NEWS: Mom charged with beating son at amusement park

Recommended Posts

SALEM — A Newmarket woman was arrested on Mother's Day on charges of beating her 9-year-old son at Canobie Lake Park, police said.

She also allegedly kicked and elbowed two police officers when they tried to arrest her.

Other park patrons witnessed Shannon Benedict, 27, put her son in a headlock, punch him in the back of the head, and then pull his head back by his hair and slap him in the face about 4 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Park security called police and escorted Benedict to the main gate. She began yelling profanities and threatening the security guard as she left the park, police said. She allegedly shoved the security guard and told him she had "been to jail before and would (expletive) kill him," according to police Capt. Shawn Patten.

When police arrived, Benedict swung and flailed wildly when officers tried to take her into custody, Patten said. She elbowed one officer in the stomach and kicked another officer. Benedict eventually was arrested without the use of a Taser or pepper spray, Patten said.

She appeared to be extremely intoxicated, police said.

The 9-year-old boy was taken from the park by other adults in the group he came with. The state's Division of Children, Youth and Families has been contacted, Patten said. Salem police credited the security officers at Canobie Lake Park for containing the situation until police could respond.

"The security at Canobie is very well trained and does an excellent job," Patten said. "They are an asset to keeping the park a safe place to bring a family."

Benedict faces single counts of disorderly conduct, criminal threatening and resisting arrest, and four counts of simple assault. She was booked and released on Sunday, with a scheduled court arraignment on June 24.

Also, just for laughs, here is her mugshot:

That reminds me of a situation at the Brookfield Zoo in the Chicago suburbs I saw about a month ago.

Picture this....a big statue of a kangaroo where kids can crawl in the pouch on the front. This statue is surrounded by a bunch of kids playing and their parents standing nearby. Out of nowhere, a frustrated mother comes storming towards the statue and at the top of her lungs yells "I AM GOING TO BEAT YOUR ASS!!!!". Now, I never did see her actually beat her kid, but yelling that at the top of her lungs in a public place surrounded by children? Classy.

Never would have guessed that. I also like the fact she treats being in jail as a badge of honor and somehow ties that into wanting to kill someone.

What a way to spend mother's day, beating your son & hitting cops at an amusement park...while drunk.

It's awesome that people like this are breeding.

Good point... Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Dangers says it best.

Been around the world and found

That only stupid people are breeding

The cretins cloning and feeding

And I don't even own a TV.

Are you kidding me? So there were other people in the group that didn't try to stop her from doing this to her son or calming her down themselves? Some "other adults" they are!

I wonder if the kid has a name from a character in a certain vampire movie?!?!

Maybe, but in that case, wouldn't the article be about the kid beating up his mom?

As others have said before on the site, prospective parents really need to take an IQ test. Seriously, if the boy did anything wrong(don't know he did), why couldn't she just give him "the look"?

Several years ago, we saw a woman pull a spatula out of a stroller and start whacking her kid with it in Magic Kingdom, right by the teacups.

I hadn't thought of that in years, and then Todd just mentioned it, an hour ago, before I read this.

Weird.

To a lot of people, it's normal behavior to do that to a kid. I grew-up where it was accepted to slap the hell out of your kid for doing anything not perfect and other adults do nothing. It's seen as "you raise your kid this way, I'll do it my way" deal. It's not right, but it happens.

Well, you never know the circumstances... Maybe the mom was a really hardcore enthusiast. After getting off Canobie Corkscrew, the kid could have said something totally GP-ish, like, "Hey mommy, that ride was fun. Let's ride the loop-dee-loop coaster again." to which she may have responded, "Damn it little Billy! If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times, Canobie Corkscrew has a double corkscrew, not a 'loop-dee-loop'. I'll bet you don't even know that it's an Arrow coaster that was previously at 2 other parks before being installed here! Now get over here and take what you've got coming!" -Slap!- "Don't you..." -Headlock!- "EVER!..." -Head punch!- "publicly embarass me..." -Hair pull!- "with your pathetic lack of coaster knowledge again! You were raised better than that!"

If you ask me, it's entirely possible that her poor GP-ish kid may have brought this all upon himself and has now learned his lesson and will never spout such embarassing, uninformed foolishness again.

(Of course I'm kidding)

Sad story, really.

I totally agree with the "forced sterilization" comment some posts back.

I hope this isn't the kid who 10 years from now kills his parents for the way he was treated.....but then again...he just might be.
