Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I guess with all these extremely positive reviews of Intimidator 305 I should try to get out there again and give it another go. I rode several times last year at ECB and while I thought it was a really good ride, I felt it was a bit overrated. It was my third favorite coaster in the park (after Volcano and Dominator), but I don't think I'd go back just to ride it. Next time I'm in Virginia, I'll probably stop by to ride again (as well as visiting BGW for their new coaster), but I honestly doubt I'll like it more than I did before. Maybe I'll like it better without the trims, but I think it may just not be my type of ride.

Oh, and from pictures I like the new Shockwave colors better than the old ones. I doubt it improves the ride experience at all, but it does look nicer.

Just kinda curious if anyone has ever run into a similar issue before???

Last year, I bought my first Platinum Pass at Cedar Point for 2011. I am going to be in Virginia and would like to go to KD on May 1st. The problem is that CP season pass processing doesn't start until April 27th, so I am not going to be able to get out to CP to process my pass prior to my trip to Virginia.

Do I have to process my Platinum Pass at CP, or could I do it at KD? The CP website mentions processing the platinum or season pass at that park, but does not mention if I could process it at any of the other parks which open earlier.

Being that the PP covers all parks, I would think I could process it at any CF park, or at least show them the receipt I have for the PP and get access into the park. I would hate to have to pay full price for admission into KD when I already have purchased the platinum pass.

I figured I would ask the specialists here before I call CF.

Thanks,

Phil

^In previous discussions of this, they've always made an issue and said you HAD to get it processed at the park you purchased it at first. In reality, it seems if you are polite, calm, and call ahead of time you can get it worked out where they will give you a comp ticket, or some other way of getting you in.

^^To add on to what Elissa said, if you've paid your $165 for the pass, you are a passholder. Don't let them tell you otherwise. My guess is the best they will do is give you a comp ticket. You'll still have to get your pass processed at CP when you get back, KD won't give you a "hard copy" of your pass, but there's no way they can deny you entry to the park if you are a Platinum Pass holder. You've paid the money, so they have to let you in. I had a similar issue last year on KD's opening day, and after some confusion at the Guest Relations window, they just printed me a comp ticket.

Thank you Elissa & Steve for the quick responses!

I will call them in advance and explain the situation and then go to Guest Relations when I get to the park with the receipt of the PP in hand.

I believe that my partner has also decided to get a senior platinum pass, so maybe they will feel better about giving me a voucher knowing we will also be purchasing another PP!

You can renew your Cedar Point pass online. That's what I did and was able to attend KD last weekend Just go to CP's website and click on season passes, you should see Renew pass when you scroll down.

You can ignore my post. I misread Philrad71's post thinking he bought a 2010 pass last year.

I had a worse PP situation earlier this year. I renewed my PP pass (Carowinds) in Oct 2010 online. I got to Knotts Berry Farm (Jan 2011) and tried to get in (even parking) and that computer said my pass was expired. I paid for parking, and kept my receipt then went to guest relations. I told them I renewed on the internet back in October. The lady checked her computer and it too said my pass was expired. She was going to try to call Carowinds, but they're closed in January with snow on the ground. I said I was coming back to Knotts in a few weeks again, and didn't want to have this problem repeat itself. She called a supervisor who had a better computer, and she verified I did pay. The permanent resolution was; I surrendered my Carowinds PP and received a Knotts PP in return. Everything has been fine since then.

The moral is keep some record of payment (even if online) as proof until your home park is open if they need to check your status.

Thanks,

Just got settled in the hotel... Intimidator 305 better than ever before! I rode the ride 5 times today, twice in the back and three times in row 2. Row 2 is the rides hidden jewel, because its basically the same exact thing as the front with the "stadium" seating (or whatever they call it) but with 1/20 of the wait!

There is more air now than on any other version... and the grey out is still there as well. Actually, I know for a fact that I greyed out more this year than any of the times last year, BUT IT IS SO AWESOME!

Also, the radius of the turn was not increased at all... if you look at the footers while going up the lift hill (if you have the chance since it FLYS up it, haha!), you can tell that they just added concrete to each existing turn footer for the taller supports since they need larger footers.

Other notes:

-One train waits almost all day on 305 and most rides except for Volcano, FOF, and Shockwave (guess the paint job catches peoples eyes)!

-FOF has a full queue again (no more Haunt maze crap).

-There are new flags in the 305 plaza, so no more faded ones!

-Drop Tower is opened this weekend!

-The Grove looks great this year with all the new paint and flowers!

-Rebel Yell was actually RACING.

-Full photo trip report will be posted later.

Can't wait to get back on 305 tomorrow!

Good report. I can't wait until I return to Virginia. I guess I can stop calling it In-Trim-Adator now.

^I know, but believe me, the trims on 232 can have just as big an impact on the ride as the first drop trims did on 305. Sometimes even worse. There were times I rode it last year and never came out of my seat because of how hard the trims grabbed. Somehow those have gotten overlooked, but they're still there and ruining the occasional ride.

Well, to start off I305 was amazing. Loved everything about it and it is much better than the original version. I rode it 5 times, every time basically a walk-on. Volcano had a row back which caused the line to move slowly because the last two rows weren't being used. Shockwave was down part of the day. Plus I love the new colors. Overall a good except for hurler and its trims. My friends kept saying that FLight of Fear just randomly stopped in between the launch and cobra roll which makes no sense at all. How would that be possible and it would have only been down for 10 minutes.

Personally, I like the B&M version better. Those trims bother me too, but for some reason not as much. I guess I was expecting more out of 305. We'll see what happens this year when I visit.

I guess my personal beef is with the new Intamin "signature element" lately. They seem to like the quick direction changes (Maverick, 305, Cheetah Hunt, etc). I like to ride with my hands up and let my body be tossed to really experience the ride. I can't do that with the first 2 rides I mentioned (especially Maverick with the hard restraints), and we'll see with the new Cheetah Hunt. Looking at the construction and final pictures I'm guessing Cheetah will be on my list too. Fahrenheit at Hershey has some mild direction changes that I don't have a problem with. I'm hoping Cheetah will be the same.

I feel like there's this divide between the enthusiasts/GP that love the way Intamin's been headed, and those who reeeally don't. It's really a matter of personal preference!

I, for one, really hope that Intamin keeps heading in the direction they've gone with I305, Maverick, and iSpeed. These aggressive rides (throw in El Toro, too) are the ones that I just can't stop riding. I throw my hands up and don't fight the ride, and I end up just fine at the end.

^Have you ridden it with the new straps? Not having to worry about the hard restraint giving you a concussion is really conducive to letting yourself be thrown around by the ride!

Finally made it to KD today. It was a perfect day weather wise--mostly sunny and in the 70's.

My buddy and I arrived at the park at around 2 and got our passes processed then headed for Dominator. Fun ride and good way to start off the year.

We then headed by Volcano but passed as the line seemed long.

We then rode I305 times--1 in the very front and 2 in the very back.

It's definitely as good, if not better than the first 2 months of last year. Both my friend and I had some gray-outs but we think they were intensified because neither one of us had had much to eat.

We decided to head across the park and got a ride in on Rebel Yell. We sat in the 3rd seat and I'd say it was an ok ride. My friend enjoyed it a bit more.

Next up was Volcano which ran really well.

We finished the day off with 2 more rides on I305.

We were only there about 4 hours but the crowds were light and rode enough I305 to whet our appetites for more rides throughout the year!

Just got back home from my trip... I still am proud to say that 305 is better than ever before! I rode the ride 10 times today, yes 10, mostly in rows 2 and 16. I actually rode it 8 times in a row and then went back right before I left to get 2 more rides. The ride ops were doing an amazing job getting the trains in and out of the station!

Other notes:

-Mostly walk-on/one train waits on rides today except for Volcano and Shockwave.

-Row 3 on Shockwave is down for some reason on one train?

-Shockwave is smooth with the new paint on the drop, loop, and airtime hill... then once you get to the helix and second half of the ride its DEATH!

-I think I counted 5 new tree/flower beds in the Grove!

-Racing Rebel Yell again today... and NORTH side is really smooth!

-KD got 85 bucks out of me on souvenirs.

-Full trip report will be posted sometime this week.

305 still has my number one spot, and its going to be hard to beat now with this new version...

Funny thing about volcano:when I went on opening weekend they only had the very last row blocked so we rode in row #1 of car #4 & good lord was it worse IMO than any SLC.I'd love to see them change those OTSR's to the straps like on 305,same should be done on DT as well.
