Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

I have yet to go through Dinosaurs Alive. Is it worth the upcharge?

For what you get it is well worth the $5 up charge. I did it a few weeks ago and it was really interesting to me as a 39 year old . I was never into Dinosaurs when I was little and for the money where can you go and see them move for less money . There are a few other Dino's out in the park and yes the one on the right just inside the gate scared the crap out of me one day.

Apparently the park sent out an email saying that Kings Dominion will open on March 22nd! Oh, did I say March? I meant May. Alpengeist, InvadR and Verbolten are open tomorrow. This comp

Too bad Volcano isn't still around. It was ahead of its time not only technologically, but it already had limited capacity down to a science.

Yesterday, after my brief stop at SFA, I fought through the perpetual Northern Virginia I-95 traffic to check out Kings Dominion's Taste of the Season event - a COVID-blamed Winterfest-lite.  And beli

Havn't gone through it yet but I must say that I really like the way they revitalized that whole area of the park....now if they can just squeeze in a new ride or two back there to spread the crowds more evenly through the park so that congo isn't so busy I'd be really pleased.

What about a dinosaur-themed B&M invert?

^Interestingly enough, I find the seats on Volcano more forgiving than the typical B&M seat in depth and accessibility. I think it's due to the hydraulic restraint instead of the ratcheting ones that B&M uses.

Halloween Haunt 2012 (XII) News:

While we’re talking about blood... we’ve got some new Halloween Haunt rumors according to a source that wants to be credited as “Bovee”, I’m told that all of the Haunts from 2011 will return to Kings Dominion for the 2012 season, in addition to the addition of a few new ones to make the event bigger than ever. While I wasn’t told just how many new mazes may be added, I was told that we will see one added to the old unused side of the Action Theater.

http://screamscape.com/html/kings_dominion.htm

And apparently at the Coaster Crew Virginia is for Coaster Lovers event held at the park on June 2nd, they stated that 2 new mazes would be added to Halloween Haunt this year along with what was at the park last year.

If this is all true, the park will be at 12 mazes for Halloween Haunt XII. Oh and obviously The Asylum will be completely different this year since the Dinosaurs Alive Dinostore is in the former Grizzly Arcade... I could see that possibly being the maze being put into the Action Theater considering it would be kind of similar to Urgent Scare at KI (which is located in their Action Theater).

Let the Haunt speculation begin!

This might be the first real report I've seen from a Dinosaurs Alive attraction at any of the Cedar Fair parks so far and for what it is it's fairly impressive. If I had kids I'd definitely spend the $5 extra to check it out. It's nice to see Cedar Fair investing in some well done family themed attractions, it really does adds a lot to the overall experience at the park.

And as always, great report Chuck!

^I thought Kings Dominion did well with Dinosaurs Alive. The wooded setting is a definite plus, and kids and families should really enjoy it.

Haven't been through DA yet, though I do plan on doing it soon - it looks much bigger than I expected from Grizzly's lift! And I love what they've done for Grizzly's entrance, it finally has a plaza of sorts. And having to walk through the gift shop to get there seems to mean even less lines than before!

Well we went about 10 days ago and chose to pay the $5 to go through it and I can tell you I thought it was quite well done. The area was constructed very well the dinos looked great and my kids really enjoyed it.

It sucked paying $20 for the 4 of us but I did think it was worth it to do ONCE. However I would NOT pay to do it again.

I'm amazed at how well they made DA fit into that area of the park(havn't seen it yet but might sometime) & love the new entry plaza for Grizzly. Now if they can somehow reconfigure rebel yell's queue so you don't have such a long hike just to get into the station.

^I don't think Rebel Yell's exit has to do with getting people to play the games. The station was very different when this ride was first built, and the paths in and out have have been sort of "Frankensteined" over the years.

^^Hopefully after ECB, that first weekend of August! ERT on Volcano was great - the ride flies without any weight holding it back when it heads up through the volcano!

Ah. I just assumed that, given the choice whether to let guests exit at the bottom of the ramp (there's even a gate there) or keep them forced over to the games area, a business looking to make money will just keep things the way they are. It wouldn't be hard to just open that gate, but years later and they still haven't...

This all does look more impressive than I'd expected; pretty cool, actually. I'd pay $5 to see this, at least once. Especially as I'm not likely to live long enough to see a real "Jurassic Park," which I desperately want to.

Back in the day the area near the exit to rebel yell housed the southend sky ride station as well as the backstage area for games prizes...I'd like to see a simple entry ramp going straight into the station much like the set up on carowind's thunder road.

Wow, DA looks a lot more impressive than I thought it would!

I'm gonna have to invest the $5.00 to check it out on my next trip.

Anyone know what the average crowds are like on a thursday as compared to the saturday crowds? I might be going on a group outting to the park on june 21st & hope that crowds will be light compared to the usual saturday experience, especially since we'll only be staying till 6 pm.

Light was there Thursday after Memorial day and almost all walk on except Volcano.

^ Well schools were still in then, now the crowds should be heavier, but no where near as bad as a Saturday.

Looking at the forecast for that day it might be near 100 degrees out so that may keep the crowds in the waterpark, our group will not be entering the waterpark however & if it gets too hot the trip might end up being postponed.

I have a quick question. I'm not sure if I'll be heading out to any other parks this year, but it's still a 50/50 chance. I don't want to buy a Platinum Pass just in case I don't visit any other Cedar Fair parks.

I'm buying a Gold Pass, and I was wondering if I could be able to upgrade to a platinum pass later in the year? Thanks in advance for the help...
