Alton Towers Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

That poster was just a joke at enthusiast's expense. Evidenced by the Black's Marauders(B&M), the blatent naming of Switzerland for Intamin, name dropping Merrie England. I doubt Alton Towers were even thinking of The Smiler in 2011, let alone a coaster here!

So what do we make of this? As well as the postponed 'World of David Walliams' featuring 'Gangsta Granny: The Ride' opening this season, Alton Towers have rented three classic fairground rides they ar

I mean, at least Merlin is finally using their bizarre ass marketing for something that kind of works?!!? I get that it's a bunch of temporary carnival rides but at this point I'll take it!

I think they're trying to make the best out of a bad situation - partly of their own doing as they seem to have got rid of all their support rides. The choice of rides seems pretty crappy so well done

I'd be quite happy with something like a Mack Water Coaster and think this would be both a fitting replacement to the Flume, and also be a nice fit for the park. It's a nice area they have to work with - looking forward to seeing the construction pictures from the Sky Ride

Actually they were, SW7 was supposed to be a B&M coaster but apparantly B&M weren't ready with their new concept so Alton went with The Smiler instead.

The Long Term Development Plan (2010-2019) earmarked The Flume for removal, so yes they would have been thinking about it's replacement at the time that poster was put up.

It has happened a few times that Alton Towers have switched their plans around for one reason or another. I believe AIR was supposed to be for 1998, but B&M weren't ready with the flyer concept so Oblivion was built instead.

So yes the poster was obviously aimed at enthusiasts, mentioning a Secret Weapon from Switzerland (home of B&M and Intamin), but was also quite likely to have been a clue about one of their plans for the area.

Although I would like to see a Mack Water Coaster at Alton Towers I don't think that would be very "Ground Breaking".

I think this is more likely to be a launched woodie with inversions (meaning Alton Towers could market it as a World First). Or maybe B&M are finally ready with a 4D version of their Wing coaster.

The sign looks to be in a 'pirate like' theam. I personally think an Intamin Aqua trax would be a really good ride for the park.

I don't think that has anything to do with the theme just the area in wich this ride comes. I remember clearly that the Smiler's secret weapon logo was themed to the X-Sector form the park.

a launched woodie

That was my first thought given the massive area but the height restriction. Not really sure though.

On what sort of timescale are the planning applications submitted to the council if they were going to aim to open it next year? Is it a bit late already for someone not to have spotted them?

I keep telling you guys, these are a myth. I check every-time I go, there's just a trax now....

In all seriousness though, if Lotte World is never going to turn the water back on I would also really like to see another be built.

^^They'd have submitted one months ago if they were going to, it's usually towards the end of the year. I believe plans for The Smiler were submitted in December 2011 so we'd have seen one in December last year or towards the start of this year. However, i think that the area around Katanga Canyon and The Flume site are under the GDO, which means that they don't need planning permission to build as long as it's under certain restrictions.

^Didn't this argument already happen?

Electricity is incredibly expensive in the UK compared to most other countries so LSM launches just aren't financially possible.

LMFAO!!!!

Ok, on second thought, maybe it's BETTER than the fanboys haven't been responding to this thread!

The GDO doesn't cover the raised bit in the woods though, so they'd need permission for anything to go that far. Plus it only allows buildings below 5 metres, which is why they applied for permission for The Smiler.

^Yeah, you're right, so because we haven't yet seen an application it's pointing towards 2018. However it seems very early for them to be teasing the project if it's not for next year.

^Possibly just to appease the public with all the stuff thats been removed this season? If the sign is there they at least know the flume has been removed for a reason, as opposed to the other stuff which is just shut or gone completely.

There was an aritcle on TowersTimes about this time last year of something happening in regards to SW8, and it linked to this. Though it says that the ride was going to belocated in the Forbidden Valley area near Nemesis.

^I didn't realize they were dropping the Sonic theme on Spinball, thought maybe it'd have been around this year with Sonic's 25th anniversary to give it the ride some publicity if/when new games come out.

Kind of sad that Enterprise is now the only flat for the whole park considered a thrill: http://ridetimes.co.uk/?group=Thrill

^ The reason that the sonic theme was dropped is simply because the deal with Sega ran out and they didn't renew it. I hope they repaint it back to the lighter colors it used to have at some point too, i liked those.

This makes me really want a new flat package for next year.

I'd actually like to see new flats before SW8. I'm really not sure what kind of flats they would add, though.

If they didn't have the height limits and S&S still made them, a Sky Swat could've gone really well in Ripsaw's old spot.

They could always relocate Slammer from Thorpe Park

Nemesis is staying plain white.

That is only phase one of the repaint. The helix does have some of the blood paint theming on it. Only one side of the station building has been painted also, should be finished next year.

I remember in RCT1 there was a park with an S&S Space Shot/Double Shot emerging from the ground. Thinking of S&S, maybe they can build one?

That's an older photo though, the supports are now black. It is staying white for now, but part of the first turn after the corkscrew has 'rust' painted on it, and it's likely the whole track will look like that in the near future.
