Photo TR: Six Flags Great America - Opening Day 4/3/2009

After a loooong winter, we were quite excited to get back on a coaster. SFGam opened about 2 weeks earlier than usual so we were quite excited about riding the rides in our winter gear. Enjoy the pictures!

entrance.jpg.414942bfa41ceee93c36c06d15592e6b.jpg

Its 50 degrees and sunny, a beautiful day to visit SFGam!

midway.jpg.10466a5b217641b89424667952edd68e.jpg

I was expecting light crowds but I never thought there would be this few people.

2082365413_Supermanque.jpg.26e984d6e0e8852449ba9820c7fe4e82.jpg

We decided our first coaster of 2009 would be Superman. We rode 3 times without getting off, what a way to start the day.

704057100_supermantwist.jpg.b1cfead2965b32f6ad1adb2ab48accb6.jpg

Some people call this an inline twist, but I like to call this particular element "too little, too late".

1386929343_bullmidway2.jpg.6e4aa35d256bad48d252707926fa1343.jpg

Next, we fought our way through the crowds to Raging Bull.

1498959881_bullque.jpg.d82d265dc80059b4795ad55a5e7855c9.jpg

Looking back at this photo really makes me look forward to ERT on TPR day at SFGam. After 9 straight rides we stepped off feeling a bit dizzy.

759087801_batmanstation.jpg.1a68c214ebbe03d1d1001823fb2b5d65.jpg

We could only handle two straight rides on Batman.

eagle.jpg.e435f72921aa36a4d8ad6b43755f1b0d.jpg

American Eagle was running great that day. I love this ride!

cajun.jpg.0b89d1303f6c61e0a4c83109581cb6df.jpg

We're not ashamed to admit we love a good mouse coaster and Rajun Cajun is just that. Unfortunately, even with so few people there, we still had to watch the movie before Dark Knight.

ironwolf.jpg.5ed3428f3b141b4111abd18f5773cf0b.jpg

We had to ride Iron Wolf to remind ourselves of how horrible it is.

362171797_viperstation.jpg.a951a542b2834273044923f495136f11.jpg

Across the park, we queued for a front row ride on Viper. These were by far the best rides that we got on Viper all season. By our last visit in October, it developed an awful screeching sound throughout the second half of the course and seemed much rougher. On this visit however, it was fantastic.

splashbattle.jpg.7febda9ee9dadddbdc2a41dda23199e8.jpg

The new splash battle was still under construction.

skytower.thumb.jpg.ddce7e9ab14192d92a0a090099fcd24b.jpg

Time for a quick rest in the observation tower.

1511048797_parkinglotoverview.jpg.83f2c0e0d0891deb2f73d02c961b491d.jpg

It's too bad there weren't a few more people here. They wizened up in 2010 and opened several weeks later.

793298714_batmanoverview.jpg.35a3d5914897a3f0714d9c2bad4e13ba.jpg

Here's an overview of Batman and Vertical Velocity. This makes me wish Tidal Wave were still here.

whizzer.jpg.429870d4c3994d3f9d1a2acee03a52c9.jpg

It's usually difficult to see this much of Whizzer, most of the layout is hidden by trees.

300018101_viperoverview.jpg.515f314e3f8210117616f69e438f73c4.jpg

Viper from the air.

201858377_Supermanoverview.jpg.9b7b45ba4b13883a0b957d06e61d14a5.jpg

This picture was taken when Superman and I were still on good terms. Before he reached into my pocket, grabbed my camera, and slammed it to the bottom of his pretzel roll. Seriously don't take chances with loose items on B&M fliers. Lock it up, strap it down, or Superman WILL steal it.

1214107209_bulloverview.jpg.bd7ea48de4c418272413beaf60a9714d.jpg

Raging Bull in its entirety. Say what you will about Six Flags customer service, on this day everyone was extremely nice and helpful. From the parking lot attendants to the ride ops, everyone was smiling and a pleasure to deal with.

1775807146_whizzerlift.jpg.c68bc1bd81b71674065c1d9478dc6025.jpg

Back on the ground, we had a few great rides on the Whizzer. Like many people from the Chicagoland area, Whizzer was my first "big" coaster.

revolution.jpg.c1f385272be66363f2cb6a18f8fdfb14.jpg

Here's the only ride at SFGam I cannot ride. Something about facing inward while spinning just does not set well with my stomach. I have no problem riding frisbees that face outward like Maxair.

1179947506_eagleexit.jpg.8effdf3f83b5e7fa67368667a6685535.jpg

We ended the day with a marathon session on American Eagle. We had a great time at Great America, next up is Indiana Beach.

Photo TR: Indiana Beach 5/3/2009

Our next stop is our home park, Indiana Beach. Upon our arrival we noticed a larger crowd than we expected, it took us a while to figure out what was going on. After noticing the live entertainment we realized it was Cinco De Mayo day at the park. This was my first time on Steel Hawg. Its an alright coaster, the biggest problem is it's location which seems to be outside the park. Hopefully in the coming years they can build a few things around it to make it feel less like a parking lot coaster. On to the pictures...

bridge.jpg.9805721f1c8441390deb4a51fcb3be45.jpg

This obligatory photo can only mean one thing, were at Indiana Beach!

skyride.jpg.d1dd48da2a2259523ed5b82b8d1a7f5a.jpg

We usually like to begin our visits with a trip on the skyride.

locosumo2.jpg.7055fadb8b7fc91a1b5fe5570f0f1c91.jpg

Locosumo was running two trains, always a good thing.

hawg2.jpg.2db39d0afdd6eaf30f992925f4342adf.jpg

Next up, it was time to go hoggin'!

hawg1.jpg.5e49c6b296722e04326d011f57c14bf7.jpg

Despite its location, it really is a perfect fit for Indiana Beach. The top of the lift gives a great view of the North side of Lake Schafer.

991244263_hawgcloseup2.jpg.9a93c6a58b6b83a2520331fd0011f8a1.jpg

It still had that new coaster smell. Make sure you're sitting up straight when they put the restraints down, otherwise it can be a bit painful.

1596225913_hawgcloseup1.jpg.9afe6fbf5ef9f8379371252f68537335.jpg

I just hope they keep it well maintained. With these restraints it has the potential to turn into a quite uncomfortable experience.

tigger.jpg.ab05cccca0f86900879063a7f4f72771.jpg

Tig'rr in the background, a fun, old, Schwarzkopf. I was disappointed to see that they added seatbelts since my last visit.

singer.jpg.137893959f71cf591c62f8e7d0f3a84a.jpg

It was nice having some live entertainment while in the queue for Hoosier Hurricane.

504363848_whitedresses.jpg.05c7a95fd39cd275d19733f1f1617785.jpg

These ladies were getting ready for their big performance.

stage.jpg.2b5d0a2dfc14703f7b2f38a6440693df.jpg

Everyone was feeling festive about the Mexican holiday, although the acoustics under Hurricanes station left much to be desired. I would love to see Indiana Beach make better use of this space in the future.

1222970640_churchbench.jpg.9595946d2ee6c989178fd7b0f6e5d5d5.jpg

I was a little confused about the religious theming. These decorations had been taken down by our next visit.

tacoline.jpg.dd1c67344a870daab233999d5a0a9562.jpg

I love to see big crowds at Indiana Beach, however, I hate having to wait in line for tacos.

753685897_denpirate.thumb.jpg.ade1411ecd941baa7d7abfc33ac13931.jpg

Next up was the Den of Lost Thieves. I like any shooting dark ride with nuns. Look for them, they're in there.

denexit.jpg.9fb361c5903f85e72e5ab5fefab2ce83.jpg

Before they converted it into a shooting dark ride there was a bus behind this door that blasted it's air horn at you. For a first time rider, it was terrifying. Locosumo had something similar but with a train. Does anyone remember what these rides were called before they converted them?

pinball.thumb.jpg.ef5ff6df62e9d70a7a29a5a9bd3ffd06.jpg

Before we hop back on the skyride, its time for some pinball.

cars.jpg.7f434a1b650680a4da16495ab8e77a17.jpg

The antique cars are quite popular with all ages of guests.

locosumo3.jpg.7c63889fa9c1ebe18bb73c64a7e8d8c6.jpg

Sure, its rough, but its a fun kind of rough.

exit.jpg.dcb254468f4748f4a713a609cba27afa.jpg

This concludes a fun day at Indiana Beach. Next up is Cedar Point and Holiday World, thanks for reading!

Photo TR: Cedar Point 5/18/2009

Few of you have heard about the next park we're going to visit, a small, seaside park called Cedar Point. We were originally going to spend two days there, but unbeknownst to us it was math & science & kids up to your armpits day at the park. So we decided to duck out early and head down to King's Island the next day. On to the pictures...

1667672509_entranceroad.jpg.036b2220d4d66594bee22e2191f70cbe.jpg

No matter how many times I come here I still get goosebumps when I see this skyline.

430292823_emptymidway.jpg.80854835266bdf7fc586d5567cf57e12.jpg

We got here just in time for platinum passholder early entry. Millennium Force wasn't open yet so we headed over to Maverick.

maverick2.jpg.96d231c48727dcb2ce0b2f36a4fa7bfd.jpg

It would be great if they could upgrade Mavericks restraints to the strap style on I305. In my opinion that would turn this ride from good to great.

maverick1.jpg.daa4480b4d7a236a32b7f21f6d03e7b1.jpg

This airtime hill is by far my favorite element of any ride in the park.

879417969_meanstreak.jpg.e7ee682482426ece766889f8dbaad457.jpg

Time to ride Mean Streak and make sure it's still painful and pointless. It was.

gemini.jpg.e91e87b46ac35b651f759ede55edb083.jpg

Making our way around the park, Gemini was next. Meanwhile hordes of children were being dropped off at the front entrance in busloads.

magnum.jpg.2532622d4b86681c9417c3f068ff01f5.jpg

Magnum was next, its an alright ride if you choose the right seat. I prefer row 2.

ttd.thumb.jpg.e0930a698a96b8c6b81f0bf3b04e982f.jpg

This ride is OK too I guess.

1413668324_pinballsign2.jpg.6823d4742117a1d9a7cfe3436691a6c7.jpg

Yes Pinball! Actually no, the sign was wrong.

1074160773_pinballsign1.jpg.5721cc975a89dbcfb02105ecbd70cc31.jpg

Yes Pinball! Actually no, this sign was wrong too.

754068222_corkscrewmidway.jpg.7788a86a1a0e9875a845ad747519b50f.jpg

The crowds really started to fill in. Most of these math & science kids seemed totally unsupervised.

corkskrew.jpg.c7ce8f1573ee325fa923055ed700d4ec.jpg

I've heard of head choppers but this is ridiculous.

349446111_irondragon.jpg.c8a93364fa485e53bbc5c24638c8a2cb.jpg

Iron Dragon through the mist.

2073647752_disastertransport.jpg.e9c53a66c8ade8b207d8f0f6d468e6c1.jpg

As a self-proclaimed Rolling Thunder fanboy, I'm not opposed to Disaster Transport. It's amusing that the theming is so poor that they don't even try to improve it anymore. Even more amusing, they still sell the "3D" prism glasses in the queue.

pinball1.jpg.49eb6500e81416e0215cb23d69b2fb57.jpg

Finally we found the pinball. Not the best collection, but at least it's something.

pinball2.jpg.9a70e488ab435f20356eab72bf31efaa.jpg

This one is just right! Note the miniature machine to the left.

1584694027_wildcatque.jpg.84922d53917110e27468551a0b397258.jpg

There were a few coasters we didn't have a chance to ride on our first visit here. Namely, Wildcat, Corkscrew and Blue Streak. Blue Streak was getting stuck on it's lift most of the day so we had to wait until our next visit to ride it.

745588806_raptorque.jpg.4cde48e96d0bb423d8ba64beaf22b7fc.jpg

There it is, stuck on the lift. We waited over an hour for Raptor.

1986907367_raptor2ndhalf.jpg.dfa2a4f9bf119415d55c68fc40f04a9f.jpg

I like raptor, it's my second favorite B&M invert after Alpengeist.

1390864260_raptorloop.jpg.8fbf4f4421d65d5949a43c1f9260f3fa.jpg

It's also quite photogenic.

1002202512_maxairmidway.jpg.ccd3c74176a72b21829cd1032624de2a.jpg

I like Wicked Twister quite a bit as well. Especially the last row.

maxair2.jpg.ca59a3df29c4fb71cbec2dfcdd6d3c1d.jpg

Our ride on Maxair was delayed due to vomit cleanup. I'm sure that's a common occurrence on this ride.

mantis.jpg.d0bf09864c12f2a7113d4fa055e87f4d.jpg

We made our way over to Mantis.

mantis2.jpg.b0ba9b97a431278f6afcf03ed3a2982b.jpg

After waiting in the Mantis queue for 90 minutes we decided to definitely not spend a second day here.

skyhawk.jpg.e5adf0f6a03249007ddc856122cadeae.jpg

We were pleased that Skyhawk had a longer program than it did on our previous visit.

skyhawk2.jpg.ded0fbb2a1993633687acf57d94c42ec.jpg

I wish more parks had Screamin' Swings, they're my favorite flat ride.

CCMR.jpg.ba2976723ad2c688dbcf93969fd24217.jpg

We rode the mine ride...

MF.thumb.jpg.489e52cf6335820c66edeb04e53fddf2.jpg

And then made our way down the Frontier Trail to see what was happening with Millennium Force.

1500304397_mfque.jpg.cd6f0403376a54176eaf2a40844bc8b9.jpg

Once we saw the queue we decided to take a lap on the train instead.

And that was it, I hope you enjoyed this look at the little known park called Cedar Point.

Photo TR: Holiday World 5/19/2009

After Cedar Point, we got back to the hotel and I jumped on the internet to check King's Island's hours. I saw they were open the next day so we decided to go there. Once we arrived I realized I was mistaken. It was truly a Wally World moment as we sat in the parking lot wondering where everyone was. Undeterred, we pulled up to the nearest hotspot so I could check Holiday Worlds hours. They were open but only until 5:30. If we hurried we could get there by 2 so we hit the road with a new destination. We set out on a legendary voyage to ride the coasters everyone is raven about. Here's the pictures...

mansfieldOH.jpg.ea46c88b74ad7152f22c3ce09e36a263.jpg

On our way to Cincinnati we passed through this town with a historic carousel.

1135046601_roadsign.jpg.512bfcc1f9c336eff2d3477b14528a53.jpg

After a few embarrassing setbacks, we finally made it.

clock.jpg.d78b1893bffdb7ee3cd8cf5e7fd5cfea.jpg

And with plenty of time to spare.

halloween.jpg.0ebe009a59a9a742a760f213d087ad20.jpg

We went straight for the Halloween section to ride the Legend and Raven.

2116422047_legendsign.jpg.2ad2045f22549404c1ef2fc03859c744.jpg

Unlike Raven and the Voyage, I hadn't heard great things about the Legend. I was expecting an average ride.

legendblackboard.jpg.270af37247e2be6ca04082c9a620fc97.jpg

It's cool if I bring these loose objects on right?

390176890_legenddrop2.jpg.4f09fc7ecb353fa1cc60eadbb90044a1.jpg

I thought it was way better than the average wood coaster. I liked it better than Prowler and Evil Knievel.

252602658_legenddrop.jpg.3019ccdaa745e7f7c69275629944ac0e.jpg

I found the drop to be really intense. The layout was fun and unique, although I admit the laterals near the end can be a bit uncomfortable. I'd love to know how they feel in millennium flier trains.

raven.jpg.2f3e826c44ac4df3d30bd5d70089e10b.jpg

Next up was Raven.

raven2.jpg.b9080ab7762b1a77fbb6d730a2704897.jpg

It was just as intense, but left me wanting more.

raven3.jpg.9f5d4de3c2e4e2cc9e5ea87c81afb3be.jpg

Still a great ride, I prefer it to any GCI in Missouri.

swings.jpg.aec65b4afb61bbed9c2f3f7ca76954e1.jpg

I would have loved to have ridden the swings, but we were short on time.

oasis.jpg.b5007870b4fb9489261c12b4f2d2433d.jpg

Here's where you get your free soft drinks. I like the gatorade with a splash of Mt. Dew.

thanksgiving2.jpg.e664df63fcf02454cffe06957ca37327.jpg

Progressing through the seasons, we made our way to the Thanksgiving area.

voyage4.jpg.a373b0219679833b951699935286e653.jpg

What a beauty!

voyage5.thumb.jpg.b99a4e7dbd400babbe3840dca88b427d.jpg

It's uncanny how fast this ride is. Not just the first half, but all the way to the end brakes.

voyage3.jpg.9c60be14efe438964b3f034620a38691.jpg

What is with the manure smell in the tunnels? Anyone know?

granny.jpg.35ba0b93812708a89af77d1dbcb3573f.jpg

This hip granny prepares you for the Turkey themed shooting dark ride. I really wanted to like it, but nothing about it warranted a re-ride.

pilgrims.thumb.jpg.179a9fd045be506ca51395ad30926960.jpg

Pilgrims Plunge isn't a bad ride. As flumes go it's pretty extreme.

donkeyfan.jpg.b807230bd7f159fe20fa8bb2ddec87fd.jpg

This big-ass fan proves Pilgrim's Plunge is donkey friendly.

thanksgiving.jpg.3d60a38de47510b761010965c031432e.jpg

Pilgrim's Plunge really brings together the Thanksgiving section.

227215216_4thofjuly.jpg.e4e114091ea2b60c72dc63e597f0f179.jpg

I wish we had more time to explore the 4th of July and Christmas areas. I would have liked to try Liberty Launch in particular.

revolution.thumb.jpg.2cd5994742980527755ad077a27fdbe7.jpg

Another red white and blue, inward facing ride called Revolution. I won't ride this one either.

countrybumpkins.jpg.e5ce7309600b8afc4fa0cc3ca9e4782b.jpg

These fellers were a hit with the ladies.

rapids.jpg.1380a41eb388800bc7db8630d967ef7c.jpg

Most parks have western themed areas. At Holiday World they reserve theirs strictly to the rapids ride.

voyage1.jpg.037cdd2d10f0f4bad13eb3e3fa53f658.jpg

We ended the day with a Voyage marathon session.

voyage2.thumb.jpg.e2880796dac9fe5aca42d45ca22d5cba.jpg

I find recent reports of Voyage's roughness to be be exaggerated. I don't see how it could have possibly deteriorated that much since our visit.

xmas.jpg.59bd7064c54c223a39d61c75cfddc320.jpg

This was the only picture I have of the Christmas section, at least we have plenty more of the park to explore on our next visit. We had a days worth of fun in the few hours we spent. We can't wait to return!

indiana.jpg.c4f7c810b5fc3bda010690bcea40d667.jpg

I hate backtracking! Driving back into Kentucky to get to I65 seems downright counterproductive (although all the mapping and GPS programs tell me its the fastest route). That's why I'm writing my congressman to propose a new highway that runs from Chicago to Santa Claus, Highway 1225.

Thanks for reading, next up is our East coast trip!

Photo TR: King's Island 5/30/2009

Next up, we head out to some of the best parks on the East coast and a few in between. Originally we planned on going straight to Busch Gardens Europe to start the trip, but since we were driving by King's Island, it seemed appropriate that we stop in on the way. We arrived as they opened to take advantage of platinum pass early entry, and we stayed until around 3pm. On to the pictures...

1592205801_parkinglot.jpg.7245ed1d5fd46537f88dd564b39a9cef.jpg

Only a few minutes before early entry and they just opened the parking lot.

tower.jpg.4937a136fe2f60a976453753f095d9a8.jpg

Here we are at King's Island, what a pretty entrance plaza.

donkey.jpg.3eb1a622b2ea4aed90aad09e6700d2d1.jpg

Another donkey friendly park.

981038104_dbackdrop.thumb.jpg.8878a699ecad160a8e87d1e22fbd5d27.jpg

We went straight to Diamondback, I can't think of a better way to kick off the trip.

771809670_dbackcloseup.jpg.25e3cbfa95aad5606f0ae1d13125c97e.jpg

We got to ride quite a few times in our first hour there.

beast.jpg.3033fd1a80382ab3f4a51d7f2c3b20d3.jpg

Then it was on to the Beast. It wasn't as good as I anticipated but still not bad for such an old ride.

1977868913_fortkinzel.jpg.4627f75c6a61335301cd37c38946b801.jpg

Once the rope dropped the race to Fort Kinzel was on. Riding Firechicken and FoF first is the best King's Island advice I've received.

firehawk.jpg.a855d06dd07996b5c1168f16050e9099.jpg

One ride will be enough, there are better coasters here.

1069866977_fofque.thumb.jpg.d9468111220cf699f3e338b584f69b1c.jpg

Who would have thought aliens use such primitive technology.

backlot2.jpg.b3d9404e8a7edfdef5df03c95b7ee9c2.jpg

Speaking of better coasters, this one fits the bill.

backlot1.jpg.d125aebe61a2f6de758c40c4445c1424.jpg

The launch into the helix was especially fun. I'll take this over any of the spaghetti bowl Premiers.

ae.jpg.6c3dde54c4789b05cd28c49f2b3e0a63.jpg

I wasn't expecting much from Adventure Express and was pleasantly surprised. Although, I found the end to be laughably anti-climactic.

racer.jpg.0ffa4d5714fea22a64cefdfa97e5cb77.jpg

Racer wasn't racing this day.

832824635_sobflightdecksigns.jpg.acf2e658702d69952d87cf05073b6a7d.jpg

Here we stand at the crossroads between pain and mediocrity.

flightdeck.jpg.73bc4fc5f83bbbf8520ae0ebb2f56c29.jpg

Mediocre it may be but when compared to a ride like Iron Dragon, Flight Deck isn't so bad. Though it is certainly no where near the quality of Big Bad Wolf.

juggler.jpg.3368832a0af212713967ec588fe9fe3b.jpg

This juggler contributed to the festive atmosphere.

band.jpg.13cc4695f4673d6443dc94506dc807b5.jpg

If you're going to be in a marching band, Ohio State is the only place to be. These guys were treated like rockstars by random guests.

vortex.jpg.ccc0c11c943ebf7a10b73baccc7fe1de.jpg

It was getting late, so we quickly hit Vortex before a few last rides on Diamondback.

268343594_dbackcloseup2.jpg.d0e77772e5a182603ca0605554cd0d98.jpg

Did I make it clear that I like this ride?

177604403_dbackcloseup3.jpg.fcc1cbb77e7670527e3aea462849e0e9.jpg

Sure the 2nd half isn't great but I love the wooded setting.

682972074_dbackcloseup4.jpg.72f18814ccc643c7d75a32a9f2f26ac0.jpg

It really rounds out King's Island's coaster collection. Also, the operations were extremely efficient.

entrance.thumb.jpg.1489f1666d267845d28428a48df08483.jpg

That's it for King's Island, but since we missed a few credits we'll be back later in the week.

342827458_bridgeconstruction.jpg.7ecdc2901104225c8a5b421bffe3a561.jpg

I did a bit of rubbernecking at this bridge construction.

89208360_nitrosign.jpg.3b403d94333e4cb0510f63f73bee2435.jpg

If it had been El Toro I would have stopped.

mistyhills.jpg.b256f9142e9a37865a1e1edbb4350940.jpg

An exotic sight for a couple of midwest people. It sure was fun driving through the mountains of West Virginia.

We've got a while to go but it will all be worth it once we get to Busch Gardens Europe.

I have mixed opinions about your likes and dislikes. I completely agree with you about Maverick's airtime hill; such a great ride! Although I don't really see the love for BlSC; I mean sure the launch is fun, but FoF i infinitely better IMO.

Love the reports, keep the updates rolling!

Quality over quantity is the first phrase that comes to mind when I think of Busch Gardens Europe's coaster collection. I could go on and on, but I'll just sound like a blathering fanboy. This place is great, we had a blast, on to the pictures...

entrance.jpg.7e5a7d84ced844e5902d7178bb8f1ade.jpg

We've made it to Busch Gardens Europe!

england.jpg.82a34685a96c6c6c4df2c60829ef9360.jpg

The theming here is impeccable. From the authentic architecture to the British transvestites, no detail is overlooked.

france.jpg.bcbe3f5744cb3018d61873a84b0140a5.jpg

First things first, we headed to France.

griffin11.jpg.208f5880a2712e54662d0109668de3a9.jpg

We thought we would beat the crowds heading towards Griffon.

griffin10.jpg.99a275360efad715663afdc25b1c5a87.jpg

But there was no need for that, it was a walk-on for most of the day.

griffin8.jpg.5a6cf32505a82afc1949013cf38e3d36.jpg

After 4 or 5 rides we knew it was going to be a very good day.

griffin4.jpg.d38d01348016cedae4a538e973af56c3.jpg

We jumped on the skyride to go exploring.

griffin3.jpg.96dc794272ba2d8d72dcba9c0514bb0d.jpg

You get some great views of the coasters from the skyride.

swings.jpg.46fc333b2df611ba58d651ab96e09172.jpg

Big Bad Wolf opened a bit later that morning, so we rode the swings while we waited.

411307103_bbwsign.jpg.af80910fd2918d79a3f46bb9f30a58be.jpg

I've looked forward to riding this since I was 7 years old, a few more minutes won't kill me.

bbw4.jpg.d9d06a2704f8fa2cad623ab591e516be.jpg

It was finally time. On this lap around the park we rode it 3 times. It too was a walk on most of the day.

darkastle2.thumb.jpg.2b407c9bc54b89f13ed3c7f49bb1ef2d.jpg

Darkastle was fun, but without watching the pre-show videos I didn't really know what was going on.

darkastle.thumb.jpg.96cbe4fed25743080d7cdbc25920cf8f.jpg

We're certainly not used to this level of theming.

apollo2.jpg.7bd4a4f89cf6a047a4abb8272dc28ce4.jpg

Apollo's Chariot was just as good as Diamondback, if not a bit better.

apollo.jpg.0f17c2b7d071a3b90a8a0309215594e8.jpg

It's too bad they had to install the goose nets by the river. Fabio ruins everything he touches.

1269621603_apollocloseup.jpg.19f9b15cbc6622fe5ad6e39e51ed5098.jpg

I think they liked it too.

pompeii.jpg.3ef4ef703cf5da5784e45a604315f21b.jpg

We don't usually do water rides, but Escape from Pompeii was a welcome exception. This is said often, but it's worth the ride for the pyrotechnics alone. And you don't really get all that wet.

train2.jpg.b97365ebeb5cc12c74c851839102a92b.jpg

I like a good train ride, so I regret not riding the one here.

eagle.jpg.16788b74d72b4f0d07aa4fb039efdf0c.jpg

They have animals here too, like this eagle...

wolf.jpg.0055d89503b898f686f360208bfbc8cc.jpg

And a pack of wolves, nothing too exotic.

alp3.jpg.7ea9a31334ec5c8b55d327111a885529.jpg

At most parks Alpengeist would be the featured attraction.

1308060543_3coasters.jpg.df412ae16eea5d37ac6f5bdac3254126.jpg

But BGE has an ensemble of great rides so it just blends in.

979182378_nessiesign.jpg.b145fad3558ddb0b138883d40172ed6c.jpg

It takes some serious maintenance to keep an old Arrow like this running smooth.

1808352452_nessieloops.jpg.eddfb091e1c5423edf6f1048cc3701b6.jpg

And it is still quite comfortable.

600438458_nessieloops2.jpg.d9af3b5270d7274f4dbad9725644e7ab.jpg

I can't think of another Arrow looper that I would be inclined to re-ride.

food.jpg.0367a8fe948cc909a4ca59040f054972.jpg

We had lunch at the buffet underneath Griffon. The food was good...

griffin.jpg.ff1e9df4f5dc97789f584a0ef03de352.jpg

The views were better.

griffin5.jpg.08a03cc1143711208c8445f95be28f63.jpg

logride.jpg.cc7354f2ffaf512c2fbca13f38965e53.jpg

We stopped off in New France to ride the log ride. I thought it would be themed better. It was just a regular old log ride.

bbw3.jpg.d39fcc93b4160a29b43dde771ef90dcf.jpg

We came back for a few more rides on Big Bad Wolf.

bbw.jpg.dfb26da6d78bc1f190cc064a0efecd83.jpg

If I would have known then what I know now, I would have waited for the train.

train1.jpg.d66dab6dc5c967ca51db06bb51399980.jpg

I can't believe I didn't take the train ride. Or the boat ride for that matter.

921441053_italyshow.jpg.9caaa74e355c4c602d21eafa4aadb6d4.jpg

I'm sure the shows here are great. It's just so hard to pull ourselves away from these rides.

griffin2.jpg.8f5c93a451d3fe921f1432fe49a1466e.jpg

One last Griffon shot before we leave BGE. We had to go get some rest for a big day at Kings Dominion in the morning.

I find the restraints on FoF to be a bit cumbersome in the area where your feet go underneath them. Also, on one occasion my girlfriend and I bumped our heads together leaving us both with a headache. It's hard to watch out for stuff like that in the dark. FoF is certainly more intense and I appreciate that but when all the effects are working I find BLSC to have a higher fun factor. Especially in my first experience not expecting the tunnel at the end.

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like them, I enjoy making them.

Photo TR: King's Dominion 6/1/2009

Contrary to BGE's policy, King's Dominion seems to have taken a quantity over quality approach to their coaster lineup. That's not to say I didn't like King's Dominion. When sandwiched between rides like Griffon and El Toro it's hard to find a ride at KD that compares. Although, the addition of I305 certainly helps. And now the pictures...

entrance.jpg.82604ab6e216609197d0a9b0baac894e.jpg

We've made it to King's Dominion. Light crowds and beautiful weather, what more could you ask for.

dominator1.jpg.027c95492fb6d90bcd604f825a8cb063.jpg

First up was Dominator. I was really looking forward to this one, it was KD's premier ride at the time.

728988045_dominatorloop.jpg.a53de938a826dd47108fd541cdb6df82.jpg

Unfortunately, I hit my head going into the loop. We rode it again and I tried to hold my head back and brace myself, but I still whacked it on the restraints.

dominator2.jpg.622f3de7922bddc4837a37d9937b57a4.jpg

The rest of the ride was alright, but as I am not a masochist I refrained from anymore rides.

berserker2.thumb.jpg.2d05827d71a97a6a0242581c98edd634.jpg

Ahh, sweet memories of Power Dive at SFGam. Do you know what happens when someone vomits on a ride like this? It's not pretty.

berserker.jpg.85915d9d9c3991bc5cbf9a0846a1c62b.jpg

"My love for you is like a truck, Berserker!"

It must be a popular ride if they named an ice cream concoction after it.

dragon.jpg.dc93d41fe6597fa5f29ab443de6130c8.jpg

"For the low, low price of $899.99 you too can own this hideous dragon!"

foliage.jpg.381bd83d2c334a06ef70179c178a43d8.jpg

I was impressed by the landscaping and foliage at King's Dominion.

345748552_filthysign.jpg.689549a3807e3a4cd792fd832bf5b97d.jpg

Although these signs around the park were covered in some sort of indelible filth. It's too bad, I like little markers like these that document the history of the park.

grizzly.thumb.jpg.95a9d9c959acb2bfd3b49aac980134dd.jpg

It took a while to find the entrance to Grizzly. It was alright, nothing to write home about.

richochet1.jpg.f4fc9a8696f422fa8093609aa922f030.jpg

After Grizzly, Ricochet was next.

richochet2.jpg.d23005aa2998ccf299a623260508c959.jpg

I've said before that I like a good mouse coaster, however, this particular mouse I do not consider good.

shockwave.jpg.ee91269217415f38dbf8eb1637d748de.jpg

Haiku time:

Shockwave does a dance

Between discomfort and pain

Nimbly, it tip-toes

hurler.jpg.829080c22dcc3d3e6d4d0fd5dd48523d.jpg

We walked up the entrance to Hurler followed by a small group of people. It wasn't the entrance, it was the exit. Neither were clearly marked. Also it sucked, or as Garth Algar would put it: "Turn it off, man, turn it off! It's sucking my will to live! Oh, the humanity!"

863197368_rebelyell.jpg.96e509e4b718364c558aef84f749d69c.jpg

I thought Rebel Yell was the second best wooden coaster at KD.

kiddycoaster.jpg.1e808c70172dfd49fdc4014a69f679c6.jpg

This is the one I preferred. Also the least rough of the lot.

anaconda.jpg.eb3637d624e82eecfb3b7cdf55edfb93.jpg

Anaconda is my favorite ride named after a Sisters of Mercy song. At least until someone names a ride "1959".

shockwave3.jpg.8a128754ff8b30f42ce7a5c6750e5061.jpg

"Fat Americans"

Laughs Togo machine of death

"Squeeze into restraints"

overview.jpg.b43cea75e15784ee45bd9e15409c9f8a.jpg

It was time to head up to the observation tower.

762851675_anacondaoverview.jpg.19f3c9beeff28fe534724c64adcba476.jpg

Something was going on behind Anaconda, I'm sure its nothing.

451874261_volcanooverview.jpg.8895cdc929eaa2cb0054191afd5c9969.jpg

There's Volcano over there.

1358333897_volcanoentrance2.jpg.9fec2cfacea6d76f0d68c51a3c7da37d.jpg

Here's the sign for Volcano.

1879788016_volcanoentrance.jpg.614cb4aedcb1d9db838ea08c5e6f4e3c.jpg

And here's another in case you didn't see the giant-ass sign you just walked under.

1263121531_volcano2.thumb.jpg.aff0e72c4ec91d1a4df8fb769cb290a1.jpg

This ride creates UFO's out of thin air. How many rides can you say that about? Seriously though, I really liked Volcano. Most of the guests on our visit came in buses and most of those buses shipped the people out a few hours early. We rode it at least seven times during our last hour there.

avalanche1.jpg.bbdc49e479fbfb0a0d571138f41edd32.jpg

I had read some very positive things about Avalanche.

avalanche2.jpg.f4db829afea150d9022263be7c59bba4.jpg

I think I had my hopes set a bit high. It was just alright.

FoF.jpg.84f72026a5dc6ff9c96b8d7a56ff5b51.jpg

I couldn't tell the difference between this Flight of Fear and the one at King's Island. Just another credit.

BLSC.jpg.c83f0a92ca9ccb300a2714a91bb44145.jpg

Same goes for the backlot stunt job.

eldorado.jpg.c1180cf5f423b24478f3968e784d7015.jpg

I wish I would have ridden this one. I like falling stars and I'm curious what it feels like to sit in the other direction.

209228406_droptower.thumb.jpg.ba97d195bd797fa98936a05a6852e5bd.jpg

We didn't pass on the drop tower although I'll admit I'm starting to tire of them.

694650138_darkride2.thumb.jpg.2a3c294d64fd5dfd5e5b9247ea6a6b24.jpg

Having skipped the Scooby Doo dark ride at KI, we made a point to check this one out.

1781105266_darkride.jpg.8f609d66ae8a994a239854b02ffa8099.jpg

So we did. I lost, by a lot.

exit.thumb.jpg.1607e718bd1346103c7b383deb4282fb.jpg

And that concludes our day at King's Dominion. It's a fun place, we can't wait to return and ride I305. Thanks for reading!

Next up, the shadeless slab of asphalt that is Six Flags America!

Photo TR: Six Flags America 6/2/2009

The next park on our trip was Six Flags America. Despite having a fairly decent flagship ride, the bland atmosphere and horrid customer service made this the worst amusement park experience I've ever had. Here's the pictures to prove it...

maryland.jpg.54e4448d47f2eae7329fbfab63469ad1.jpg

We left Virginia early to get to SFA by the time they open.

opening.jpg.4f5a2d10ea3c756fc21b2b2a71c94728.jpg

We're here just in time for the big rope drop.

crowd.jpg.0da8b4c0eba0bdf2c01113295fe942d4.jpg

The crowd waits eagerly in anticipation. What will happen when he flips the switch? What great ride should we go on first? Will we ever find shade?

792023718_roarsignage.jpg.e30fd9f8f9ba6fd09c7af27bd3081cb6.jpg

Assuming most of the crowd would head for Superman and Joker's Jinx, we though we would be smart and head for Roar first.

1644456845_roarque.jpg.1b34a0224549c69f340c8751e3732ff4.jpg

But one of the ride operators was late for work. We waited here for five minutes and then decided to come back later.

jj4.thumb.jpg.0fa79e7c74999e9786329bcc4d77049a.jpg

So we made our way to Jokers Jinx.

jj2.jpg.dcd27cf3ed9086448cc68748556f66b1.jpg

The ride operator here really made it feel like it was our privilege to ride. To say he was disgruntled would be like saying Mind Eraser is "a little rough".

jj3.jpg.6bddbbc466f68373bbdd318728fb69d7.jpg

It was a fun ride I suppose, I certainly wouldn't want to wait in a queue for it.

superman8.jpg.24a2a91ccb585b49b17dfb07b57bd6ed.jpg

After a couple laps on Joker's Jinx we headed towards Superman.

superman7.jpg.7df529ce42e27bb3f51476e3ef937e14.jpg

It was stuck on the lift so we headed to Batwing instead.

batwing1.jpg.95c634aac5a32adb3d56004296ed3506.jpg

The locker attendant at Batwing evidently worked on commission. He wanted me to pay to lock up my camera instead of putting it in my pocket. An argument ensued that ended with me pointing to the posted rules and reading them aloud for him (I had zip up cargo pockets).

batwing2.jpg.c52b970b23da14be1a4b16e5b5ae60e7.jpg

I thought it was much rougher than Firehawk at KI. Also, the restraints are awful. One ride was enough for us.

superman5.jpg.85c10ae5b9183bc1d2d21a2a2d3c9735.jpg

Back to Superman now, it was finally time to ride the best coaster here...

superman6.jpg.e1592aaae23eef4cb9a3ab52df5383d7.jpg

But it got stuck again.

beach.jpg.a963eda83a0cbab8c0ead6051be5d77e.jpg

This looks like a fun, shadeless place to bake until you're well done. At least you'll be entertained.

midway.jpg.e5ae7f97c5e9d03356f86d04634a894a.jpg

Shadeless and scorching hot. It was only around 90 degrees on our visit, I can't imagine how bad it would be if it were hotter.

roar.jpg.acb393cbba1c20f2ddb16a80c29bb71c.jpg

We made it back to Roar, it was a little better than I was expecting. One ride was enough though.

flume.jpg.1be601a28a8d1f8d2ff9acdb6953c8e4.jpg

The waterpark hadn't open for the season yet, so the water rides were the only attractions with a wait.

274163654_dancecontest.jpg.ec52180a6ccb2309d971b50505f405f4.jpg

You can see how popular the dance contest was with the guests.

skunks.jpg.d025c9d556ad5f50433455b80f22fc9f.jpg

The Looney Tunes kids area and the front entrance plaza were the only sections of the park that didn't feel like a shadeless slab of asphalt.

3.thumb.jpg.7bc22b2af2cd7d6d4649ad07e7b574a8.jpg

And now here are the top 5 things that make Six Flags America great....

#5. Superman

4.jpg.00126b71a099bd4888a67b5b20cdd9eb.jpg

#4. SGA is only 3 1/2 hours from Six Flags Great Adventure! Well worth the trip.

2.jpg.9082bcaa42203d35820445711c956b0c.jpg

#3. SFA is only 2 1/2 hours from Hersheypark! Not counting traffic of course.

5.jpg.8bc3996f8451fb5540929b697fb8847b.jpg

#2. SFA is only 2 hours from King's Dominion's adequate coaster lineup!

320698599_skullmnt.jpg.3388ed80da228f75c20e10b41bef79b1.jpg

#1. SFA is located only 3 1/2 hours from Busch Gardens Europe!

superman4.jpg.e540feb874ebe571c4c84594c80e9213.jpg

We made it back to Superman, I liked it quite a bit. Although, the trains can be a bit uncomfortable for a man of my tubby stature. I'm really looking forward to SFNE's Bizarro.

shade.jpg.873b34195a584298fb0a9503f4badf07.jpg

It took some time but we finally found some shade in this place.

donkey.jpg.30bdf8d46f3f4ca5abef2ef7535f52e7.jpg

These carousel horses ears looked more like donkeys to me.

minderaser.jpg.62427ae7131cc2044bf1dd174582d080.jpg

We hit Wild Thing and Mind Eraser quickly before we left for SFGadv. I felt a bit concussed after Mind Eraser which made for an interesting drive to New Jersey.

jersey.jpg.fe7177f14f820deed363e0bc14eb49df.jpg

That smell can only mean one thing, we've made it out of SFA alive! Tomorrow we have a great day at Six Flags Great Adventure planned. Thanks for reading!

Nothing was turned into a GIGA! I'm pretty sure nobody was expecting that. What a difference 10 months can make! Intimidator 305's construction began on June 1st 2009 and its media day was April 1st 2010.

BTW, love your trip reports!

The next park on our East coast trip is Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari. Great rides and fantastic customer service added up to a very fun day at the park. I only regret not having more time to spend there. And now the pictures...

We've made it to Six Flags Great Adventure!

KK2.thumb.jpg.6660d43bf8e0ef9dbaa4aeec25d1bf40.jpg

The Safari restrooms offer a better view of Kingda Ka than you'll find in the park. The safari opened earlier than the park, that means we get to experience the wildlife without sacrificing any rides on El Toro.

deer.jpg.447cb9b3c4d7f11f1b034410296eaf5a.jpg

These guys know the truth about Kingda Ka's "airtime" hill...It's just a forceless slope.

wildebeast.jpg.3156ff0c2968dae807d3353e062551ef.jpg

Along with a world class wooden coaster, SFGadv also shares Wildebeest in common with Holiday World. But I'm sure you gnu that already.

longhorn.jpg.40fb11130d83ae567bb5ef2fc53ba658.jpg

The safari is a must do attraction at Six Flags Great Adventure.

goats.jpg.4f959009e02bf07da2f36ec14822eeca.jpg

Awww...

bear1.jpg.de62ea3f80b2b321fb01d13debff14b5.jpg

Where else can you see bears doin' it? We named the one on the bottom Rex Grossman.

bear2.jpg.211ef26c8704a0dc92af0e8ba92d0466.jpg

The bears were really active on our visit. If not for El Toro and Bizarro they would have been the highlight of the day.

baboon.jpg.579328f1476282ed070dd06406175e6e.jpg

It takes more than smoke and fire to fool this monkey, he still calls that ride Medusa.

6248178_ropedrop.jpg.7e4c056e3e479d0d5b6577bb87bef300.jpg

After a fun drive through the safari we made it to the park in time for the rope drop.

900476736_goldenkingdom.jpg.1e4c042a7b83f8c367d26626e2aa157a.jpg

Not knowing how crowded it would be, we made a beeline to Kingda Ka.

KK.jpg.faefd3a5269dbbd09ad0eb5a531f839e.jpg

We had gone the whole trip not expecting to ride Kingda Ka. Lightning had struck it just a few weeks before hand. Despite rumors that it would be down well into June, they fixed it just in time for our visit.

tiger.jpg.ef2bb57145703132ad7b40dd43f8493f.jpg

This kitty lives in between Kingda Ka and El Toro.

et6.jpg.e229170835eb8759f5aeb93ca0079f82.jpg

Here's what we came here for...

et5.jpg.48a1fdc33229af3e701e7090eb2d567e.jpg

We've had some great luck with queue times on our trip. Today was no exception. Everything was a walk-on all day with the exception of Kingda Ka (10-15 min.).

et4.jpg.ea4f14d555cf9ded1a6f6f4761ca675c.jpg

I don't understand why there aren't more Intamin pre-fabs around. Are they much more expensive than GCI's? Whats the deal?

1929878584_fortlandscape.jpg.e539f63e1762ec498395d81a2ad2e612.jpg

After 4 or 5 rides on El Toro we had to catch our breath. Here's a photo you've never seen before.

1024195875_sawmill.jpg.52d1cae3a05a8c22ea2c009d1bd94020.jpg

I hear this log flume is fun but we didn't ride.

1819880794_minetrain.thumb.jpg.41f1d06aa014ae3247d086274e341dd5.jpg

Kind of like Adventure Express at KI, I wasn't expecting much from this mine ride but it was actually pretty fun.

bizarro3.jpg.d8ff37f0480e307b7663863af9459837.jpg

Bizarro was next, we really like this one too.

1732188792_skyridemaintenence.jpg.9b9a09769ee8fe6b325a43b778e28b65.jpg

Here's a reminder that maintenance jobs are not only thankless but also can be quite dangerous. I consider myself a thrill seeker, but seriously if I was that guy I'd be pooping down my leg.

1300550597_skullmtn.jpg.0988529b4c42f12163ad3335503a88f5.jpg

Skull Mountain seems like a really good family coaster.

pinball.thumb.jpg.768269a7aa36c7ab0b271c4379a4561e.jpg

We've been to 5 parks so far on this trip and this is the first pinball machine.

batman.jpg.0f0055b7f33fb5cf9ffa44b5e232550c.jpg

Batman was next...It reminded me of Batman the Ride and Batman the Ride. They're all the same to me.

nitro.jpg.314bf73a798d3f3afba52448d0cf2f65.jpg

We got held up for a while at Nitro while they changed trains. We only rode once and my initial reaction was underwhelmed. I wish we would have ridden it a few more times as I'm sure it's better than what I initially thought.

superman.jpg.c0f58b7f4b6ada78706bde6ffe38738f.jpg

Superman was next...

36319663_gasmloops.jpg.dd55ac337b14cebdec2af5e5879a5dc1.jpg

Then on to Great American Scream Machine, the second of three now extinct coasters on our trip. A lot can happen in a year I guess.

gasm.jpg.84a58c1351ef92bff899e00ce13d895e.jpg

It brought back some painful memories of Shockwave at SFGam. We should have saved it for later in the day because I did get a pretty bad headache.

theatre.jpg.e84d5307b8c720152614828c384aa095.jpg

My source at the park tells me they may use this building to contain Joker's Jinx.

1867851431_topspin.jpg.4a2324422a1ac2ace426621b2037af6c.jpg

We couldn't spare the time to ride this top spin. I really would have liked to have ridden the parachutes but we skipped them too.

carousel.jpg.3b9e201ec60c94cef6c64cafa208acdd.jpg

The antique carousel had these predator/prey paintings across the top. Also, giant chickens!

et3.thumb.jpg.07304fddcecd2cfdac68fa154c5a1725.jpg

Now that the rest of the coasters were taken care of, it was back to El Toro.

2081519351_rollingthunder.jpg.9581dc60557fff23611d0d7c36453256.jpg

Between rides we rode Rolling Thunder. It made El Toro seem that much better.

fans.jpg.3000ce9593aa3782f27874e19c6c533a.jpg

Six Flags America take note: Foliage and fans, this is how you do it.

1901169971_tigershow.jpg.d2a659e84c3aa90601e2c5d8933efdc0.jpg

We skipped the tiger show for more rides on El Toro. I regret nothing.

bizarro1.thumb.jpg.046ab49a31dde8b19ee5023872169129.jpg

We spent the rest of the day going back and forth from Bizarro to El Toro.

bizarro2.jpg.2be9e4c114380112cb28cfebfcea0083.jpg

I thought the audio was a bit too loud in the station and on the lift (so loud it hurt my ears). The smoke and fire were nice I suppose but I'm not sure it was worth the money they spent. It's still one of my favorite steel coasters.

et1.jpg.f1d50a9e0bf87e5468dfab53d191caca.jpg

Our day concluded with a very rare ride on El Toro in the rain. We had a fantastic time at SFGadv.

Tomorrow it's on to Dorney Park! Thanks for reading.

Now with 40% less superfluous, unnecessary adjectives...

Photo TR: Dorney Park 6/4/2009

We're on day 6 of our trip and we're heading to Dorney Park. It's a charming place with some excellent rides. It was disappointing that they upcharge for their Screamin' Swing but that's my only major complaint. Here are the pictures...

skyline.jpg.64be983dfee966b0feaffe9ef89d25fe.jpg

There it is, Dorney Park!

buses.jpg.933f0994b50128618e87f369252a530f.jpg

Holy busload of buses Batman! There's gonna be a lot of kids running around today. We weren't worried though, we know the drill by now. The kids will all clear out by mid-afternoon and we'll have the park to ourselves.

entrance.jpg.926258a6bfa2767134702d96fb2c4af1.jpg

Like many Cedar Fair parks they allowed platinum pass holders early entry. Membership has it's privileges.

1004877911_talonsign.jpg.5ac486b37f25becbbcbc2394e3d7936a.jpg

Talon was first up. If you guessed that we liked it you would be correct.

76039975_talonpipes.thumb.jpg.1475532196145522ef1cd4f420070ab8.jpg

This is heavy machinery, serious stuff.

798918673_talonimmelman.thumb.jpg.f919c825ff9a5f0dd7cc0433859d0f74.jpg

The best thing about talon: It's not Batman the Ride. The second best thing is this sweet Immelman.

1162256979_talonimmelman2.thumb.jpg.1e9dd90f0e82fb18fa1347d7f0451aba.jpg

It's preceded by this short Death Star trench run.

1251433397_screaminswing2.thumb.jpg.2ed3b808de11bcd251aa9fabec54de88.jpg

Here's the upcharge Screamin' Swing. I guess they're just hoping we've never been to Cedar Point.

619492899_screaminswing.jpg.8aef9f7b74c9e94ca19bac5770815531.jpg

They periodically ran it empty throughout the day. What a waste.

1223359534_mouseentrance.jpg.d98157d93d4eebe8d69310c9d1d69571.jpg

We love a good mouse.

mouse2.jpg.af14f4f0d2e40652616f1cc86f511885.jpg

This one was good. Not Arrow mouse good, but good nonetheless.

midway.jpg.4147e11233e61f1c9e506a601818675e.jpg

Continuing down the midway towards Hydra now.

hydra1.jpg.9808fc1f9db9d901bd16c9b462483cb2.jpg

It seduces you with its unique pre-lift inversion. It adds a lot to the ride in my opinion.

hydra3.jpg.ea42b7bf37a73b2aa4c39988b3bb562e.jpg

It's short, slow, and funny lookin'. Just like me!

1381189840_sffromhydra.jpg.1be95ae22ac52207715bd2bb4edb04c6.jpg

There's Steel Force in the background. Time to work our way there.

creek.jpg.9af94eafc367aa33d209a774976f9674.jpg

I like the atmosphere here at Dorney Park. Nice and relaxing.

duckie.jpg.2c440679915a29787ce19a2a0b8d173a.jpg

Goose, gosling, and trout all living together in peace.

foliage.thumb.jpg.ecc7bf4dbf44bf53e8d00d3e3ae76927.jpg

Dear Six Flags America,

See those tall, green things along the path? Those are called trees. They provide shade for guests and are aesthetically pleasing. They also keep your park from looking like a lifeless slab of asphalt. They are relatively inexpensive and as a bonus they convert carbon dioxide into the oxygen that we breathe. Love ya, Dave

thunder.jpg.eacf0cefff1e2258e0ed83e59066648b.jpg

Thunderhawk was a little rough, but still not bad considering its age.

1533321492_sfsign.jpg.e930f4374840cfd2cc04532eb7d7e292.jpg

We finally made it to Steel Force.

sf1.jpg.f718d2789c49dfb515689690bac1ba5f.jpg

The mid course break run really ruins the last half of Mamba, but I didn't get that feeling on Steel Force.

sf2.jpg.d31c041c25ba06c51f52430b5a9b4e24.jpg

That combined with the tunnels and lakeside location ranks Steel Force a bit higher than Mamba in my book.

sf3.thumb.jpg.8f982021753119c8a6c9ac6750532720.jpg

Don't worry Worlds of Fun fanboys, they're both really good rides.

revolution.jpg.436c2156b8e743acf416cde596673f94.jpg

Like the other two rides named Revolution I've reported on, I refuse to get on this.

1488749744_seadragon.jpg.98be961c07f27783c92a6dad8d82c23c.jpg

There's a nice assortment of flats here. Like this Sea Dragon...

monster.jpg.9a5f1f782dc8a1b7ebb5c10e72464fe4.jpg

Monster...

inverter.jpg.fd37061e279bdc677cd32251e7b44371.jpg

Meteor...

620127836_droptower.thumb.jpg.61a95e7d3372948da8c3a05297986669.jpg

And a duel S&S drop tower.

whip.jpg.c29f921f2b873ee4103a4c74705d4715.jpg

Also a whip. They don't have many of these in the Midwest so we had to check it out.

gun.jpg.4b1b8da071cacdec90e1b5aeb38cdcd3.jpg

I've never seen a gun on a kiddy carousel before.

kiddy.jpg.a8d558f25023947d16bde8c2d1b2cee8.jpg

They have 3 kids coasters here. This is the largest.

candy.jpg.4629beddfec6508826d785b95afbb388.jpg

These Voodoo pops will soon be replaced by the more PC Possessed pops.

cookie.jpg.6b60cdd00e801318c1ad38fa1acedbac.jpg

Is this a cookie or a brownie? I'm not sure of the shelf life, but these sugary confections usually seem like they've been sitting for a while

pinball.thumb.jpg.abe2c76689cba2bbbf60ae601c86c929.jpg

Bonus points for a pinball machine. Nice going!

sf5.thumb.jpg.4dc2af309ee5287b8ce92b1d888a3298.jpg

We ended the day with a mini-marathon on Steel Force...

talon.jpg.bcaeafbced360cdc9c85670c829ddc31.jpg

And a few more rides on Talon for good measure.

sunset.jpg.eb4bab8e691389d855e48dc43fdd8e1d.jpg

As the sun set on Dorney Park we realized our trip was sadly nearing its end. We're heading back to King's Island tomorrow for the credits we missed as our East coast trip concludes. Thanks for reading!

Photo TR: King's Island 6/5/2009

Here we are on the last day of our trip already. We were supposed to head to Hersheypark today, but after some unforeseen car trouble we ran out of money and had to go back to King's Island. We managed the entire trip on a small budget of $800 (not counting SF and CF season passes). It was nothing glamorous, lots of Wendy's and Denny's and nasty hotel rooms. I guess we can't call it a total success because we missed out on Hersheypark, but if we hadn't gone back to King's Island we may have never had a chance to ride Son of Beast (I know we wouldn't be missing much). On to the pictures...

road1.jpg.6943dce161177918131c3b398a4dc8aa.jpg

I try to not take modern technology for granted and still marvel at the simple things in life. Like this, we're about to drive through a mountain. That's almost as interesting as flying through the air while sitting on a chair!

road2.jpg.bee8d5a1febbdd02aca9e106b979da94.jpg

It was some kind of historic road.

ohio.jpg.221eddd44bcd64044e7f88c0f59d6a4f.jpg

Back in Ohio already, this trip has flown by.

gitrdone.jpg.52a1561c5332de40a2f24be9ae32691d.jpg

Yep, we're definitely back in the Midwest.

midway2.thumb.jpg.dfe35768dd4e1109f0e16dc3fca5dce2.jpg

Day 2 at King's Island. Not as exciting as Hersheypark but at least we get to ride all the stuff we missed the first time.

scooby1.jpg.942e5c18675ea2d75a2457a65016a22e.jpg

Like the Scooby Doo shooting dark ride.

scooby2.jpg.6e1fd1f05113c5baa96a287755e1c60c.jpg

Not too shabby, of the three I've ridden I can safely say the SFStl version is the best hands down.

db3.jpg.15f4e5be70147bcb811305b6b990f018.jpg

That Diamondback ride was still here.

crypt1.jpg.15a1c523f899fcef4991ed830cbad165.jpg

Another ride we missed the first time around, the Crypt. We were in the next group to get on when we heard a bunch of people booing in the other room. We thought for sure the ride broke down.

crypt2.jpg.af9d1d0c5036845241672a607577bd75.jpg

Once our ride concluded boos rang out from across the ride. I get it now.

db2.jpg.678bd497f6f65c02d44f2c9d86e7861c.jpg

It's no Apollo's Chariot.

db.jpg.63a8436d7522f83e3ea58f142f7508af.jpg

But it's still good (also, new coaster smell).

1374140163_sobsign.jpg.cc9225fcae5fab4fe7db0c3003d91315.jpg

I was really looking forward to Son of Beast. This was the longest queue we waited in on the entire trip, a little under an hour.

1917636894_sobque.thumb.jpg.c62dc516dbde52ef4c992a9544aaa4ed.jpg

The line was backed up because on this day they were filming an episode of Modern Marvels: Engineering Disasters for the History Channel.

sob.jpg.adaf7c460dd03bbeadd7befe401120e7.jpg

1. Bulldoze it.

2. Build Intamin prefab woodie

3. ?????

4. Profit!!!

dropzone.jpg.06c2fa934bb3f80f03adee13219eae46.jpg

Another ride on another drop tower...

invertigo.jpg.8f63f8998f72787e44f0a262dfcfb878.jpg

Uncomfortable rides was the theme for today. This one fits the bill.

reptar.jpg.d86b91d705399d32bdf0fd4f85b124f5.jpg

We didn't get to ride all of the coasters. We skipped this one and it's 45 minute queue. No big loss.

713866029_vortexlift.thumb.jpg.57c1a2047809aa32a368cbc820618ed7.jpg

Vortex is one of the better Arrow loopers in my opinion.

772220275_vortexloop.jpg.fd7c234d7a488acef9c8e410fd7ab3cc.jpg

It's still rough, but not nearly as bad as Ninja or Demon.

1686999177_dbtwilight2.jpg.f28cf484968863048ce63b831a76fca5.jpg

The Crypt exit and Beast queue allow for some excellent views of Diamondback.

1433104240_dbtwilight.jpg.0f7eda84c12bd551730d4aff75495e27.jpg

Unrelated, the blueberry ice cream they sell near Diamondback is awesome! And I'm not generally known for having a sweet tooth.

613944817_twilightbeast.thumb.jpg.c4817293351e5d835e9bb4238fe35d19.jpg

Earlier in the week I was underwhelmed by the Beast. This twilight ride changed my mind completely. Now I see what all the fuss is about.

knothole.jpg.035cf29aead8676f21fda6738ee02b2f.jpg

Obligatory knothole shot. We ended the night, and our trip, with as many Diamondback rides as we could.

fireworks.jpg.44a4cd66ac63457a78efc29e8be693d2.jpg

And bonus fireworks!

exit.jpg.9b7f674f6f88d7c1702b0d58cc9e7dff.jpg

And that was it, our trip has come to a close. We had a great time.

gus.thumb.jpg.7e94582914d726d7c6ea398a2d8b8d50.jpg

This fluffy forest cat was very excited to have us back home. Thanks for reading! Next up, more coverage of our home parks SFGam & Indiana Beach!
