC and Enchant put on their usual amazing shows. Was disappointed with the crowd, as Enchant has never played in Baltimore before, and rarely plays on the East coast, so you would think more people would have made an effort to come out, even if it was a Wednesday night.

I know most younger enthusiasts are not into him (or maybe never even heard of him), but we went and saw John Mellencamp last weekend in Buffalo at Shea's Theater.

 

Great, tight set of most of his old classics from the 80's as well as some stuff from the new album. The bluesy stuff that he did was also very well done!

Cryptopsy/Disgorge/Erimha/Soreption/The Convalescence at Ralph's in Worcester. Ralph's is an awesome venue and I was stoked as hell for this show. My friends in Parasitic Extirpation opened and did an awesome job like always (even if Chris was having some technical problems). On the other hand, The Convalescence was unbelievably awful. They DID NOT belong on that bill and absolutely no one liked them. One of the worst bands I've ever seen on a tour package; they were so bad that I left after one song, sat downstairs, and left the building shortly after that because I could still hear them, which wasn't acceptable. Walked to a convenience store to grab a Monster and a candy bar; by the time I came back, they were done and Soreption was setting up. Soreption was tight and their guitarist was ridiculously good, but their vocalist sounded like he was constantly out of breath and carried himself like Robb Flynn circa 1995, which was annoying. Didn't care for Erimha and sat them out; thankfully, the main attractions delivered. Both were ridiculously tight and engaging, and Flo Mounier may actually be one of the best live drummers that I've ever seen. Wasn't a fan of McGachy's vocals, but he had solid stage presence and knew how to work the crowd. All in all, it was a great night.

my review:

 

The Judas Priest show was great (despite not caring much for the opening band -- Texas Hippie Coalition (seen worse, but wouldn't have minded better).

 

It's amazing how great Halford still sounds, hitting every high note! Odd that he let the audience sing most of the refrains, as he wasn't doing it to save his voice, I guess he just wanted the fans to sing?

 

some observations:

 

1) the arena (not a huge one) was only about 1/2 full (and the floor GA tix even less. . maybe a 1/3rd full, tho those at the front were really enthusiastic)

 

2) Halford must have slept funny or just didn't stretch before the show. . or something. . as he was doing this BIZARRE "pregnant Chicken strut" (it's the only way I can describe it) for the first 7 or so songs.

 

He loosened up and got into it about 1/2 way thru the set, but it was so strange watching him slowly strut back and forth across the front of the stage from the two "spritz" fans on either side.

 

by the time he rode out on the bike for "Hellbent for Leather" he was ready to rock!

 

3) it was COLD in there. . not sure if they keep it that cold to keep the band comfortable (since they are in head to toe leather), and as noted Halford did enjoy the misters on either side of the stage quite a bit. . . . or if it was just cold because of the smallish crowd?

 

4) it really was kind of like a Cher show. . Halford would pop behind a curtain towards the end of a song, and then start the next song behind the curtain -- and then strut out in a new leather outfit (LOL). Sounded great, but the costume changes were some cheezy fun.

 

5) the Guitar solo? it was in the middle of the 1st encore song. Don't think I've ever seen that before in a metal show. (the idiots "moshing" on the floor either . . they paid $60 to spend the whole show running in a circle beating each other instead of watching the band???)

I used to LOVE Judas Priest and Iron Maiden - two of my favorite bands growing up that I have never seen in concert.

 

Would love to go see either one sometime, but the partner (at 72) is not into heavy metal of any kind.

So yea plain and simple, UMF will always be my favorite no matter what anyone says and this will always be my favorite genre of music!

Last night - Bette Midler in Concert

 

It was great. All the favourites for the audience, mainly as the encores.

 

Several numbers from her new cd "It's The Girls".

Good old Sophie Tucker jokes.

 

Local jokes made, pretty spot on. A few 'serious songs' like Leonard Cohen's

"Everybody Knows". Intense with most of them, but we got them, and enjoyed.

 

And she closed with "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" - her first hit to start her career.

Train and The Fray at the Hollywood Bowl on May 24th!

Joe Bonamassa on May 8th, as part of a 90% sold-out crowd at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland. While he is a polarizing artist, I was admittedly astounded by the recording of his "Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks" performance, so I started out with a fairly favorable impression. On this tour he is focusing mainly on his new, original material, so he didn't show off as much of a traditional blues influence as I always hope for (but wasn't expecting in this case), though of course there were plenty of tasty blues licks woven into his neverending solos. However, I am partial to the song he opened with (after an instrumental Hendrix cover), "Oh Beautiful!", a simple masterpiece. He mixed in some rockin' tunes, and was predictably mesmerizing to watch throughout the show.

 

The one song that justified my ticket purchase was "Trouble Town," off his latest album, "Different Shades of Blue." He started off with an exquisite, extended slide intro straight out of my dreams. Unfortunately, this isn't part of the album cut, which has a markedly different feel and also omits the energetic percussion break. If I hadn't seen it live, I would've never fallen for it. However, the song itself, with its deliciously ear-catching riff, also had me captivated.

 

All in all, I got a sense of why some people criticize Joe, and not every song was to my taste, but it was a very professional, high-quality performance. Personally, I feel he has a great voice to go along with his amazing guitar skills, and while nothing profound for the most part, I think his songwriting is a bit more artful than people give him credit for.

 

Incidentally, this was my second concert in a row where we celebrated a guitarist's birthday!
