Six Flags Great Adventure (SFGAdv) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

American Thunder at SFStL is still doing very well, and is regarded by some as the best coaster in our park. It was built in 2008. I think it just depends on the park.

Yes definitely, these rides age better at smaller parks where they can receive the attention they need.

And in reference to those commercials, it was crazy that they were proud of Viper at one point.

I don't think its a question of pride LOL. They made a big investment and had to market it.

I mean that was its opening year, they had to be at least a tiny bit proud.

"Showing my age........."

Those 90's commercials aren't so bad! Especially as I think Batman is still a GREAT coaster- so hard to believe it is that old! 2005 is cool- too bad they chose not to maintain that area of the park....as when it opened, it was terrific!

Thanks for posting these old commercials!

The Golden Kingdom when it opened was as the kid would say, "On Fleek."

The only SF commercial I can remember vividly is the commercial for Mr. Freeze at SFStL (my home park) back in 1997 (although it did not successfully open until 1998). Honestly, I never see commercials for SF anymore, but we are living in the age of social media.

Out of all of those I only vividly remember the Ultra Twister commercial. Made the 9 year old me want to ride that thing so bad. Out of the rest of the clips I posted I think my fave is Rolling Thunder - not because I'm a RT geek or anything I only rode it a handful of times in the 80s/90s, but it just looks so good in that commercial. Parachutes commercial is pretty good too.

My point was that the commercial made it look good, regardless of what coaster it actually is. Thanks for pointing that out though. It's also Shockwave in the GASM commercial.

^ Oh, I understood what you meant, and I agree, the ride looks great in that commercial. Apologies if that post came off as me correcting you. Just wanted to mention an interesting bit of trivia.

Back in the year of 1993, Batman: the Ride was the main reason why I took a weekend off and traveled to Six Flags Great Adventure. That coaster was one of five that the park had running that year ( Rolling Thunder, Mine Train, Skull Mountain, and the Great American Scream Machine - I cannot remember if Blackbeard's Coaster was there or not). That was my first visit, but it wouldn't be my last; I visited that park five more time since then with the last one a few years ago. My impression since that first visit is that this park had a lot of great rides, some I couldn't find anyplace else at that time.

Now today, this park still wants to make that same impression I had when I first visited the park. It has added a ton of new coasters ( Kingsta Ka, the other parks can try to beat it or eat it!) and some of the flat rides that use to run there now resides in other Six Flags parks ( in which I wish Six Flags America could get something decent from Six Flags Great Adventure). But still, this park can be compared to being the Magic Mountain on the East Coast.

^ Thanks for that tidbit; all I can remember from my first trip is riding Batman twice, standing in a long line to ride Rolling Thunder and Mine Train, riding the two flume rides, seeing a Batman Stunt Show, and getting soaking wet from riding a raft tube ride named after a Chinese river. Oh, and I do remember a giant chair attraction in which you sit in with oversize props and get your picture taken ( it made you look like a little kid).

Batman is still complete greatness. I think it proved that during Holiday in the Park. I'm sure that thing blew people's minds back in 1993. Even now whenever we hit the brake run we look at each other trying to figure out wtf just happened.

You bet! Early 90's were my "post-college" days.....and my passion to going to SFGA was gone at that point of my life. That said- Batman blew me away, and (I think) that this "new level" of coaster got my enthusiasm back in gear, as did GASM when we got that.

I was blown away on Batman when I went on it backwards this past year, and like you- was blown away during Holiday in the Park....how the hell this was build in '93 and is still a relevant coaster, blows my mind away!
