^I've seen enough scrap metal to last a lifetime in the last 2 months. Here in Cleveland, they've torn down a huge steel plant that was LTV Steel and get this, they're putting in a mall.

My best friend's father from grade school worked at LTV Steel for over 20 years. When it went under, he lost everything. No pension, 401K, nothing. Cleveland is really going down hill. One reason I want to move to Vermilion and not near Cleveland.

I never went on it because I heard a rumor there was a death on the ride when two cars collided. Anyone know if this actually happened or if it was just a rumor?

I remember back in the 80's there was an incident at the one in Chicago where the car went up the shaft but did not move forward at the top. It then dropped straight down, injuring the 4 riders.

They closed all the Intamin FreeFalls until they could figure out why it malfuctioned. I think I remember cutting out an article about it when it happened. The next time I am home in Cleveland, I will look for it.

SANDUSKY - Cedar Point wants to drop one of its signature rides from

its lineup.

Park spokesman Bryan Edwards confirmed Monday the 131-foot-tall Demon

Drop is for sale.

"By clearing out that land, it could give us additional land for

improvement projects," although nothing is in the works for that

property, Edwards said.

"If we can sell it, we will sell," he said. "If not, we will keep it."

Edwards didn't have the asking price for the free-fall ride, but said

that wouldn't be something the park would reveal anyway. The ride is

being advertised throughout the amusement park industry.

The Demon Drop, off the Main Midway in the front of the park, was built

for $2.5 million in 1983. Since that year, it has given 16 million

rides. Last year, it gave more than 600,000 rides.

Although Cedar Point's newer 300-foot-tall free-fall ride, Power Tower,

is comparable to the Demon Drop, Edwards said the carriage on the Demon

Drop is pulled down by gravity at speeds of 55 mph. The Power Tower is

propelled by compressed air -- either up or down -- at 60 mph.

Last year, there were more than 2.1 million rides on the Power Tower.

The Power Tower has four towers with the capacity of 12 riders on each.

The Demon Drop has one tower for four riders.

"It is still a good thrill ride," Edwards said. "It is the step before

the Power Tower. You start on the Demon Drop and work your way up."

Without the Demon Drop, Cedar Point will have 67 rides, including 16

roller coasters. Sandusky didn't have any record of recent building

plans filed by Cedar Point, according to the city.

Edwards said the Demon Drop will continue to operate while it is for

sale.

DEMON DATA

Height of Tower: 131 feet from top to bottom

Length of Drop: 99 feet (10 stories)

Free Fall Drop: 60 feet

Drop Time: 2.5 seconds

I was the lead for a year at the one at SFOT. Yes they now have antiroll backs all the way up the lift. Blowbacks were always a problem when the wind was blowing from the SE. The tires at the top could not move the car from the lift to the free fall position so we would have to run up there push it out ourselves.

I actually say 2 cars hit twice while I was there. Both times was because the motor that regulated the speed when the car was being uprighted went out so the car would come down extremely fast. E-stoping the ride wouldn't help at all either. Once the car is uprighted it moves freely most of the way to the station till it hits the tires to slow it down. Unfortunately when the motor goes out like that, they are no help and BAM. Never any serious injury thank god.

TAER it down!

// all in the name of progress.

I. It's a fun ride, but it really is a maintenance nightmare. That thing gives CP a lot more trouble than a lot of people realize. Not to mention, I have faith that they'll replace it with something that won't disappoint.
