The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

P. 131: "Margaritaville at Sea" cruise line announced

Recommended Posts

We generally go my time or any time dining depending on cruise line. so to have 5 more intimate included dining options is great. I'm sure i heard on the you tube link that the menus were different every night. I guess that the more traditional cruises are not going to like this but i also guess RCI has a lot of traditional cruise ships for them and theses ships are going after another almost un taped market along with RCI customers looking for something different.

Looking forward to the TPR Trip report later this year.

Looks like they're going with the Norwegian Cruise Line freestyle approach for the Quantum class, which is a shame.

There's no main dining room or traditional dining. Instead there are four main restaurants (plus a fifth for suite guests). Each restaurant has the same menu each night, so you are encouraged to use a different one each night. You won't get the same wait staff each night unless you eat at the same restaurant (with the same menu). You are required to make advance reservations for each night, either online or once onboard, for all the sit down restaurants.

The four main restaurants are "American Icon Grill" (American comfort food), "Chic" (contemporary cuisine), "The Grande Restaurant" (every night is formal night), and "Silk" (pan-Asian cuisine). There is a fifth restaurants for suite guests called "Coastal Kitchen" (California Mediterranean fusion).

Personally, I'm a bit disapointed. If I wanted freestyle dining I would sail with NCL.

Its somewhere between NCL's freestyle and Disney's rotational dining. NCL's "main restaurants" don't feature a fully fixed menu. It isn't a deal breaker for me, nor does it necessarily make the ship for me either. The pursuit of suite guests with specialty restaurants (Celebrity is doing the same thing) is something I do appreciate though, and that makes a bigger difference for me than anything else announced re: the dining.

The major tourist attractions Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and Fisherman's wharf, are very close to where the ship is docked. The Disney Ships usually docks at Port 35, and it's only about a 4 minute walk to Pier 39. Also, the Exploratorium is a really cool and unique museum that is also within walking distance. You can always take the bus to the Disney Family Museum, but it might be easier and better doing a excursion, if offered.

Major news last night from Royal Caribbean as they play the old switcheroo with a ton of new and old ships. Biggest news was the new ship Quantum will only be in NYC for five months before deploying to China full time!?!?! This really came out of nowhere and has caused the rearranging of a ton of other ships and sailings that had already been announced. Anthem will no longer come to Florida as announced and planned and will instead take Quantum's spot in NYC winter of 2015. Crazy stuff! The Chinese must have promised RCCL a LOT of money for this!

I think the biggest factor was that the Bermuda authorities couldn't put together a plan to dredge the channel for Quantum, so they are putting Liberty of the Seas in New Jersey for the summer because it can fit into Bermuda. Liberty was originally supposed to go to Galveston to replace Navigator in May 2015 (with Navigator being the ship to go to China), but now Navigator will have to stay in Galveston through November.

Once Quantum goes to Asia they will convert the bars into gambling rooms and smoking lounges (Asian passengers don't tend to drink a lot, but they do gamble), so it doesn't make much sense to convert the ship back a few months later once the weather gets too cool for Bermuda. Instead, in November 2015 Anthem will take over as the Quantum-class ship in New York, Navigator will take the spot in Fort Lauderdale originally planned for Anthem, and Liberty will finally replace Navigator in Galveston to fulfill the contractual obligations to the port to have a Freedom-class ship there.

On 4/8/2014 Quantum of the Seas was floated out. See the below photos from the Royal Caribbean Blog.

Royal Caribbean's newest cruise ship, Quantum of the Seas, was floated out today at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

The 167,800-ton, 4, 180-passenger Quantum of the Seas is the first in the Quantum-class of cruise ships for Royal Caribbean and will have her maiden voyage in November 2014 from Bayonne, New Jersey. She is the first of three Quantum-class cruise ships to be built.

Royal Caribbean has already announced the dining, itineraries and Broadway show for Quantum of the Seas with more information promised soon.

Royalcaribbeanblog (an unofficial fan blog) got that story wrong. The ship was floated to move it slightly within the dry dock, but it won't be floated out until August.

Jewel is a GREAT ship, we love it! And don't get too excited, you're basically just getting a few voyages on either side of Alaska season, but I would say go for it if you can! The California Coastal is a very different itinerary and the ship is awesome!

It's better than anything else in L.A, so I'll take it!

Purely speculation, but maybe they are doing this to leave a gap for the third Quantum class, and Quantum of the Seas will lead the way for Oasis 3 in Shanghai for Summer 2016?

Excited for some more firm dates. Spring 2016 and Spring 2018 for these next two. I assume one will go directly to China but keeping fingers crossed that one (even if it's Allure or Oasis) gets moved up to Port Canaveral so I can jump on a cruise even easier!
