Photo TR: Holiday World 5/17/10 - 5/18/10

Let me just say before I even start that I LOVE Holiday World and it is by far my favorite park. If this park wasn't 8 hours from home I believe I would spend half the summer there.

I just purchased a brand new Nikon D5000 and was itching to shoot some Voyage shots with the Traditional PTC trains while they are still running. This is my first DSLR camera so I'm kind of learning as I go here.

Over the course of the two days I met some great people, hung out with a great friend and travel companion, spent a couple of hours in the water park with some fellow TPR members, and had a great overall time.

Wildebeest is amazing. I'm not a big water ride person, but this ride is a blast. The airtime is amazing. In some of the spots it feels like your entire raft is off the track for at least a second or more. So much fun. It was a little chilly though and I can't wait to come back when the weather is nicer.

It was exciting to see the Timberliners in person, even if they aren't ready yet. I can't wait to ride these babies. Even with the PTC trains though The Voyage is still my number one coaster.

On a side note my youngest son is 8 and just finally reached that magical 48" mark over the winter so I'm bringing him down here next Monday and Tuesday and am very excited at the prospect of sharing this great park with him.

Note the grey skies. It was cloudy, slightly breezy, and a little chilly over the course of the two days of my stay.

Maybe I'm just a giant kid at heart but Santa always brings a smile to my face.

03.jpg.3b0704c77467c52576240b6ad3b53fd3.jpg

We kicked off the coasters with Raven.

04.jpg.2c8ceb5f53ff47e7c6845944573bf98c.jpg

I'm putting the pressure on this incredible little woody to make a coaster fan out of my son next week.

05.jpg.68ad91dced1878f09d4d91f5e85ac296.jpg

I pray it's up to the challenge.

06.jpg.ef42b3e34eb936a55eb5dd39ab85cabe.jpg

Anxious to try Wildebeest I decided to risk hypothermia to give it a go.

08.jpg.f598070b008de98340f1dc68940abeff.jpg

It is "The Voyage" of water rides. Simply insane. Despite not even liking water rides I left this ride soaked to the bone with an ear to ear grin.

09.jpg.e57f3c36d3843ece5332b2a666a9f306.jpg

Soaking wet and shivering to death I could now hear Voyage calling my name.

10.jpg.228265d4ac72350613c80c4bc182ce45.jpg

With one train ops the average wait was 15 to 20 minutes.

11.jpg.9f1607f762f6749071a96e5b048c1b43.jpg

This is why I bought a new camera, so I could mask my horrible photography by catching the occasional great shot like this.

13.jpg.d1be8cedc3394f1a3d051ca847561777.jpg

The guy in the Griffon shirt was from Germany. He was here in the US with a couple of friends touring parks. I told him I caught this shot and promised him it would end up in my TR. Hopefully he finds it.

15.jpg.a00a3987e3d04b0e1fee720ba025318f.jpg

So those are the dummies that hijacked the Timberliners!

17.jpg.ad9d3bded06cff5b8840561017000e72.jpg

I did notice that after I posted the first picture of the damage that someone went and covered it up with a tarp.

18.jpg.4a882eff6aff9fb3ecda4d7dc32973e8.jpg

Here I believe we find the real culprit. It was bunny rabbits secretly employed by Intamin to sabotage the Timberliners.

19.jpg.66f557fbb0a4a0525af9325345140505.jpg

After several rides on Voyage I made my way over to yet another amazing woody.

20.jpg.3479dc391c5f6ba19140b66db045b058.jpg

Unfortunately this is one of the very few spots of airtime to be found on the ride.

21.jpg.57f5a0d835ba701ea0954d61242669b8.jpg

It really provides some great lateral g's though.

22.jpg.ecd8c7fa5a526ec97ad0ae13c3c7f051.jpg

In fact that is really what this ride is all about.

23.jpg.745a8f438745dad723b1090ccb43119b.jpg

It winds through some of the queues in the water park making for some very photogenic opportunities.

25.jpg.36d6f770d8ec6c0dcfc7f70139a240b9.jpg

On day two my friend and I met up with another of my friends Zach and his friend Andrew. We decided to brave the chilly air and hit up some water park action.

26.jpg.743ba78be5f5b79b0d49c13c4aeedcc6.jpg

After several more rides on Wildebeest we headed over and started knocking out some of their other slides.

Zoombabwe just felt like it went on and on forever.

28.jpg.ff28b58f1954dae71a68f5849ad6c422.jpg

I enjoyed Pilgrims Plunge much more this year than I did last year.

29.jpg.9e5ee3aa134f1f6f41e444eb72a616ff.jpg

After a couple of hours in the water park we all decided it was time to fill our empty bellies with some of the best amusement park food to be found... but Plymouth Cafe was closed.

30.jpg.beda27af8dd92d1592bfd20a70fb6af8.jpg

We made our way over to get us some barbecue in the fourth of July area instead, but it was also closed.

31.jpg.b3621f32e75281a36794c13b7164a7a9.jpg

Zach about wet himself when he found out I had never rode Liberty Launch, so we rode this instead of eating yummy barbecue. Fun, but I was still hungry afterwards.

32.jpg.eab588e72ed9e1ef33cbc2fc1249bd1b.jpg

After finally finding some food at Kringle's Cafe we split ways with Zach and Andrew, and made our way over to Gobbler Getaway.

33.jpg.4b2e2bdcdb3d4c5b3fd67b0b522b9a55.jpg

I'm making it the goal of my life to reach master status, but so far I can only reach apprentice.

34.jpg.8aae29494c19a2e0e53e8cf07d83d500.jpg

Not wanting to get wet again we skipped Frightful Falls, but I snapped a few pics of it anyways.

35.jpg.a85d3bcc84d7518378713c18e853d6b5.jpg

Not quite two trains, but still pretty cool.

36.jpg.cfe78afc9ef18d874ffdf550179cbe61.jpg

If I had a dollar for every time I've just called this ride "Monster" it could of payed for my season pass.

37.jpg.49d58dfe03be24f81808b5690513ee81.jpg

Raging Rapids. Brrr... once again, I'm already back in dry clothes, so maybe another day.

38.jpg.abbbbaac1ec9be773a81c5963344d95e.jpg

I couldn't even stomach this ride today, but maybe it was actually just the closed sign on Plymouth Cafe making me sick.

39.jpg.9d3a9322e10c790ef1cafe132ed56ad4.jpg

I'm not really sure what makes swing rides like this so fun, but I love them.

40.jpg.a5bb1b5df594035624e05bd3a9e1dbf2.jpg

This must be one intense swing ride. You have several terrified girls and one guy about to hurl. They do realize that they are just swings don't they?

41.jpg.4ab889da73c5e0d57f58ea51b83adf7e.jpg

Growing up the Scrambler was always my favorite.

Holiday Worlds answer to Cedar Fairs Dale Earnhardt themed rides.

43.jpg.5e5567c168dcf7547235eca808eda6d4.jpg

I have a sickening feeling that I am riding this two dozen times next week when I bring Joey back here as this is his favorite ride.

44.jpg.831cb1eb0f142e8dc20c9b21ac1a6054.jpg

Last flat ride of the day we did was the flying scooters.

45.jpg.fa18a07c15c39b6621fdad96b04f97d3.jpg

Back to back rides here and we made our way over to Voyage for a handful more rides before making the long trek home.

What a great PTR! Some of the best photos I've ever seen taken at Holiday World. Too bad it was cloudy, if it was sunny than the photos would of been even better. I might be going to HW again this weekend, so if I do, I might have to try to find some of those angles to take some good photos. Is that all of the photos, or is there more? And could you give a more detailed comment on what you thought of Voyage, Legend, and Raven? And maybe a ride count? Thanks.

Nice TR and Photos. Holiday World is one of my favorite parks.

I bought a Nikon D60 last year but have not dragged it into a park as I am still learning how to get the most out of the camera and lenses.

Keep up the great shots!

That's not even close to all the photo's. I tend to spend as much time taking photo's as I do actually riding anything. Plus since this camera is blazing fast compared to what I'm used to it is far to easy to just sit there snapping pictures of EVERYTHING. I'm gonna run out of storage space for shoots like that.

I think I rode Raven maybe a dozen times, Legend about 8 or so, 6 rides on Wildebeest, and probably put in close to 25 rides on Voyage over the two days. The only other ride I rode more than once was the flying scooters.

I was at HW monday too and I think I saw you around, the TPR shirt gave you away! I believe we were both marathoning the Voyage at the end of the day?

Yes, anytime I am at Holiday World I am usually putting in laps on Voyage for the last hour or so.

I actually had several people comment on the TPR shirt. I even met another member named Steve(?) while in line for the Legend. Steve if that's not your name, I'm sorry. I am one of those extremely sociable people so I always love meeting new people, but have an extremely bad memory so I may not always remember your name later.

^ They have a full blown waterpark called Splashin' Safari which is entirely in its own section of the park (and is accessible from two different entry points from within the theme park). The new Wildebeest ride is located in Splashin Safari. However, their "traditional" water rides like the log ride and rapids ride are scattered throughout the park; just like at every other park.

Great photographs! I can't believe I have never been to Holiday World, even though I live 1 hour away from there my friends think its a park for kids only, they think there are no great rides there... ... Its kinda harsh hearing that. But once I'm 18 or 19, I'm going to do a solo road trip and go to this park.

By the way, I can tell that it is cold, for example: looking back at the Pilgrim's plunge photo, there's nobody sitting in the front seat, it shows that the people that are riding are brave!

Edit: Never mind, people sitting in the front of the boat are wearing black; they are hard to see!

^^^Holiday world has themed areas to different holidays. For example, the Raven and the Legend are in Halloween Land, The Voyage and Pilgrims Plunge are in Thanksgiving Land - There are also rides in 4th of July Land and Christmas Town. It is an AMAZING park. It would even be amazing if there weren't free sodas and sunscreen!

^^^^ You really need to go to Holiday World, especially since your so close to it. I live in Indianapolis so it's a three hour drive, but if I had the money, I would buy a season pass and go all the time. Just one ride on Voyage alone is worth the entire drive there, not to mention Legend and Raven are also great coasters that are in my top 10, plus they have the second best water park in America.

Oh, and about the people not riding in the front row of Pilgrim's Plunge. I'm pretty sure I see people riding in the front row, they are black so they blend in with the seat.

Nice TR from one of my favorite parks.

I only ride in the front row when I want to get soaked from head to toe! Last Friday there weren't enough people to fill a boat (everyone was at Wildebeest), so they told you where to sit in order to "balance" the boat. One boat also had the front seats taped off and I gathered it was because the lap bars wouldn't open.

Maybe I'll post a TR if I get time. I'm looking forward to getting some photos of a RED voyage train - see the videos on this page for the park's "Plan B" to get back to two-train operation until the Timberliners are ready: http://www.holidayworld.com/node/3301

I'm really hoping my youngest son likes the roller coasters because then I can manage to score us a ride on a red Voyage train, but if not at least I will be able to snap a few pics of it while I am there.

Great trip report! You've got me researching camping options in the area already, hoping to get my brother to join in me in breaking away from our wives for a weekend and making the 6 hr drive to visit HW. (We're both Mt. Dew addicts, so the free drinks are definitely a plus!)

Wildebeest looks like a lot of fun. Camera took good pictures. Someday I need to get a DSLR camera. I am torn between saving for a new HD video camera or a DSLR.

I recently bought a Canon SX20 IS. Shoots great pics, feels like a small SLR, and the HD video w/ stereo sound is great! Definitely recommend it to anybody who's looking, and will definitely be taking it with me to HW if I go this summer. (I also recommend anybody taking cameras on the road with them insure them. I have all of my photo and music gear insured and only pay $7.00 a month to insure gear worth a couple grand. That's how I bought my new camera, from money I got from the last one I broke!)

Hey Great Photo's and review!!! I'm glad to see the park looking so vibrant and alive in your photo's unlike mine in my photo TR... lol. It must have been the camera, lol. Anyways...

So I got off work around noon today and thought I'd just drive up to park for the afternoon and low and behold around 3:15 CDT when I was getting off my 3rd Voyage ride I see this!

IMG00271.jpg.c0e1ce1076067d6e4706a04da6866722.jpg

It's a brand new used red roller coaster car! All of this could be yours if the price is right!

and this!!! Well it's there somewhere... Those bobcat's were moving pretty fast.

IMG00272web.jpg.5e662f720b6debe6e2da779a0ded9618.jpg

Where's Waldo's red Voyage train?

And then as I was leaving the park about 30mins later I could see them already raising a crane to place the cars on the track. So looks like they'll have this going by the weekend!

What a great Photo TR! Some of the best photos I've ever seen taken at Holiday World.

I agree! These pictures are great, especially the close-ups of riders' faces (and of those, I love the facial expressions you captured on the swings). This TR has whetted my appetite for visiting Holiday World in a few weeks.

As for HW's Plan B with the Voyage trains--that is really awesome and thoughtful of them to modify a Raven train for what will hopefully only be a few weeks' use. Once again, this park has shown they are willing to go the extra mile. What a thoughtful, dedicated staff!
