The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

Next month (March ) I will be going on the Carnival Splendor! ( there second largest ship! ) I am very excited about it. It's the largest ship we get over here on the west coast from Carnival. I do think the NCL Epic looks amazing but once again I'm also not a huge fan of the free style cruising.

EDIT[/b}: Please re-size your photos before posting them in this thread. -Joey

^^ Welcome to TPR! Very excited about the Disney Dream as well. I'm booked on the inaugural cruise so I will have a first hand report posted here about a year from now. DCL is my favorite as well (been on 9 of them!) but it is good to try other lines to get some perspective. I agree about the beauty of the DCL ships though, I love the classy Art Deco/Nouveau styling especially in the lobby. My favorite between the two is the Wonder - I like the slightly lighter color palate that is used and I prefer Ariel's and the Cadillac Lounge.

Oh.. and I wouldn't worry too much about the AquaDuck. I'm sure the Imagineers are putting lots of time into making sure the ship looks amazing even with it.

My first cruise ever, was on the Disney Wonder. I loved it especially considering I got upgraded in my room category. I was hoping to book another cruise with DCL only this time on the Wonder when it goes to Alaska. We'll see.

After reading this thread it got me looking into Oasis of the Seas. And now I am like amazed by that ship. It is so gorgeous and the open design down the middle of the ship is so creative. Im REALLY hoping I can save up some money and have a opportunity to sale on this awesome ship. It would be my first cruise so might as well go all out right.

^ Keep your eye on this thread - I'm going to do a pretty in-depth photo tour a bit down the road.

In Oasis related news - her sister ship, the Allure of the Seas will be sailing its maiden voyage a week early - December 5th of this year. Hopefully when the second ship comes on line we will see some decent price drops on Oasis!

Regarding the german ship...

True story, I was on the NCL Gem out of New York, a German Couple got out of their loungers and took their towels. Since it was a sea day the pool deck was packed. My wife and I laid down on the loungers and 10 minutes later they came back. The German man demanded I get out of "his" lounger". My wife being a pushover immediately jumped out of hers. I let him know that the lounge chairs are for everyone and they had gotten up and removed their belongings.

He left.

Came back with five of his friends.

Picked the entire lounger up into the air and flipped me off of it, dumping me onto the ground.

Needless to say, I won't be cruising on the Aida Blu anytime soon.

-oh yeah we were traveling with a group as well so don't worry, it has a happy ending.

^Ahh the 'chair hogs'. Pretty much equivalent to 'line jumpers' in the amusement park industry.

Most cruise lines have instituted rules such as 'if you leave stuff unattended for more than 30 minutes they take it away and the chairs are yours, etc. But it's seldom enforced. I have seen quite a few fights over chairs! It's hilarious. Luckily I'm not one of those 'pool deck' people so it usually doesn't affect me!

'if you leave stuff unattended for more than 30 minutes they take it away and the chairs are yours

As you know, there is an entire group of people that put their towels, flips flops, and those free bags that change color in the sun on the chairs each morning to reserve their spot.

The funny part about my story is they actually removed all their personal items before we made the attempt.

I'm not condoning this action, but this is how my wife convinced me to always get courtyard and penthouse villa suites after that incident. Feel free to try that with Robb! I've got this really cool upsell trick where you can get suites for crazy prices if you ever sail NCL.

That story reminds me of the one of the things that fascinates yet scares me about cruises: how competitive people are over trivia prizes!

Seriously, people argue and almost start fights over a keychain or some other crap. We were accused of "cheating" during one of the music trivia contests, which was so not true. Like we would even care! It's just that I am unbeatable when it comes to identifying horrible '70's & '80's music. But seriously, I want to bring a tranquilizer gun and/or a taser to calm some of these people down...

Carnival Cruise Line is known for their rowdy atmosphere and being the "fun ships" but this is a bit surprising! Apparently a swingers club has chartered out one of their ships for this October. What makes this a little strange is Carnival passed on holding a "Cougar" themed cruise due to the nature of it - and a swingers cruise is any better?!?! It will be interesting to see if Carnival changes its mind once word gets out more.

The article below is courtesy USAtoday.com...

The organizer of one of the most controversial cruises of 2009 -- a sexually-charged voyage dubbed the Swingers Cruise -- is back in the market this year with plans for a sequel.

Swingers-focused start-up YOLO Cruises once again has chartered a Carnival vessel for the three-night romp in the Bahamas, which will kick off in Miami on Oct. 29. As with last year's Swingers Cruise, billed as the first ever on a major ship, YOLO is promising plenty of "playful, sexually themed parties, cruise activities and shore excursions."

Aimed at people who embrace non-monogamous sexual experiences -- or swingers, in contemporary lingo -- the second Swingers Cruise also will boast a "Carnal Cravings Halloween Ball" and what organizers are billing as a "naked and recuperating day" at sea.

The first Swingers Cruise, which took place early last year on a Carnival ship, reportedly was a huge hit. YOLO president Marlene Brustle told USA TODAY at the time that it allowed swingers a chance to get away with like minded people in "an open, erotic atmosphere."

Last year's cruise included designated on-board playrooms with such themes as "naughty schoolgirl" and "masquerade" -- think Tom Cruise's Eyes Wide Shut.

Sex as a selling point for cruises has been on the rise over the past year. What was billed as the first 'cougar cruise' aimed at older women who pursue younger men took place in December (also on a Carnival ship). A second cougar cruise is planned for May on a Royal Caribbean ship.

The sexually-charged voyages have caused some controversy, and just last month Carnival said it would no longer allow cougar cruises on its ships.

Still, Brustle noted last year that swinging is becoming more accepted by the mainstream (for evidence, she said, look no further than CBS' recent primetime show Swingtown), and swinger-focused cruises are here to stay. She said research shows there are about four million swingers in the USA -- a huge untapped market for cruising.

Brustle said the company hoped to offer three or four swingers cruises a year with a variety of itineraries and ships. Prices for the October voyage start at $399 per person for an inside cabin. More information is online at yolocruises.com.

YOLO, by the way, stands for "you only live once."

Eyes Wide Shut's orgy scene was the most unerotic depiction of sex ever put on film--not a great flick for Kubrick to go out on, in my opinion.

There's was some sort of "swinger's party" down the road from Williamsburg in Lightfoot (home of the Williamsburg Pottery and Outlet Mall), of all places, last night. People were talking about it in the office this morning. No one from here actually participated, though. Hell, you could probably catch all sorts of diseases just by walking through the lobby of the motels in that town (they're not known for their cleaniness).

Swinger comes from a Greek word that means, "old, fat, and not attractive".

I read Craigslist for laughs and one time I saw an ad for a supposed motel orgy where they explicitly stated that you must bring your own snacks. Snacks will not be provided! And I just thought that was ungenerous. Or maybe they had experience with fat, ACEr-like people in the past who ate all the Doritos, leaving the orgy organizers really hungry and really craving some Cool Ranch at the end of the event.

I think the difference here though is that the Swingers cruise is being CHARTERED, whereas the Cougar Cruise was just a large group on an 'open to anyone' cruise.

Note to self, do NOT book the sailing after the swingers cruise!!! Or bring buckets of lysol and a body condom!

Is there any cruise where you get to throw the idiots over the side and watch them drown? I'd pay a premium for that.

I heard of a cruise ship out of Davonia that allows such actions.

Ah, Larry, but you forget that to become a resident of Davonia, you must pass an extensive screening process, which includes making sure you're not an idiot. So that activity is out.

However, the Davonia cruise line will offer plenty of fun activities, like Death Metal Karaoke and Gators Vs. Babies: Live on the Promenade Deck...
