Halloween Horror Nights 20 - Opening Weekend MEGA THREAD!

Recommended Posts

Crazy! I've only been to the HHN in Hollywood but Orlando's looks insane!

As someone who has gone to the event on both coasts for many years, I can say this:

HHN Hollywood is extremely well-done and tons of fun.

HHN Orlando sets the bar and really is the best Halloween event in the nation. It's the best of the best!!! I couldn't recommend it more. Go. Now.

Reed- thanks for the review. It's always helpful to know which houses are worth waiting for, if you have to make some tough decisions. I was in no way excited about the premise of Havoc and it sounds like the house is just as disappointing.

I'll be there one week from today!

Really quick report here!

I had to work my regular job last night and didn't think I'd have enough time to make it to HHN. But I arrived at the gates around 1045pm and was able to hit 7of the 8 houses by midnight! Light crowds and perfect weather helped (as well as running from house to house!) The houses were good and there were some neat effects, but none of them really blew me away.

Again, I was doing the "credit whore" tour of HHN so that could account for it. The Hades houses seemed to be in the worst shape with many of the carved set pieces broken by aggressive guests. It looks like the sets were carved out of styrofoam and then sprayed with grey paint. But you could see parts broken off and the white styrofoam sticking out.

One of the houses featured bird like creatures who reminded me of Spy vs. Spy from Mad Magazine. Not really scary in my book.

I will be going back to see Bill and Ted's and get that 8th credit. Also, I hope to get there when it opens so I can really see what some of the outside scare zones look like. The muerte one was cool but I felt it was too dark especially with all the bold paint colors in it.

The Ghost house was by far the best. Great scenery and very cool effects. My all time fav is still the one where they had the 2 story theater balcony illusion.

I went again last night and it seemed like the event took a step down. There really weren't very many scares... At first I just assumed that I had just gotten used to the layouts of the houses and the scare factor went away, but then I realized that none of the scareactors were really popping out.

-Legendary Truth was still awesome, and we noticed some effects that we didn't see last time. But the ending of this house is very anticlimactic and boring. PLEASE make the ending scary Universal! 3 out of 4 times we went through there was only one scareactor in the last 30 seconds; they didn't attempt to scare anyone and the glowing costume could be seen from a far distance.

-Hades got even better IMO. There are a ton of scares in this house and the minotaur effect gets me every time! I can't figure out how they do it. However, John is right about the sets. They are getting a little torn up especially the facade.

-Catacombs- still one of my favorites and I love the ending, but there seemed to be fewer scareactors in the house.

-Havoc- I actually really enjoyed this house a lot more than last time, and they increased the amount of scares!

-All the other houses got less scary, it was fairly disappointing. Psychoscarapy was just plain bad last night, there scareactors just did not seem motivated... Though the house was literally a walk-on for most of the night so you can't really blame them.

The scarezones were the same except for Saws and Steam - they must have turned off a few fog machines!

I saw one of the Brian Brushwood shows... and I agree with Adam, do not waste your time with these. I have never heard of him before HHN and I don't really understand what he is. If he's a magician, then why doesn't he do magic? Aside from that he's pretty annoying to listen to. Some of the audience started booing half way through

Very annoying that the event hasn't even been going on for a full week before set pieces are getting destroyed.

Would someone mind explaining me some of the effects being used in the LT house either through spoiler tags or PM? I am really curious what they are doing to make this house so innovative.

^ She was actually really good and talkitive. I was about to take her picture, and she said "wait, I want to give you a different picture!" and she came right up to the camera like she did in the picture. She liked to cling to Jack though.

Just got back from another solid night at HHN...wasn't planning on going but my friend convinced me to go. I am heading back on sunday with some people who have never been, so that should be pretty fun. Saw the Menace part of the magic show and was not to impressed. Maybe Malice or what ever the other one is called will be better. I have now done all the houses twice, and I got to experience a ton more in Hades. I Still think Legendary Truth, Hades, and Hallowed past are my top three favorite.

I also liked how towards the end of the night when the lines were virtually non-existant they started breaking us up into smaller groups. Was much better that way!

Question: Is Rip Ride Rocket still down for "annual maintainence"?

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the advice Tyler, we attended this past Sunday with the add-on ticket that allows you to enter the studios park at 2 then stay in the courtyard by Finnegans while they change over the park for the event. We were able to get through Legendary Truth and Hades before 6:00, then had the 20th anniversary house, Catacombs, Orphanage, and Zombiegeddon done before 7:15 without express passes.

We had a good time even though the event felt very average this year to me. A few good houses and a lot of average houses, and the Bill and Ted Show was awful. It seems like every year this event gets very mixed reviews the opinions of the enthusiasts community to the general public. Everything I've read on TPR and other review sites about HHNXX was that it is a little down this year, but all the reviews from non enthusiasts friends I have and other "non enthusiasts media" says that this year is one of the best reviewed, scariests, and best years ever. It's funny because every year the houses that I like and the houses that are a consensus TPR favorite aren't necessarily a public favorite. And also every year for me there is a house that I really like that the public and TPR will find not as good. I understand everyone has their opinion and thats fine but I also find it interesting that there is never a consensus overall #1 BCS champion kinda favorite house from the opinions of coaster enthusiasts, HHN enthusiasts, and general public alike. Just an observation, but I guess its a god thing that everyone can find something from the event every year that they like.

Ross- a "very average year" is a very accurate way of describing HHN XX. Sounds like you felt just about the same way as I did. It's always tons of fun but they definitely didn't break any new boundaries.

And, yes, being in the park for the switch-over makes ALL the difference in seeing everything without Express.

So, we just got home from our first ever HHN weekend! We were there on Friday the 29th, and used our Stay and Scream tix to wait in the area back by E.T.. I was totally shocked that we got 5 of the houses done before it even got dark! Boom boom boom, one to the next. We had a great time, but it was different than I expected. The fun factor may have been effected by the fact that we had been up since 5:30 am. That morning was the last day of our cruise, so we had to get up, disembark, get to our hotel, check-in, leave our bags cuz our room wasn't ready, then head straight to the park... by midnight, we were both reeeeeally dragging. I think the event is a great idea, but I also noticed the crowds get a little rowdy and definitely non "family atmosphere" like. Of course, I know that it is NOT marketed towards families, but here are a list of things I saw that suprised, or even shocked me:

1) Zombie bartender betches screaming at people to buy their alcohol. Quote "Jeezus Kreiiist, people, it's Halloween Horror Nights! Buy some shots!!! Goddammit, you are all so boring!"

2) Line jumping allllllll over the place in the Mummy line.

3) People having full-on sex in the handicapped stall of the men's bathroom. (I ALMOST made a video, but I decided that would be un-polite )

4) I swear I saw two guys smoking crack/meth in the line for Simpsons. I sh-t you not!

Is that what it's always like?

Pretty much. HHN attracts some real drunken idiots. In one maze this year, a woman behind me kept falling over and grabbing onto me to break her fall. It happened like 20 times. I was ready to brain her.
