gisco
I read a report that the two missing bodies may be in a lifeboat that was pinned under the hull. Can't be much left after 20 months in the water.
AllenA07
I bet Carnival re-uses that fuel. Awesome pictures of the recovery so far- thanks everybody! Actually if the fuel is in usable condition, I would bet that they did use it again. I went to a thing a few years ago where the captain on Mariner of the Seas was talking about ship details, and he mentioned that it costs around a million bucks every two weeks (two cruises) to fuel the thing. Don't see much reason in wasting good fuel. I read a report that the two missing bodies may be in a lifeboat that was pinned under the hull. Can't be much left after 20 months in the water. I worked on a case once where I saw a body that had been in water for about two weeks... I shudder at the thought of what it looks like after 20 months. Crab food! some really stunning photos....and it's incredible to think that where it ended up listing over WAS the reason so many more people didn't die - while it's amazing how those granite peaks underwater smashed up the ship, they provided the perch for the ship to stay at the angle it had been at. I can't imagine how much worse it would have been if they had hit the rock then simply listed over and slid down in the (very) deep ocean. http://photoblog.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/17/20537673-horror-below-the-waterline-photos-reveal-crumpled-cabins-on-uprighted-costa-concordia-cruise-ship?lite Edited September 23, 2013 by robbalvey
SharkTums
New World's Largest Cruise Ship Coming! Yay! From Cruise Critic: http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=5540 Royal Caribbean International kicked off the building of the world's largest cruise ship today with a steel cutting ceremony at the STX France shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO of the line's parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd., Royal Caribbean president and CEO Adam Goldstein and STX France CEO Laurent Castaing attended the event. At 227,000-gross tons, the ship, which will be the third in the line's Oasis-class, will be larger than its sister ships Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, which are 225,282-gross tons. The as-yet-unnamed ship is scheduled for delivery in mid-2016. Royal Caribbean has an option with STX France for a fourth Oasis-class ship to be delivered in mid-2018, but has not exercised the option yet. I love that they're building another Oasis Class ship, they're just awesome! I'll be on this in either 2016 or early 2017 for sure! Curious to see if we can see the difference 2000 tons makes or if it's just a tiny drop in the bucket.

They built both current ships in the Oasis class, and they are, along with Meyer Werft in Germany, the highest quality and most experienced cruise ship builder in the world (screw Fincantieri!). The shipyard in Finland did everything in their power to get the order, even getting the government of the country involved in order to secure financing for the ship at very good conditions, but it was still not enough for RCCL. Oh well, hopefully the ships will be okay from the STX France, just look at Norwegian Epic, thats a nice ship, isn't it? (The outcome of Norwegian Epic mad the cruise line cancel her sister, and eventually order the next ships from the German shipyard).
SharkTums
^Royal Caribbean actually did go to them first as they had an option for a third ship in the Oasis/Allure contract, but the Finnish government didn't get enough deals signed for funding and it fell through. Like you said, at least it's not being built by Fincantieri! Have you heard that Royal Princess is now also having power problems like the Carnival ships that were also recently built there?!!? _koppen
Well, they did get a very good (within ship building market) deal, but the EU rules would not allow any more, since a lot of the money also was a grant. That's why the deal with the French shipyard is a bit suspect, because they are within the same concern (Korean) as the one in Turku, and in just as bad financial state. There is reason to believe that the French government is involved with more financing than allowed by the EU, but since the contract is already signed, theres really no point in investigating it. I just feel as RCCL sacrificed a very sure thing in terms of quality, to save some (all in all very little) money. But as you said, it's good that the ship is not built in Italy! Hopefully RCCL has learned from the mistakes that Cunard and Norwegian did with their flagship being built at this shipyard, and have a much more supervising staff on location to make sure the mistakes from Epic and Queen Mary 2 does not repeat themselves, and to get the ship built the way it's suppose to. Edit: I also wonder if with this new ship, along with the plans for Oasis 4 and 5, we will see some Oasis ship here in Europe over the summer. It would be strange to have all 5 of them, when the time comes, over in the Caribbean.
SharkTums
^Oasis is doing some test runs in Europe next Fall. They're already selling them! More likely though, you'll be getting the second Quantum class ship (Anthem of the Seas) as that ship is built for a cooler climate.

May or may not be. They could be adding something like a fuel tank for extended range. If I did the math right 1700 tons would be a space about 40x40x35 filled with water
SharkTums
^That's more what I was thinking Bob. I think we'll have to wait a long time till more details are announced. arby
Wow, I never realized that cruise ships weighed so much although it makes sense. I thought the military ships I've been on were heavy at 18,000 tons fully loaded. How fast does a cruise ship go with that kind of weight? EDIT: Never mind the stupid question. Amazing how the Internet works; I searched and found out they usually cruise in the ballpark of 22 knots.

kailisun98
Its amazing how far the world has progressed in ship-building technology. I mean they used to think Titanic was big. lankou
In St-Nazaire newspaper, Richard Fain, from RCCL, said that it will be a little bit larger than the others Oasis and there will be new activities on it. The name will be revealed in about one year, for the moment, it called "A34". Living in St Nazaire, I will try to post regularly some pics of the building. gisco
Looks like they might have found the two missing people on the Costa Concordia ROME (AP) — Divers spotted human remains Thursday near Italy's Costa Concordia cruise ship and DNA tests will determine if they are the last two bodies missing among the shipwreck's 32 victims, authorities said. The search for the remains of an Italian female passenger and an Indian waiter resumed after the capsized luxury liner was rotated upright last week in an unprecedented marine salvage operation 20 months after it crashed into a reef off Giglio Island. Civil Protection chief Franco Gabrielli told reporters he had immediately notified the victims' relatives, who had traveled to the island in hopes their loved ones' remains could be found. Coast Guard and Customs Service divers located the remains near the central part of the ship, where survivors had said the two were last seen. Specialized police divers were going into the sea to remove the remains, which will be examined by forensic experts on the mainland in Tuscany. DNA testing could take a few days, authorities said.
