NEWS: Terra Mitica lives in limbo

Recommended Posts

Terra Mitica fun put your machine at full capacity with Easter, but that does not prevent the shadows still appear in the form of uncertainty about the future ownership of the park and the personal adjustments that have raised tensions between the template and direction. CEO himself, Juan José de Torres, acknowledged yesterday in a meeting with members of the works council at this time the company is in limbo until shareholders decide whether the main continue with the project or if they rent and sell facilities.

The chief executive of the Benidorm theme park argued before the representatives of the workers that the uncertainty will develop initiatives to prevent medium and long term and commit to negotiate issues such as the new labor agreement or restructuring and changes to improve performance. So what committee sources said.

Because, for now, the big three owner-partners Consell, CAM and Bancaja-silent on the original plans pointed to an imminent departure of shareholders. A delay that has surprised the top three candidates who submitted bids for the facility, Parks Meeting, Aqualandia-Mundomar and Aspro, who aspired to have assumed the management of the 2010 season, finally something has not happened. The vice president of the Generalitat, Gerardo Camps, has merely said that the operation will be formalized before the summer.

Meanwhile, the current director of Terra Mitica has no choice to effectively manage the park to attract more visitors, waiting to see if it eventually produces the change of ownership and under what conditions. Torres came to submit a feasibility plan for the next three years, which is committed to achieving benefits without large investments.

Specifically, for this Holy Week, as the company reported yesterday, extending the opening hours at the most important days. The facilities will be open from today until April 12 with all the entertainment at full capacity. In fact, from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, the schedule runs from 11.00 to 22.00, while the remaining operating days will be closed at 20.00.

And although the park began the season on March 6, will operate during these days when its entire range of rides, water, children, horror, dozens of shows, shopping and restaurants. This, together with the different promotions, gifts up to a second day free, will help increase attendance.

It will be during these days when incorporated almost all fixed-intermittent employees of long duration (1200-1600 hours per year). A circumstance that has been criticized by unions, who do not understand the one-month delay in the recruitment of these, as well as the lack of a concrete commitment BOUT what will happen in the summer months with the workers of reinforcement ( 300-600 hours), they fear to be called in large numbers.

It's hoped the new managers can turn around the fortunes of the Benidorm park

The Generalitat has announced the rental of Terra Mítica to Aqualandia, with the option to buy. The regional councillor for Tourism, Belén Juste, made the announcement on Tuesday night ending what has been a long period of rumours about the future of the Benidorm attractions park.

The decision on the future came the same night that a fiesta was held in Terra Mítica to celebrate its ten year anniversary, and the initial rental period will be for the next ten years.

The contract includes a clause obliging the new managers to take over the current workforce and managers, according to a press release. Aqualandia will pay 1.8 million € a year, which is the same amount that Terra Mítica is currently paying in interest on its loans. There is an additional rental linked to visitor numbers and the income at the park. The option to buy is set at 75 million, which is the global debt of the company.

Terra Mítica was conceived in the middle of the 90’s by the then President of the Generalitat, Eduardo Zaplana. After an investment of 240 million € and the implication of different banks and companies, it had a forecast visitor draw of four million a year. However in 2005 the park entered bankruptcy protection with debts of 218 million € and losses of a further 120 million. It has never attracted more than 1.5million visitors a year.

Part of the land of the park was sold for housing to Enrique Ortiz for 85 million, and the park also signed a contract with Paramount which cost it 3.5 million a year between 2001 and 2004.

The new contract with Aqualandia is expected to be signed in the next few days.

http://www.euroweeklynews.com/news/costa-blanca/costa-blanca-north/90549-terra-mitica-sold-to-aqualandia

The Valencia Regional Government company SPTCV has sold its 22.31 per cent stake in Terra Mitica theme park to Aqualandia for €65 million, official sources said.

Of this amount 15 has been invested in the park, located in Benidorm. Aqualandia started leasing the park in Summer 2010, with an option to buy, which it has now taken.

But Terra Mitica sees out this year, still unsure as to what lies ahead. The crisis has deepened across the country, and theme park visits are one of the first cutbacks people make.

This year, as reported by EWN, 120 workers were made redundant at the park this year, and now 120 have filed actions against the owners for unfair dismissal.

The ex director general of the park, Juan Jose Torres, has claimed 400,000 euros for his own dismissal.

The magic breakeven figure of three million visitors per year seems a long forgotten dream.

Last year the figure was a mere 520,000 ; 20% less than in the previous year. This year’s figures have yet to be finalised and published.

I do hope things get better for this park.

THE owners of Terra Mitica Theme Park have promised that the site will not close, despite 215 of the 386 workforce being laid off.

Such an assurance was given last Friday in the wake of protests outside its gates by ex employees and Union members. They also assured that they will not reduce the numbers of attractions open.

The matter of safety was not raised by either side when the announcement was made, though some think that security, maintenance and monitoring of crowds and those on the attractions may well be impaired with drastically reduced staff cover, if all the facilities remain open.

The demonstrations were part planned and part spontaneous as a number of employees did not know they were going to lose their jobs until the Friday when they were notified.

Many do not know their legal position as the employers dismissed staff under ERE (Expediente de regulación de empleo , which some fear might limit their rights.

The variation in Spanish labour law was designed to give flexibility in the workplace but now leaves many Terra Mitica staff uncertain as to their future.

At least 20 staff accepted their dismissal on the day, but many others are seeking legal advice on the matter, with the support of their unions.
